Moto G owners facing problems after Android 4.4 update

Motorola recently updated the Moto G to Android 4.4, but it turns out the update brought some troubles as well. Users are complaining that after the update, they are facing several issues. Below is the list of bugs that you might be facing if you have updated your Moto G:

  • lose mobile signal
  • display ‘No Sim’ icons,
  • fall into Aeroplane mode (while not displaying Aeroplane Icon status)
  • Mobile signal can often be recovered by swapping into and out of Aeroplane mode.
  • Pop-up errors about being in Aeroplane mode while attempting to make calls during signal problems.
  • Aeroplane mode observed in about phone status (while no aeroplane mode shown on icons)
  • Popup errors – the process “com.android.phone” has stopped
  • Not specific to individual SIM cards – multiple SIMs (cutdown/original confirmed as impacted)
  • Suggestion that it only occurs with mobile data enabled – to be investigated.

moto_g_shells_croppedWell, these are a lot of bugs, but you can relax because Motorola is aware, and they are working on a solution. However, such problems happen rarely because the update is always tested on the device before official launch, but you never know when the bugs will show up.

Any Moto G user out there facing such issues? Let us know in the comment box below.

The LG G Pad 8.3 LTE variant is officially announced, and will be available at Verizon Wireless beginning March 6th. For the first four days, it will be available for $100 on-contract. After March 10th, the normal price of the tablet will be $300 off-contract, and $200 with a two year agreement.

Yes, that’s right, the unlocked LTE G Pad is $50 less than buying the WiFi-only model. There is no word yet as to whether or not the original G Pad will price-drop, but we’re assuming it will shortly.

‘Oscar’ Adapter Connects Retina iPad Display Panel to Macs via Thunderbolt [Mac Blog]

Oscar, a new Kickstarter project currently seeking funding, is an Arduino-compatible adapter that’s able to connect a high-resolution screen to a computer. The adapter comes attached to the same 9.7-inch display used in Apple’s Retina iPads, and uses DisplayPort or Thunderbolt to connect to a computer.

When connected to a Mac, the Oscar adapter allows the high-resolution 2048 x 1536 panel to be used as a second screen.

OSCAR is an adapter that allows you to connect a super high resolution 9.7″ screen, often found in tablets, to your computer. It comes pre-connected to the LCD panel ready to be attached and is compatible will all operating systems using a Thunderbolt or DisplayPort connection. The board is Arduino compatible which makes modifying the behaviour easy and all the software and hardware is open source.

The complete Oscar kit includes an LCD screen that comes with an acrylic case and a stand, allowing it to be used for a range of second-screen purposes. The adapter included with the display powers the LED backlight and controls the power supply. Because it’s Arduino compatible, the adapter can be used to control variables like backlight brightness through USB.

The full Oscar kit, with display, laser cut acrylic case, power supply, stand, and DisplayPort/USB cables can be obtained through a £150 pledge, equivalent to approximately $250. The screen alone can be purchased for £110, or $183, and the panels are expected to begin shipping in July of 2014.

Update 1:09 PM PST: As MacRumors forum user rootyb has pointed out, a similar product from Adafruit is already available for purchase for $250.

Lightning Cables Failing Due to Corrosion, Cause Unclear [iOS Blog]

Since being introduced alongside the iPhone 5 in 2012, Apple’s Lightning cable has been criticized for its poor durability, as it is prone to breakage and fraying near the adapter.

It appears the Lightning cable may be vulnerable to corrosion as well, according to a report from ZDNet‘s Jason O’Grady, who noticed corrosion on the gold contacts of his Lightning cable after it had been failing to charge his iPhone.

corrodedlightningcable

About a month ago the Apple Lightning to USB cable (PN: MD818ZM/A, $19) that I keep in my vehicle for charging my iPhone 5s began to fail. At first charging was intermittent, then within a week the cable wouldn’t charge my iPhone at all. A closer look at the male end of the Apple Lightning to USB cable reveals that several of the gold contacts have become corroded.

In addition to O’Grady, several other users on Apple’s Support Communities have experienced corrosion issues as well, with reports dating back to 2012. Several users have been told by Apple that it is likely that the cables were exposed to moisture to cause the corrosion, but several reports suggest there was no contact with liquid before the corrosion appeared.

Apple Community user “Brockap3″ supplied photos of his Lightning cable under a microscope and suggested that the corrosion was happening primarily on the VBUS/V++/Power pin on the Lightning cable. He offered two explanations for the issue:

1) two gold electrodes placed in an aqueous solution with a positive voltage on one wire and ground applied to the other will corrode the positive gold electrode away

2) electrical arcing causing the corrosion (originally I dismissed this as it is just USB – i.e. 5 V /2 A max)

After examining the male and female sides, it would seem both are likely culprits, but you would have to have some pretty serious condensation on the pins to get this to happen with steam.

Apple does appear to be exchanging Lightning cables that are unusable due to the corrosive deposits, so it is likely that users experiencing issues can have their cables replaced at an Apple retail location or through an Authorized Service Provider.

Google Play Store’s 2nd Birthday is soon, Happy Birthday Deals Coming

The official swap from the Android Market to the Google Play Store happened almost 2 years ago. I can’t believe it has been that long. I still vividly remember how anti Play Store everyone was for the first 6 months or so, so much so that people even reverted back to the Android Market and turned updates off they didn’t have to see the new Play Store. As with all things over time everyone became more accepting and now we can’t live without it.

Google Play Store Second Birthday DealAs with all Birthdays and events that are pretty important in Androids life, Google like to celebrate a little with some deals for us all. The 2nd Birthday of the Play Store re-branding is no different and apparently there will be some pretty sweet little deals rolling out soon. A tipster on Reddit from Australia shared the details. While here in the U.S. I am not able to. However, if you toggle your region to Australia with your tech savvy trickery, you can pull them up. In a nutshell, we should see these same offers posting up on our U.S. Play Store late tonight since Australia is considerably further ahead in time than we are.

The Birthday deals will run across all the various offerings of the Play Store. From Books, to Magazines, to a 24-hour music sale to apps and games. The list that was compiled is particularly for Australian users and we are pretty certain that the U.S. offerings and price tags will be a bit different. Here is the list that has been compiled though.

  • “FIFA 14″ by EA – Free
  • “MOVIE: Disaster Movie: – AU$0.99
  • GQ Australia Magazine Subscription – 30% off
  • “Theme Park” By EA – Free
  • “BOOK: I Came To Say Goodbye” by Caroline Overington – AU$4.99
  • “Heroes of Dragon Age” By EA – Free
  • “Tiny City” by Chillingo International – Free
  • “BOOK: Outback Dreams” by Rachael Johns – AU$4.99
  • “The Sims Free to Play” by EA – Free
  • “MAGAZINE: Taste.com.au” – AU$2.99
  • “Need for Speed Most Wanted” by EA – AU$5.49
  • “MOVIE: Vanity Fair” – AU$0.99
  • “Bejeweled Blitz” by EA – Free
  • “BOOK: The Luminaries” by Eleanor Catton – AU$4.99
  • “MOVIE: Thirteen” – AU$0.99
  • “BOOK: Burning Lies” by Helene Young – AU$4.99
  • “Dungeon Keeper” by EA – Free
  • “MAGAZINE: Super Food Ideas” – AU$1.99
  • “Dead Ahead Game” by Chillingo International – Free
  • “NBA Jam” by EA – AU$5.49

Fairly certain NBA Jam won’t go up by $0.50 for a birthday deal. Also, titles that are already free will be free, of course that means there will be specials on in-app purchases or various little party packs, add-ons or little things inside the games.

We will be keeping our eyes peeled for when they are live and do our best to alert you. Alternatively, the permalink for the deals location page has already been outed. Just head to the Google Play Store. It won’t be found on the server yet, but it should come on live later.

Video shows off Microsoft’s Cortana virtual assistant in action

“Hi there. I’m Cortana. I can help make life a bit easier for you.” These are the first words of Microsoft’s still unannounced virtual assistant codenamed “Cortana,” according to a new video leaked by UnleashThePhones.com. If it’s true, this is the best look we’ve had of the rumored Windows Phone 8.1 service so far. The video begins by showing Cortana as a dedicated Live Tile, and then takes us through the setup process. You’ll be prompted to login with your Microsoft Account, which is required to enjoy all of the service’s features; according to the permissions page, Cortana will have access to sources like your location data, voice input, contacts, calendar, search history, emails and texts, browser history and more.

After you’re logged in, it’s time for you two to get better acquainted. To help along the process, Cortana asks a series of four questions about yourself, which the service then uses to personalize some of its suggestions and recommendations. The video also displays a new feature called quiet hours, which lets Cortana take care of your texts and calls for you while you’re sleeping. We’re expecting an official announcement and more details at next month’s Build conference, but in the meantime you can find the full video below.

Rival cycle: Beats Music VP of product reportedly headed to Spotify

It looks like Beats Music’s uphill battle to upstage the incumbent streaming services just took a hit. CNET reports that Fredric Vinna, product lead and one of the outfit’s early creators (alongside Trent Reznor et al.) back in 2011, is on his way to one of its biggest rivals: Spotify. The departure comes a little over a month after the launch of Beats Music and is breaking on the heels of the acquisition of Topspin — whose ArtistLink service is embedded inside both streaming options for merch and ticket sales. Artist Tools in Beats Music are also built using the Topspin’s platform, and the duo should bring even more artist-to-listener interaction as the service looks to further differentiate itself. However, now it’s in need of a new captain to take the product reigns.

Beats Music declined to comment on the matter when we reached out. We’ve contacted Spotify as well and we’ll be sure to update this post when we hear back.

Microsoft’s got a wireless display fix in the works for Surface users

Sure, the Surface 2 supports Miracast, giving you the power to beam the contents of your screen wirelessly to some other, larger display. But not everyone has a compatible HDTV, which leaves us with that messy wired situation and that’s no good for 2014. Ah, but there is a solution on the way and it’s one Microsoft is hiding (in plain FCC sight) for the time being. That accessory, non-creatively dubbed the Surface Wireless Display Adapter, is none other than an HDMI dongle Microsoft’s crafted to enable wireless mirroring for those of you with Surface 2′s, or Pro 2′s, and out of date HDTV sets. The filing doesn’t reveal much about the adapter’s design, but we do know that it supports dual-band WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n and could possibly see the light of day sometime this August. Or at least, that’s when the filing’s short-term confidentiality agreement is up. Regardless, at some point this year, you’ll have another surface on which to surface the contents of your Surface. You get the point.

PC shipments faced their steepest-ever drop in 2013

Row of HP laptops running Windows 8

We hate to say it, but the era of near-constant PC industry growth might be over. IDC estimates that computer shipments fell by 9.8 percent in 2013, representing the steepest drop ever recorded. There just isn’t much momentum in developing markets like China or Latin America, according to researchers. Sluggish economies and the shift toward mobile devices have cooled demand that was once red-hot. More established regions fared slightly better, although they may have been helped by a rush of users upgrading from Windows XP in the fourth quarter. IDC expects a partial recovery in the long run, but it believes that shipments have largely flattened out. If that’s the case, PC vendors face much fiercer competition than they have in the past — they may have to resort to extra-low prices and other extreme measures to keep buyers interested.
