Netflix is bringing back ‘Lost in Space’

Comic-Con International 2015 - "Lost In Space" Press Room

Netflix is known for its quality original programming. But every now and then it can’t help but pick some low-hanging fruit like rebooting a classic series. The streaming service has just penned a deal to remake 1960s classic Lost in Space. Originally set in a futuristic and completely inaccurate 1997, it followed a family who tried to colonize deep space and got lost when their navigation equipment was sabotaged. The program ended after a three-season run in 1968 and since then, others have tried to reanimate the franchise. The first was a movie adaptation in 1998 starring Matt LeBlanc (which says all you need to know about its quality). Then in 2004, a reboot pilot was shot but never aired. Rumours of a third attempt surfaced around a year ago, but fizzled out before anything was made. There’s been no mention of who will star in it or when it will air, but here’s hoping the Lost in Space Robot doesn’t flail its arms and robotically warn us: “Danger! Danger! Another failed sitcom rehash!”

Use your Apple Pencil to alter photos, make music and weigh things

The Apple Pencil is aimed at professional artists who want to use the iPad Pro as a fancy creation tablet, but Simon Gladman has other uses in mind for the stylus. He made three Swift apps that use the Apple Pencil in new ways: as a synthesizer powered by AudioKit, in an image-editing program and as part of an electronic scale. PencilSynth uses the Apple Pencil’s position on the iPad Pro to control the sound emitted, changing pitch and frequency as the Pencil travels at different angles across the screen. PencilController offers three image-filtering modes (hue/saturation, brightness/contrast and gamma/exposure), each controlled by holding one finger on the appropriate mode key and moving the Apple Pencil around a pivot point on the screen. PencilScale is the most “experimental” of Gladman’s projects, using the Apple Pencil as a stand for a series of weights sitting directly on top of a scale app. Gladman calls PencilScale “sensitive, but not terribly accurate.”

For Black Friday, OnePlus removes invite requirement to purchase its flagship

OnePlus_2_Black_friday_no_invites_banner_112315

Many criticize OnePlus for its invite system; however, during Black Friday and through the rest of the weekend, anyone will be able to purchase the OnePlus 2 without an invitation.

From November 27 to November 30, consumers can purchase the OnePlus 2 without having an invitation. OnePlus rarely provides opportunities like this, so if you’re in the market for the company’s flagship, now may be the best time.

OnePlus is also holding a series of other promotions and sales but didn’t specify exactly what just yet. You can expect to see a discounted price on the company’s OnePlus X (that may or may not be a smart purchase). But, of course, an invite might be required to purchase the handset.

T-Mobile stuffs stockings with unlimited 4G LTE data

t-mobile_concert

John Legere & Co. are at it once again. T-Mobile announced today that all Simple Choice customers are being given unlimited high-speed data at no extra charge. From December through March, customers will be able to use as much data as they’d like without T-Mobile slowing down data speeds. With the carrier’s network experiencing a 10% spike in usage around the holidays, T-Mobile wants data speeds to be the last thing their customers worry about.

Carriers usually target new customers during the months of November and December, but this promotion shows that T-Mobile is loyal to those that have given it growth in recent years. T-Mobile CEO John Legere proclaimed the following:

“We’ve had a fantastic year, and we’re going to spread that T-Mobile cheer by starting with the most important people first… our existing customers!”

So how do you know if you’re eligible for the carrier’s three months of unlimited high-speed data? By the end of today, November 23, you need to be an active Simple Choice customer.

Later this week, T-Mobile will be launching deals on phones and tablets for Black Friday with more to follow throughout December. Among them will be “special holiday gifts” for AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint customers. T-Mobile will target one carrier per week starting next week.

T-Mobile Amps the Holidays, Starts with Gift of Unlimited LTE for Existing Customers

Un-carrier announces Black Friday offers and kicks off ‘Un-carrier Unwrapped’ — four weeks in a row of surprise holiday gifts — starting with three full months of unlimited LTE data for T-Mobile customers — at no extra charge!

Bellevue, Washington — November 23, 2015 — T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) is kicking off the holidays in style with Un-carrier Unwrapped, a full month of holiday gift-giving, with one special gift coming each week. First up, the Un-carrier is giving the gift of unlimited high-speed data for your smartphone – for the next three months – to every single one of its postpaid Simple Choice customers. But in true T-Mobile fashion, we won’t stop there. T-Mobile is also delivering special holiday gifts to Sprint, AT&T and Verizon customers starting next week – one carrier per week. Plus, T-Mobile is serving up a banquet of holiday offers, including a free tablet, $0 down $0 per month on the Samsung Galaxy S6 32GB with JUMP! On Demand, and more.

“We’ve had a fantastic year, and we’re going to spread that T-Mobile cheer by starting with the most important people first… our existing customers! Now you get Unlimited LTE data on our blazing fast network for three full months as a gift from the Un-carrier to you,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “But that’s not all….we know that Verizon, AT&T and Sprint customers need some holiday cheer, too – so we’ve got presents coming for them. Just wait!”

The holidays are for connecting with family and friends. In fact, data usage on T-Mobile’s network jumps more than 10% in December. The last thing customers want to worry about is their data, so T-Mobile is taking that worry away. For the next three months, everybody – all active Simple Choice postpaid customers as of end of day November 23, including business customers – has Unlimited 4G LTE smartphone data once you use up all your data and your Data Stash.

And, as the Un-carrier so often does, they’ve done the hard work to keep things simple for customers. Simple Choice postpaid customers don’t have to do a thing to get their Unlimited LTE gift. On December 1, 2015, the special holiday gift will simply appear under the tree—that is, in their existing T-Mobile plan. Which is how gifts ought to be given, right? No stress. No hassles. And, they’ll keep that free Unlimited LTE smartphone data as long as they’re on the same T-Mobile plan with Binge On active until March 1, 2016.

More gifts – for the carriers’ mistreated customers – will start arriving next Monday, one carrier per week. Stay tuned.

Black Friday: Get a Tablet on Us – and a Whole Lot More
On top of this unprecedented customer gift, Black Friday is starting early at T-Mobile.  Beginning this Wednesday, November 25, you can get the popular Alcatel Onetouch Pixi™ 7” Android-powered™ 4G LTE tablet for $0 with any qualifying data plan at participating T-Mobile stores across the country and online. That’s right: $0 down, $0 payments; you pay only the sales tax.  With Binge On and a new tablet this holiday season, the entire family can watch all the holiday movies they want from top video services like Netflix, HBO, Hulu, and SlingTV and never worry about the Grinch gobbling up your high-speed data.

More Black Friday Deals:

  • T-Mobile customers can get the popular Samsung Galaxy S6 32GB for just $0 upfront and $0 per month with JUMP! On Demand with an eligible trade-in. $0 + $0 = $0.  You pay only the sales tax!

New rumour suggests Samsung Galaxy S7 could have a microSD slot

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

There are two very outspoken camps when it comes to storage on smartphones – some people are fine with dealing without a microSD slot, and those that vehemently want one. There are technical and subjective reasons for and against, but ultimately it’s the decision of the manufacturer to include one or not – Samsung has recently decided not to have a microSD slot in its recent flagship devices (at least, not in the international versions) and it’s been somewhat of a sore point for some loyal customers. Luckily for these people, a new rumour has surfaced that suggests the Samsung Galaxy S7 could have a microSD slot.

There are very few major manufacturers who still include a microSD slot in their flagships – LG being the biggest. The reasons for removing the slot are relatively clear – microSD cards can be bought from many other manufacturers, whereas buying in-built storage is much more profitable for smartphone manufacturers. It’s almost impossible to estimate whether Samsung’s decision cost them any sales, and we have no idea if this rumour is true or not, but it will be interesting to see what happens if it is true.

T-Mobile Announces ‘Un-carrier Unwrapped’ Promotion Offering Free LTE Data for All Customers for Three Months

T-Mobile today announced a new holiday promotion it’s calling “Un-carrier Unwrapped,” offering free unlimited LTE data for all of its Simple Choice customers for the next three months. All existing Simple Choice postpaid customers as of the end of the day on November 23 will get the unlimited data.

T-Mobile also plans to unveil additional “gifts” for the next month, with a new gift coming each week. The company is teasing a “special holiday gift” for Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon customers, with one gift per carrier per week.

Just wait!”

The unlimited data offering for Simple Choice customers will begin on December 1, 2015 and will last through March 1, 2016. Unlimited data will kick in once all existing data and Data Stash data has been used up. T-Mobile does require its Binge On video streaming service to be activated.

Unveiled earlier this month, Binge On provides T-Mobile customers with video streaming that does not eat into data plans, but it uses a data compression algorithm that streams video at a reduced 480p quality.

T-Mobile is also offering Black Friday deals on Samsung smartphones and discounting the UE Boom Bluetooth speaker by $100, dropping the price to $99.

Air Button adds handy shortcuts to NFC-enabled phones

The idea of customizable add-on buttons for smartphones isn’t exactly new. First we had Pressy (which was quickly cloned by Xiaomi and others), then the Dimple NFC button pad came along. So what’s next? Well, a Hong Kong startup thinks Dimple has space for improvement, which leads us to the Air Button. As the name suggests, this is yet another battery-less button that also makes use of — and without interfering with — NFC on the back of many Android devices, except it doesn’t have a memory limitation as the commands are stored in the app, so you can assign literally as many actions and apps as you want. For instance, you can set it to be an emergency button that toggles an audio alert, a flashlight and a phone call at the same time. Or you can have a sports mode button that starts playing music as well as launching your preferred fitness app. Slideshow-342729

FAA task force recommends drones over 250 grams be registered

Private companies including Google, GoPro, DJI, Amazon and others have submitted their recommendations to the FAA concerning drone registration. The group determined that all drones over 250 grams should be registered with the government with an owner’s name and street address. During the process there would also be an educational presentation about when and where to fly. The idea is that if one of these flying machines falls out of the sky and causes havoc, the authorities will be able to track down the owner. The task force recommended that registration process be electronic and have an API so new owners could register via the device’s app if the manufacturer adds that functionality. If you’re curious about the weight limit, the team of companies figured that anything 250 grams and lighter would be unlikely to cause the death or serious injury of a person on the ground. Of course these are only recommendations right now. The FAA still has to implement them. But it’s good to know it’s talking to the industry about the future of our skies.

You can now order Domino’s at the push of a button

Domino's launches The Limited Edition Easy Order button allowing pizza lovers to order their favourite pizza straight to their door at the touch of a button.

Domino’s launches The Limited Edition Easy Order button allowing pizza lovers to order their favourite pizza straight to their door at the touch of a button.

It’s interesting to be living in the future. A few years ago, I heard someone observe, “If I take this piece of glass and plastic out of my pocket and touch the glass in the right places, food will show up at the door.”

At the time, that was a fascinating bit of deconstruction that really underlined how cool it was to be alive in the 21st century. When you strip away the trappings of user interface, a lot of our technology just seems like pure magic. Now, Domino’s is taking that concept for a ride with their new on-touch pizza order button.

The move isn’t unprecedented. Amazon’s Dash buttons have certainly been successful. With these, users can instantly order a variety of pre-programmed household products with a single touch of a conveniently placed button. Domino’s has decided to bring this convenience to pizza delivery with an “Easy Order” button housed in a tiny cardboard box. Press it once, and the button will interact via Bluetooth with the Domino’s mobile app on your smartphone, an order will go out for your favorite pizza, and a charge will be applied to your card. Thirty minutes later: food.

It looks like only the UK is getting the actual, physical button this December, but a larger rollout is expected for February 2016. Honestly, we’d be extremely surprised if this didn’t hit US soil in the near future. To quote Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, “There’s only four things [Americans] do better than anyone else: music, movies, microcode (software), and high-speed pizza delivery.” While the other items on that list may be debatable, it’s no secret that America really loves pizza.

You might not be able to get ahold of the physical button, but Domino’s is putting a digital version on their mobile app, so you can dive into the instant delivery experience without waiting.

What do you think? Would you use an instant pizza delivery button? Let us know in the comments!

Android Studio 2.0 Preview focuses on improved deployment speeds and much more

Android Studio 2.0 Preview

Google is now giving developers the chance to preview tons of new features in the Android Studio 2.0 Preview, which was just released earlier today. The big news with this updated preview build is speed, thanks to two new features Google is introducing to Android Studio: Instant Run and GPU Profiler. Let’s take a look at what these new features offer.

First up is Instant Run, which will allow you to quickly see your changes running on your device or emulator. All new projects in Android Studio 2.0 will already have the feature enabled. If you already have an app in Android Studio, head to Settings/Preferences > Build > Execution > Deployment > Instant Run. Once you click Enable Instant Run, you’re all set up. From there, click Run as normal and Android Studio will perform normal compilation and install steps. Pressing Run again will deploy your changes directly into the running application.

For a more detailed look at the new Instant Run feature, check out the video below:

ASFeaturedPicDon’t miss: Android Studio tutorial for beginners4

Next up is GPU Profiler, which will make profiling your OpenGL ES Android code much easier. It will show you detail about the GL State and Commands, and will allow you to record your entire session and walk through the GL Framebuffer and Textures as your app is running OpenGL ES Code.

All of these new features are available now in the canary release channel, so Google is able to get your feedback. And since this initial release is a preview, Google suggests downloading and running an extra copy of Android Studio in parallel with your current version to make sure everything goes smoothly.
