Galaxy S4 and Note 3 KitKat update removes benchmark-improving code

You may remember the controversy that was caused when it was discovered that Samsung had implemented code in the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 which boosted their benchmark scores in an attempt to falsify the performance of the device. It seems that Samsung has chosen to remove this offending code in the latest Android 4.4 KitKat update for the devices.

Scores run on the 4.4 KitKat build of the devices came up short when compared to the same benchmark test conducted on the Jelly Bean variation of the device. The single-core score went from 682 to 674 and the multi-core score dropped from 2114 to 1913.

It seems that Samsung’s KitKat builds have had the ‘com.sec.android.app.twdvfs’ package removed, which was previously present and suggested at being responsible for this performance-boosting result.

Perhaps Samsung learnt their lesson? Despite fudging the benchmark results, the devices are still some of the quickest on the market.

Vudu will soon let you send movies to your Chromecast

Vudu on Android

There isn’t exactly an abundance of major movie services that will send video to a Chromecast; for the most part, Google Play Movies and Netflix still rule the roost. It’s a good thing, then, that Vudu has announced plans to support the TV media adapter through both updated mobile apps and Chrome on the desktop. The provider won’t say just when Chromecast support is coming other than “soon,” but early adopters can register for a beta test. Either way, it’s clear that Vudu still wants its video platform on every living room device you own.

[Thanks, Mark]

Samsung devices no longer boosting benchmark scores after Android 4.4 update

Those artificially inflated benchmark scores Samsung devices were getting last year? They’ve been patched. According to new tests run by Ars Technica, Samsung devices running Android 4.4 no longer boost CPU speeds during benchmark tests. In July, Exynos variants of the Galaxy S 4 and Note 3 were caught running their CPUs at an unsustainable max speed during benchmark programs, bolstering their total score by as much as 20 percent. Samsung suggested this was normal, claiming that varied processor frequencies were designed to provide an “optimal user experience.” The firm never clearly explained if the phenomenon was a feature, fault or foul play, but it’s over now: devices updated to the latest version of Android are apparently running clean.

Apple to Reportedly Stop Production of 13-Inch Non-Retina MacBook Pro Later This Year

Apple will cease production of the 13-inch non-Retina MacBook Pro later this year in favor of its thinner Retina notebooks, according to a new report from DigiTimes. The 13-inch non-Retina MacBook Pro, which last saw an update in June 2012, has remained as Apple’s only MacBook Pro without a high-resolution screen after the 15-inch non-Retina MacBook Pro was discontinued last year.

macbook_line_oct13
Apple has been expected to discontinue its standard MacBook Pros for quite some time in favor of an all Retina lineup. After Apple announced and subsequently released updated Retina MacBook Pros last October, the company cut the price of the entry level 13-inch Retina model to $1,299 – just $100 more than the non-Retina version.

The company is also expected to update its 13-inch and 15-inch Retina MacBook Pros in the future with Intel’s forthcoming Broadwell chips, however the exact timing of those updates remains uncertain and differs for both models. While chips for the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro are not expected to launch until the first quarter of 2015, chips for the 15-inch models are expected to be released at certain points throughout 2014. Rumors have also suggested that Apple is working on a 12-inch Retina notebook for the middle of this year.

Invites to Meizu event on March 6th sent out; is a Meizu MX4 on the Cards?

meizu mx4While Meizu isn’t a particularly big name outside of its native China, within the country, Meizu is one of the rockstars of the Chinese smartphone market. Its Meizu MX3 smartphone was a surprising star, combining Meizu’s own FLYME 3.0 interface with some great hardware, like Samsung’s Exynos octa-core processor, to make one very impressive package (check out our first look at the device here). Their next phone, a possible Meizu MX4, could be just around the corner as Meizu has started sending out invites for an event in Paris on March 6th.

The invitation suggests very little about what the event could be about, and while a new Meizu MX4 would be an amazing announcement, the event is more likely to launch the Meizu brand in Europe with the MX3 spearheading this effort. Meizu has been gradually extending their presence around the world and selling devices in Europe would be a logical next move for the smartphone manufacturer.

What do you think will be announced at the March 6th event in Paris? Do you think they could really be announcing the Meizu MX4? Let us know what you think in the comments.

FreedomPop’s new smartphone keeps your calls and data private for $189

FreedomPop Privacy Phone

When surveillance agencies collect large volumes of cellular data, it’s easy to understand why you’d want an extra-secure smartphone. Those devices aren’t always affordable, though, which is why FreedomPop has launched the Privacy Phone for $189 contract-free. It’s ultimately an old Galaxy S II, but its software boasts some strong secrecy measures — all of its internet-based calls and messages are encrypted, and data goes through a virtual private network (VPN) that masks your identity. Don’t count on total security. FreedomPop isn’t using more than 128-bit encryption, and VPNs aren’t always safe from prying eyes. Still, the Privacy Phone may fit the bill if you’re looking for better-than-usual anonymity at a low price.
