Leaked Huawei Mate 8 renders: sleek body and nearly nonnexistent bezels

Huawei has worked hard to make a good name out of the Mate series. These devices have been outstanding, and the latest-generation Ascend Mate 7 happened to get a great review from us. 2015 is now coming to an end and it’s time for the Mate 8 to come around, a phone that should be announced in just a couple days.
Rumors have been coming around, including specs and some images, but we have to say the latest leak offers the best look at the Huawei Mate 8 that we have seen so far. These are not actual shots. Instead, we are presented with a set of press renders that show us every single detail on the phone’s aesthetics.

As we have seen in the past, the Huawei Mate 8 looks to carry a sleek and sturdy metal uni-body so many manufacturers have been adopting lately. They also show a fingerprint reader in the back, as well as a camera and dual-LED flash. The right side of the handset sports a power button and volume rocker, with a 3.5 mm headset jack adorning the top and a charging port in the bottom.

What most of you will notice right away is that screen, though, which seems to predominant when looking at the front. Those bezels are as thin as they get, giving off the impression that there is no metal on the sides of the phone. Now, this could be either good or bad depending on your preferences, but I am sure many of us can agree that it makes the smartphone very good looking.

We won’t know the exact details for a bit, and these images don’t give off anything on the internals, but we have heard the phone will come with a Kirin 950 processor (comparable to the Snapdragon 810), a Mali-T880 GPU 3-4 GB of RAM and 32-64 GB of internal storage.
Stay tuned for more details to come on November 26th! Who knows, we might even get some more leaks and rumors before then. Regardless, are any of you thinking of getting a Huawei Mate 8?
Sony PlayStation 4 sales speed past 30 million
In just over two years Sony’s sold over 30 million PlayStation 4s. That tally was 20.2 million in March, and now ahead of the busy holiday shopping season we have word from the Japanese tech giant that it’s sold through more than 30.2 million consoles to some 124 countries and regions globally. That’s roughly 1.25 million consoles per month since then, as of November 22nd. Impressive! Of course, Microsoft announced that the Xbox One was the number one-selling console for October, and that Halo 5 was the best selling game last month, but as per usual didn’t give out any hard numbers.
Black Friday foot traffic doesn’t peak when you think it does
The day that practically every retail worker loathes with a passion is almost upon us: Black Friday. To get an idea of just how much of a nightmare shopping is on the day after Thanksgiving, Google turned to foot traffic data based on aggregated, anonymized mobile location history info gathered last year. Perhaps most surprising is that stores apparently aren’t at their busiest during doorbuster deals in the wee hours, but between 2PM and 4PM — the early-bird deals are actually when store traffic is at its lowest across the board. What’s more, only certain types of stores see their traffic at their highest on that first shopping day of the holiday season: consumer electronics and cellphone stores. Malls, department stores and “superstores/discount stores” (likely places akin to Costco and Sam’s Club)? They’re typically busiest the last Saturday before Christmas.

Bring your music with you with the LuguLake Blade Bluetooth speaker (Review)
LuguLake is a name brand that you probably haven’t heard of. I certainly had not until I got the change to offer the LuguLake Swan and Blade Bluetooth wireless speakers. I definitely had no expectations going into both reviews, but I learned that you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to get high quality sound.
LuguLake Blade Design
I love brilliance in simplicity. The LuguLake Blade is a portable speaker that is about the size of a five inch smartphone, just twice as thick and similar in weight. It is a rectangular device, covered in a soft rubbery plastic with dual front facing speakers with a red mesh grill. The Blade is unassuming and looks fantastic.
On the side is a power switch, three LED light indicator for power, and a covered port for a micro-SD card, 3.5mm input and charging slot. On the top side of the speaker is where you’ll find the controls: play/pause, Bluetooth connect, rewind, fast forward, volume up/down and answer/hang up for a call.
Included in the box is a 3.5mm male to male cable and a micro-USB charging cable.
LuguLake Blade Usage
For a device this small I definitely not expecting much when it came to sound. But I was pleasantly surprised to hear how much sound and loudness could come from such a small package. The old adage of “don’t judge a book by its cover” definitely came into play here as the Blade pumped out sound as loud as speakers three times its size.
The only downside when it came to sound, keep in mind this isn’t a speaker for an audiophile, was that it lacked depth in the bass category. To produce decent bass a speaker needs size and room to move air, which being so small, is something that is technically very difficult to do for a speaker of this size. So if you’re a huge fan of bass, don’t expect the Blade to knock your shoes off. In terms of mids and highs, the Blade delivered very clear sound reproduction.
Because of its smaller size and portability, I found myself taking it with me to the dog park and playing music for a few of my friends who I meet on a regular basis. They were just as surprised to hear how loud the Blade got, and had asked me where they could buy one once I told them the price was less than $50.
One of my favorite features is the ability to connect to the speaker via a tap using NFC. My Nexus 6P connected within a matter of seconds once I tapped my phone to the backside of the speaker.
I also brought this speaker with me on a recent overnight business trip, because I listen to music every night before bed. And I hate listening to music on my smartphone speakers because it never sounds good. It’s really nice to be able to pack a speaker so light and small that it doesn’t take up much space in my carry-on bag. In fact I thought I forgot it at home because it was hidden at the bottom of the front pocket of my carry-on bag.
On the overnight trip, I took two work calls from the speaker and if you sit within arm’s length, it performs very well. Once I strayed from that distance the person on the other end of the call had a hard time hearing me. This isn’t uncommon with most Bluetooth speakers.
At 75% volume I was frequently achieving four to five hours of use before I had to recharge it.
The LuguLake Blade is definitely one of the more practical wireless speakers you can get today with its affordable price, portability and sound quality.

74% of all Android devices can have their passcode bypassed if Google is ordered to do so
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
You know that huge uproar we had about Android security a few weeks ago? Well, looks like we’re in for another round as a new report prepared by the New York District Attorney’s Office has suggested that 74% of all Android devices could have their passcode bypassed by Google if a court order is passed, allowing authorities to remotely access these devices. The reason why this number is so big is because full disk encryption is not necessarily enabled for most devices – in fact, only Android 5.0 and higher devices would be safe, and even then only if it is enabled (and in some cases, it isn’t enabled by default). This is an excerpt from the report:
“Forensic examiners are able to bypass passcodes on some of those devices using a variety of forensic techniques.
For some other types of Android devices, Google can reset the passcodes when served with a search warrant and an order instructing them to assist law enforcement to extract data from the device. This process can be done by Google remotely and allows forensic examiners to view the contents of a device.”
The 74% figure comes from the latest statistics reported by the Android Developer Dashboard, and although that number will continue to decrease as time goes on, it’s not going to disappear overnight. Note however that this number is realistically much lower as the capability to remote reset devices is only available when a device is using the Pattern security measure – PIN and Password security cannot be bypassed this way.
If you do use Pattern, that still leaves the rather confronting possibility that your device could be accessed remotely – naturally, we’re assuming that this power will only be used for good, but it wouldn’t be the first time power has been misused.
What do you think about this capability to bypass passcodes? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Google will make its Accelerated Mobile Pages Project work available early next year
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The paint is still drying on the Accelerated Mobile Pages Project which was announced last month, but Google is already promising that it’s going to start rolling out sometime early next year. For those who don’t know, the Accelerated Mobile Pages Project is Google’s attempt to make mobile web pages load faster, and Google is saying that the response has been great so far with 4,500 developers following the proceedings on GitHub. There’s also a long list of headlining web content publishers who have already voiced their support:
“Thousands of publishers have expressed interest in AMP since the preview launched with the likes of the BBC, Sankei, New York Times, News Corp, Washington Post and more. Since then, many others have committed their support to the project, including R7.com and NZN Group in Brazil; CBS Interactive, AOL, Thrillist, Slate, International Business Times/Newsweek, Al Jazeera America and The Next Web in the US; El Universal and Milenio in Mexico; The Globe and Mail and Postmedia in Canada, as well as many more across the globe. The Local Media Consortium (LMC), a partnership of 70+ media companies collectively representing 1,600 local newspapers and television stations, has also voiced their support.”
There still seems like there is significant work to do on all accounts – Google isn’t committing to a more specific timeline yet – but it’s definitely got the support to make things better. This isn’t the only project that’s trying to speed up mobile webpages with similar efforts from Apple and Facebook circulating as well.
What do you think about the Accelerated Mobile Pages Project? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Officials link hacker to theft of 1.2 billion log-in credentials
The FBI is linking a hacker only known by the moniker “mr. grey” to a whopping 1.2 billion stolen internet credentials after finding his Russian email address in the evidence it gathered. It’s unclear if he obtained all those by himself, though, or if he’s even just a single person or a group of people operating under one name. Either way, if there were a contest for hackers, mr. grey would’ve won it by now, as this is apparently the biggest collection of stolen log-in details the FBI has investigated thus far. Reuters says that info came from the court documents the feds submitted to support its search warrant request in 2014. The authorities got their tip from cybersecurity firm Hold Security, which found out that a Russian hacking group called CyberVor has stolen 1.2 billion log-in details and over 500 million email addresses.

Gionee Marathon M5 and its massive 6,020 mAh battery reach India

Gionee announced the Marathon M5 last June, a phone which quickly became one of the most enticing Chinese handsets around. And it’s not for its specs or design (at least not as much), it’s because this bad boy packs two batteries, adding up to a massive 6,020 mAh of pure juice.
It was only released in china for CNY 2,299 (about $370 USD, back then). Now the company has taken the stage at a press conference in Bangalore to announce that the Marathon M5 is now available in India for ₹17,999 (about $272 USD) from Flipkart.

The name of this handset is very fitting, as it can literally run laps around most other handsets out there. In fact, Gionee claims this bad boy can last up to 4 days on a single charge. It’s so filled with energy that it can even charge other devices, so it could even act as your battery pack!
Other specs include a 5.5-inch 720p screen, a 1.3 GHz MediaTek MT6735 quad-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage (microSD support), a 13 MP main camera and a 5 MP front-facing shooter, all powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop.

As mentioned earlier, this is definitely not the phone you write home about, but it’s the phone you will take when you are not home. It has enough battery for camping trips, weekend adventures and all that you can think of doing in 4 days!
