ICYMI: Pigeon Cancer Detection, Pill Stethoscope and More

MIT scientists made a biomonitoring pill that patients can swallow to collect their pulse, breathing rate and internal temperature. And musicians have a new option in the form of the tiny Motus instrument, which recognizes shaking and twirling to create music out of movement.

The Moto G 2014 begins receiving Marshmallow update as part of Motorola’s Soak Test

Moto_G_2014_2nd_Gen_Main_TA

Motorola often releases builds of the latest version of Android for their devices via its ‘Soak Testing’ program, which allows device owners to enjoy the latest software features while finding and reporting any bugs with the firmware. There’s some good news if you’ve previously registered your Moto G 2014 (reviewed here) for a Soak Test as it seems that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is headed your way.

The Android 6.0 Marshmallow Soak Test is a 461MB download and began appearing on registered Moto G 2014 handsets yesterday. The Soak Test should bring Marshmallow features such as Google on Tap, native fingerprint support, Doze, and granular app permissions to name a few. As yet, no one has captured the OTA URL, so only Moto G 2014 handsets registered for the Soak Test are capable of receiving the Marshmallow firmware to test. Knowing the XDA forums, though, this state of affairs won’t last too long.

Is your Moto G 2014 registered for the Marshmallow Soak Test? If so, let us know if you’ve received the update and if you’ve found any bugs in the firmware.

Galaxy J3⑥ launched in China with 5-inch AMOLED display and 2,600 mAh battery

samsung galaxy j3 6

Remember that time when Samsung said it would cut down on the number of models it released? Well, a year later, it didn’t quite happen. Especially in the entry-level market, where Samsung is happily churning out new models, dumping old naming conventions for new and increasingly fanciful monikers.

Case in point, the Samsung Galaxy J3⑥, which just made its debut in China. Yes, the circled 6 is part of the actual name of the device. Our best guess is it has something to do with the auspicious nature the number 6 has in the Chinese culture. If we’re wrong – and we may very well be – we welcome an explanation.

The Galaxy J3⑥ comes with a 5-inch HD AMOLED display, a technology that so far, has been confined to the upper echelons of Samsung’s product line. The fact that AMOLED is making its way downrange could be a sign that Samsung is pulling all stops in its fight with the Chinese companies that have taken the entry-level market by storm. Two other premium features are rumored to be coming to cheap Samsung devices soon: Samsung Pay and fingerprint sensors.

Z

Other specs of the Galaxy J3⑥ include an unspecified quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1.5GB of RAM, just 8GB of expandable storage, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, and a generous 2,600 mAh battery.

The design of the Galaxy J3 ⑥ includes sculpted sides evoking the Galaxy S6, though this is a plastic construction, despite of the metallic appearance. Available in black, white, and the obligatory gold, the J3⑥ features a plastic rear cover. The device is 7.9 mm in thickness, which is quite good for a budget device.

The Galaxy J3⑥ runs TouchWiz, with a slew of additional apps available on demand.

For now, it appears that the Galaxy J3⑥ is exclusive to China Telecom, though we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung brought it elsewhere, perhaps with some minor modifications. No info on the official price just yet.

The Galaxy J3⑥ will go against phones from Motorola, Huawei, or Xiaomi, plus the OnePlus X (which we just reviewed), and a legion of other Chinese competitors.

Apple Expands Personal Pickup to United Kingdom

Following the launch of Personal Pickup in Australia and Canada earlier this week, Apple today expanded the in-store pickup service to the United Kingdom. Personal Pickup allows customers to place an order on the Apple Online Store or Apple Store app and pick it up at a nearby Apple Retail Store, generally within an hour.

Personal-Pickup-Apple-UK

Personal Pickup launched in the U.S. in 2011, but was unavailable elsewhere until this week. The service is offered for several Apple products, including Macs, iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs and the Apple Watch. Apple notifies customers via email or text message when their order is available for in-store pickup with a valid photo ID.

MacRumors broke the news earlier this month that Apple was planning an international expansion of Personal Pickup in Australia, Canada, France and the United Kingdom, and the service is now live in three of those four countries. The service will likely launch in at least a few more countries in the near future.

Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts has been working to bridge the gap between Apple’s online and retail store shopping experiences, and the international expansion of Personal Pickup fits within those plans. Apple has opened 463 retail stores in 17 countries since May 2001, with nearly 200 located outside the U.S.

Zite Shutting Down December 7, Recommends Flipboard to Users

News aggregator app Zite last night announced that it will no longer be functional past December 7, with the company encouraging fans to migrate their information and preferences over to similar app Flipboard before the deadline (via VentureBeat).

Flipboard acquired Zite in 2014 after a competitive few years together in the social media and news aggregation app sphere, keeping it open but slowly appropriating Zite’s features and services into Flipboard. Zite has been hinting at its impending closure for a few months, but kept silent on whether or not it would continue to run in the face of the Flipboard acquisition until now.

zite flipboard apps

“We wanted to ensure that Zite’s key functionality was available in Flipboard before asking users to migrate. Now that we’ve integrated all the major parts of the technology such as the topic engine, collaborative filtering algorithms and thumbs up and down voting, Zite will soon stop being available as its own app. Zite users have a few more weeks to import their preferences into Flipboard. We hope many of them will do this.”

Zite users will recieve a notification within the app, or a personalized email, of the impending closure, along with a step-by-step guide of how to migrate their data to Flipboard. All the app requires is the entry of Flipboard login information into Zite — a Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ login will work as well — to begin the migration process.

Similar to the newly launched Apple News, Flipboard provides customers a one-stop shop of all their prioritized daily news services. Flipboard [Direct Link] allows a bit more personalization, however, letting users construct digital magazines of favorite stories, pictures, and breaking news and share them on social media. The app was recently updated to bring full support of the larger screen on the iPad Pro, as well.

PixelJam brings space adventure game ‘Last Horizon’ to Google Play

Last_Horizon

‘Last Horizon’ is a new game from the makers of ‘Glorkian Warriors’ and ‘Dino Run.’ PixelJam’s latest game will take you on a minimalist space exploration and survival journey. The game revolves around the last survivor of the civilization who is required to gather resources from different planets and search for a new habitable world.

As part of the survival journey, you will encounter space-faring humans and alien lives, who may get angry if you take too many resources from their planets. In order to make it to the final destination alive, you must be a skillful pilot and carefully manage the resources as you travel across the galaxy. As you continue to gather fuel and oxygen from alien planets to keep your vessel afloat, you must watch out for occasional extraterrestrial attacks that may prove to be fatal.

The game’s visuals are pleasant to the eyes, the music is peaceful, the controls are simple – although they may need a bit of getting used to – and the plot is challenging. If you want to give it a shot, you can download it from Play Store for $2.99. It has no ads or in-app purchases.

[Deal] Get £20 of Play Store credit when buying the Chromecast v2 from the UK Google Store

chromecast_2015_10_ta_logo

The second version of Google’s Chromecast has been out for a couple of months now and has been well received, our very own Jeff Causey reviewed it for us, and said that Chromecast v2 was a ‘more well-rounded streaming device‘. If you live in the UK and have thought about ordering the Chromecast v2, either for yourself or as a gift, then Google will throw in some Play Store credit as an incentive.

While the Chromecast v2 will still cost £30, Google is throwing in £20 of Play Store credit to get you started. The Play Store credit can be used to buy anything within the Play Store, so you can buy apps, books, movies, tv shows, music, pretty much whatever you fancy. The promotion expires on January 15, and the £20 Play Store credit must be added to a UK Google account by January 31st.

With Christmas fast approaching, the Chromecast  v2 makes a great stocking filler, and the £20 Play Store credit really does sweeten the deal.

Google Photos’ new ad shows off improved image recognition feature

google_photos_icon_1

Google’s most recent advertisement posted on Android’s YouTube page shows off the advanced image recognition capabilities of the Photos app. Recently, we had seen similar commercials highlighting Play Music and the Google app.

The latest ad shows how Google Photos app helps a young woman find out that El Gato Loco, a freestyle wrestler, is actually her ex-boyfriend. The Photos app spots the similarity between the feline mask worn by the wrestler and the cat that the couple used to have, helping the young woman recognize El Gato Loco.

There is no doubt that Google Photos’ image recognition has seen a significant improvement since it started, but it still has a long way to go. There have been many gaffes in the past including the one where the app recognizes one African American user as a gorilla. In fact, my Photos app recognized a dancer friend as a dog, but that may have something to do with the pose or the makeup that they were wearing. However, a more accurate recognition will always be a welcome change.
