Tentacular Spectacular: Octodad: Dadliest Catch Arrives on NVIDIA SHIELD

In Octodad: Dadliest Catch, a delightfully quirky adventure now available on NVIDIA SHIELD, players are cast as an octopus masquerading as a human being who happens to have a wife and a couple of kids. In order to hide his true nature, Octodad wears a suit, into which his various tentacles are stuffed. It’s your job to control his unwieldy limbs and you do so by moving each of his makeshift legs and one of his arms independently in an attempt to make him appear as human as possible.
The result is that Octodad flails around the game’s environments bumping into furniture, smashing objects, inadvertently getting stuff stuck on the suckers of his tentacles and causing mayhem. This, though, is the whole point of the game. Whereas other developers try to make their protagonists as effortlessly controllable as possible, here they have gone out of their way to make Octodad challenging to control.

Walking is a process of using two analog sticks to alternately move each leg-like limb forward while manipulating objects requires both sticks to maneuver Octodad’s arm. In any other game it would be extremely frustrating, but here it’s a fundamental part of the fun. For one thing it’s hilarious to see Octodad flailing around bumping into things while trying to achieve regular everyday ‘dad’ tasks like making breakfast for the kids, operating a barbecue or mowing the lawn. It’s unusual for a game to make you laugh out loud but Octodad’s slapstick behavior manages to achieve just that.

What’s more pleasing though, is the fact that after a short time, you will get Octodad under control and the various tasks before him become challenging, rather than frustrating. And that’s when you can begin to appreciate the game’s wonderful narrative. Octodad’s story is a delight. As well as seeing him struggle with his everyday family life, we also get to see how he got here in the first place through flashbacks. It’s a richly told tale that is tragic, touching and ultimately uplifting. It’s a lovely video game take on the trials and joys of family life and manages, somehow, to turn a deceitful cephalopod into an everyday hero we can all identify with. It’s also a great addition to the NVIDIA SHIELD’s rapidly growing library of games specifically optimized for the platform.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch is now available to download on Google Play for $4.99.

Samsung Gear VR coming to T-Mobile on November 27th

Just a few days ago we learned that Best Buy and a few other select retailers were now offering up the Gear VR for pre-order, with plans to start shipping on November 20th. Now T-Mobile has joined in as the first carrier to get into the action. T-Mobile will offer the Samsung Gear VR on November 27th both online and in select brick-and-mortar locations, priced at the same $99.99 you’ll find it elsewhere.
For those that haven’t followed the Gear VR’s development closely you might be a little confused. Hasn’t the Gear VR already been released? It’s true that two “Innovator Editions” have been released in the past, these models were geared towards earlier adopters and developers. These versions worked with a very limited number of handsets, but the latest version offers slightly better support.

The new Gear VR is consumer ready with many more apps, games, and services available out of the gate, including the likes of Hulu, Netflix, Vimeo, and Twitch. Device support includes the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, Note 5, and Galaxy S6 Edge+. Even better, the new Gear VR is priced at just $99, while previous editions cost a pricey $200.

Is there any clear advantage for getting the Gear VR through T-Mobile versus other retailers? Not really, but it’s always nice to have more options available.
‘Uncharted’ for beginners: My first romp with Nathan Drake
I am the 80 percent. Let me explain: Sony recently released a remastered collection of the Uncharted series for the PlayStation 4. The games were all critically acclaimed, with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves ranking among the best games of the last decade, but developer Naughty Dog says that 80 percent of PS4 owners have never played them. I’m part of that group, and I figured it was high time to catch up with one of the most lauded trilogies of the last decade. Now that I’m in the thick of Nathan Drake’s adventures, I’m going to answer one question: If you’ve never played Uncharted, are these games worth your time?
Variety: ABC is prepping exclusive content for its streaming service
CBS isn’t the only major network getting into the exclusive content game. According to Variety, ABC is planning to do the same. The programming will be available through WatchABC and the first show is said to be a scripted project starring stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger. You might remember Shlesinger from her Netflix specials. What’s more, the network doesn’t plan to use the new platform only as a means of keeping its properties to itself, but rather a testing grounds of sorts. If a show does well there, it could make the jump to primetime. If you’ll recall, WatchABC provides live TV broadcasts (in some markets) and access to both to new and past episodes of shows, some of which require a paid subscription. Details are scarce on how much of the new exclusive content will require a pay TV plan, but this report follows similar moves by other networks.

Fallout 4’s greatest asset is its color palette
Of all the ways Fallout 4 outshines earlier entires in the series, the way it uses color is perhaps the most apparent. The game is a vast improvement over its predecessors in one simple way: It’s loads more vibrant. In 2008’s Fallout 3, nearly everything in the post-nuclear apocalyptic Washington D.C. was a sickly shade of green, a deliberate choice by the developers at Bethesda Softworks to sell an omnipresent feeling of sickness and decay (it still persists in certain places here). B-team developer Obsidian Entertainment’s Fallout: New Vegas introduced a bit of chroma to its irradiated Las Vegas landscape in 2010, but it was still primarily a brown game. Bethesda’s triumphant return to the Wastes is what shakes the series’ palette up the most. As you’ll see in the gallery below, the use of vibrant colors and a tightly defined palette serves a couple of purposes here: It differentiates one room or Boston-area landmark from the next and keeps everything in Fallout 4 looking visually fresh.

ASUS’ $299 hybrid tablet is a good idea that’s past its prime
When ASUS launched the original Transformer Book T100 back in 2013, it had a relatively novel concept on its hands: a low-cost Windows tablet that could double as a laptop thanks to its included dock. The company clearly thinks it’s still a good idea, since it recently released the Transformer Book T100HA with more powerful guts and Windows 10. But does this concept still hold water in 2015, when 2-in-1 Windows laptops are commonplace and mobile tablets are increasingly powerful? I’ve been living with the T100HA for several weeks to find out, and the truth is that it’s no longer as sweet a deal as it once seemed. There are still many things to like about ASUS’ hybrid, but you’ll have to make some compromises that shouldn’t really be necessary in modern hardware. Slideshow-340742
KFC’s fried chicken delivery will have you licking your fingers in no time
If you’ve got a hankering for a bucket of the Colonel’s Original Recipe, KFC will now bring the goods to you. The purveyor of fast-food fried chicken is partnering with DoorDash to offer delivery. Once your order is placed via apps on Android, iOS or the web, DoorDash will make sure your $5 Fill Up or $20 Family Fill Up arrives in a timely fashion. Expect to pay a delivery fee between $5 and $7, though, and menu items will cost more than if you visited a physical location. KFC tapping DoorDash for its delivery service isn’t too surprising, as the delivery company already handles food drop-offs for Taco Bell which also falls under the YUM! Brands umbrella. KFC delivery is available now in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Orange County with expansion to other markets expected in the coming months.
