Marshmallow is next up for the NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet K1

nvidia-logoJust yesterday we told you that NVIDIA brought back its SHIELD Tablet K1 at a new low-price just in time for the holidays. Now we have a report of when SHIELD Tablet K1 owners will get hold of Google’s Marshmallow update.

NVIDIA has made it clear that even though the SHIELD Tablet K1 runs Android 5.1.1 out of the box, it will be updated to the latest Android 6.0 software in the coming months. NVIDIA’s goal is push the update in time for the holiday season. Unfortunately, the company didn’t mention any information regarding the original SHIELD tablet thus leaving the impression that owners of this device won’t get the update for quite some time. This is rather odd because of how similar the two tablets are.

With Android 6.0, SHIELD Tablet K1 owners will be able to play around with microSD cards more easily and gain other features such as Now on tap, doze Mode and app permissions.

Samsung wants to increase people’s desire for mid-range handsets

Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_Front_Top_Samsung_Logo_Version_2_TAA new report suggests that Samsung might bring some of the features found on its flagship lineups to mid-range handsets.

With the release of the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5, the company introduced a slew of new features. Samsung’s new strategy is to launch less smartphones but make them more desirable, and it’s going about this by introducing some of its most popular features on a wider variety of phones.

Some of Samsung’s mid-range handsets that could take part in this include the Galaxy A3, A5, A7, and A8. Currently, buyers who want the latest and greatest are forced to buy from one of Samsung’s upper lineups. According to The Korea Herald, Samsung may start by widening support for Samsung Pay, the company’s mobile payment service. Samsung believes this approach will not only lead to increase of desire for mid to low-range handsets, but generate more active users for its new payment service. The company will also seek to take design cues from its flagship lines for future handsets. It should also be noted that Samsung plans to bring a number of other sensors and features, although not directly specified.

New app to help people learn the English language

english_on_the_go_app_icon

Although English is only spoken as a native language by a little more than 5% of the world’s population, it seems like it is increasingly becoming the universal language for communicating across borders and cultures. That means there is a big demand for tools to help people learn to use English and all of its peculiarities. A new app called English on the Go is now available in the Google Play Store to help with this challenge.

Developed by a team out of Canada, English on the Go combines elements of social networking to help people learn English using their smartphones. Teachers using the app can create, post and share lectures wherever they happen to be using their smartphone or tablet device. English on the Go helps teachers break lessons down into shorter snippets that focus on themes. Using a commenting system, learners can ask questions and get answers in a manner that helps everyone following a particular lesson. With the social component present, users are also able to find other users who they can practice new skills with in every day usage situations.

You can install English on the Go using the Play Store link below.

ENGLISH ON THE GO! New App Gives Users Convenient Way to Learn English, Provides Ideal Platform for Both Teachers and Learners

08:40 ET from English On The Go

NEW YORK, Nov. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — People who want to learn English have a convenient new tool to do so. English on the Go is a new app developed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and it is the world’s first English study social networking service app. English on the Go was developed by the company’s founder and CEO, Mark Kim, who, along with a team of five other developers and executives spent two years working on the concept of the app prior to being presented to the public. In addition to Kim, the team was comprised of Timothy Ways, CFO, Minsoo Kim, CTO and iOS developer, Johnny Jin, server programmer, and James Choi, Android developer.

Mark Kim became interested in being part of a language revolution when he realized that a system that helped people learn English from their own smart phones could benefit more than one billion people around the globe. “More and more internet traffic is created on mobile devices, and language education can benefit by adapting to this new reality.”

The app makes it easy for English teachers to post lectures for English learners. Teachers can create, post, and share lectures on the mobile device wherever they are using their smart phone or similar device. Lectures are broken up into shorter and easier to understand formats which are focused around a particular theme. People learning the language are able to ask and answer questions which benefit not only those students, but also other students working on the lesson. Learners are able to share English expressions with others, as well as people who are following them to explain or ask for better understanding of those expressions. The user can select a theme of an English expression. This theme will be input each time the user logs in to the app until the user changes the theme. Users can find people to follow on the social network based on expressions and lectures they have posted. This creates a practical way to better learn the langue in its everyday use. Lectures and interesting or memorable expressions can be archived and kept in an electronic “notebook”. The developers have created an algorithm for English on the Go feeds that allow a user to be located and followed based upon their input of, and usage of, themes, followers, search history, and other metrics.

Google+ gets fully redesigned around Communities and Collections

Google yesterday announced that the Google+ experience is getting an overhaul. Effective immediately, Google+ has been given a full redesign based around Collections and Communities. In other words, this is not the social network or sharing tool launched a few years ago.

googleplus

Indeed, Google+ now caters to people with like-minded interests so that they can communicate, collaborate and have discussions around their favorite topics.

Collections let you immerse yourself in content about topics like surfing or tiny tilt-shift photography scenes. Communities enable groups of people with the same interests to join up and geek out on anything from Game of Thrones to Painting.

The new Google+ has already started for the web version and the mobile apps are falling in line as well. In addition to the new focus, Google+ is now easier to post to, search, and keep up with content. A big part of this comes from the redesigned homepage. According to Google, the change came about as a result of feedback from users and, presumably, from listening to industry trends.

To me, this is a smart move that separates Google+ from other social broadcast and sharing services. I get the sense that the user base cares more about coming together around topics instead of just updates and short-form blurbs.

The video game ‘outsiders’ creating VR art that makes you think

When Tale of Tales announced its departure from the gaming industry after 12 years of creating eccentric, cult-hit experiences, Twitter lit up with messages extolling the studio’s impact on the industry. However, for Tale of Tales co-founders Auriea Harvey and Michaël Samyn, it was a hollow farewell. Their latest (and last) game, Sunset, had debuted just a month before to poor sales and lagging interest, despite a successful Kickstarter campaign and positive critical reception. Harvey and Samyn were already contemplating an exit from the world of video games and Sunset‘s situation pushed them to make it official. “It often didn’t feel like games were worth the sacrifice,” Samyn says.

Now, Harvey and Samyn have returned to their pure, artistic roots — and to Kickstarter — with Cathedral-in-the-Clouds, a virtual reality exhibition of Christian art in the Gothic and Renaissance periods. We spoke with Samyn about following his passion and Tale of Tales’ lofty goals, and came away with a clear message: If you’re going to leave games behind for a project that resides firmly in the art realm, you might as well shoot for the clouds.

AVG is crowdfunding a router, but wait for its privacy policy

Chime

Antivirus company AVG is taking to Indiegogo to crowdfund a router called Chime that it believes will fix your home’s WiFi issues. Solitarily, a Chime is a fairly simple 802.11ac dual-band router. Used together, multiple Chimes can instantly band together and blanket your house in a strong signal by utilizing the same Mesh WiFi systems you’ll find in office buildings, malls and airports. It’s not the first company to offer Mesh WiFi to consumers — San Francisco startup Eero’s boxes ostensibly do exactly the same thing — but AVG believes the additional security features offered by Chime will be enough to persuade users to jump aboard.

Air Force torch cuts through locks like a hot knife through butter

The TEC Torch breaches a lock

Firefighters, police and soldiers don’t have many good options when they want to breach a door: blowtorches and lock picks are usually slow, while battering rams, explosives and guns aren’t exactly subtle. The US Air Force and EMPI recently crafted a far better solution, though. Their TEC Torch creates a brief but super-hot (5,000F) metal vapor jet that cuts through steel in less than a second, making short work of virtually any lock. In some ways, it’s like Star Wars‘ Qui-Gon Jinn cutting through doors with a lightsaber — it’s just faster and less dramatic.

Bing for iPhone makes it easy to jump from search straight to your apps

As Windows Phone continues to struggle, Microsoft has turned its focus towards making its trademark services like Office, Outlook and Bing available on Android and iOS. Today, the Bing app for the iPhone is getting a major update to better reflect how users want to search when on their phones, something that’s been an increasing priority for Google as well.

Ryan Gavin, Microsoft’s GM of search, says that when he thinks how about mobile search differs from the desktop, the traditional list of search results that can get you eventually to an answer to a query aren’t useful. “I just want an answer,” Gavin says, “and I want to take that answer into an action, typically with some sense of urgency.” To that end, Bing for iPhone puts the data from Microsoft’s Knowledge and Action Graph right up front, alongside deep links right into the apps on your phone that’ll let you complete the desired action using the tools you’re used to.
