Samsung reportedly working on a SIM-equipped watchphone

The Gear 2 isn’t even out, but we’re already seeing rumors about something else that’s lurking in Samsung’s R&D labs. The Korea Herald is reporting that the company is working on a SIM-enabled watchphone that’ll make calls without the aid of a smartphone, just like LG’s old Watch Phone and Samsung’s own SPH-WP10. Of course, if a model does exist, it’s likely to be an exclusive for Korean network SK Telecom in the same way that local users get first dibs on Samsung’s Exynos-powered Galaxy phones. Considering the power needs of such hardware, however, it’s likely going to gain a few pounds like the hefty Neptune Pine and chunky XS-3, so maybe we’re better off waiting for version two… or three.

Titanfall delayed again on Xbox 360, now launching April 8th

If you’re an Xbox 360 owner that hoped to get your hands on a copy of Titanfall before the end of the month, we have some bad news: you’re going to need to wait a little longer. EA announced today that for the second time in just over a month, the launch date will be pushed back, this time until April 8th in North America and April 11th in Europe. EA says the delay will help developer Bluepoint Games make things “even better.” The game was originally due to hit stores on March 11th, but was delayed by two weeks to “put the finishing touches” on the current-gen title. What those finishing touches were, we don’t know, but given reports of graphical imperfections on the Xbox One, Bluepoint’s decision to push back the launch to “get the last details right” could be the right one.

Quirky and GE cook up a smarter, prettier air conditioner

Quirky is more than just bendy power strips these days — recently, it’s been pushing its vision of the connected home thanks to a multi-million dollar partnership with GE. So far their deal has yielded stuff like intelligent egg trays (seriously) and clocks, but they’re unveiling something much cooler today: the Aros, a 8,000 BTU smart air conditioner. Yes, really.

In typical Quirky fashion, the $300 Aros is about as pretty an air conditioner as you’ll find — it’s all white, festooned with touch controls instead of analog buttons, and looks like something Dieter Rams might’ve cooked up back in the day. Behind that pretty face is a multi-speed fan that can cool a 350 square foot space, a washable air filter, and a cleverly designed air intake system that keeps the Aros from sucking up air it’s already cooled. Meanwhile, Quirky’s Wink mobile app can turn your Aros on and off based on your location, and it’ll track local energy prices in real time to give you an idea of how much cash you can save too.

The concept seems like sort of a no-brainer in this age of connected everythings, but GE vice president of technology Kevin Nolan admits the conglomerate probably wouldn’t have cooked up the Aros on its own. This is the first truly big-ticket item the unlikely pair has worked on together, but Quirky CEO Ben Kaufman says it’s far from the last.

“We’re going to have a big year,” he told Engadget, adding that the two companies plan to push out new big connected gizmos every 6 to 8 weeks.

SmartRecruiters aims to modernize the hiring process

smartrecruitersThere has been a big effort in the hiring industry to make it easier for possible candidates to apply for jobs. SmartRecruiters is changing that focus from the applicant to the hiring manager. They are leading the way with a new innovative tool that lets hiring managers work on-the-go.

There are many companies and apps out there to assist the job-seeker find and apply for potential positions. What about the hiring manager? What advances have been made to make their life easier or even modernize it? Sifting through applications is a modern version of a ball and chain limiting the ability of the hiring manager to be away from their desk.

To solve this decades old problem, SmartRecruiters just announced the release of their first ever hiring app for Android. That’s right, a hiring app. This app gives executives that are making hiring decisions the ability to take the recruiting process mobile. It enables the decision makers to engage talent real time and make faster, better hires.

According to CareerBuilder, nearly half of candidates use their smartphones when job searching; 59% use their tablets but only 33% of Fortune 500 companies have adapted their career sites for mobile devices. This also means that most of those comapnies have not updated their equipment to let the hiring managers go mobile.

Maksim Ovsyannikov, the Senior Vice-President of Product for SmartRecruiters, stated that when building their Android app, they had several goals that they wanted to accomplish like making it look good and easy to use. Another one of their goals was to make it a natural companion to the desktop experience.

The world is mobile, right?  Well, as it turns out, not the world of recruiting. — Maksim Ovsyannikov

To measure the success of the app as compared to the desktop expereince Maksim explains that user preference of mobile workflow over that of the desktop (where supported) is a great barometer. In addition to keeping track of those trends, another source was user feedback. Maksim also stated that “time and time again once they started using our Android app, they preferred to use it to review new candidates over doing so on their desktops in all cases”. That is a strong statement to make, but in an industry that hasn’t seen a big technological change since internet applications became the new standard, this is a welcomed upgrade for many hiring managers.

SmartRecruiters is a freemium, end-to-end hiring platform. The platform gives hiring managers and recruiters everything they need to post jobs, manage candidates, and select the right individual while removing the complexity from the process. The app can be found on the Google Play Store.

FlashScore Livescore international sports score tracking hits Android

FlashScore.com has long been a destination for those looking to get their international sports scores. With the introduction of a Google Play store app, FlashScore brings what its readers online and on iOS loved to Android.

Boasting coverage of 5,000 independent competitions and lighting-fast score updates, the app is a must for any die-hard sports fan.

It’s nicely designed and quick to navigate, relying on a left-side slide in menu that allows you to choose from 26 different sports. FlashScore Livescore differs from other sports tracking apps by allowing the user to follow individual games, instead of allowing them to follow a team. There are pros and cons to this, such as being unable to batch follow an entire season for one team.

The app relies on the “My Games” tab, which is where you have a centralized way to view all the different competitions you are tracking. Additionally, there is a tab to view all live games and standings. There aren’t many ways to customize it, but there are push notifications for any games you are following.

For a free app that’s powerful and offers accurate scores, this is definitely one worth checking out.

Note that there is no way to login to the FlashScore service from the app.

[Download] Google Play Services 4.3.23 available now, brings in changes to Games, Analytics and Tag Manager

google play services 4.3.23You may have heard on the grapevine that a new Google Play Services was incoming, bringing with it a slew of updates that would improve your Android device’s… services. Well, Google Play Services 4.3.23 is now here, and we can tell you that it does bring in some really nice improvements, not least of all, introducing cross-platform turn-based and real-time multiplayer games between Android and iOS.

In Google Play Services 4.3.23, the Analytics and Tag Manager APIs are being incorporated into Google Play Services, which should help with more timely and consistent updates for the services. The update also adds the Drive and Address APIs which will enable developers the chance to make the Google Drive and shopping experiences better, respectively.

Probably the biggest changes in this iteration of Google Play Services are the changes to Google Play Games which adds game gifts, which gives players the opportunity to ‘gift’ virtual items to people in their Google+ circles or through a player search. As we mentioned before, this update will also provide the tools to let Android and iOS do battle in real-time and turn-based games, something which avid gamers have been wondering about for a long time now.

The rollout of Google Play Services 4.3.23 is said to be a gradual one, but if you can’t wait to get your hands on the update, we’ve got the .apk available below for download:
