The massive 18.4″ Samsung Galaxy View tablet arrives Nov. 20 at AT&T

AT&T is first again in getting a new device. Most recently they got the LG Urbane Watch 2nd Edition in before all other carriers, and now they will be offering the massive 18.4″ Samsung Galaxy View. The Samsung Galaxy View is one of the largest tablets you can get your hands on with an 18.4″ 1080p display, LTE connectivity, a built-in kickstand since you’ll be watching a lot of video on it, and large speakers to make your movie watching a complete experience.

Samsung-Galaxy-View-SamMobile_006

The Galaxy View comes with 64GB of built-in memory, and with a battery that offers eight full hours of continuous play. With 64GB(expandable to 128GB) of on-board storage, there is plenty of space to download hours of entertainment as that is exactly what the Galaxy View is designed to be.

In just four days on November 20th, the Samsung Galaxy View will be available to purchase at AT&T.com and in AT&T stores nationwide. Customers have three options when making a purchase:

  • Two-year agreement for $499.99 with a $10 access charge to a Mobile Share Value plan
  • $30 per month for 20 months on the AT&T Tablet Installment plan
  • New or existing customers of DIRECTV can pay $99.99 for the tablet with a two-year agreement

“The Samsung Galaxy View is the best parts of a TV and tablet, designed with entertainment as its primary focus,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Device Marketing and Developer Services, AT&T Mobility. “We know our customers are watching video in ways they never used to, and with this tablet you can shift where and when content is consumed. No other Samsung device provides this combination of integrated entertainment experience and value.”

As a fan of Samsung I might have to check this tablet out. Although I don’t think I would be travelling much with it, because it is so massive.

Some iPad Pros Unresponsive After Charging, Requiring Hard Restart

A growing number of users on the Apple Support Communities, MacRumors discussion forums and social media have reported issues with the iPad Pro becoming unresponsive after being charged for a lengthy amount of time, forcing affected users to perform a hard restart to turn the device back on.

iPad-Pro-Charging

MacRumors forum member “BizzaroClark” claims that, on multiple occasions, his iPad Pro has “appeared frozen” and “will not wake” after being charged. After hard resetting the iPad Pro, he said the device has 100% battery life. Dozens of users have shared similar experiences over the past five days.

At least twice I have left my iPad Pro plugged in, once over night, and once during work. When I returned to my iPad it appeared frozen. Black screen, screen will not wake. I had to do a hard reset twice to get the thing to work again. After the hard reset the battery was 100%.

Apple blog Mac Kung Fu pointed us towards Apple Support Communities and Reddit topics about the issue with nearly 5,000 views and 200 comments combined, indicating the problem is rather widespread. iPad Pro user “darkfire.shadows” shared his experience in the Apple Support Communities:

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed. When I woke up it was “dead”. It wouldn’t wake up. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life. Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand. Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day. Came back to it, same thing. Dead.

MacRumors confirmed the issue has affected one of our iPad Pros since last Wednesday.

The issue has affected both 32GB and 128GB iPad Pros on iOS 9.1, including Wi-Fi and LTE models. It remains unclear if the problem is rooted in hardware or software, but some users speculate that restoring from an iCloud backup during setup may be contributing to the freezing issues.

Apple’s support team has provided customers with mixed solutions, ranging from restoring the iPad to factory settings using iTunes to force restarting the device by holding down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons simultaneously for at least ten seconds, until an Apple logo appears on the screen.

Last month, we reported that some iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone 6 users have experienced similar issues with their smartphones randomly powering off, even when left unattended and with sufficient battery power, indicating this could be a broader iOS 9 issue. Apple has not officially commented on the matter.

Withings Activité Steel is latest tracker from health company

withings-activite-steel-closeup (3)

Withings announced today a new addition to their line of Activité activity trackers, the Activité Steel. Unlike many of the trackers hitting the market today as dedicated units, like those from Fitbit or Jawbone, or built in to smartwatches like the Motorola Moto 360 or the Samsung Gear S2, Withings is following a hybrid route with the Activité Steel by combining a traditional watch with a modern activity tracker.

The Activité Steel consists of a stainless steel case enclosing chrome watch hands for the larger, traditional watch dial. A sub-dial located on the watch face provides a quick look at the percentage of progress towards the daily activity goal set by the user through the Withings Health Mate applicaiton. Besides counting steps, Withings says the Activité Steel can automatically detect activities like running and swimming and will monitor sleep without user input.

Although users may not get the benefits of a smartwatch with the Activité Steel, they do get an eight month battery life out of a standard watch battery and the device is water-resistant up to 50 meters, like a traditional watch.

The Withings Activité Steel will be available exclusively through the withings.com web site for $169.95. Initially, and probably throughout the holiday shopping season, the device will only be available in classic black. You can read the full press release from Withings below for more details if you are interested in picking up an Activité Steel.

Withings Strengthens Its Activity Tracker Lineup With The Introduction of Activité Steel

Activité Steel retains the most wearable, wearable title with confident masculine design

November 16, 2015 – BOSTON, MA – Withings, a leader in the connected health revolution, today announced the extension of its Activité line of highly stylized activity trackers with the introduction of Activité Steel. Continuing to spearhead the unique category of stunningly designed trackers within fashionable timepieces, Activité Steel marries the tasteful, high-end luxury feel of the original Swiss made Activité with the fun, versatility and value price point of the Activité Pop.

Exclusively available at Withings.com for the 2015 Holiday Season, Activité Steel features a bold, sophisticated design. With a stainless steel case, chrome hands, smooth silicone straps and a tachymeter-inspired sub-dial that appears to be taken directly from a high performance sports car, Activité Steel has a distinctive masculine feel. With a premium finish at a $169.95 price point, it will initially be available in classic black.

Like its predecessors, Activité Steel features two hand dials, one showing the time and a sub-dial showing the percentage of daily activity goal achieved. The activity goal (e.g. 10,000 steps) is set within the free Withings Health Mate application (available on iOS and Android) and, throughout the day, keeps users up to date on their progress, at a glance. It also automatically detects activities (such as running and swimming) and will transition to monitor sleep when worn at night. Powered by a standard watch battery that lasts up to 8 months, there is no need for regular charging and the device is water-resistant up to 50 meters.

“While the tracker market is booming we see growing demand from health conscious people who are not willing to compromise their style,” says Cédric Hutchings, CEO of Withings. “Steel is the perfect Christmas gift for those demanding trendsetters.”

All three Activité models connect to the Withings Health Mate application, named as one of Apple’s Best Apps of 2014. Health Mate acts as a personal coach to track and motivate users to achieve their own activity goals as well as advanced food log capabilities thanks to a proprietary integration with MyFitnessPal. The app also includes an interactive leader board, personal “data insights,” smart reminders and achievement badges. The application also integrates with over 150 partners whose services add to the 360° wellness experience (GPS running, food logging, etc.).

Hail a scooter-riding ‘Vallie’ to park your car in London

Driving in London can be slow and stressful enough, but finding a parking spot? Eesh. For many locals, that’s the stuff of nightmares. Vallie wants to solve the problem with a valet parking app that lets you request custom drop-off and pick-up points inside the city. The service is available right now, but there are some caveats to be aware of; one, it’s only available in a small patch of central London, between Farringdon and Aldgate; two, parking costs £8 per hour or £25 per day; three, Vallie only operates Monday to Friday, 7am to 8pm, so late-night dinners and weekend expeditions are out of the question.

Uber drivers can pick you up when you’re headed the same way

Uber Tops Taxis

Uber drivers live with uncertainty: there’s no guarantee that they’ll get a passenger on the way home from a long shift, or while they’re running errands. However, they’re about to catch a break. Uber is rolling out a feature (currently only in the San Francisco Bay Area) that lets drivers set destinations twice a day, and pick up you up only if you’re headed in the same direction. If all goes well, they won’t have to waste as much time when they’re not taking fares.

New Asus ZenFone Zoom variant passes through China’s TENAA

ASUS-Zenfone-Zoom-Taiwan-event

Asus has released several ZenFone models this year so far, and may be intending to release another: a new model of the ZenFone Zoom, a unique product first announced at CES this past January and then seen again back in September. The smartphone, which features a 3X optical zoom, has now seen a new model number/variant recently pass through China’s telecommunication agency, the TENAA.

As the pictures clearly show, the new device has capacitive buttons on the front, and a giant camera module around the back:

This new ZenFone Zoom variant has been given the model number Z00XSB and features a 5.5-inch FHD IPS display. It was certified as having a Quad Core 2.4GHz SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of on-board storage, a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. MicroSD support is included, as is GSM, TD-SCDMA, TD-LTE, LTE DDD, and both WCDMA and 3G. The device runs Android 5.0, weighs 185 grams, and measures 158.9 × 78.84 × 11.95mm. It will be available in black and white color options.

It remains to be seen exactly when this new variant of the Zoom will be formally announced and/or released. Asus is planning an event in Taiwan early next month to launch the Zoom, but it now seems up-in-the-air as to which model(s) will be present. It’s possible that Asus has simply opted to modify the original specs  –  much like Samsung did with the original Galaxy Note 10.1 –  in the time since its original announcement.

ASUS Zenfone Zoom Hands On-1

From our hands-on with the previous variant announced.

Alternatively, the model we are seeing today may be just a customary filing with China’s TENAA, similar to how America’s FCC inspects telecommunications products that will not be releasing in the country.

Only time may tell what the future holds in store, but at the very least those who are looking for some more manipulable magnification now have something to look forward to.

Sony Xperia Z5 camera update rolls out today

sony-xperia-z5-review-10

The Xperia Z5 range already boasts one of the best smartphone cameras in the business right now, and Sony is busy rolling out a new software update today that will give the flagship’s camera some new features to help you capture even better looking photos.

Xperia Z5 camera app updateThe changes have been made to the camera app’s user interface, switching over to a more minimalist look and adding in some new features to select different capture modes. Moving between camera modes, such as manual or auto mode, can now be done with a simple swipe. On screen sliders can also be used to tweak some settings via a quick touch, to adjust your photos to just how you like them.

There’s no mention of tweaks to camera processing or any major new photography features. Instead, the update is designed to make the UI a little friendlier and more practical, to help capture the best looking shots.

The update applies to the Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium smartphones. Some customers may notice the update arrive today, but the roll out will take a little longer to reach some regions and carrier branded handsets.

LG G5 may have a metal unibody design

lg-logo-mwc-2015-s

Assuming Samsung had not sprung for the metal and glass Galaxy S6 design language, it’s likely that critics of LG’s G4 would have found much less to complain about. In the end, what the company did produce was a refinement of its G3 from last year, and – in part – attention was paid to the fact that this year’s offering still supplied a user replaceable battery and included microSD support. Two things Samsung removed. Still, the build quality was often cited as being a cause for the consideration that the G4 was “not premium”. Things may be in for a major change next year, at least based on a new rumor.

A report on Naver posted earlier today suggests that LG will in fact, be using a metal unibody for 2016’s G5. While this isn’t much to go on, it would logically make sense given that the company has already sought to include metal in its recently released V10 handset. While it would remain to be seen as to what kind of metal the G5 would have – the V10 is amazingly resilient to drops – at the very least it would serve to offer a more direct rivalry with whatever premium product Samsung plans to launch next year, be it early or business as usual.

LG has been suffering from sluggish sales, both with its G4 and – at least according to reports in Korea – the new V10. This kind of drastic design difference could be just what the doctor ordered.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind our readers that until LG itself makes any information public, this kind of news is therefore unconfirmed and speculative.

What do you think? Would a unibody design make all the difference for your consideration of the G5? While it would seemingly negate the user-replaceable battery bit, microSD could still be supported. Let us know in the comments section below!

If they mated: Samsung has a Galaxy S6-esque Android flip phone with some surprising specs

Samsung has released some very interesting devices over the years, including a 7-inch phone and a series of dual-screen flip phones known as the Galaxy Golden. This year, the Korean conglomerate let loose a redesigned Galaxy S6 proving that even its most stable staples are subject to scrutiny and substitution. Few might have considered what a mash-up of the latter two objects of obsession may have managed if they mated. Thankfully Samsung has gone and created it anyway:

#gallery-1

#gallery-1 .gallery-item

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Behold the SM-W2016. While a name has yet to be attached to the product number, one might surmise that the “W” has to do with the double screen, and 2016 could be the year it will release. Indeed the device itself could end up being called the Galaxy W (2016), especially since SamMobile has stated it will not be called the Galaxy Golden 3.

Thanks to its time at the TENAA, specs have already been provided. The device, which has glass and metal, will include two 3.9-inch SAMOLED displays (1280X768), a 64-Bit Octa Core Exynos 7420 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of on-board storage, a 16-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel rear camera. The device has Android 5.1.1, features an obligatory T9 numeric keypad, weighs 204 grams and is 120.4 x 61 x 15.1 mm.

Those whose mouth are still agape in awe at this product should consider that (1) it will probably not release outside Asia, and (2) Samsung itself has yet to make any official announcement so at this stage it’s too early to say anything super specific.

Samsung Galaxy Golden

The Galaxy Golden (Korean variant pictured) was also released in China and several other Asian markets.

With that said however, there is something definitely defiant about a flip phone adorned in metal and glass. Perhaps even more so given the presence of the bio-metric sensor along the back side. Whereas the Galaxy Golden line was targeting consumers in their “golden years”, this device almost seems to destined for the younger market, especially considering the specs inside.

As for the issue of if a flip phone form factor works with Android, several companies in Asia currently manufacturer such products, including Samsung, Sharp, and LG. Would you be interested in this one? Please leave your comments below and be sure to let us know!
