Wileyfox Swift and Storm review: Two cheap UK phones, one worth buying
There are two ways you can go about buying a new smartphone: Either you spread the cost over a year or two with a carrier contract, or purchase the thing outright. When you’re finally done paying it off, a subsidised handset often ends up costing more than it’s worth. However, considering the price of new iPhones, Samsung flagships and peers, that can still be preferable to emptying your bank account in one fell swoop. Thankfully, companies big and small are addressing this conundrum with phones that offer the kind of specs and user experience customers want at prices they’re happy to pay upfront. Despite an abundance of competition in contract-free handsets already, new British brand Wileyfox is one such company, and it’s hoping to make its mark in the UK with the affordable £129 Swift and higher-end £199 Storm. Londoners will soon be able to share an Uber with strangers
If you’re willing to share an Uber with a stranger, travelling across London could soon be a little bit cheaper. The company is launching UberPool this Friday (December 4th) at 4pm, starting with a small patch in the centre of the city — it stretches between Highbury in the North, Wapping in the East, Brixton in the South and Shepherd’s Bush in the West. Sharing a ride will, the company claims, make your fare 25 percent cheaper than if you had travelled with UberX, the company’s next best option. You simply open the app, choose the UberPool icon and your destination; it’ll then ask how many seats you need (for now, two is the limit) and give a final fare. If you’re the driver’s second stop, Uber will tell you the name of your fellow traveller immediately, otherwise you’ll get a notification mid-journey.

Lenovo Vibe smartphones are here to stay

As part of Lenovo’s major ongoing restructure, the company has recently stated that it will dissolve its mobile division and fold it into Motorola. Another report also suggested that Lenovo would be replacing its Vibe series of smartphones and possibly its Lemon series too in order to simplify its product portfolio. However, Lenovo has since dismissed the latter point and insists that its Vibe brand will be sticking around.
“Vibe remains an important brand in the Lenovo mobile family … We plan to continue to expand and grow the franchise in select markets around the world.” – Lenovo spokesperson
So what’s going on? Well, we know that Lenovo is reorganizing its smartphone business under the legal Motorola entity. The company has also stated that it will rely on Motorola to design, develop and manufacture smartphone products. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that all Lenovo branded smartphones will disappear, and we can probably expect Lenovo to keep some of its brands around in regions where they are proving popular. What we don’t know is how these changes will affect the design of Lenovo’s future handsets.

The original report had suggested that Lenovo would axe some of its own brands to make room for Motorola’s portfolio, so as not to create conflicts across the various market segments. Case in point, the Lenovo Vibe and Moto G/X ranges both target the mid-tier of the market. However, the two names currently see different levels of success around the globe, take Asia verses the US for example. The key to Lenovo’s statement is “select markets.”
Both the Vive and Moto brands will continue to be sold and developed, at least in the near future, despite all being integrated under a single organization.
OPPO R7s heading to Europe on December 1st

The OPPO R7s was officially announced in mid-October and will be making its way to European consumers on December 1st.
The OPPO R7s aims to once again bridge the gap between the mid and high-ends of the market, with some reasonable hardware at a quite competitive price. The smartphone features a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, 32GB of internal storage with microSD card support, a 13 megapixel rear camera, 8 megapixel front camera, and a 3,070 mAh battery. There’s a mid-range Snapdragon 615 processor paired up with 4GB of RAM to power the R7s.
The R7s comes with OPPO’s own Flash Charging technology, which allows you to go from 0% to 90% battery in just 50 minutes. The smartphone’s rear camera also features Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) for fast picture focusing and better image stabilization.

Swatch’s payments watch is coming to the US
Swatch has announced that the mobile payments watch that it’s sending to China will also make its way over here. The watchmaker has teamed up with Visa in order to offer the Swatch Bellamy in the US, Brazil and Switzerland. It’s the third entry on that list that’s the most eyebrow-raising, since Swatch CEO Nick Hayek very recently criticized his home nation’s own banks for being slow to embrace new payments tech. It looks as if Visa has stepped in to make its relations in Switzerland look fusty and slow by comparison.

BlackBerry is leaving Pakistan over demands for backdoor access
BlackBerry has announced it’s formally shutting down shop in Pakistan over demands from the country’s Telecommunications Authority that backdoor access be granted to the company’s encrypted services. Back in July, local carriers were ordered to shut off BlackBerry Enterprise Service from the end of November, because “security reasons.” While the order has been pushed back to the end of the year, Pakistan’s government isn’t budging, leaving BlackBerry no other option but to abandon the country. As the company explains, “remaining in Pakistan would have meant forfeiting our commitment to protect our users’ privacy. That is a compromise we are not willing to make.”

Amazon’s Prime Air project is alive and well, has a new drone

Hopefully you’re managing to snag yourself a few final bargains this Cyber Monday, if you’re not already burnt out after Black Friday. Given all this consumer madness, it’s fitting that Amazon has chosen this week to deliver us an update about its ‘Prime Air’ project. Remember those flying package delivery drones from a couple of years ago that seemed like something out of science fiction?
The latest update contains a small selection of new pictures and a video, which features Amazon’s latest high-profile signing for its programming line-up – Jeremy Clarkson. There’s a run down through how the system works, along with a good look at Amazon’s new drone design.
As well as the old quad-coper design, Amazon has a new drone that looks something like a cross between a hovercraft and a traditional aeroplane. The new model is able to move both vertically and then horizontally, allowing for easy landings and take-offs as well as faster, more efficient flight. This design can reach a height of 400 feet, can fly at over 55 miles per hour and can cover 15 miles.

The drone also seems to feature some on-board processor technology and specialized software that can be used to avoid obstacles on-route and scan the landing spot for an ideal location to drop off your package. The plan is for Amazon to run a fleet of drones in different shapes and sizes to cater for different environments.
Amazon says that putting Prime Air into service is still going to take some time, but the company plans to deploy once it has the necessary regulatory support. So there still a while to wait until Amazon drone deliveries are a thing, but one day this technology be as familiar as the postman.
Gates, Zuckerberg and Bezos invest in huge clean energy fund
After announcing the Mission Innovation program to convince nations to double their clean energy investment budgets, Bill Gates has launched another massive initiative at the United Nations Climate Change conference in Paris. The Breakthrough Energy Coalition is backed by a who’s who of tech leaders, including Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Jack Ma and Richard Branson. The idea is to develop new green technology that will increase the world’s energy output — especially in poor countries — without contributing to global warming. Such tech, however, poses a risk that regular investors might shy away from. “We need the basic research, but we need to pair that with people who are willing to fund high-risk, breakthrough energy companies,” said Gates.
