UK lads mags FHM and Zoo to disappear from shelves
For many young men growing up in the nineties and early noughties, FHM and Zoo were the very definition of “lad culture.” Bedroom walls across Britain used to be filled with blu-tacked pages of scantily-clad models, but with sales dwindling, the time of the lads magazine is coming to an end. Bauer Media, owner of both brands, said today that the two men’s properties will cease publication at the end of the year.

$85 ASUS and Google Chromebit officially launched

It’s pretty understandable if you had forgotten all about the Chromebit, as it was announced by ASUS and Google all the way back in March this year. The little Chrome OS HDMI stick has finally arrived ready for sale, carrying a very modest retail price of just $85.
Ideas like the Chromebit have been done before, there are plenty of Android HDMI device that can turn your TV into an Android computer, for example. However, this stick is packing Google’s Chrome OS from the Chromebook range of laptops. The head of the stick can also swivel around, to neatly fit into some of the more difficultly positioned TV HDMI ports out there.
For hardware, the Chromebit is powered by a quad-core ARM Cortex-A17 based Rockchip 3288 SoC, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The dongle is compatible with 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and also comes with a USB port, for extra storage and whatnot. While not quite as powerful as Chromebook hardware, this should be good enough for all the web browsing basics, but I wouldn’t bank on much else. Don’t forget, you will need your own keyboard and mouse setup as well.

The Chromebit will be arriving at a number of US retailers, including Amazon, Fry’s and Newegg. The device is also heading to Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the UK at launch, with additional countries likely to follow in the future.
Metal framed Huawei Mate 8 caught on camera

We are gradually ticking away the time until the Huawei Mate 8 is officially unveiled and today we have another picture of the smartphone to tide us over. This time showing off the back of the handset.
Judging from the picture (above), the Huawei Mate 8 will come with a metal frame and the overall handset design looks to be quite thin. The material on the back cover is tougher to make out, quite possibly plastic, but we can clearly spot a circular fingerprint reader, much like the one used in the Huawei designed Nexus 6P. We can also see a micro USB port (no USB Type-C) and dual speaker grills on the bottom of the handset, although we don’t know if there’s a stereo setup hidden under there or not.
Previous rumors have hinted at some very high end specifications for the Mate 8. The phone is said to ship with HiSilicon’s new high performance Kirin 950 SoC, 3GB or 4GB of RAM depending on whether you opt for 32GB or 64GB of internal storage space, and a 16 megapixel camera. The display is rumored to be a 6-inch 1080p AMOLED panel, and there’s a 4,100mAh battery for plenty of juice.

The Huawei Mate 8 is expected to see an official announcement on November 26th, according to a teaser released by the company. What are you hoping for from the next super-sized Huawei smartphone?
[Deal] UK retailer Argos discounts the white 16GB Wi-Fi model of the Nexus 9 to just £149
With Black Friday fast approaching, it seems many retailers are trying to steal a march on their competitors by cutting prices early on electronic goods. In the UK, it doesn’t get much better than the HTC manufactured Nexus 9 16GB (white), which can be found heavily discounted from Argos for just £149 ($226), which is basically half price.
While the white Nexus 9 16GB is down to just £149, the black version is a tad more expensive at £199($302). Both devices are available to order online or in-store and for collection or delivery to your home depending on stock availability. In certain areas, you might be lucky enough to qualify for the Fast-Track same day delivery service as well.
The promotion runs until the end of today (November 17), so there isn’t too much time to decide. Oh, and if the price still isn’t low enough for you, you’ll also receive a £10 voucher to spend on your next purchase because the Nexus 9 16GB costs more than £100. This means that theoretically, you can get the white Nexus 9 16GB for £139 (by including the voucher).
Priced at just £149, the white Nexus 9 16GB is an absolute bargain and the perfect Christmas gift, especially when you consider its specifications and that it’s running the latest version of the world’s most popular operating system, Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Let us know if you plan on buying one.

5Gbps broadband is coming to Britain, for £399 per month

Words like “superfast” and “ultrafast” are thrown around all the time to describe home broadband in the UK. Of course, what we really want to know are the cold, hard numbers. Download and upload speeds, man. That’s why Gigaclear has us chomping at the bit with its latest announcement — 5Gbps broadband, which it’s trialling right now with a small batch of UK customers. If you’ve never heard of Gigaclear before, we don’t blame you. The company was founded in 2010 and only operates in 36 rural communities, spread across five English counties. You can check your postcode here, but the chances of you falling under its fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network are pretty slim. Even if you own one of the 10,000 homes with Gigaclear access, you’ll have to pay some serious cash for the faster speeds. The company will be charging £399 per month for homeowners and £1,500 for businesses when the trial expands to all Gigaclear customers next year. Got a Scrooge McDuck pile of cash in your basement? Otherwise, this is all just a pipe dream.

Volta Flyer is a solar-powered build-it-yourself toy plane
Kids have much, much fancier toys to play with these days. The Volta Flyer is one of them: it works kind of like a paper plane, except it’s made of sturdier materials and has a solar panel to keep it flying for at least 30 seconds. If the ToyLab team reaches its $39,000 goal on Kickstarter, backers who pledge $40 or more will get a kit comprised of a fuselage, motor and propeller, a thin silicon solar panel and stabilizers. Once the components are all pieced together — and this could take less than 20 minutes, ToyLab says — the plane can then be charged by holding it up to the sun for 90 seconds before hand launching it into the air. According to its campaign notes, ToyLab’s goal is to give kids “practical insights into STEM” by having them build the plane themselves… though there’s absolutely nothing preventing grown adults from getting their own.

MetroPCS’ new music streaming product doesn’t use up your data
If you’re a music-loving MetroPCS customers, you’ll want to know about this. The prepaid provider has just launched a new streaming product called “Music Unlimited” that gives you a way to access your subscriptions without going over your data cap. It’s pretty much a repackaged version of its parent company’s (that is, T-Mobile’s) Music Freedom and comes bundled with the provider’s $40, $50 and $60 plans. The carrier says it supports over 30 streaming services, including Apple Music, Pandora, iHeartRadio, Rhapsody and Spotify. In addition, MetroPCS has introduced a new feature called Data Maximizer — its T-Mobile counterpart is Binge On — that optimizes or crunches videos from select services, so you can watch much more without obliterating your data allowance. When these features go live on November 19th, the carrier will also boost its $40 and $50 plans with an additional 1GB of data and up its mobile hotspot’s tethering cap from 6GB to 8GB.

Nest’s latest thermostat comes to the UK with hot water controls
A month after its US launch, Nest’s third-generation thermostat has arrived in Britain. The hardware might look familiar, but it has a few extra tricks that separate it from previous versions and even its counterpart across the pond. For starters, Nest has given the circular design a nice little spec bump; compared to its predecessor, the thermostat has a larger (2.08 inches), brighter and pixel-dense (229ppi) display, making it easier to scroll through the interface with sleep-deprived eyes. The device’s entire body is also slightly thinner, meaning it should look just a smidge more attractive in a hallway or living room.
Apple Pay now supports TSB and Tesco Bank in the UK
Apple Pay is now firmly established in the UK, but since the service went live in July, a handful of banks have bided their time and left customers waiting for smartphone payments. Luckily, two more can be ticked off the list today after TSB and Tesco Bank confirmed they have enabled Apple Pay support for their payment cards.
