Ford first to test self-driving cars in Michigan’s fake city
The University of Michigan recently built the 32-acre “Mcity” proving ground so that automakers could test autonomous vehicles with zero risk to the public. Since the faux city is in US car country (and far from Silicon Valley rivals like Google), it’s only fitting that it was broken in by a small Dearborn outfit: Ford. The automaker tackled Mcity in its latest Fusion Hybrid self-driving car, freshly equipped with four LiDAR sensors for real-time 3D mapping. While Ford has tested its vehicles extensively on public roads, “every mile driven [at Mcity] represents 10, 100 or 1,000 miles of on-road driving in terms of our ability to pack in the occurrences of difficult events,” said U of M professor Ryan Eustice.
Three UK gifts customers free Deezer music subscriptions
Deezer’s music streaming service has been around for years, but its subscriber base is small compared to Spotify and newcomer Apple Music. Now, the company hopes to grow those numbers by partnering with a UK mobile network — but this time, it’s Three rather than Orange. New and existing customers on monthly and pay-as-you-go contracts, as well as SIM-only deals can get a free six-month subscription to Deezer Premium+. Usually this would cost £9.99 per month — the industry standard for an ad-free music streaming service — and is redeemable online starting today. The registration process is a little clunky, but presumably new Three customers will be walked through the process in stores.

Metal Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro spotted at TENAA

A Redmi Note 2 Pro handset has just been spotted passing through China’s TENAA, which looks set to be Xiaomi’s successor to the Redmi Note 2 that launched earlier in the year. This handset has been rumored to be heading to market for a while now, and the arrival at TENAA suggests that the time could be nearing.

The smartphone again looks to ship with a smooth metal body design and there appears to be space for a fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone, a first for Xiaomi. This metal casing seems to add a little weight and thickness to the handset though, coming in at 165g compared to the original 160g.
The listing also gives us a look at the Pro’s hardware specifications. They appear to be be the same as the 5.5-inch 1080p Redmi Note 2, so the handset will come with a MediaTek Helio X10 (MT6795) SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage space, a 3060mAh battery and a 13 megapixel rear 5 megapixel front camera combination.
We don’t have a launch date or price tag for the Redmi Note 2 Pro yet, but it is likely to cost slightly more than its predecessor. We can probably expect something in the region of 1,099 Yuan ($172) for the Pro variant, compared with 999 Yuan ($158) for the regular Note 2.
eBay deal: Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 5 for $550

Looking for a great deal on a new Samsung Galaxy Note 5? eBay has the answer, as a retailer is currently selling the Unlocked N920C variant of the smartphone for just $550.
The $550 price tag lops about $200 off the retail price offered by US carriers AT&T and T-Mobile. This N920C version comes with 32GB of internal memory, which is not expandable, and features a 5.7-inch QHD display, octa-core Exynos 7420 SoC, 4GB of RAM and a 16 megapixel rear camera.
As an added bonus, the seller will not only ship the handset out to US customers, but covers a huge range of extra countries around the world, for an extra shipping fee of course. Canada, United Kingdom, Denmark, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Estonia and Australia barely coveres a quarter of the countries on the list, so check out the shipping and handling details for the full list. Just be warned, there may be additional import charges in your country.

Amid royalty dispute with Qualcomm, Xiaomi Mi5 may pack MediaTek SoC
A new leak has claimed that Xiaomi’s new flagship phone – the Mi5 – will feature a MediaTek processor instead of the Snapdragon one, which was earlier rumored to power the device. A few weeks ago, we even saw the Mi5 benchmarked on the GeekBench database with the Snapdragon 820 SoC onboard.
But a new report has claimed that Xiaomi may have changed its mind about using Qualcomm’s latest chipset over royalty dispute with the company. Apparently, Qualcomm is not too happy with the royalty fees that Xiaomi is offering. And Xiaomi is known to keep the production costs to the minimum in order to keep the final price of the device as low as possible.
Rumors suggest that the royalty dispute with Qualcomm has forced Xiaomi to bring MediaTek on board. So far, we have only come across Mi5 prototypes featuring Snapdragon 820 but that may change soon if the budget mobile manufacturer fails to reach a truce with Qualcomm.
If that doesn’t materializes, Xiaomi may still sell some devices featuring Qualcomm’s chipset (because it won’t be feasible to scrap a whole new batch) and pack new handsets with MediaTek processors.
The report further states that Xiaomi may not be the only company to find itself on a collision coarse with Qualcomm. Lenovo could find itself in a similar situation soon.

ABC and Iliza Shlesinger are developing a comedy exclusively for Watch ABC
ABC in partnership with comedian Iliza Shlesinger has begun work on a new show that will be exclusive to the Watch ABC app. Shows designed exclusively for streaming services are becoming more common, as CBS just recently announced that a new Star Trek series will be exclusive to its All Access subscription service.
Watch ABC allows users to view new and previous episodes of content aired on ABC, as well as offering a livestream of the Disney-owned networks’ linear feed in some markets. Much of this content does require a TV subscription, which could potentially be a bad decision for ABC. While ABC isn’t offering its content as a standalone service, its competitors are. For instance, CBS recently announced that a new Star Trek series would be airing to its All Access subscribers exclusively.
Watch ABC’s requirement is rather strange, especially considering how quickly standalone streaming services are rising in popularity.
Exclusive content for Watch ABC will go beyond the stand-up comedy show being developed with Shlesinger, as ABC executives are hard at work making deals and partnerships to offer other exclusive content.
It’s also not clear yet whether this exclusive content will be under the paywall of Watch ABC yet. It’s still under consideration, as there’s some talk about offering it for free or whether it should be exclusive to its pay-TV subscribers. Another aspect under consideration is offering new episodes for free, but requiring previous episodes to be watched as a pay-TV subscriber.
Whatever ABC decides to do, at the heart of it is an initiative to make streaming services more common and easier to access, especially as consumers continue to prefer services like Netflix and Hulu over basic TV subscriptions.

Facebook Messenger could be getting self-destructing messages soon
Facebook could soon get self-destructing messages similar to that of Snapchat, according to a Facebook spokeswoman. This new feature will allow messages to disappear into thin air within an hour.
These self-destructing messages are currently under a trial run, being available to a select few users in France. Users will have the option of enabling and disabling the new feature by tapping an hourglass icon in the Messenger application.
Here’s what Facebook said in a statement to BuzzFeed:
“We’re excited to announce the latest in an engaging line of optional product features geared towards making Messenger the best way to communicate with the people that matter most. Starting today, we’re conducting a small test in France of a feature that allows people to send messages that disappear an hour after they’re sent. Disappearing messages gives people another fun option to choose from when they communicate on Messenger. We look forward to hearing people’s feedback as they give it a try.”
So, ephemeral text messages are coming to Messenger, but only if you want them enabled. It’s also not clear yet when this feature will roll out to all of Messenger’s 700 million users, if it will have a major rollout at all. Facebook is certainly considering this feature, and from the sounds of it, a global rollout will be dependent on the feedback they receive.
Messenger just recently received an update making it easier to share photos with friends and family.

Steam Controller gives disabled player one-handed ‘Skyrim’ controls
Valve’s Steam Controller, like PC gaming in general, is highly customizable. Whether you think its large, circular trackpads are an annoyance or a revolution, there are plenty of ways to tweak how they perform in-game. One thoughtful user, Chris Hepburn, has remapped the buttons in Skyrim to help a disabled player fully control their adventurer one-handed. The right haptic pad controls the camera, while tilting the controller up, down, left and right handles character movement. The right trigger is used both to attack and defend, depending on whether you tap or hold with your finger. The A, B, X and Y buttons have been left untouched, while tapping the left analog stick changes your immediate weapons. Hepburn says the control scheme works best with a cushion for support — reaching for the analog stick and waggling the controller can get a little tiresome otherwise. The Reddit community has suggested he make a left-handed alternative too — anything that makes games more accessible is a worthwhile endeavour in our books. Top work, Hepburn.
