Dell is the latest PC maker with a gaping security flaw
Lenovo and Samsung might not be the only big Windows PC makers pre-installing software that compromises your security. Computer buyers have discovered that Dell is shipping at least some PCs (such as the new XPS 15) with a self-signed security certificate that’s the same on every system. If intruders get a raw copy of the certificate’s private key, which isn’t hard, they have an easy way to attack every PC shipping with this code. The kicker? This is much like Lenovo’s Superfish exploit, only written by the hardware vendor itself — Dell had plenty of time to learn from its rival’s mistake.

Troublesome details arise about ‘Clock Kid’ Ahmed’s arrest
The attorney for Ahmed Mohamed revealed new details about the September events in Texas in a letter sent to both school and city officials in Irving, Texas. If you’ll recall, Ahmed is the 14-year-old boy who was arrested under suspicions of creating a “hoax bomb,” but the device was nothing more than a clock. Early accounts of the events that day detailed one teacher seeing the homemade gadget and thinking nothing of it before a second told him that it resembled a bomb. In a letter of demand, Mohamed’s lawyer alleges that school officials never really thought that the clock was an explosive device, as the second teacher didn’t initially treat the gadget like she thought it was dangerous. She did escort Ahmed to the office, where the letter alleges that five police officers, the principal and the assistant principal performed an “interrogation.” During that time, he was allegedly not permitted to contact his parents and was forced to sign a letter of confession under the threat of expulsion. Eventually, authorities decided not to charge him, but his family says the damage was done.
Flying a drone is easier when the battery doesn’t die right away
It just kept going until it was barely a speck in the sky. I was sure I had lost the Bebop 2 review unit Parrot had sent Engadget. The fact that the company’s latest mid-level drone flies longer and faster than its predecessor popped into my mind along side the concern that it would just keep going and going. The onboard 14-megapixel 1080p camera would capture the entire flight. Of course that would be a moot point if it continued on its westward path and eventually lost power and splashed down in the Pacific. I squinted as the sun made it difficult to see the Bebop finally take a quick right turn along its pre-programmed path around San Francisco’s Sutro Tower. My concern wasn’t completely unfounded: Minutes earlier I had difficulty with the drone’s WiFI connection with my phone after powering up. But at the end of the day, the Bebop 2 delivers on its extended battery life and speed even if it takes time to get it up in the air. Slideshow-342649

HP teams up with another giant watchmaker on smart wristwear
HP isn’t done reviving its smartwatch partnerships just because it’s helping Movado — far from it. The tech pioneer has unveiled a smartwatch deal with Titan, the fifth-largest watchmaker in the world and a powerhouse in its native India. The two aren’t saying much about what their new wearable entails beyond a design that’s “responsive, but not intrusive” (what does that even mean?) and its support for both Android and iOS. However, it’s safe to say that HP is doing most of the heavy lifting. Like with other Engineered by HP smartwatches, it’s supplying the underlying hardware and software while the watch brand focuses mostly on design and manufacturing.

Samsung Pay can now be used with Chase Bank credit and debit cards
Samsung Pay is already off to a great start. Not only has it been achieving some impressive numbers in the US and South Korea, it’s one of the easiest and most widely-accepted mobile payment services out there thanks to its use of both NFC and MST technologies. Since launch, Samsung has been promising its users that more credit and debit cards would get support for Samsung Pay over the coming months, and it looks like that’s proving true today. Samsung has just announced that eight new credit and debit card issuers have been added to Samsung Pay.
Chase Visa is the most notable among the list, joining American Express, Bank of America, Citi Bank, U.S. Bank and Synchrony Financial as viable options for folks who want to use Samsung’s new payment method. In addition, Samsung Pay now supports credit and debit cards from these Mastercard issuers: Citizens Equity First Credit Union, Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union, Security Service Federal Credit Union, State Employees’ Credit Union, SunTrust and Virginia Credit Union. Navy Federal Credit Union Visa credit and debit cards are now supported, too.

The company is also offering a pretty decent promotion for users who have yet to sign up for the payment service. Starting Today Samsung Pay Supports Chase Visa Credit and Debit Cards and New MasterCard Issuers

Futurama is returning as a mobile game
Sometimes television shows perish too soon – take Futurama for instance. The Fox show managed to earn six Emmys (along with 12 total Emmy nominations), as well as seven Annie awards and countless others. If you’ve been dying to get more Futurama in your life, we have some good news for you. Fox Digital Entertainment has just signed an agreement with video game developer Wooga to create a new Futurama-themed game for mobile devices.
The game will be called Futurama: Game of Drones, and will send players on a journey with the Planet Express crew as they wage in a trade war agains MomCo. Wooga explains:
The game takes players on a journey with the Planet Express crew as they fight a desperately imbalanced trade war against longtime shipping rival MomCo. While delivering dangerous cargo to hazardous locations under ill-advised circumstances, players connect groups of delivery drones to solve an array of fiendish puzzles as they venture into iconic environments from the FUTURAMA universe.
The Wooga team isn’t the only one working on the new title, though. The new game’s original storyline is written by Dave Grossman, who also wrote Secret of Monkey Island and Telltale Games’ The Wolf Among Us. Grossman will also be working with former Futurama producer Patric Verrone, as well as Jonathon Myers who worked on Game of Thrones: Ascent.
There’s no word on an exact release date quite yet, but we’ll update you as we learn more.
EE enters fray over advertising on mobile devices
U.K. wireless carrier EE has announced they are going to start looking at technology that would give end users more control over the advertising that shows up on their smartphones, including going so far as blocking some in-app advertising. A move to start limiting or blocking advertising, especially if adopted by other carriers, could have a huge impact on the $3B USD mobile advertising market in the U.K.
EE CEO Olaf Swantee said in an interview on the matter,
“We think it’s important that, over time, customers start to be offered more choice and control over the level and intensity of ads on mobile. For EE, this is not about ad blocking, but about starting an important debate around customer choice, controls and the level of ads customers receive.”
Blocking advertising is not a new concept, though usually it is a step that customers have to initiate using a variety of tools and methods. EE’s decision to take a look at what could be done to help customers control the advertising they are exposed to moves the discussion up a level. Digicel, a Caribbean wireless operator, has already taken steps in this direction and has announced plans to install network software to block virtually all advertising. That is, until they can exact a share of the revenue pie in a trade to let the advertising through. EE’s move seems to be more focused on helping customers achieve a better user experience and perhaps encourage better behavior on the part of advertisers and developers.
