Samsung executives to see pay cuts in the light of company hardships
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Things are not good at Samsung – profits are falling, lay-offs have hit their workforce, and even the work culture at the Korean manufacturer has come into question. They always say change comes at the top, and now Samsung executives are starting to feel the pinch as well. A new report from The Korea Herald has said that some of Samsung’s highest paid executives have taken significant pay cuts in the light of the company’s struggles.
Samsung vice chairman Kwon Oh-hyun has taken a cut from 6.25 billion won last year to 3.82 billion won this year, CEO of consumer electronics Yoon Boo-keun dropped from 3.61 billion to 2.34 billion won and CEO of mobile business Shin Jong-kyun was the worst off of all with a drop from 12.03 billion to 2.28 billion won.
Now, these men are still being paid a ridiculous amount of money with still gargantuan bonuses – which shouldn’t be surprising since they still helm one of the biggest tech companies in the world – but it’s clear to see the effect poor financial performances have had on everyone at Samsung, particularly those in the mobile division.
What do you think about the pay cuts to Samsung executives? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Apple Stops Selling iPhone-Connected Smart Locks from August and Kevo
Over the course of the last week, Apple appears to have ceased selling two popular smart lock products in its retail stores and online. Neither the August Smart Lock nor the Kwikset Kevo Wireless-Enabled Deadbolt Lock are listed on Apple’s website, but both were still for sale on November 13.
The August Smart Lock and the Kwikset Kevo are both Bluetooth-enabled locks that allow users to unlock their doors using their iPhones. It is not clear why Apple has decided to stop selling the locks, but it could be in an effort to highlight only products that offer HomeKit compatibility. The Kwikset Kevo and the August Smart Lock are not HomeKit-enabled products and cannot be used with other HomeKit devices.

While Apple is no longer selling the Kwikset Kevo or the August Smart Lock, it is selling the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt, another smart lock that does offer HomeKit compatibility. The Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt is in fact the only locking product that offers HomeKit integration thus far. August has debuted a second-generation product that includes HomeKit integration, and when that begins shipping to customers, it’s possible Apple may continue offering the August Smart Lock in its stores.
Apple has also pulled the Belkin WeMo switch from its online store, suggesting it may be ceasing to offer several home-connected products that are not also offering HomeKit to avoid confusing its customers.
Apple sells quite a few HomeKit products in its retail stores and online, offering devices from Ecobee, Philips, Elgato, Lutron, and Schlage.

Apple Now Allowing Personal Pickup in Canada and Australia
As of today, Apple has launched an in-store pickup feature in Canada and Australia allowing customers in those countries to order and pay for devices online and pick them up in retail Apple Stores. Personal Pickup has long been available in the United States, but this is the first time it’s expanded to additional countries.
MacRumors reported on the possible expansion of Personal Pickup in early November after receiving word Apple was training retail employees in Australia, France, Canada, the UK, and other countries. While Personal Pickup has currently only expanded to Canada and Australia it may roll out to additional countries in the near future.

Personal Pickup is available for a number of Apple products, from Macs and Apple TVs to the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. When an order is placed for an in-stock item for Personal Pickup, Apple employees get it ready to go and then send an email to a customer whenever it’s ready. Out of stock items are able to be shipped to a store for Personal Pickup.
This week has been big for both Australia and Canada. Along with the availability of Personal Pickup, both Canada and Australia have also gained Apple Pay through a partnership with American Express. Apple Pay is available in Canada as of today and will be available in Australia on Thursday.

Apple Responds to Developers Regarding Expired Mac App Store Security Certificates
Last week some users and developers experienced an issue that displayed a “damaged” error when attempting to open select apps from the Mac App Store, including popular apps like 1Password, Tweetbot and Byword. Today, Apple has sent an email to developers explaining what happened and how to fix their apps.

In the email, which developer Donald Southard Jr. shared on Twitter, Apple explains that the company issued a new security certificate for the Mac App Store in September in anticipation of the expiration of the old certificate. The new certificate used a stronger SHA-2 hashing algorithm instead of the old SHA-1 algorithm. Hashing algorithms are used by certificate authorities to sign security certificates.
However, two issues caused users to experience errors when starting up apps. The first issue, according to Apple, is that there was a caching issue with the Mac App Store that required users to restart their computers and re-authenticate with the Mac App Store to clear out the old cache. Apple says it’s working on a fix for this in an upcoming OS X update. The other issue is that some apps were running an older version of OpenSSL that didn’t support SHA-2. Apple says it replaced the SHA-2 certificate with a new SHA-1 certificate last Thursday night.
Finally, Apple says that “most of the issues are now resolved”, but that some apps might still experience problems if the apps make “incorrect assumptions” about the Mac App Store’s security certificates. Apple asks developers to make sure their code adheres to the Receipt Validation Programming Guide and to resubmit apps for expedited review if necessary. The AppleCare support team has also been briefed with the latest troubleshooting information for users.

ISIS’ online presence reportedly includes a 24-hour ‘help desk’
The terrorist group known as ISIS has ramped up its online outreach efforts in a big way over the past year, including establishing a 24-hour help desk that teaches members how to use encryption and other secure communications tactics, NBC News reports. News of the help desk comes from Dr. Aaron Brantly, a cyber fellow at the Combating Terrorism Center with the US Military Academy at West Point. According to Brantly, ISIS has “developed a series of different platforms in which they can train one another on digital security to avoid intelligence and law enforcement agencies for the explicit purpose of recruitment, propaganda and operational planning.”

Commerce Department gets its first ever Chief Data Scientist
Want proof that US officials are taking data seriously? Just look at the Commerce Department. It’s following in the White House’s footsteps by hiring its first ever Chief Data Scientist, Jeff Chen. He’ll make sure that the department is making the most of data across the many, many fields it covers: he could improve predictions for severe weather, for example, or help modernize the US’ creaky patent system. Chen certainly has the experience to back it up, having worked with everyone from NASA to the White House’s own Office of Science and Technology Policy. There’s only so much he can do in the new role, but it won’t be surprising if he gets the wheels of government turning considerably faster.

Google Maps ready to help Thanksgiving week
Google has been busy making some improvements and adding new features to Google Maps recently, like the ability to check out special store hours during the holiday season or find cheap gas or a detour. Combining Google Maps with data mined by the search giant’s computers from the last three years, Google is offering up some tips and insights for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
First off, Google suggests that travelers may want to hit the road on Tuesday instead of waiting until Wednesday. It may not be much of an improvement, but Google’s data shows Tuesday is the second worst travel day topped only by Wednesday. That same data suggests return trips should be scheduled for Sunday instead of Saturday. Google does note that Wednesday failed to top the list as worst travel day in Boston, Honolulu, Providence and San Francisco.
Once travelers arrive at their destinations, Google’s search history data shows a couple trends that pop up during the holidays. On Thanksgiving Day itself, Maps users number one search term is “buffet restaurants” although some places like Houston leaned to “doughnut shops.” Another peculiarity that surfaced is the leading search term of “beauty salons” that comes up in Miami on Thanksgiving.
After making it through the big day itself, Americans face what has become another big day – Black Friday. As expected, search terms are dominated by people looking for places like “electronics store” or “outlet mall.” However, it looks like New York residents start thinking about tattoo shops while west coast residents look for hookah bars. Go figure.
Unfortunately, Google has not yet figured out a way to make it easier to squeeze into your clothes after the dust settles.

Truecaller incorporates FCC complaint data to beef up service
As more people come to rely more heavily on their smartphones, even for something like making or receiving an actual phone call, and increasingly abandon landlines, they are also becoming more susceptible to receiving spam and robocalls on their mobile devices. Besides the annoyance, billions of dollars have been lost to scammers. Truecaller has been trying to help with that by giving users a tool to discover who is calling them and block unwanted calls. Now, they are beefing up their service by pulling in data from the FCC complaint database that gets updated on a weekly basis.
The FCC received 215,000 complaints about automated calls in 2014. When combined with the 1.5 million new spam reports Truecaller receives each month, Truecaller says they have been able to expand the number of spam detections in the U.S. from 4 million to 8 million per month. Vice President of Growth and Partnerships for Truecaller, Tom Hsieh, says the new complaint data “gives us yet another way to empower consumers, and the results have been dramatic.”
Earlier this year the FCC released a statement saying they “encourage providers to offer these services” referring to do-not-disturb technologies and leveraging publicly available FCC data.
If you want to give Truecaller a try, you can use the download link below and you can read the press release from Truecaller below for more details about this upgrade to their service.
Free Smartphone App From Truecaller Harnesses FCC Complaint Data To Bolster Its Award Winning Spam Detection Services
With integration of FCC’s database, company now detects more than 2 million spam calls per week in the U.S.
SAN FRANCISCO, November 17, 2015 – With the escalating number of spam and telemarketing calls in the US, Truecaller, a mobile app that gives users the power to know who is contacting them and the ability to block unwanted calls and messages, today announces a major upgrade in its US spam blocking and Caller ID services by integrating weekly complaint data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
According to the FCC, unwanted spam calls and texts are the number one consumer complaint in America. In 2014, the agency received 215,000 complaints about automated calls, with more than 208,000 complaints filed in 2013.
With 200 million users worldwide, Truecaller has more than 200 million spam numbers in its database. Truecaller has been expanding its footprint in the US and receives over 1.5 million new spam reports per month. Since its integration with the FCC’s robocall and telemarketing complaint database, Truecaller has doubled the number of spam detections in the US from 4 million to 8 million every month.
“The FCC’s public complaint data gives us yet another way to empower consumers, and the results have been dramatic,” said Tom Hsieh, Vice President of Growth and Partnerships, who presented at the FCC workshop on robocalls this past September. “Now anyone can stay protected with the most up to date information on telemarketers and robocallers, and make more educated decisions on what calls to take and which ones to avoid altogether.”
According to a Truecaller / Nielsen study in 2014, unwanted calls proved to be more than simple annoyances, with more than 17.6M Americans claiming to have lost money in a phone fraud or scam, losing an estimated $8.6B, with an average amount lost of $488.80 per victim. Incidences include IRS Agent Scam, Jamaican Lottery Scam, One Ring Phone Scam, Tech Support Scams, and countless others.
In an FCC release from October 2015, Alison Kutler, chief of the FCC’s Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau, which manages consumer complaints, said, “Consumers want and deserve effective tools to empower them to choose the calls and texts they receive. This data will help improve do-not-disturb technologies so they can provide the best service for consumers. As we encourage providers to offer these services, and as the Commission recently made clear that there are no legal barriers to doing so, we continue to look for ways to help facilitate important consumer tools.”
This latest effort represents the next step in Truecaller’s broader vision to reimagine the mobile calling experience for more open, trusted and authentic communications.
Truecaller can be downloaded for free on popular platforms including Android, iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Tizen and Nokia feature phones. Truedialer is available for free on Android andWindows Phone, and Truemessenger is available for free on Android.
