App lets you attach digital messages to real-world objects… for fun?
For those who don’t know, Project Tango is a Google-built prototype smartphone jam packed with Kinect-like 3D sensors and components. One of Mountain View’s software partners involved in the project, FlyBy Media, has built what it’s calling the first consumer app capable of utilizing Tango’s image recognition skills to… chat with friends. Dubbed FlyBy, the app allows users to share text and videos messages by attaching them to a real-world object; like a menu at your favorite restaurant or collectible from your honeymoon. Recipients are notified once they’re in close proximity, then they need only to scan said object and voila, message received. While the concept isn’t new — or popular… yet — the company believes that this time people will catch on. Just think of it as geocaching your conversations. That could be fun, right?

Best Buy Offering Free 16GB iPhone 5s With Trade-In of iPhone 4s or 5 [iOS Blog]
Best Buy is introducing another special deal this weekend, offering a minimum of $150 for trade-ins of working iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 smartphones. Customers must buy a new smartphone with two-year contract on AT&T, Sprint or Verizon, however. The offer is good through the end of the day tomorrow, March 1. The chain has also reduced the price of the base 16GB iPhone 5s to $150 to match the buyback.

With a number of carriers moving away from two-year contracts for its customers — instead focusing on non-subsidized, but cheaper, monthly plans — it may be affecting the bottom line of retailers like Best Buy because plans like AT&T Next do not, in many cases, require customers to pay money up front.
For upgrade-eligible iPhone-owners looking to move to the iPhone 5s, this promotion could be an inexpensive way to do that.![]()
Tim Cook Angrily Rejects Political Proposal Asking for Profits-First Policies
During Apple’s annual shareholder’s meeting today, CEO Tim Cook angrily rebuffed a representative from the National Center for Public Policy Research or NCPPR — a conservative think tank — that asked the company to disclose the costs of its sustainability programs, such as solar energy facilities, and to embrace a corporate policy that focused on profits above all else.
The representative asked Cook about the impact of the company’s renewable energy programs on its bottom line, and also asked Cook to commit to only undertaking projects that were explicitly profitable.
The CEO did not take this well, according to a report from MacObserver, which said that Cook’s body language changed significantly and his gentle and controlled speaking style gave way to a rapid-fire response.
What ensued was the only time I can recall seeing Tim Cook angry, and he categorically rejected the worldview behind the NCPPR’s advocacy. He said that there are many things Apple does because they are right and just, and that a return on investment (ROI) was not the primary consideration on such issues.
“When we work on making our devices accessible by the blind,” he said, “I don’t consider the bloody ROI.” He said that the same thing about environmental issues, worker safety, and other areas where Apple is a leader.
Finally, Cook looked at the questioner and said “if you want me to do things only for ROI reasons, you should get out of this stock.”
Following the meeting, the NCPPR released an incendiary press release that is heavily critical of Cook, flaming that shareholder value is destroyed in favor of efforts to combat climate change.

Nokia X rooted and gets Google Now Launcher, the Play Store and Google Apps loaded Too!
A lot of Android purists lost hope for Nokia’s first Android foray, the Nokia X, when they heard that it would instead run a forked version of Android that used Nokia’s own app store instead of the Google Play Store. That’s totally understandable, but being Android underneath, it was only a matter of time before we heard the words “Nokia X rooted” from the guys over at XDA. Not only is it rooted, it also has the Google Play Store, Google apps and Google Now Launcher installed onto it. Check out a video of Google Now Launcher running on the Nokia X:
There you have it: there’s hope for this device yet! If you’re interested in getting a Nokia X now, there’s a guide in the XDA Forums with more pictures (link down below) that will take you through how to root the Nokia X, which apparently has a locked bootloader of sorts. Once that’s done though, your Nokia X will run as the Android device it was born to be.
What do you think about the Nokia X getting rooted? Are you more convinced about getting one now? Let us know what you think in the comments.
Drew Bamford drops some hints about the all new HTC One and the HTC smartwatch
While we’ve been getting a fair number of leaks and rumours surrounding the all new HTC One, previously codenamed the HTC M8, we’ve heard very little from HTC themselves about the device apart from when the announcement event is going to be. Thankfully, Androidworld managed to catch up with Drew Bamford, HTC’s lead software designer, at MWC 2014 and got his thoughts on a few things including the all new HTC One and the HTC smartwatch. About the new Sense UI, Bamford had this to say:
“I think the great thing is that you won’t have to wait three years or even a year. On March 25th, we’re going to have a lot more to talk about with some new experiences that you’ll be very excited about. And really, what we’re doing there is capitalizing on the experiences that have been successful in HTC Sense 5 and 5.5 and really taking them to the next level. faster Access to the information that’s important to you, a more responsive experience that understand you and anticipates your needs and more ways to express yourself with your phone.”
So straight from the horse’s mouth: if Sense 6.0 wasn’t already a sure thing, I think that pretty much confirms that the all new HTC One will have HTC’s next iteration of their user experience. Bamford went on to also talk about HTC’s upcoming smartwatch and their design considerations:
“We think wearables are a very exciting category/ we’ve said publicly that we’re working on wearables – we have been for some time. The reason we have not released one yet is because we want to do it right. You’ll see us bring out some wearables when we feel we’ve actually gotten to the right point in terms on craftsmanship, design, integrated experiences. That’s what we’re aiming for. We want it to feel like a natural part of your every-day life rather than a new gadget.”
It’s definitely a bold statement as I think many of us feel that nobody has truly captured the perfect wearable or smartwatch yet. Still, HTC’s fans would say that if anyone could do it, it would be HTC, so let’s see what happens come March 25th. For the full interview, check out the video down below:
What do you think about all this? Is this reaffirming your faith in HTC’s abilities? Let us know your opinion in the comments below.

[LEAK] Evleaks tweets carrier versions of the all new HTC One, including Verizon and AT&T
If any of our U.S. readers were wondering whether the all new HTC One was going to be coming to American carriers, you now have some kind of confirmation (if there was any doubt at all), for Verizon and AT&T customers at least. King of leaks, evleaks, has today tweeted two press renders of carrier versions of the all new HTC One bearing branding from Verizon (above) and AT&T (below).
There’s probably very little to glean from these pictures apart from the fact that the new HTC flagship will be coming to these carriers and that now we actually get a decent picture of the all new HTC One. The new device is expected to be announced at a March 25th event in New York City alongside HTC’s first attempt at a smartwatch. If HTC can walk the walk, especially with all the jabs they’re talking at Samsung, then the all new HTC One is definitely going to be a formidable device.
Are you going to be getting the all new HTC One? Let us know what you think about the device in the comments.

Muzei HD Landscapes sets beautiful landscapes as your wallpaper through Muzei [App of the Day]
In case you missed our initial coverage of the Muzei Live Wallpaper, it is a live wallpaper that sets pieces of art as your wallpaper, rotating every day. Created by the developer of the popular Dashclock Widget, Muzei allows you to download extensions to replace the featured art with wallpapers of your choosing. One of the best extensions we’ve found is called Muzei HD Landscapes.
The app is simple – download it, set it as your Muzei extension of choice, and that’s it. The reason we liked this app so much is for the customization options. This extension allows you to update via WiFi only, change the hours it takes to rotate pictures, and it even allows you to change the image resolution.
It is a relatively new app, with less than 500 Google Play downloads at the time of writing this. If you’re a fan of Muzei, you’ll probably be a fan of Muzei HD Landscapes.

Apple to Charge Fees for Out-of-Warranty Chat Support
Apple is planning to institute fees for users that are seeking online chat support for out-of-warranty products, reports 9to5Mac. The company has reportedly been working on a new web payment system that includes a paid chat support feature as well as a function allowing customers to schedule product repairs and replacements.
Currently, customers can use Apple Support’s online chat feature at no cost to receive technical support on out-of-warranty products that are not covered by AppleCare, but the new rules would bring chat support under the same umbrella as Apple’s phone support, which does carry fees for products with expired warranty periods.
All of Apple’s products receive 90 days of phone support at purchase, which can be extended to three years with AppleCare. Customers seeking over-the-phone help for out-of-warranty products must pay a fee between $29 and $49. A similar fee of $19.99 will be required for chat support going forward, though users will be able to request an exception to the fee.
Apple has also developed a system that will allow customers to make payments via its support website, and that system will be used to set up hardware repairs and replacements via chat.
Using the new web payment system, we’re told Apple plans to offer the ability to set up hardware repairs via chat that require a hold on a credit card or pay per incident fee. Rather than having to call in, users will be sent a link that’s live for 24 hours in order to complete the payment.
Chat fees reportedly began appearing in August following Apple’s support site redesign that introduced 24/7 live chat, but thus far, employees have been instructed to grant exceptions on all support requests up to the official launch of the paid service.
Apple’s new chat support policies may go into effect as soon as next week, but the company will reportedly be waiving fees for iCloud issues and accidental damage cases where users are requesting to purchase repair or a replacement via chat.![]()
Tim Cook Says Apple’s Sapphire Facility Is for ‘Secret Project’
When asked about Apple’s U.S. manufacturing efforts during a question-and-answer session with Apple shareholders today, CEO Tim Cook said the company’s new sapphire production facility was for a “secret project” that he couldn’t talk about, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
Cook did not give any more information, but did say separately that the company is working on “extensions of what we’re already doing” and also “things you can’t see”. He reiterated that secrecy is important because Apple is “getting ripped off left, right and sideways” by competitors.
In response to a question about manufacturing in the U.S., Cook pointed to a plant a supplier recently opened in Arizona to produce sapphire exclusively for Apple. There’s been speculation that Apple may use the super-hard sapphire to produce scratch-resistant screens for future iPhones. Cook said the Arizona facility was a “secret project” that he couldn’t talk about.
But then, he said other Apple suppliers “already make” glass for iPhones in the U.S. An Apple spokeswoman declined additional comment.
Apple routinely denies having any particular new project in the works, so it’s possible that a future iPhone model with an ultra-durable sapphire screen is the “secret project” to which Cook is referring, though there are a number of other possibilities for sapphire crystal including a potential smart watch product.
Cook previously confirmed that the plant would make sapphire, but the company has thus far refused to say anything more about it. He also said that investors should plan to hold Apple stock for the long term, saying to investors looking for a quick turnaround, “I encourage you not to invest in Apple.”![]()
