US Cellular now offering Samsung’s budget-friendly Galaxy Tab E

samsung_galaxy_tab_e_verizonUS Cellular has added a new tablet to its lineup, bringing Samsung’s wallet-friendly Galaxy Tab E to the mix. The 16 GB tablet offers plenty of bells and whistles for someone looking for a lightweight device to watch movies and browse the internet on, with some of Samsung’s fancy camera modes and the popular Kids Mode. It offers expandable memory and a 5,000 mAh battery, so it’s a decent option for a binge watching machine, especially if you don’t want to splurge on some of the high end devices.

The Tab E runs about $9 per month through financing, or $129 on a two-year contract, plus the actual cost of service on your plan. Not a terrible option for a light user or a kid.

Rdio’s subscribers will be cut on Tuesday, but the service isn’t gone yet

Rdio

Pandora disclosed its acquisition of “key assets” from Rdio on Tuesday and the latter music streaming service confirmed it would be shuttering. Rdio failed to remain competitive in a world where dozens of players are vying for subscribers. The status of Rdio subscribers was unknown immediately following the announcement of Pandora’s acquisition; however, Rdio has finally clarified what will happen to those paying a monthly fee for premium features.

Rdio will stop accepting new customers on Monday, November 23, while cutting existing subscriptions that same day. Those currently paying a monthly fee for Rdio will no longer be doing so as the service moves them to free accounts.

Here is the statement on Rdio’s customer support page:

Effective Monday, November 23, if you currently have an Rdio subscription, it will be canceled on your next billing date, and you will no longer be automatically charged. Rest assured that your subscription will remain active for any period of time you’ve already been billed. Also starting November 23, Rdio will no longer take new subscriptions.

Operations will not cease for Rdio as an official termination date for the service has not been scheduled. For now, Rdio’s ad-supported version will continue to be accessible. Rdio also plans on allowing data, which includes playlists and favorites, to be exported.

Google adding new features to mobile search in time for the holidays

google searchEvery year, Google tries to revamp its mobile search tool to better help holiday shoppers, and this year they’ve added a few new tricks that should help you get through your wish list without stressing out too much.

The first major new addition helps you to narrow down exactly what you’re looking for. Shoppers aren’t always looking for something specific, and usually search for broad terms in Google search. Now the search engine will bring back better results to help you specify exactly what you’re looking for, showing different categories as well as brand, features, and price. After narrowing things down, Google takes over and begins providing info on specific products.

If you search for a specific product up front, you’ll get all of that detailed information right away, including pricing, reviews, and where you can buy the product. Search will now also automatically list whether or not stores have the item in stock, and you can quickly grab driving directions to those locations. There’s nothing worse than driving all the way to that Best Buy on the other side of town only to find out they haven’t had Google’s new Chromecast in stock in two weeks.

Shopping related searches on mobile surpassed desktop searches for the first time ever these past few months, and Google is poised to take advantage of it.

HTC’s Jeff Gattis picked up by Google-backed Magic Leap

htc_vive_2

The name Jeffrey Gattis may not sound familiar to you, but the products overseen by him definitely are. RE Camera? Grip? Vive? All projects that Gattis was involved in as HTC’s Executive Director of Global Marketing for Connected Products. Anything involving imaging, wearables, virtual reality, and home automation at HTC received Gattis’ attention. He joined the company in in July 2014 after spending more than three years at TiVo, but now Gattis has left for another virtual reality-focused company backed by Google.

Magic Leap, a startup developing a virtual reality headset akin to Microsoft’s HoloLens, successfully poached Gattis from HTC.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Gattis sat down with UploadVR to explain why he left HTC:

“I think what struck me so much about Magic Leap was the quality of the technology and seeing how far along it was. I knew there was a great division but I didn’t know how far along the technology was and how close it is to becoming real and commercial. That was the biggest takeaway for me, and how it advanced and how quickly it has gotten to the point.”

Gattis’ LinkedIn profile already reflects his move from HTC to Magic Leap. Early next year, HTC is expected to start selling its Vive headset. The addition of Gattis to Magic Leap could indicate that its own virtual reality headset is incoming in the first half of 2016 as well.

Nintendo opened an eBay store for some reason

Looking for a good deal on a refurbished Wii U, but don’t like using Nintendo’s clunky online shop? Now you have another option — the company just opened an official eBay store, stocked with new and refurbished games, consoles and accessories. Don’t expect to find any deals though: almost everything on the official eBay store conforms to current retail prices (fixed using eBay’s “buy it now” feature) or Nintendo’s existing refurb pricing.

Google Play is giving away Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ album

google_play_music_disc_TA

The best-selling album worldwide is currently available for free through Google Play. This week, Google is giving away Michael Jackson’s 1982 album Thriller. What songs are featured on the album that sold more than 40 million copies? Just “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” “P.Y.T.,” and “Thriller” to name a few. In all, you’re getting around forty minutes of classic Michael Jackson.

Quite shocking that the world’s best-selling album is being given away so easily.

Oculus Concepts collects experimental mobile VR ‘games’ in one spot

Virtual reality is nothing if not an awesome font for weird little experiences, but they can be kind of difficult to find. Some are on Steam, some are available elsewhere. Oculus is hoping that Oculus Concepts, its new section of the Gear VR’s Oculus Store will make that easier. Concepts, like the name suggests, is a place where developers can toss their games and apps that might not be ready for primetime but are still worth checking out. One of the experiences shown off in official imagery is The Night Cafe: An Immersive Tribute to Van Gogh which was part of the Oculus Mobile VR Jam earlier this year. Like the company notes, some of the biggest VR games hit that status because they were released to the public early. So if you have a shiny new Gear VR and are looking to check out something aside from Netflix, here you go.

New ‘Sidefari’ App Allows iPad Users to View Side-by-Side Safari Windows

While Apple introduced a Split View mode in iOS 9 for iPad users to be able to use two apps side-by-side, it did not allow users to open two Safari windows side-by-side. A new app called Sidefari from developer Francisco Cantu (via MacStories) allows users to have two webpages open side-by-side to meet various browsing needs.

sidefariThe app works by using Safari View Controller to open a second webpage via Split View. To activate Sidefari, all a user has to do is open the Slide Over app picker and choose Sidefari. The app also works in multiple sizes, allowing users to use Sidefari to take up either half the screen or smaller. Sidefari is only available for the iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4 and iPad Pro as they are the only devices that support multitasking.

Sidefari for iPad is available in the App Store for $0.99. [Direct Link]
