Watson’s melt-in-your-mouth Moroccan almond curry

watson Moroccan Almond Curry

Cognitive Cooking with Chef Watson‘ is a collaboration between IBM and the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. As part of an ongoing series, we’ll be preparing one recipe from the book until we’ve made all of them. Wish us luck.

While it’s no great surprise to see Watson conjuring up unusual flavor blends, I was surprised to find such subdued in this Moroccan almond curry. On paper the recipe looked to be leaning toward bland, but its clever combination of all the elements worked. Traditional Moroccan lamb curries have intense flavors highlighted by garlic, onion, sometimes ginger, cinnamon and then sweetened with honey and dried apricot to balance lamb’s strong taste. Here, though, Watson prescribes small amounts of cardamom, cumin, turmeric. All told, the recipe is comprised of four separate parts, which you’ll later pile together. These include: the curry-braised lamb, a pea puree, green salad and plain old basmati rice. This is a great choice if you want to show off for guests, and yet it’s easy too: Because the meal is broken up in stages, much can be done the day before. It’s also mild enough that even the pickiest eater will find some joy in the dish. I fed it to a couple kids under ten and they both ate it up.Slideshow-336825

OnePlus X and Chromedroid: Podcast 038

AAPodcastfeatured_image038

With Josh sitting this one out, Jonathan leads while Andrew, Joe and Nirave spend a good amount of time saying really nice things about the OnePlus X and the Samsung Galaxy View. One is a decidedly mid-range smartphone with a fairly small display, the other is a decidedly mid-range tablet with a honkin’ big 18.4-inch display. We are split on our thoughts of a merger between Android and Chrome OS, opinions are all over the place, fueled by the basic uncertainty as to what exactly may or may not happen to Android and that other OS that Google has. Enjoy AA Podcast #038.

You might not have to update next-gen antivirus software

Cyber Attacks

Antivirus and malware protection programs are great, but they have a fatal flaw: they can only protect your PC from threats they know about. It’s not a terrible problem, but it gives attackers a brief window of opportunity to harm your computer every time they tweak their code. If a PC hasn’t nabbed the latest update to its protection suite, it’s vulnerable — but it doesn’t have to be that way. Researchers are using deep learning algorithms that can spot new malicious code naturally, without database updates.

Sound Guys Monthly – November 2015 – Jaybird X2 Giveaway

While October didn’t see many high-profile releases, it was anything but a slow month. We finally got a chance to review the new and improved Fugoo Sport XL, Beats announced its actual new product since the company’s acquisition by Apple, and as usual, a bunch of new and exciting Kickstarters were launched.

But we know why you’re really here: Congratulations to Tomás R from Venezuela, winner of the JBL Flip 3 from last month’s giveaway. Don’t worry, as always, we’ve got a brand new giveaway ready to go. First, let’s take a look at the highlights from last month.

The Beats Pill+ is the company’s first post-Apple acquisition product

beats-pill-plus-2

It’s been more than a year since audio giant Beats was acquired by tech giant Apple, but it was only last month that we caught the first glimpse of the company’s future. The Beats Pill+ certainly looks like it will sit well next to a MacBook, but the real question lies in whether or not it will sound any better than the Beats Pill 2.0.

Pure portable audio: no longer an oxymoron?

Astro3

Bluetooth has brought a new level of portability to music, but it comes with its fair share of tradeoffs, with a major one being the DSP used. This transforms the audio in the process, leaving listeners with something that sounds good but isn’t exactly what the engineers who mixed and mastered it intended. The Astro takes a new approach, using hardware instead, just like a “real” stereo.

Skybuds are wireless earbuds that are actually wireless

Skybuds[1]

Have you ever looked at a pair of wireless earbuds and noted how much wire is still involved? Sure, they don’t need to be plugged in, but we’ve got to be able to do better right? The Skybuds take a unique approach to solving this problem, and it’s going to be interesting to see how consumers respond to the idea.

Now the company has added even more to its already-packed lineup, including a tube amplifier for the home stereo set.

The Outlier is a new Kickstarter for a wooden wireless speaker

Outlier[1]

There’s always another way to make a speaker look more striking. We’ve seen Bluetooth speakers using wood before, but The Outlier adds another angle. Literally. The unique shape of the speaker may be the first thing that grabs your attention about this Kickstarter, but Recover, the company behind the campaign, intends to keep it with a variety of different bonuses and stretch goals.

Coolest of the month: Fugoo Sport XL

fugoo-sport-xl-sg-3

While Fugoo may not be a household name, we’ve been anxiously awaiting our chance to try the Fugoo XL since we first saw it announced at CES 2015. We had high expectations, and the speaker lives up to them.

Best bang for the buck: RHA S500i

rha-s500i-sg-5

After reviewing the RHA T10 and T20, we also had high expectations for the RHA S500i, but that wasn’t really fair. The sound doesn’t have the same neutral character as RHA’s higher-end offerings, but the S500i is a nice sounding pair of in-ears for $50.

The After Math: You’ve got to see this

What a week it’s been for entertainment news on the internet! Netflix’s first theatrical release, Beasts of No Nation, is racking up views; the NFL’s first live-streamed game, which debuted on Yahoo!, was reasonably well-received; and we learned something new about our friend, the chameleon. And now for some numbers.

Android Authority this week – November 1, 2015

nexus 6p vs nexus 5x aa (4 of 25)

Android fans, this week brought us a glimpse into the future of Android and Chrome OS, which will reportedly be merging starting next year. Android is coming to PCs and that means some big changes are afoot. In other news, Motorola launched the Droid Turbo 2, with its shatterproof screen, the Droid Maxx 2, and the international Moto X Force. OnePlus released its second device this year, the affordable, but stylish OnePlus X. And Samsung showed us once again that it thinks big, with the 18-inch Galaxy View.

Inside AA HQ

The Wall Street Journal report from last week about the lack of relevance that the dual-OS approach now has inside Google sparked a lot of interesting conversations about the future of Android. Google is planning to “fold” Chrome OS into its much more popular mobile operating system, and on face value, that seems like a sensible decision. Android is on 1.4 billion devices. The sheer size of this user base gives Android a real fighting chance against the stalwart Windows.

But having a chance is one thing, seizing it is another, and looking at how the Android ecosystem has yet to realize the potential of tablets, Google definitely has its work cut out for it. Competition isn’t sitting idle either. Microsoft might be dead in the water when it comes to phones, but Windows 10 is a powerful, extremely mature platform, that’s deeply entrenched into the market. It will be very interesting to see how Google approaches this problem, and we at Android Authority definitely look forward to extending our coverage to yet another class of devices.

This week we’re giving away a OnePlus X! This sleek and compact device can be yours – if luck is on your side – if you throw your name in the hat right here.
