Data-mined photos document 100 years of (forced) smiling
Here’s an odd fact: Turn-of-the-century photographers used to tell subjects to say “prunes” rather than “cheese,” so that they would smile less. By studying nearly 38,000 high-school yearbook photos taken since 1905, UC Berkeley researchers have shown just how much smiling, fashion and hairstyles have changed over the years. The goal was not just to track trends, but figure out how to apply modern data-mining techniques and machine learning to a much older medium: photographs. Their research could advance deep-learning algorithms for dating historical photos and help historians study how social norms change over time.

Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes could be the Star Wars mobile game you’ve been looking for
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
As if the hype for the new Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, couldn’t get any more unbearable, EA has just released yet another Star Wars themed game, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes. We first saw the game teased in August and the game is pretty much exactly what we expected based on that trailer from a few months ago. Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes takes the form of a RPG as you try to assemble your favourite roster of Star Wars characters and level them up and defeat increasingly challenging enemies.
You’ll be able to build your roster of heroes from 60 possible characters in the game – though this being EA, it would appear not all heroes will be available to you out of the box. In fact, EA is offering one free character to anyone who plays Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes today – if that’s supposed to be an incentive, I can’t want to see the in-app purchases. Cynism aside, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes actually looks like it could be a pretty fun game to get into if you have the time to invest into it (money optional we hope). Regardless, the game is free-to-play so even if the Force isn’t with this game, at least it will help tide us over till the movie’s release.

The hottest deal of the day that just went live on Amazon is for the Google Nexus 6. Last year’s Nexus smartphone is still a great option for anyone looking to stay up to date with the Android ecosystem. Featuring an expansive Quad HD AMOLED screen, a powerful processor, and premium build quality, the Nexus 6 is a great device, especially now that you can get it for a fraction of the price of its successor, the Nexus 6P.
Amazon is discounting all versions of the Nexus 6 by a healthy margin. Here’s the breakdown:
- Motorola Nexus 6, 32GB, Midnight Blue (U.S. Warranty) for $199.99 (down from $350)
- Motorola Nexus 6, 32GB, Cloud White (U.S. Warranty) for $199.99 (down from $350)
- Motorola Nexus 6, 64GB, Midnight Blue (U.S. Warranty) for $259.99 (down from $400)
- Motorola Nexus 6, 64GB, Cloud White (U.S. Warranty) for $259.99 (down from $400)
Update: The Nexus 5X is also discounted by $80 on Amazon today.
If you’re looking for something smaller, or perhaps just flashier, Amazon also has the excellent Samsung Galaxy S6 (32GB) down to just $400. This is the US version of Samsung’s flagship, normally selling for $599 on Amazon, so you’re looking at a 33% discount. Not bad at all, for a device that delivers a beautiful display, the best processor of 2015 and a fantastic camera into a sleek design.
- Samsung Galaxy S6 Factory Unlocked 32GB Smartphone (U.S. Version) for $399 (down from $600)
These are both “deals of the day,” but with so many people out prowling for a bargain, there’s no telling for how long stocks will last. Better hurry.
In other deals, Amazon is also discounting the well reviewed UE BOOM Wireless Bluetooth Speaker in all colors down to $99.99. This 360 degree wireless speaker has a great 4.6 stars score across thousands of reviews. It features a solid build and water and stain resistance, and drops a rich bass and a high volume.
- UE BOOM Wireless Bluetooth Speaker for $99.99 (down from $199)
Looking for a good Bluetooth keyboard for your smartphone or tablet? Amazon has the Blue Logitech Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard K480 down to $24.99, half its list price, and better than any deal before. 4.3 stars across 570 reviews. Check it out!
- Logitech Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard K480 for $24.99 (down from $49)
Need a little more brain power? Acer’s got your back, with its C720 11.6-inch Chromebook going for just $229.99. You get an Intel i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of SSD storage space, and Intel HD Graphics 4400, with a battery life of 8.5 hours. That may not sound like much, but Google’s Chrome OS runs smoothly on this hardware, making it perfect as a second laptop.
- Acer C720-3404 11.6-Inch Chromebook (Intel Core i3, 4 GB) Granite Gray for $229 (down from $379)
Happy shopping!
Nexus 5X is $80 off across Play Store, Amazon, and B&H Photo
Got your sights on a brand new Nexus 5X? Now may be the best time to get, as the LG-made device has just been discounted by a cool $80 across several retailers.
The Nexus 5X is also discounted in the Google Store:
And at B&H Photo, where you also get a $25 gift card with the purchase!
The Nexus 5X may not be the best bang for your buck smartphone of all time, but it is definitely a fantastic device with a lot to offer. If you are someone who has been waiting 2 long years to upgrade from the Nexus 5, the much-improved camera and the latest iteration of Android make the Nexus 5X completely worth the upgrade. Check out our full review of the Nexus 5X here.

DJI’s MG-1 drone is water-resistant, dustproof.. and made for farming

DJI’s newest drone isn’t its sexiest: it’s a specialized, toughened agricultural drone. Yep, hard to get excited about unless you’re a farmer perhaps, but the Agras MG-1 is dust-proof, water resistant and constructed from anti-corrosive materials. Smart decisions for an agriculture drone, but also ones we wouldn’t mind some extra peace of mind in the consumer drones we pilot in the suburbs and cities. (Rain is a real danger, okay?) The MG-1 can even be rinsed clean after a day on ranch. When it comes to crop-spraying, the drone can carry over 10kgs of product — and DJI pegs it at over 40 times more efficient than manual spraying — although it uses a watering can to illustrate the comparison…

This crowdfunded router updates its own security
It’s really, really, really hard to make a router sound exciting, but the folks behind the Turris Omnia are betting the device’s focus on keeping your sensitive data secure might grab you. The manufacturer’s IndieGogo campaign still has 45 days to go, but it’s already proved incredibly popular: over a thousand backers have pledged some $274,598 as of this writing. That’s 275 percent higher than the threshold for funding the project. The router itself runs Turris’ open source operating system (based on the OpenWRT project) which auto updates as soon as any type of vulnerability is discovered by its cadre of developers.
