Vinyl is more lucrative than YouTube for UK music labels
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
YouTubers are pretty much the rock stars of the Internet, earning millions of views and presumably millions of dollars with every video they make (okay, maybe thousands). And with the number of views that some official music videos get on YouTube, you’d think they were raking it in too. According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), that’s not the case for UK music labels, saying that Vinyl is more lucrative than YouTube.
Now that sentence itself just seems ludicrous, though you can take it two ways – it could be the resurgence of vinyl as a viable medium for music sales, or that YouTube is just really not great income for music labels. Apparently part of the issue is how YouTube and its income is regulated in Europe vs how it’s done in the US, and without getting too political, it would seem BPI wants the situation in Europe to change. With the launch of YouTube Red, however, perhaps this will be a more sustainable form of income for the UK music industry.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge already in testing at AT&T
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
With Samsung launching its phablet devices earlier than usual this year, there have been plenty of suggestions that Samsung is going to announce its first 2016 flagship a little bit early as well. Giving credence to these suggestions is leaker @evleaks who has said American telco AT&T already has their hands on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge and is testing it.
AT&T already testing both Galaxy S7 variants (SM-G930A and -G935A), adding weight to rumors of an early- to mid-1Q16 release.
— Evan Blass (@evleaks) November 13, 2015
http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js This is just the latest puzzle piece in a picture that appears to be coming together even without Samsung having to say anything. One thing they have said, indirectly, that the Exynos 8890 is going to be in their flagship devices after Samsung announced their most powerful chipset yet last week. Somehow, the rumours are also suggesting that the Galaxy S7 is going to be 10% cheaper than the Galaxy S6 – how that’s going to be possible, we’ve yet to find out, but no doubt lots of people will be happy if it turns out to be true.

Apple’s Tim Cook says a converged MacBook and iPad won’t happen
Apple CEO Tim Cook isn’t sold on the Surface, and the company doesn’t plan on bringing together its MacBook or iPad into a single product like Microsoft’s computing device, either. In an interview with the Irish Independent, Cook said: “We feel strongly that customers are not really looking for a converged Mac and iPad.” This follows comments the CEO made in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, where he questioned why anyone would buy a PC — those comments were apparently aimed at Windows PCs, not his company’s own computer range. “We don’t regard Macs and PCs to be the same.”

MetroPCS website bug put the data of 10 million subscribers at risk
If a comprehensive security report created and published by renowned researchers Eric Taylor and Blake Welsh is anything to go by, it would appear that MetroPCS had a major bug embedded in its website until this month when it was found and fixed. The error made it easy for any user to gain access to sensitive information for over 10 million current and past subscribers. The only tool needed to get hold of this data was a phone number. Pretty scary stuff, huh?
At this point, there’s no evidence suggesting that anyone discovered the defect before the researchers did and accessed customers’ personal information, and now, thanks to Taylor and Welsh, nobody will be able to abuse the glitch to do so. I find it quite frightening just how many companies have been at the centre of data protection scandals this year, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon.

Lyft for Android updated with ‘colourful, directional cars’
Lyft has started rolling out a nifty new update for its official Android application via the Play Store. This upgrade makes it easier than ever to track your driver to get a feel for just how long he is likely to be, thanks to a new system the company has dubbed colourful, directional cars.
This feature essentially matches the car icon displayed in the app to the color and direction of your driver’s ride. The symbol is then displayed from a bird’s-eye view, showing the direction your taxi is headed in real-time — so you can instantly spot it as soon as it pulls up.
Installing the upgrade on your smartphone couldn’t be simpler. All you have to do is open up the Play Store, swipe in from the left-hand side of the screen, select ‘My Apps’ and click on ‘Lyft’, then hit the update button.

Computers learn how to spot hidden facial expressions
Machines are good at spotting obvious emotions like smiles, but they’re not so hot at detecting the extremely brief microexpressions that reveal when people are covering up their true feelings. They may have a keener eye in the future, though: researchers have developed a computer vision algorithm that magnifies facial expressions, making it possible to catch the tiniest bit of displeasure or surprise. While some humans have a knack for spotting these subtle cues, the algorithm is far more effective in early tests — you likely wouldn’t fool the computer into thinking everything was hunky dory.

Moto X Pure Edition to gain T-Mobile band 12 support with upcoming Marshmallow update
Last Thursday, we reported that Motorola had entered the initial development stages of the much-anticipated Android 6.0 update for a handful of its latest devices. Today, however, David Schuster, VP of Product Sales and Operations at Motorola, revealed that this upgrade is more than just a standard factory one. It will, in fact, transport compatibility for a new LTE band to one of the Lenovo-owned company’s smartphones.
Owners of the Moto X Pure Edition can expect to see support for T-Mobile’s 4G service (band 12) introduced when the update starts rolling out over the course of the “next few weeks”. Unfortunately, there’s no word on whether Wi-Fi Calling is included, but we suspect it will be seeing as it’s one of T-Mo’s core services, which attracts many customers.
So there you have it, folks. If you’re a T-Mobile customer who is undecided on whether to pick up a Moto X Pure Edition or not, this might just sway you. It’s a great phone that we’d advise you check out, but it’s certainly not for everyone. If you’re not a fan of high-end internals in a cheap, but durable frame, you’d best steer clear. If its something you’d don’t mind, though, then this is the device for you.

Thief caught selling smartphone on Craigslist – don’t let this happen to you!
A possibly profitable theft didn’t go very well for teenager India Carmouche from Slidell, Louisiana. After stealing a smartphone from a distracted customer at Walmart, who had left his gadget on top of a drink cooler while searching through other items, she quickly put the device up for sale on Craigslist. But she never expected the original owner to come across her listing while searching for a replacement handset (and he probably didn’t think he would see that, either).
Needless to say the victim quickly alerted the local police, an act which was followed by an investigation from an undercover officer pretending to be an interested customer. The potential buyer then revealed his identity as a police officer, to which the thief responded by running away, something that obviously never ends well. She was apprehended and arrested for possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.
These stories are always interesting, and we are glad to see the police is keeping up with the times and adopting new ways to stop theft in the tech realm. It’s a big step forward, and definitely a victory against an issue so many of us have suffered from.
“We quite frequently warn legitimate buyers and sellers about the dangers of Craigslist, but rarely do we issue a warning to criminals. So let this be a warning to all the criminals out there. You may also become a ‘victim’ on Craigslist when trying to sell stolen property.” -Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith
This specific event turned out to be victorious for the good guys, but keep in mind this will not always be the case. In fact, recovering a lost smartphone is a bit of an oddity. It has never happened to me or anyone I know, so you must be cautious to avoid being another victim.
After all, Lookout Mobile Security’s study shows that 3.1 million smartphones were stolen only in 2013, a number that happens to double the statistics from 2012. One in every 10 smartphones were stolen that year, and while we haven’t see more recent details, this proves that smartphone theft is a problem which should not be ignored.
How to stay safe from smartphone theft
Of course, you can always go back to our guide on recovering a lost/stolen smartphone, but that is not exactly what we will focus on today. Following this story’s nature, we would like to give you some tips on how to be a smarter used phone buyer and avoid buying stolen gadgets.
Remember, Android Device Manager is now a complete kill switch method, which means that stolen phones could be reported, locked and deemed unusable whenever the rightful owner wishes. In addition, people could report them lost to the carrier, which efficiently blacklists any mobile handset. You need to be careful with who you buy from! Let’s show you how to buy a used smartphone with little to no risk.
Buying tech on Craigslist
Remember, Craigslist is like the Wild West of trading. It’s not really monitored, and can be used with full anonymity. I could post anything in there, with very little evidence of who I am and how to contact me. I’m not saying Craigslist is a bad platform, but you definitely do need to be more careful.
If interested on buying any device, make sure to ask questions about the situation. Does it have a clean ESN? Why are you selling it? Do you have the original box and accessories? Answers to any of these questions can serve as red flags.

I also like meeting people at a very public place. Just don’t go into a dark alley with them. You should opt for a restaurant or store, but I usually go the extra mile and tell them to meet me at a carrier store location. I never give them a penny until I realize the phone is working and not blacklisted. And since we are already at the store, I can just tell any representative to check up on it. If you are not at the store, though, you can always call customer service to check if any phone is blacklisted or not.
The key is to not really trust everyone, which could be an uncomfortable feeling to many of you. This is why we only advice the adventurous to deal with expensive gadgets through this platform.
Buying tech on eBay
eBay has plenty of horror stories that would make any fire camp plenty entertaining, but the good thing about the popular online trading point is that the company has much more control over what’s going on. Customer support will always have your back and you can file any issues to get them resolved. In addition, eBay and PayPal have a full record on both buyers and sellers. Reviews and comments are also put in place, so it’s hard for a thief to just get away with things. Sure, eBay can be slow and a little unreliable sometimes, but it beats going with Craigslist.
Swappa!
Swappa is actually my favorite website for buying and selling used smartphones. It has a solid system! Users can easily report if someone is selling a stolen phone, altering ESNs or screwing you over in any shape or form. You will then get your money right back to your PayPal account, shall you report any issues.
But people are not the only ones doing all the work here; Swappa actually verifies every single listing, so there’s a much lesser chance of someone trying to rip you off or sell you a stolen device. And if it happens to be, you get your cash back. Simple, safe and clean.

Conclusion
I would honestly say eBay and Swappa are about the safest ways to deal with used smartphones, just because these sites have a better level of control with their sellers and buyers. If you really want to buy a used handset and stay on the safe side, we would advice that you stick with those two. And if you are willing to step into the wild side, just make sure you do your homework before handing out the money.
CyanogenMod 12.1 nightlies for the HTC One M9 finally arrive

Do we have any fans of CyanogenMod nightlies around here? How about HTC One M9 owners? Well, we are bearing good news for you today. It’s always nice to hear a new device is enjoying nightly support from the most popular 3rd-party ROM around, so today we are glad to let you know HTC‘s flagship phone has just started getting this treat.
The CyanogenMod team has uploaded the new files to their downloads page and now you can explore the nightly adventure with your shiny HTC One M9. Just head over to the website, download the software and install it.

By the way, remember that tinkering with your smartphone could be dangerous. You might end up with a bricked device. And to make matters worse, these procedures may void your warranty, leaving you in the dark if something goes wrong. Be careful and do your research!
Also – what the heck are nightlies?! These are considered experimental versions of a software that is under development. The CyanogenMod team will continue to update the code and upload the updated software on a daily basis.
Other HTC One M9 stories:
Users will be at the bleeding edge of the software’s advancement, and they will get to test all those nifty new features before others, but this does come with its repercussions. ROM nightlies are not for the faint of heart; you are likely to encounter bugs, which is why I really wouldn’t recommend this software to anyone who wants reliable stability.
Those who are adventurous will love playing around with CyanogenMod 21.1 nightlies, though! How many of you have been waiting for this to happen?
Apple Pay Launching in Canada With American Express on November 17
Apple Pay is expected to expand to its third market this week, launching in Canada this Tuesday, November, 17, reports iPhone in Canada. As previously announced, Apple Pay will be launching through an exclusive partnership with American Express, initially limiting the reach of Apple’s payments service in the country.
According to American Express, the service is set to launch this Tuesday, November 17, 2015. Customer service representatives we spoke with confirmed the date over the phone numerous times, and is in line with what you’ve told us as well.
As reported by The Globe and Mail last month, sources indicate Apple partnered with American Express in order to expedite the Apple Pay launch in the country, as discussions with the major Canadian banks and other credit card companies had been “dragging.”
Beyond Canada, Apple is also partnering with American Express to bring Apple Pay to Australia by the end of the year and to Spain, Singapore, and Hong Kong next year. Apple Pay launched in the United States alongside iOS 8 in September 2014 and expanded to the United Kingdom in July of this year.
