Apple Pay Launching in Canada With American Express on November 17

Apple Pay is expected to expand to its third market this week, launching in Canada this Tuesday, November, 17, reports iPhone in Canada. As previously announced, Apple Pay will be launching through an exclusive partnership with American Express, initially limiting the reach of Apple’s payments service in the country.

According to American Express, the service is set to launch this Tuesday, November 17, 2015. Customer service representatives we spoke with confirmed the date over the phone numerous times, and is in line with what you’ve told us as well.

As reported by The Globe and Mail last month, sources indicate Apple partnered with American Express in order to expedite the Apple Pay launch in the country, as discussions with the major Canadian banks and other credit card companies had been “dragging.”

Beyond Canada, Apple is also partnering with American Express to bring Apple Pay to Australia by the end of the year and to Spain, Singapore, and Hong Kong next year. Apple Pay launched in the United States alongside iOS 8 in September 2014 and expanded to the United Kingdom in July of this year.

MetroPCS site flaw exposed the data of 10 million subscribers

T Mobile MetroPCS

It’s not just hacks that put your personal data out in the open — sometimes, it’s just poor coding. Security researchers Eric Taylor and Blake Welsh have shown Motherboard a MetroPCS website bug that, until it was fixed this month, made it easy to get sensitive info for over 10 million subscribers. All you needed was a phone number to get a person’s home address, phone serial number and more. And if you weren’t picky, you could have whipped up a script to harvest all of the data within two days.

Apple Moving to 100% Renewable Energy in Singapore, Confirms New Retail Store

Apple today announced a deal to move all of its operations in Singapore to 100 percent renewable energy, working with partner Sunseap Group to take advantage of rooftops in the densely populated city-state for solar power generation, reports Reuters.

Starting in January, solar energy developer Sunseap Group will provide Apple with 100 percent renewable electricity from its portfolio of solar energy systems built atop more than 800 buildings in Singapore.

The deal will make Apple the first company in Singapore to run exclusively on renewable energy and marks a significant step in its bid to power 100 percent of its facilities and operations worldwide with clean fuel.

The Sunseap project, made possible through financing from Apple, will generate a total of 50 megawatts of solar power from rooftops, with approximately 33 megawatts going to Apple and the remainder being used for other customers including public housing.

As part of today’s announcement, Apple also confirmed it is working toward opening its first retail store in Singapore, although it did not provide a timeframe for the store’s opening.

Word of an Apple store in Singapore surfaced last month when fitness chain Pure Fitness announced its location in the Knightsbridge shopping center will be closing next month to make way for an Apple store planned to open in late 2016. Four other stores in the center are also moving out to help make room for Apple. The company began hiring for one or more retail stores in Singapore late last week.

Huawei can quick-charge your phone without hurting its battery

Huawei Mate S, P8 and Max

That fast-charging smartphone you just bought has a dirty secret: more likely than not, it’s reducing the lifespan or capacity of the battery to get that breakneck speed. Huawei doesn’t think you should have to compromise, though. It just showed off a lithium-ion battery whose graphite-coated anode (where current flows) allows for very quick charging without hurting either capacity or long-term longevity. How quick? With a 3,000mAh of the sort you’d find in a larger phone, Huawei can give you a 48 percent charge in just 5 minutes. Yes, you could have enough power for an evening out in the time it takes to change out of your work clothes. There’s an even faster prototype that reaches 68 percent in 2 minutes, although its 600mAh capacity isn’t practical at its size.

Unlocking the Nexus 6P bootloader will require a new command

nexus 6p review 2 aa (11 of 30)

The new Nexus handsets has been reaching plenty of hands lately, and we know many of you just can’t stick to the stock experience for long. It’s time to get hacking! One of the first steps to reaching your phone’s true capabilities is unlocking the bootloader, so we thought it was important to let you know the process is no longer the same for the high-end Nexus 6P.

A new flashing command was first introduced in the Android M Developer Preview package. The modifications were then introduced to Android AOSP, requiring users to input a new set of lines for unlocking their smartphones. With that in mind, the “fastboot oem unlock” command will no longer work with the Nexus 6P. The Nexus 5X does support both methods, but that will probably stop being the case as time progresses (more phones will likely continue to switch to the newer code).

What’s the new command, then? Firstly, there are two unlocking levels. The first is “normal”, which entails a basic liberation that allows for flashing custom recoveries, system images, boot images and more. The second method is a “critical” unlock, a level that will allow users to flash custom bootloaders. We assume most of you will stick with the first, but if you really need more freedom you can upgrade.

Do keep in mind that tinkering with your phone’s software, firmware or hardware may void your warranty and/or harm your device. Be careful and do your research before proceeding. Shall anything happen to your handset, no one will take responsibility for it but you, and you may be left in a bad (and expensive) situation.

With that said, let’s show you the new commands.

  • fastboot flashing unlock
  • fastboot flashing lock
  • fastboot flashing unlock_critical
  • fastboot flashing lock_critical
  • fastboot flashing get_unlock_ability

Happy tinkering!

Airbnb offers free stay for those affected by Paris attacks

For better or worse, Airbnb has revolutionized the hospitality industry, however there is no way you can argue with their latest move. To say the least, the Paris attacks have caused a lot of distress for those affected, and for some a place to stay in the city is not a guaranteed thing – that’s where Airbnb is committed to helping. If you check-in before November 17th, Airbnb is offering free stay to anybody who wants to stay in Paris, whether it be for family members who are looking for confirmation about their loved ones, or those who are stuck in the city due to closures – Airbnb is also waiving their service fee, and there don’t appear to be any other conditions besides checking-in before Nov 17th. Airbnb is also taking any offers from Paris residents to offer their place for people to stay for free.

Airbnb’s gesture is the latest in the online community’s pooling of efforts in helping the people of Paris during this harrowing time – there’s also Google offering free Hangouts calls, Facebook has offered its safety confirmation tool once again, and this is probably just the beginning of similar gestures from other large companies.

Roadmap of Android Marshmallow updates for Samsung devices has been leaked

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Samsung has always been sheepish when it comes to revealing when their devices will get software updates, so the responsibility of informing the masses usually falls to leaked information, as it has this time. In a leaked Samsung document, the roadmap for Android Marshmallow updates for Samsung devices has been revealed, including at what state their approval (presumably with Google) is at. Predictably, Samsung’s latest devices like the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ will be the first to be updated with the cutoff for updates sitting around the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Alpha.

Android Marshmallow updates for Samsung devicesPerhaps excitingly for Samsung owners, the dates listed are quite soon with the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ updates due for rollout in December of this year. Of course, the speed of the rollout will depend no what region you are in and is further affected if your device has carrier software on it as well. The document also details a second phase of updates which will be coming to Samsung’s Galaxy A and Galaxy E range of mid-range devices, though the timetable for this is unclear, and presumably Samsung can still change these plans on a dime. A third phase is also referred to, but that seems even less likely.

Airbnb helps Paris attack victims’ families find free places to stay

FRANCE-TOURISM-ACCOMMODATION-INTERNET-AIRBNB

Facebook isn’t the only internet giant offering a helping hand in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks. Airbnb has launched a portal that helps anyone affected by the attacks find (or offer) a free place to stay. If you’re determined to meet with a family member or got stuck in the city during border closures, you won’t have to pay a thing — Airbnb is waiving its service fees at the same time. You have to check in no later than November 17th, but that’s about the only condition involved.
