NYT Now curated news app coming to iPhone April 2nd for $8 per month
At a cocktail-fueled meet and greet at SXSW, we met with New York Times editors Jill Abramson and Clifford Levy to discuss the news organization’s 2014 lineup of services, including a new enterprise dubbed NYT Now. Created as an iPhone (and iPod touch)-only application, NYT Now is the company’s latest subscription-based product. On the surface, it appears to be simply a “lite” version of the paper’s daily content, but The Times is reassigning nearly a dozen editors to Now full time to curate internal content as well as articles from third-party news orgs, such as Engadget. Now is not without its challenges, though. Full access will run you $8 per month, which, while a far cry from the $45 you’ll fork over for a full digital subscription with Times Premier, is still a significant amount. You’ll be able to download the app on April 2nd, with free access to headlines, summaries and 10 articles each month. The $8 fee (billed every four weeks) will enable full access to any article that appears in the NYT Now app.
Jawbone’s Up24 fitness tracker lands in the UK, Europe and Asia
If you’ve been eagerly waiting for Jawbone to bring its first wireless fitness tracker to your locale, today could be your lucky day. After a period of exclusivity in the US, the accessory maker has expanded sales of its Up24 wristband to 29 new markets (including the UK, China and Japan) letting customers enjoy low-energy Bluetooth support that Fitbit and others have been offering for more than a year. The launch is timely, given that Jawbone recently updated its Android app with wireless syncing and push notifications to get the most out of the rubberized wearable. As with all its products, Jawbone’s making the Up24 available to buy on its local webstore, but the company is also enlisting the help of Apple and Amazon to manage sales. Prices start at £125 in the UK and €149.95 in Europe, but do make sure to check out the full list of confirmed markets after the break.
Available markets include: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Australia.

LastPass for Android can now fill your app logins in for you
You may know LastPass, the cross-platform password manager, as a safe haven for website login details and common form info. Now, as well as playing nice with Chrome for mobile devices, the latest version of LastPass for Android can fill in app login data for you, too. Once it’s updated and you’ve authorized this new feature, loading up an app with a username / password prompt will trigger a pop-up with suggested login credentials you can choose to inject. Chances are, however, you’ll need to tell LastPass which of the logins stored in your vault the mobile app wants — you can also share your selection if you’d like to help it learn common associations. Because apps are often mobile portals for services you’d load up inside a browser on your computer, it makes sense. Then again, we can’t say we sign in and out of apps enough to justify $12 per year for the premium service LastPass’ mobile apps require.

How your Data Reaches the Data Center

Presented By Telx Data Centers
The ever expanding digital world is connected in all aspects. What you connect to from the comfort of your own home can be traced and reported to a hub millions of miles away without you knowing.
Your modem collects the information that is extracted by your router and sent to your ISP. This is then processed to a larger internet system before it reaches the internet backbone. The data centers receive the electronic information transferred from the backbone.
At this stage, the data you search for or carry is secured in the data centre where users are able to access mostly for an optimized marketing strategy.
Drobo’s new storage box is faster, better at Mac backups
Drobo is kicking off its “biggest year” yet with an update to its eponymous flagship. The Drobo Gen 3 gains super-charged internals and Time Machine support that’ll banish your bad memories of trying to use Apple’s backup utility on older versions of the hardware. Rather than it eating a whole drive, users can now create a dedicated partition in the admin panel without any complicated tweaking. Pre-orders begin from today to ship at the end of April, with the base model setting you back $350 and running all the way to $1,450 if you want a 16TB unit. Unless, that is, you already own a first-or-second-gen Drobo, in which case you’ll get a $50 discount if you order before June 9th.

V-Moda wants you to ditch earbuds for these extra-portable XS headphones
I’ve long been a fan of V-Moda’s headphones. They’re well made, customizable with engraved plates and, most importantly, they sound great. If anything has stopped me from wearing the company’s over-ears consistently, though, it’s that they’re a tad too bulky for on-the-go use. That’s where V-Moda’s new XS cans come in — as the name implies, these over-ears are slim and portable. The “CliqFold” hinge lets you collapse the headphones into a small carrying case, but even without folding them they are small enough to fit into a briefcase, smallish bag or even a particularly deep jacket pocket. Speaking of deep pockets, the XS costs $200, which is $100 less than the over-ear M-100s, but still not exactly cheap. In any case, I’ve spent the last few weeks wearing the XS in the office, on long-haul flights and during commutes. Head past the break for a closer look.
The XS are quite comfortable, with foam cushions and a form-fitting headband. Music sounds clear and rich, even if bass is weak compared to sound on the M-100. Val Kolton, V-Moda’s perfectionist CEO, told me he’s hoping to convert those who favor in-ear buds with this latest set. Sure, the XS is still significantly bigger than Apple’s EarPods and the like, but the payoff is superior sound quality thanks to 40mm dual-diaphragm drivers (with an inside and outside ring) and a promised sound variance of no more than 1dB. There’s noise isolation instead of cancellation, as with V-Moda’s other products, but it works well enough that you’ll have to take the cans off to hear the flight attendant. Of course, there’s also the fashion draw; these headphones look sharp in either matte black or (the admittedly very feminine) white silver. V-Moda ships the XS with the customary exoskeleton case, but it’s sized down to match the new headphones’ leaner profile. You can nab the XS for yourself via the source link below.
Update: The product page is currently showing a very inaccurate price point, but that should be fixed within the hour.

HTC One M8 teardown is just as hard to repair as the old one
The team over at iFixit have conducted their routine teardown of the new HTC One M8 and they’ve found that it’s just as hard to repair as the original.
The verdict is that whilst iFixit where happy to see normal screws holding the main body together, the rest of the device was a nightmare to dissect. With a glue-fixed motherboard and a load of tape and copper shielding, the HTC One M8 proved a difficult contender.
During the teardown iFixit did cut through the digitizer cable giving testiment to the overall score they provided the HTC One M8 of just two out of ten for repairability. It’s a slight improvement over the old HTC One score, but still you’ll want to keep your HTC One M8 safe all the same.

ZTE’s giant Nubia X6 has 13MP cameras on the front and back
If you believe that China gets all the good phones, this won’t change your mind. ZTE’s premium Nubia brand has just launched the X6, a handset-cum-tablet with a 6.44-inch, 1080p screen. As with Oppo’s Find 7, ZTE lavished it with top-notch specs, including a Snapdragon 801 chip, 3GB max RAM, up to 128GB storage and a 4,250 mAh battery. The kicker, though, is those matching 13-megapixel cameras — a rare setup for a non-monkey phone. The front shooter matches the back pixel-for-pixel and puts many smartphones’ main cameras to shame with backside illumination, video auto-focus and an f/2.2 lens. The front camera ups the ante with an f/2.0 lens, optical image stabilization and dual flashes. Alas, if you were looking to wrap your (presumably large) mitts around one in the US or Europe, the Nubia X6 will likely stay put in China. It’s now up for pre-order at $HK 5,010, or around $640 for the top model.

Apple to Launch Retina MacBook Air Later This Year, According to Supply Chain Sources
Apple is gearing up to release new MacBook models in 2014 including a MacBook Air with Retina Display, according to a new report from DigiTimes citing supply chain sources. The story notes that while some Taiwan-based supply chain makers are expecting MacBook shipments in 2014 to fall to 10 million units, others are projecting higher numbers with the belief that Apple’s will refresh of its notebook line later this year and release a Retina MacBook Air.

However, other Taiwan-based supply chain makers hold the opinion that 2014 MacBook shipments estimates may not be accurate because Apple will launch new models in the second half of 2014. Apple will reportedly launch a MacBook Air with Retina display, the makers said.
Last week, a forum post from a previously accurate source on Weiphone.com claimed that the MacBook Air would be updated soon, with new MacBook Pros to be released in September. Most notably, the report claimed that both will be accompanied by the release of a new slim 12-inch MacBook, which will come without a fan assembly and feature a redesigned trackpad.
It is also possible that the new MacBook Air mentioned in the report and the slim 12-inch MacBook mentioned in the forum post could be the same laptop, which would fall in line with a report from NPD DisplaySearch last year claiming that Apple is planning to introduce a 12-inch MacBook Air in 2014. That report added that the 12-inch MacBook Air would come with an ultra-high resolution 2304 x 1440 display, and was corroborated by the reliable Ming-Chi Kuo.
The post also comments on Apple launching a larger iPad with a near 12-inch screen, however a report earlier this month claims that the project has since been put on hold due to development hurdles and incompatibilities with the existing iOS ecosystem.![]()
