No porn for you: Vine changes TOS

If you tend to visit more unconventional sources for your pornographic needs, you might want to sit down for this. Vine has just announced that they are officially banning sexually explicit posts.

They have previously taken action in making sexual content more difficult to find, but the company is finally calling it quits on pornographic posts.

For more than 99 percent of our users, this doesn’t really change anything. For the rest: we don’t have a problem with explicit sexual content on the Internet –– we just prefer not to be the source of it.

They are, however, allowing posts that pertain to ”primarily documentary, educational or artistic in nature”.

If you have any questions regarding what you can and cannot post, here are the new Terms of Service. It explains everything you need to know about content blocking and what exactly they allow on their social network.

Also, as you may remember, Twitter owns Vine. Twitter created Vine. Will Twitter be the next social network to dump pornography? Who knows.

Mercedes wants to bring CarPlay to older vehicles this year

CarPlay in a Mercedes-Benz

The biggest catch of Apple’s CarPlay (aside from platform support) is its limitation to newer vehicles; at last check, most people won’t buy a new car just to get better smartphone integration. Mercifully, Mercedes-Benz tells 9to5 Mac that it’s planning to deliver an “after market solution” for older cars by the end of 2014. The automaker isn’t providing many details, although there’s a good chance that its solution involves more than a simple software upgrade. Other brands haven’t outlined their plans for aftermarket CarPlay support, but it’s early days — don’t be surprised if there are more announcements once manufacturers are ready to show their cards.

If you thought Time Warner Cable was late to the Showtime party, think again. Charter subscribers have been waiting for access since 2011, and now it’s finally here. Starting today, customers can join in with the the rest of the cable crowd and stream live (or past) episodes of their favorite Showtime production on its Showtime Anytime app, which is available on iOS, Android, Roku and the web. As long as you have a Showtime subscription, getting your Homeland fix is as easy as signing into the app with your Charter username and password. Additionally, the same programming from Showtime Anytime will be available from Charter.net and the company’s TV app in the near future.

Get a quality head-to-head trivia fix with QuizUp [App of the Day]

Are you a fan of games like Trivial Pursuit and You Don’t Know Jack? Do your friends get mad because you’re always spouting off movie trivia and random bits of seemingly useless knowledge? We’ve got just the game for you.

After millions of downloads on iOS, Quizup has come to the Android platform. The game spans some 400+ topics and includes hundreds of thousands of questions. We’re talking books, movies, music, video games, sports, science, and so much more. Each topic comes with its own ranking system and method for leveling up.

So who are you playing? Well, that’s up to you, really. The first time you open the game you are asked if you’d like to log in with Google+, Facebook, or create a new account via email. Once in, you can take on random players from around the globe in whatever topics you like.  Want to challenge a particular friend? Have at it! Pick the topic and roll. Be sure to talk some smack in the chat while you’re playing.

Game play is real time and you’re involved short 7-question rounds. No need to worry about being stuck in QuizUp for long periods of time…unless you want to. It took no time at all to rise up a few levels and unlock a few achievements. A quick glance at the leaderboard, however, tells us there’s much work to do if we want to rank globally.

We love the feel of this game; graphics and interface are fantastic and the color palette is perfect. We have a feeling this one will see millions of downloads in no time at all – and for good reason.

Google’s Trekker project brings beautiful Hawaii imagery to Street View

After launching Street View Trekker last year, Google is now starting to show us what we can expect from its loaner program. What you see above are some pictures from the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, which were taken by Google’s first Trekker partner, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, and added to Street View as part of the company’s imagery project. The search giant says there’s a lot more where that came from too, including beaches, historical sites, hiking trails and parks. And with the summer right around the corner, this is a perfect opportunity to virtually explore The Islands of Aloha before booking your next vacation.

Verizon and DirecTV’s internet TV hopes perk up thanks to Dish, Disney

Rumors that existing satellite and cable TV providers would launch full internet streaming services have circled for years, but the new agreement between Dish Network and Disney has suddenly stirred the pot. Between a deal that could actually put ESPN on an internet-only TV service, Verizon buying Intel’s abandoned OnCue effort plus live TV streaming to Xbox One (pictured above) and Sony’s plan for an IPTV package it seems like we’ll actually see something arrive in 2014. Reuters reports Verizon and DirecTV are negotiating with content providers for similar access, as Verizon CEO Lowell C. McAdam told investors he would “love to partner with (content providers) to see how we can take FiOS contact mobilely across the country.” Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s unnamed sources suggest a Dish Network internet TV service could launch for around $20 – $30 per month once enough content deals are in place.

If there is a race among pay-TV providers to launch a cable-style package that streams over the internet, those companies are hardly alone in it. The LA Times reported similar rumors about DirecTV last year, as well as Charter and Time Warner Cable, although Cox’s Flarewatch beta seems to have ended without any wider rollout on the horizon. Comcast’s shift to cloud-based services for its X1 platform has raised the possibility it could expand service outside its footprint, and it’s already offering IPTV services at several colleges with Xfinity on Campus. Whatever offers arise, it seems like they’ll still resemble current cable TV-style bundles of channels for now. Bloomberg sources indicate what many expected, that Disney’s streaming deal still means if Dish offers one of its channels, it has to include others as well. That news won’t necessarily satisfy a la carte seeking cord cutters, but lower entry prices without tying service to outdated set-top boxes would be a start.

4 Smartphone Accessories For Outdoor Enthusiasts

Gorgeous woman on the atvOutdoorsy types — hunters, fishermen and ATV riders, to name a few — utilize mobile technology as much as the indoor types, but their apps are a bit more hands-on. The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project found that 61 percent of Americans owned a smartphone in 2013, and that number will only increase. Outdoor enthusiasts make up a huge part of that group, but they may not be aware of the cool accessories available to enhance their activities. If you’re one of those people, here are four that may interest you:

S4 Gear Jackknife Smartphone Bow Mount

There is no better feeling for bow hunters than a perfect head or neck shot that takes down your target without damaging any of the meat. Now you can share those moments instantly with everyone.

The S4 Gear’s Jackknife Bow Mount gives hunters the ability to shoot video with their smartphone attached right to the bow’s sight mount. It creates a first-person shooter viewpoint that allows you to film and provide commentary simultaneously. Not only will the Jackknife allow you to share your hunting activities with the world, but can also serve as training film to improve your accuracy. The Jackknife sells for around $45.

Anemometer Accessory by Vaavud

There’s one element of nature that can ruin a camping, boating, surfing or hunting trip before it begins: wind. Hunters, for instance, always want to approach prey in the opposite direction of the wind so the animals don’t pick up their scent and escape. Deer, especially, use their olfactory receptors for communication and defense purposes, so knowing the wind’s velocity and direction is important.

The Vaavud Smartphone Anemometer is the perfect accessory for all outdoor activities. Funded by a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, the Vaavud wireless wind meter lets users get accurate readings of wind speed and direction. You can then share the readings instantly online. The device works with most iPhones, along with the Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 and HTC One. The Vaavud wind meter can be purchased for $50.

Arctic Power Bank 4000

Extending trips away from power sources mean the batteries in your device will need some other way to maintain a charge. That’s where the Arctic Power Bank 4000 come into play.

This portable charger and backup battery provides 4000 mAh of power, essentially giving you 16 extra hours of talk time or 20 hours of Web surfing. Its compatible with almost all smartphones, tablets, e-Readers and any other USB-powered device. It’s small enough to fit in your pocket and comes with a case to hold all the cables. Available on Amazon carries for $30.

Arkon SM032 Handlebar Mount

Cameras that mount on ATV helmets are becoming a popular accessory for riders to share their experiences with others. But shooting a second angle can give you more raw footage to work with when editing the finished product.

The Arkon SM032 allows you to mount your smartphone to your handlebars without covering the controls on your touchscreen. The water-resistant zippers around the holder allows you to ride anywhere in any kind of weather. It’s compatible with most smartphones and even the iPod touch. For under $30, it can be yours.

Apple Releases Revamped iTunes Festival App Ahead of SXSW, iOS 7.1 Not Required

Apple today updated its iTunes Festival app to version 5.0, ahead of next week’s SXSW iTunes Festival, which kicks off on Tuesday, March 11. The iTunes Festival app [App Store Link] shows up in the iTunes Store with a revamped icon and is listed as having a “refreshed design” and support for SXSW, but the app isn’t available for download in the U.S. just yet.

Clicking on the download link results in an error message that asks users to try again later, but it will presumably be downloadable shortly. Users in other countries have been able to download the app with iOS 7.0.6, suggesting SXSW streaming does not require iOS 7.1 as was reported earlier this week.

Apple’s SXSW iTunes Festival is the first it has hosted in the United States, with previous iTunes Festivals occurring annually in London. The festival will offer five free nights of music, beginning on March 11 at Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas. Featured artists include Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Kendrick Lamar, Soundgarden, Pitbull, Keith Urban, and more.

All of Apple’s iTunes Festival concerts are presented for free, with tickets available via a lottery system. Live and on-demand streams of the shows will be available through the revamped iTunes Festival app and via the Apple TV.
