Goodbye, EverythingMe launcher – popular app shutting down despite popularity

EverythingMe Launcher Hands On

Launchers are a tricky business, which is why we are always interested in those developers who decide to go out of the norm and really get creative with their apps. And then we have a few that get pretty popular, which makes them extra special. But popularity doesn’t always translate to revenue, a lesson many of us have to learn the bad way.

Today we are saying goodbye to one of our favorite launchers (literally; we listed it in our top launchers) – EverythingMe. The team has announced the app is shutting down and support will end in the coming days. Te reason? Money.

What made this UI replacement app special was that it was the first to offer a contextual experience that evolved along with your daily routine. The user would get recommended apps and services depending on the time of the day, as well as the location.

Their monetization system worked very similarly to their UI, which seems to be at least one of the causes of the app’s demise. Profits come from advertising, which is also contextual. EverythingMe will recommend apps and services of different types, depending on the time and location.

The company is not being very clear about all the details, but it seems that despite breaking industry expectations in popularity, the team couldn’t transform this into money when growing in emerging markets. It has been over a year since the global launch, so we believe they really have put enough time and consideration into this decision.

everythingme-team

All we can say is that we tip our hats to the EverythingMe team, which has created one of the best third-party launchers we have seen. It does seem like the project is completely dead, but keep in mind that the app will continue in your phone if you already have it. There just won’t be any support for it. That is, unless they decide to open the source code and the community takes over (go bug them about it!).

But tell us – which is your favorite launcher? Will you miss EverythingMe?

Scientists create quantum entanglement at room temperature

Quantum entanglement in action

Quantum entanglement, where two particles are inextricably linked, is a real thing. However, creating that odd behavior has been extremely difficult so far — you have to cool things down to near absolute zero to pull it off on a significant scale. Or rather, you did. Researchers have successfully produced macro-scale quantum entanglement at room temperature through the one-two combo of an infrared laser (which aligned magnetic states) and electromagnetic pulses (for the actual entanglement). The experiment only included enough electrons and nuclei to fill the space of a blood cell, but that still amounts to linking “thousands” of particles.

Verizon makes travelling for Thanksgiving easier with free gifts starting Nov. 25

Travelling for the Thanksgiving holiday can be a nightmare. The day before and the days after are fraught with massive amounts of travellers, terrible weather, delays, traffic and crowded airports.

Verizon is creating a new holiday called “Thanksgetting.” Thanksgetting is the day before Thanksgiving and in hopes of making travelling just a little easier, Verizon is making it available to all mobile customers. Hopefully this will help travellers stay in a better mood if they’re just not having it with crowds and delays.

“Verizon worked with a number of top partners to create Thanksgetting, which is centered around a suite of offers that will help keep travel boredom at bay. Best of all, these offers are available to anyone who visits vzw.com/thanksgetting between Thursday, November 19 and Wednesday, November 25, regardless of whether or not they’re a Verizon customer.”

Verizon is helping consumers ease holiday travel with:

  • Movies, TV shows, music, e-books and apps from Amazon
  • A $5 gift certificate to iTunes from Apple
  • A 30-day Pandora One trial for new subscribers
  • A $20 credit toward a ride on Thanksgetting Day (November 25) from Lyft
  • Airport Wi-Fi from Boingo
  • In-flight Wi-Fi from Gogo
  • MyRewards+ points from Verizon Fios

In addition to these special offers, Verizon does have an extra gigabyte of data that can be used now and another gigabyte for the next bill cycle. This is especially useful for Verizon customers who get delayed on their flights or who are stuck in traffic.

If you want to make your journey a little easier, whether you’re an AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon cusomter, go to vzw.com/thanksgetting to see what Verizon has to offer. Thanks Verizon! Happy Thanksgiving to you too.

Apple’s Fifth Retail Store in Beijing Opens November 28

Apple has announced that its fifth retail store in Beijing, and 27th in China, opens Saturday, November 28 at 10 AM local time. The store will be located in the new Chaoyang Joy City shopping mall at 101 Chaoyang North Road in Beijing’s city proper Chaoyang District.

The new store will be open 10 AM-10 PM local time everyday and offer traditional Apple Store services, including the Genius Bar, Workshops, JointVenture, events and seminars. Apple’s four other retail stores in Beijing are located at China Central Mall, Sanlitun, Wangfujing and Xidan Joy City.

Apple has opened more than seven new retail stores in China this year, including locations in Chongqing, Dalian, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Nanjing and Tianjin. The company is committed to expanding its footprint in China, an increasingly important market, under the leadership of retail chief Angela Ahrendts.

Apple opened a new store in Chengdu, China on November 21, less than a month after opening a new Dalian, China store on October 24.

A ‘Dragon Quest’ game is coming to PCs through Steam

'Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below'

At long last, you can get a Dragon Quest game on Steam… if not quite the role-playing game you might be hoping for. Square Enix has revealed that Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree’s Woe and the Blight Below is coming to Windows as a Steam download on December 3rd. The $60 title (already available on the PS3 and PS4) is really a slash-em-up that happens to be set in the DQ universe more than anything else — think Dynasty Warriors with slimes. Still, this is heartening news. Heroes was well-received when it hit consoles earlier this year, and its Windows launch raises hope that other follow-ups in the series (if not necessarily the much-hyped Dragon Quest XI) could one day be just a click away.

For those who may be out of the loop, the Fitbit Charge is a fitness tracking wearable that monitors your activity, steps, distance traveled, calories burned, sleep, stairs climbed and more. And the bracelet does have a smart touch, as it offers notifications for calls, texts and other things. It even features GPS, so it doesn’t need much help from your smartphone.

fitbit-charge-2

The Fitbit Charge Wireless Activity Wristband usually goes for $129.99, so this is a pretty good deal to take advantage of for the holidays. It will make a great gift for the activity buff. In fact, we did include it in the list of our top Android gifts under $200, so you know this is a device we can vouch for.

Just head over to Amazon’s page to take advantage of this deal. The only point I would like to note is that you should act fast. We never know how long these lower prices will stick around, or when they will return, after that. Is anyone signing up?

HTC cyber week deals: discounts on Nexus 9, One M9, RE camera and more

htc one m9 review aa (27 of 34)

I can already taste Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals (as well as the turkey). The internet is filling up with discount announcements (we have listed our favorites here) and now it’s HTC‘s turn. What will they have for us during America’s shopping hysteria?

best black friday dealsSee also: Black Friday 2015 – best deals (Updated!)20

The Taiwanese manufacturer has just announced its cyber week deals and they are looking quite enticing! There are discounts on a phone, tablet, camera and even accessories. Here are the details!

  • 11/25-11/27: 40% off Nexus 9 (free Logitech keyboard for first 500 32GB/LTE units sold.
  • 11/27-11/29: 40% off all accessories
  • 11/29-12/2: 60% off RE Camera (free protection pack)
  • 11/29-12/2: 40% off HTC One M9

Nexus 9-19

I must say these deals are actually quite tempting. It’s hard to find 40%-60% discounts on these types of electronics (unless you are signing a service contract).

HTC is in a bit of a tight spot after disappointing One M9 sales, so they may be trying extra hard to capitalize on this yearly event. They failed to really impress the public with that smartphone, but it happens to be a pretty decent device… especially at 40% off!

HTC RE-4

Reviews:

The Nexus 9 also continues to be a hell of a tablet, and that RE can take some sweet handheld videos and images. In fact, I think I might be signing up for that cam! Are you taking advantage of any of these deals? Hit the comments and let us know!

FanDuel warned staff against winning too often on rival sites

DraftKings Inc. And FanDuel Inc. Applications As Ad Spending Increases

DraftKings and FanDuel may have bitten off more than they can chew when they sued New York to keep their daily fantasy sports games alive in the state. FanDuel’s corporate policies from before it self-regulated have been entered into evidence, and some of them only seem to confirm worries about staff abusing their power while playing on rival sites. For a start, the site told workers to “never be among the top five” players on any daily fantasy site, or the top 10 on the tracking site RotoGrinders. They also couldn’t have disproportionate numbers of entries in tournaments, and they were supposed to avoid using information on player lineups whenever possible. In other words, don’t be too successful — we don’t want you raising suspicions that the games might be rigged.
