UK to create cybersecurity forces to fight off ISIS hackers
The UK is boosting its cybersecurity efforts after government officials learned that ISIS is planning to launch cyber attacks on various infrastructures, such as hospitals, banks and air traffic control systems. According to Reuters, the nation plans to build “elite cyber offensive forces” to fight off hackers, and it’s pouring a lot of money into the project to make it happen. Chancellor George Osborne has revealed that the UK is doubling its public spending on cybersecurity to £1.9 billion ($2.9 billion) per year until 2020. But that’s not all: the British government is building its own DARPA for cybersecurity, as well. It will take £165 million ($250 million) from the total funding to invest in projects and startups with innovative ideas. As Forbes notes, teaming up with and funding private companies is exactly how DARPA works, except the American agency also funds robotics and other types of military technologies.

Renderings Show Off Apple’s New Retail Store Alongside Chicago River
The Chicago Tribune has obtained an exclusive first look at Apple’s planned new flagship store in Chicago, which will be placed alongside the Chicago River. The new store will “echo” legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie Style homes, which Wright pioneered near the city.

The store will be located near the historic Michigan Bridge and include a “grand flight of stairs” that will go from street-level to a walkway alongside the Chicago River’s north bank. On the street-level side, the store will have an entry pavilion that’s 14-feet high. Pedestrians entering from N. Michigan Avenue will have to proceed downward onto the sales floor via stairs or an elevator.
The new flagship will have glass walls with a thin, high-strength carbon fiber roof. The 20,000 square-foot store will replace a vacant food court, and an Apple spokesman confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that it wants to start construction next year. The Tribune notes that the new store could be a “boon for the neighborhood”, shifting retail focus on Michigan Avenue further south and encouraging development of future architectural projects in the area.

The store is being headed by Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, Apple’s frequent architectural partner and the firm in charge of its new Cupertino headquarters. Apple is scheduled to present a proposal on the new store to the Chicago Plan Commission on Thursday, but a department spokesman told the Tribune that the presentation is a formality as the planning department has already approved the proposal. Additionally, Apple already has a deal in place with Zeller Realty Group, the owner of the territory the new Apple Store will reside on.
Apple’s current flagship store in Chicago is the four-story North Michigan Avenue store, which it has occupied since 2003. According to the Tribune, the new flagship could give Apple greater visibility in the area and higher sales. More renderings of the new store can be seen at the Chicago Tribune’s website.

Apps on Google Play can get pretty cheap, but Google is now allowing apps to get even cheaper in some regions. In 17 countries, the minimum Android app price is being dropped after a successful pilot in India whose minimum price is being dropped to 10 Indian Rupees or about 15 cents. Bargain.

Google Photos is getting updated with feature to help you clear backed-up photos
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
I’ve always found it interesting that cloud-based services were always happy to back up your photos and other junk, but never offered to get rid of the local copy when it was done doing that, particularly on mobile devices. Well, Google Photos now has that functionality after an update today. The Photos app will now have a “Free Up Space” button that will allow you to bulk delete photos that have already been synced with your account. As a nice related feature, Google Photos will now alert users when their device is nearing their storage limit.
There’s also a small number of other features that people will find useful, such as deleting photos from SD card and downgrading photos from Original quality to High quality after they’ve been uploaded. Apart from the “Free Up Space” feature, I don’t think this update will affect my life that much, but I’m sure there are lots of Photos power-users out there who will appreciate the update. As always, don’t freak out if you don’t have the update available yet – it could take a few days for the update to become available for your device.

Google lowers minimum app prices in 17 countries
To many people around the globe, 99-cent apps might still be too expensive. In an effort to reach more people worldwide, Google has lowered the minimum app price in the Play Store for 17 countries, after a successful pilot in India earlier this year. Prices vary depending on location: Indians enjoy the lowest minimum price of 10 Indian Rupees (15 cents), while folks in Turkey and Ukraine will be able to buy the cheapest apps for 21 cents each. Poland is getting the smallest price cut of them all, but the minimum amount still costs less than half a dollar at 45 cents. You can find the full price list below the fold with their US dollar conversations. If you’re a developer willing to sell at a lower price, you can adjust your apps’ pricing scheme under “Pricing & Distribution” or “In-app Products” in Google Play’s Developer Console.

YouTube Kids entertains children outside of the US
Some seven months after launching, YouTube Kids is expanding outside of America. Folks living in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom can access the family friendly section of Google’s video wing. What’s more, Mountain View says that the apps’ been downloaded over 10 million times to date and that apparently more time has been spent watching “Wheels on the Bus” than “Gagnam Style.” Mind you, the “Wheels on the Bus” video is almost an hour long versus just over four minutes for PSY’s smash hit. Oh, and Google says to keep an eye out for upcoming holiday specials on the app over the next few weeks.

Google Chrome surpasses 800 million monthly mobile users
As you may or may not know, Google is in the midst of holding its annual 2-day Chrome Developer Summit in California. During the conference’s opening ceremony this morning, the search engine giant revealed that the mobile version of its Chrome browser is currently being used by more than 800 million people each month, which is pretty impressive seeing as this time last year, the amount of Chrome mobile users was only estimated to be approximately 400 million — so in the last twelve months alone, it has doubled its user base. By the end of Q1 2016, Google expects there to be over one billion users using the service.
