Durex wants an official condom emoji to promote safe sex
Durex, one of the world’s top condom manufacturers, is asking the public to help them get an official condom emoji. An emoji is an ideogram which is a graphic symbol that represents an idea or concept and Durex wants to bring the practice of safe sex to the mainstream again.
World AIDS Day 2015 is on Dec. 1st, and Durex wants to promote safe sex by creating the first official condom emoji. Their research shows that emojis are a crucial part of how young couples communicate, and sex emojis are vital to sexual conversations. Durex also learned that there is apathy in engaging in safer sexual practices:
- 80% of 18-25 year olds find it easier to express themselves using emojis and more than half of respondents regularly using emojis when discussing sex
- 84% of 18-25 year olds said they feel more comfortable talking about sex using emojis
- More than one-third of 18-25 year olds claim not to care about safe sex and nearly half think that HIV will never affect them or their friends
What is AIDS?
AIDS is a syndrome caused by the HIV virus.4 It is when a person’s immune system is too weak to fight off many infections, and develops when the HIV infection is very advanced. This is the last stage of HIV infection where the body can no longer defend itself and may develop various diseases, infections and if left untreated, death.
There is currently no cure for HIV or AIDS. However, with the right treatment and support, people can live long and healthy lives with HIV. To do this, it is especially important to take treatment correctly and deal with any possible side-effects.
Basic facts about AIDS
- AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
- AIDS is also referred to as advanced HIV infection or late-stage HIV.

Durex is asking one million people to use and share the hashtag #CondomEmoji to show their support for the creation of the world’s first official condom emoji.
“Emojis of this sort will enable young people to overcome embarrassment around the discussion of safe sex, encourage conversation and raise awareness of the importance of using condoms in protecting against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV and AIDS.” – Karen Chisholm, Marketing Director, Durex USA
