How to Install Windows 10 on Your Mac Using Boot Camp Assistant

windows_10_boxFollowing the launch of Windows 10, Apple updated Boot Camp to support the latest Windows operating system on select Mac computers from 2012 and newer. If you’ve always wanted to try Windows on your Mac and think that now is the time to finally take the plunge, we can help you get through the basics with our how-to guide for installing Windows 10 on your Mac using Apple’s Boot Camp Assistant.

This guide assumes you are installing Windows on your computer for the first time.

What You Need

You will, of course, need Windows 10, which can be purchased from Microsoft for $119. Older Mac computers support older versions of Windows, but won’t work with Windows 10.

Make sure to check the system requirements for the version of Windows you want to install to ensure your Mac meets or exceeds them. You can find out the system specs for your Mac using System Information, accessible by typing “System Information” into a Spotlight search or using the Apple menu to go to About This Mac –> System Report.

To install Windows 10 (or Windows 7 or 8 for that matter) you will need at least 30 GB of free space on your startup drive and you’ll need a keyboard and a mouse or trackpad to use with your computer.

If you’re running OS X El Capitan and have an 11- or 13-inch MacBook Air, a 13- or 15-inch MacBook Pro or the Mac Pro, there’s no need for a USB drive. If you’re running a different version of OS X or have an older Mac, you’ll need a 16 GB flash drive that doesn’t have anything you don’t want erased on it (Boot Camp Assistant automatically reformats the flash drive).

Huawei’s rumored Mate 8 flagship passes through China’s 3C Quality Certification website

Huawei_Mate_8_Invite

Huawei is set to launch its next flagship, the Mate 8, on November 26. But just weeks before the launch, we’re seeing the handset pass through China’s 3C Quality Certification website, toting some insane fast charging capabilities.

Huawei’s new Mate 8 flagship, according to the sheet, supports fast charging at 5V 2A and 9V 2A, bringing the maximum wattage to 18W. Those are some crazy numbers, and could point to a larger 4,000mAh battery in the new smartphone.

As you might expect with a flagship, the website is showing some impressive specifications on the Mate 8, sporting Huawei’s new Kirin 950 chipset. In addition, the smartphone is rumored to come in two variants, one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, another with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

As far as the screen goes, we’re expecting to see a 5.7-inch Full HD display on the Mate 8. The handset should take some good photos as well, since it could come with a 13-megapixel rear Sony camera, and an 8-megapixel front camera.

The device should be running Android 6.0 right out of the box, but will have Huawei’s own EMUI 4.0 skin over top of it. Keep in mind that Huawei has yet to confirm any of these specifications, so it’d be wise to take them with a grain of salt. However, these specs aren’t too far off from what we’ve seen in the past.

We’re only a couple of weeks away from launch, where Huawei will let in on all the details of the Mate 8.

Anyone excited?

Apple Music now available on Android

apple-music

Apple Music has finally made its way to Android.

Apple first announced that its new music service would be coming to Android devices sometime “this fall”, though we really haven’t heard much about it since then, aside from a few leaked screenshots. The majority of the features Apple originally announced would come with the service have made their way to the Android version, including the Beats 1 radio station, the Connect feature and the ability to get handpicked recommendations based on what you’re listening to. Since not all features are available in this first release, the app technically sports a “beta” tag for the time being.

Apple notes that music videos are missing from the Android version, and signing up for a family plan requires a Mac or iOS device for now.

Interested Android users can sign up for a three-month free trial. After the trial is up, individual plans will cost $9.99 per month, and when family plans become available, you can have up to six members on the same account for $14.99 per month.

The new Apple Music application for Android looks pretty similar to its iOS counterpart, though you can tell Apple at least tried to make it look a bit more like an Android app. It has a slide-out hamburger menu on the left hand side and even an overflow button for extra settings on each individual track. Interested in trying it out for yourself? Head to the Play Store link below for the download.

Kickstarted earbuds will automatically mold to the specific shape of your ear

revols-earbuds

Personalized earphones aren’t a new idea. Everyone has had that irritating experience of owning earbuds that needed constant readjustment lest they fall right out. A few people with money to burn got fed up with that experience and finally forked over the cash to get fitted for their own earbuds. What does that process look like? Well, if you want earphones custom-fitted to the exact shape of your ear, it’s usually going to take about $1000, a month-long ordeal, and interaction with an audiologist. However, one Kickstarter project is looking to change that.

They’re called Revols, and the young company by the same name is touting them as “The last earphones you’ll ever need.” These earbuds come with a generic shape, but once you put them in your ears and activate them with the accompanying smartphone app, the soft gel of the earpiece molds itself to the contours of your ear, permanently creating a shape perfectly suited for your ears. It takes sixty seconds, and you can do it in your own home, right out of the box.

Revols-conforming-earbud

The price tag? Once the project is funded, these Bluetooth earphones will sell for $300. However, those who back the Kickstarter campaign at $199 or $229 can get their hands on the whole package, plus a few extra perks.

The self-molding feature, while easily the most unique attribute about these earphones, isn’t their only selling point. Revols has gone out of their way to cram as much into this premium product as possible. The wireless earphones have an 8-14 hour battery life (depending on whether or not you spring for the Revive battery pack) and the top-of-the-line noise cancellation allows you to listen to your music at much safer volumes.

generic-earbuds-vs-revols

If you want to let some of the world around you in, the companion app has a slider that you can use to scale back the noise cancellation, allowing the earbuds to funnel a selected amount of outside noise into your ears.

Frankly, the whole setup looks slick as hell.  If you’re sick of replacing one cheap pair of headphones after another, you might want to check out the Kickstarter page and grab a pair of these babies at the reduced price. The campaign has already more than doubled its initial $100,000 goal, but it’s still got two months to go. Even if you’re not in the market for new earbuds, it’s nevertheless a fascinating product idea to read about.

T-Mobile will let its customers stream Netflix, Hulu and more for free

T-Mobile-G1-first-impressions-aa-3-of-13

At its Uncarrier X event earlier today, T-Mobile announced a new initiative called Binge On that will allow its customers to stream videos from popular services for free, without the need to take up any mobile data whatsoever. 24 video streaming services will be available at launch, including Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, HBO Now, Sling TV, Showtime, Vevo, Watch ESPN, Encore, Fox Sports and more. This is similar to the carrier’s Music Freedom program, which allows users to stream unlimited music from popular services like Spotify, Google Play Music and more without using up precious mobile data. The carrier says 200 million songs are streamed each day through Music Freedom.

24 video services will be available at launch, with more on the way

To take advantage of Binge On, you’ll need to be a new or existing Simple Choice plan customer. Streaming video through T-Mobile’s network will be available at “DVD quality or better,” says T-Mobile CEO John Legere. “DVD quality” was later clarified as 480p or above.

Of course, one could say that Binge On falls under net neutrality scrutiny, as users would be much more inclined to use these video partners rather than a video service that isn’t involved in Binge On. However, T-Mo says this isn’t the case because the video partners don’t pay to get involved with Binge On – it’s completely free for both video providers and customers.

In addition, the carrier also announced that it would be doubling every data bucket in its Simple Choice plans at no extra cost. Previously the company offered data tiers of 1, 3 and 5 gigabytes, and now those tiers will be raised to 2, 6 and 10 gigabytes for the same price.

Both Binge On and the new Simple Choice plans will be available to new customers starting Sunday, November 15th. Binge On will be available to existing customers on Thursday, November 19th.

T-Mobile’s ‘Binge On’ lets you stream video, leave your data untouched

T-Mobile CEO John Legere is on a bit of a tear over in Los Angeles right now — after doubling the amount of mobile data T-Mo customers will get as part of the carrier’s Simple Choice Amped plans, he confirmed the existence of a Music Freedom-like feature for video services. Long story short, T-Mobile customers will be able to watch video at “DVD quality or better” (480p and above) from 24 streaming services without eating into their high-speed data buckets. And the price? As usual, it’ll cost you a whopping zero additional dollars starting on Sunday for people who switch to the company’s new Simple Choice Amped plans.

T-Mobile Unveils Doubled Data Plans, Free Video Streaming at Un-Carrier X Event

T-Mobile CEO John Legere today hosted an Un-Carrier X event, where he announced T-Mobile’s latest offering, free video streaming. Going forward, T-Mobile customers who watch streaming video will not have the video data count towards their monthly data usage.

That means services like YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu will no longer eat up data, making T-Mobile’s data plans go further. T-Mobile’s lowest-priced plan costs $50 per month and includes just 2GB of data, but T-Mobile is now the only company that excludes video streaming data from data usage. T-Mobile also allows for free streaming music, a perk introduced at an earlier event.

With the new Binge-On free video streaming service, there are 24 current partners, and the program is open to any video streaming product that wants to participate. Binge-On uses a proprietary data compression algorithm to stream 480p “DVD quality” video that uses a smaller amount of data to a T-Mobile device. For those who don’t want to use the compression service, it can be toggled off. Binge-On is available to customers with a 3GB plan or higher.

bingeontmobile

Binge-On partners at launch include Netflix, HBO Now, HBO Go, Hulu, WatchESPN, Showtime, Starz Play, Encore Play, Vevo, MLB.tv, NBC Sports, Movieplex Play, Vessel, Sling TV, Sling Box, T-Mobile TV, Go90, DirecTV, Univision Sports, Crackle, FOX Sports, FOX Sports Go, Vudu, and Ustream.

T-Mobile has also doubled the amount of data available to its Simple Choice customers. Rather than offering data in 1GB, 3GB, and 5GB increments, T-Mobile is now offering 2GB, 6GB, 10GB, and unlimited plans.

Customer plans are being doubled at no cost and a new Family Match promotion doubles the amount of data available to each family member. A family of four can now get 6GB of data each for a total of $120 per month using Family Match. Family Match includes a free fourth line for all customers as part of a limited time promotion.

Over the course of the last two years, T-Mobile has aimed to disrupt traditional mobile service with its 10 “Un-carrier” initiatives. The company began with uncoupling device costs from service costs in 2013, and then went on to offer several additional incentives to encourage customers to switch to the carrier, including paying early termination fees, offering a JUMP! upgrade plan, unlimited texting and 2G data in 100 countries, free streaming music from Spotify, Rdio, iTunes Radio, and Pandora, one week free trials to test the T-Mobile service, Wi-Fi calling, data rollovers, and low-cost plans for businesses.

How Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 will improve next year’s gadgets

Qualcomm officially unveiled its latest mobile chip, the Snapdragon 820, at a media event in New York City this morning. But, given that the company has been divulging details about the 820 for the past few months, you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that it was announced long ago. We already know that the Snapdragon 820’s Adreno 530 GPU is around 40 percent faster than the 810’s graphics (making it ideal for VR); it will deliver LTE speeds of up to 600 Mbps and support 802.11ad WiFi; it’s significantly more power-efficient; and it’ll use machine learning to fight malware right on your device. So what’s left to announce? Not much, it turns out. But Qualcomm did give us a look at how the 820’s new features could be applied to devices in 2016. Slideshow-340757

Sony’s first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases will arrive early next year

If you were hoping Ultra HD Blu-ray discs would be here in time for the holidays, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer. Well, as far as Sony Pictures content is concerned anyway. The company announced today that its 4K Ultra HD discs will go on sale “in early 2016,” missing the end-of-the-year estimate the Blu-ray Disc Association revealed back in August. When Sony’s catalog does arrive, you can expect The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Salt, Hancock, Chappie, Pineapple Express, and The Smurfs 2 to be included in the first wave of releases. Newer movies like Fury and Captain Philips are in the works as well, and after being restored from the original film, the likes of Ghostbusters and The Fifth Element will make the leap to 4K, too.

Apple Raises TestFlight Beta Tester Limit to 2,000, Extends Build Expiration to 60 Days

testflightApple today announced it is now allowing developers to invite up to 2,000 individuals to beta test iOS and tvOS apps using the TestFlight beta testing platform, an increase from the former 1,000 participant limit.

Since its 2014 launch, Apple has capped TestFlight beta testers at 1,000, but announced plans to expand that number at the June Worldwide Developers Conference. Apple has now made good on that promise, boosting the number of people who can install a beta app.

Apple has also increased the period of time before a TestFlight beta expires from 30 days to 60 days, another change that was first announced at WWDC.
