Director Robert Rodriguez is expanding on the story and characters first seen in his cult classic From Dusk Till Dawn with a new TV series, but that’s not all there is to it. Here it’s the debut original series on Rodriguez’s new El Rey Network on cable, but outside the US Miramax has cut a deal with Netflix giving the streamer exclusive rights to all ten episodes. That means this time around Netflix will follow the weekly episode release schedule (like it did with Breaking Bad) instead of bingeing House of Cards-style, bringing new episodes within 24 hours of the US broadcast everywhere except Latin America. The US premiere is March 11th, while in Latin America it will premiere March 19th, with weekly releases after that — in an unrelated note, Canada’s Trailer Park Boys are returning with a whole new season on Netflix later this year.

A renewed Miramax has been a big player in streaming, making an initial US deal with Netflix in early 2011, followed by another one for international streaming rights in the same year. Since then, it’s also opened its vaults to Hulu, Amazon Prime and Lovefilm / Amazon Prime Instant Video UK. The new series is debuting this week at SXSW, and according to Rodriguez “the film was the short story, this series is the novel.” We’ll once again follow the Gecko Bros. as they try to escape across the border after a bank heist and make a detour to a strip club filled with vampires. It’s a familiar tale, but this time shoving 10 episodes full of grindhouse-style mayhem instead of a brief two hour movie — check out the official trailer after the break for a taste.

LG’s L90 handset is rolling out this week… in Russia

If the debut of LG’s L-series of handsets at last month’s Mobile World Congress had you hankering for a new phone, you’re in luck. The 4.7-inch L90 starts rolling out this week in the CIS region (think Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia). LG has also detailed a few new specs, as well. In addition to the 1.2GHz processor, the L90 comes with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM and a 2,540mAh battery. Its cameras are rated at 1.3MP up front, and 5MP or 8MP for the rear. Pricing and domestic availability remain ambiguous for now, but the South Korean outfit promises more local info will be available closer to a domestic launch. To pass the time until then, you could always work out your own custom Knock pattern; we recommend the beat from “Around the Fur” by the Deftones for maximum cool-points.

Facebook and Instagram step in with age limits on firearms ads, new rules for sellers

For most, Facebook’s “Look Back” videos were a whimsical retrospective covering a decade of social networking. For Moms Demand Action, an advocacy group that supports gun control laws, the nostalgic campaign was a opportunity to be heard. The group published a parody Look Back video highlighting pages and posts that use the social network to set up gun sales between private parties, some of which violated Facebook’s community standards. Now, Zuckerberg and Co. have responded, announcing a handful of new policies designed to help keep posts promoting the sale of regulated goods within the letter of the law.

It’s a challenging situation, Facebook says — the social network doesn’t want to restrict its users’ ability to communicate or express themselves on the service, but also recognizes that its communication platform can be abused. To this end, it’s instituting a series of “educational and enforcement efforts for people discussing the private sale of regulated items.” Specifically, Facebook will limit access to posts promoting the private sale of regulated items (read: firearms) to users over the age of 18. Folks posting this material will also receive a friendly reminder to keep their business legal. Pages and groups promoting the same activity will also be required to use language reminding folks that there are specific rules and regulations policing the sale of such goods, and likewise, these pages will also be blocked to users under 18.

There will be a few rules about how users can promote their private sales as well, forbidding language that “indicates a willingness to evade or help others evade the law.” This means posts offering to sell weapons across state lines without employing a licensed firearms dealer are strictly forbidden, as are posts advertising “no background check required.” While the legal necessity of the latter stipulation actually varies from state to state, Facebook’s umbrella policy is probably wise — it’s better to play it safe when allowing your users to trade in weaponry.

In addition to the new rules for posts, pages and groups, Facebook says that users searching for firearm sales or promotions on Instagram will be offered special in-app education, presumably reminding them to check their local laws to ensure their transactions are legitimate. Finally, the company pledges to actively remove violating content and notify law enforcement when things get too shady — and naturally, the firm encourages its users to report anything that violates the new or existing policies. It’s not the full firearm-promotion ban that some advocacy groups wanted, but Facebook says it feels that it’s the “right approach in balancing people’s desire to express themselves while promoting a safe, responsible community.”

Ask select Motorola phones ‘what’s up?’ to hear notifications read aloud

Motorola’s Touchless Control app just got an upgrade that’ll make perpetually busy people happy. Now, the app can read notifications out loud when you ask “what’s up?,” which sounds especially useful for hectic morning commutes. If you’re feeling extra dull and unfriendly, though, you can always tell it to “read notifications” instead. The new feature’s fully available in English, Italian and Spanish, but it might be available in other languages in the future. Other than adding touchless access to notifications, the upgrade also enhances the app’s ability to detect when you’re done issuing commands.

If you just bought a Motorola phone, you may also want to check out the company’s Migrate app, which just got the capability to make more customized content transfers. As a bonus, it now automatically imports SIM contacts to a Google account of your choice, though these new features will only work if you’re moving from another Android device. Unfortunately, both apps are still only compatible with the Moto X, Droid Ultra, Mini and Maxx (Migrate’s list includes Moto G, though), so everyone outside that exclusive circle will have to look for alternatives.

Mirror Beta Now Allows You to Use Chromecast to Mirror What’s on Your Nexus 5

mirror-nexus5-chromcast

Chromecast is one of those little devices that many of us wonder how we survived without. To be able to control your TV and watch movies from your phone or tablet, is just a nerd haven for excitement. The only thing that can make it better is if you can just display everything that is on your device through your Chromemcast. Sadly we can only achieve that with certain apps that have Chromecast support, but developer Koush is now making that mirroring possible.

Koush unleashed an update for Mirror Beta today, for anyone with a Nexus 5 to mirror their homescreen onto their TVs. I must stress Nexus 5, because that is the only device capable to do this awesome task. Koush claims, “This is because Nexus 5 is the only phone on the market that has a hardware vp8 encoder.” You do have to be rooted as well, which is something I have yet to do on my Nexus 5. Laziness I suppose, but I am going to play the “I’m too busy” card.

So head over to the link provided below to give it a try if you rock a Nexus 5 in your pocket. Let us know if works for you. Also check out his brief demo video.

Apple Executives Receive More Than 30,000 Restricted Shares in Bonuses [Mac Blog]

Six Apple executives received more than 30,000 shares of stock in the form of restricted stock units or RSUs according to a series of filings with the SEC. RSUs are typically issued to employees to encourage them to stay with the company. They are awarded in a similar way to stock options, but convert directly into shares of stock upon vesting.

At current prices, the awards are worth as much as $12.1 million per executive.

Apple Executives
In this case, the shares appear to have been awarded as part of the executives’ 2014 compensation package. Apple Senior Vice Presidents Eddy Cue, Craig Federighi, Dan Riccio, Phil Schiller, Bruce Sewell, and Jeffrey Williams all received equal bonus awards, with shares granted thusly:

– 22,738 RSUs with one-third of the units scheduled to vest into full shares of Apple stock on April 1 of 2016, 2017 and 2018.

– 6,626 RSUs scheduled to vest on October 1, 2015, with that number subject to adjustment based on Apple’s total shareholder return.

– 6,416 RSUs scheduled to vest on October 1, 2016 with the same adjustments as the 2015 award.

In June of 2013, Apple’s board adjusted the company’s executive compensation package to consider shareholder return, as compared to companies in the S&P 500, as part of senior management’s bonus scheme. In this case, Apple executives can see their award increased by as much as 100%, or decreased to 0, depending on the company’s performance.

Apple executives typically receive bonus awards every other year, with bonuses paid out over several years as part of the company’s overall executive retention package. Executives who leave the company see their unvested RSU’s expire. Tim Cook did not receive any awards as his compensation package is determined independently of his senior staff.

Mozilla to improve web page load times through image trickery

Ever tried loading websites full of selfies and filtered food images on a shabby connection? If your answer is yes, then you know it always leads to tears and frustration. Good thing Mozilla’s got your back — the non-profit behind Firefox just announced a project called mozjpeg, which aims to shrink JPEG file sizes for faster-loading web pages. To get the ball rolling, the group made a fork of an existing JPEG codec (libjpeg-turbo) and threw in a feature that crunches photos without affecting quality. That gave rise to mozjpeg software version 1.0, which successfully shrunk the file sizes of 1,500 JPEG photos by an average of 10 percent during a test run. It even worked on PNG images, though it was a lot less effective and only managed to shave 2 to 6 percent off their sizes.

Mozilla chose to improve JPEG compression instead of developing an alternative because the org believes the two-decade-old standard won’t be going away anytime soon. Also, unlike newer choices (such as Google’s WebP) that promise better quality at smaller sizes, JPEG’s already compatible with most software and browsers. Sticking to JPEG means you won’t have to endure years of poor compatibility, and you can now get through a lot more cat pics on your coffee break.

‘Wello’ iPhone case can track your blood pressure, temperature and more

Last year, Scanadu caught our attention with Scout, its simple-to-use tricorder-style health monitor. Now a new iPhone case promises to make monitoring your vital signs even easier. Called Wello, the case has sensors built in that can give you a picture of your overall health after holding it a special way for just a few seconds. The slim device measures your heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and blood oxygen levels and displays the ECG waves from your heart — you can even test your lung function through a small included attachment you blow into.

Designed to be both fast and simple to use, the prototype we tried out this week was ultra-light, and thinner than the Speck case on one of our iPhones. Readings are done with your hands in a comfortable position, and the health tracker was able to return our vital signs as well as a fancy ECG graph of our heart in just a few seconds. Out of the box, you’ll be able to pair it with your Wi-Fi scale and fitness tracker, so you can keep an overall picture of your health in the same place. Over time, additional add-ons could become available for the case to test for other things like glucose. Everything you track can be viewed on a daily, weekly, or monthly scale so you can see at a glance if your health starts to change.

Founder and CEO Hamish Patel has been working on the technology behind Wello for two years. He told us that he sees the device not only being useful for people in the US, but even more so for people in developing countries where access to health services are limited. When the $199 device ships this fall (pending FDA approval) it will be available for the iPhone 4S, 5, and 5S in 35 countries. Android users can also use Wello, but as a standalone device rather than a case for their phone. All of the tech for Wello is contained in a removable card roughly the thickness of your average business card. Azio plans to make the card available for other manufacturers to include in cases, so you might ultimately see Wello come to a third-party Android case, or even a different iPhone case.

Wello is open for pre-orders today in United States as well as Canada, China, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Kingdom and across the EU. Early buyers can earn $10 for each person they get to pre-order — depending on how many people you refer, tracking your health could be not only easy, it could be free.
