Amazon Prime Video finally comes to UK Roku boxes

Roku Amazon UK Boxes

If Amazon wants its Prime Video service to properly compete with Netflix, it needs to be available on every major set-top box. Period. Today, the company is inching closer to that goal with some long overdue support for Roku hardware in the UK. Exactly why the “channel” has taken so long to cross the pond is unclear — it’s been available on US Roku boxes for years — but it’s a welcome addition nonetheless.

The Snapdragon 820 debuts tomorrow with a Q&A session on Twitter

LeTV-Snapdragon-820-Teaser

On Thursday, Tim McDonough at Qualcomm announced via Twitter that the Snapdragon 820 would be debuting on November 10th (tomorrow). This is the chip that will probably be the market’s benchmark for top-of-the-line processing power for 2016, and its forerunner, the Snapdragon 810, was plagued with rumors of overheating.

The rumor mill was in full churn for most of the year: “The 810 runs a little hot.” “No, the 810 is just fine.” “No, the 810 sets phones on fire.” “Well, that may be, but it’s a controlled burn.” “No, the 810 is literally the surface of the sun, sell all of your stock in Qualcomm immediately!” “Okay, can we please all just take a reasonable perspective on a product that is still in development?

The Snapdragon 820 was announced in August, but we haven’t gotten a whole lot of specific details about it since then. It is speculated that the Snapdragon 820 will be powering the Samsung Galaxy S7. If you’re intrigued, McDonough will be fielding questions starting tomorrow at 12:15 pm EST, shortly after the 820’s debut.

Since debates about the Snapdragon 810’s inherent flammability have not yet been put to rest, we expect that a fair number of the questions McDonough will need to field will have to do with the issue of overheating.

As for the actual specs of the Snapdragon 820, we’ll have those for you tomorrow after the release. Be sure to check back.

Supreme Court dismisses appeal based on warrantless phone search

Thief using a stolen mobile phone

It’s hard to forget a name like Quartavious Davis, but let us remind you anyway: he was sentenced to 162 years in prison with no possibility of parole for a number of armed robberies in Miami. His target locations included big name outlets, such as Walgreens and Wendy’s. Now, the Supreme Court’s nine justices have rejected the appeal he filed — based on the fact that feds obtained his phone data without a warrant — to overturn his conviction. As you may have guessed, authorities used his phone data as evidence in court, showing that his device connected to cell towers near the target locations when they were robbed to make and take calls.

For the first time since the release of both the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, Google’s USB Type-C cable is now back in stock on the Google Store. For $13 with free shipping, the wire is great value and is a must-have for anyone who’s looking to connect their shiny new Nexus device to a computer seeing as the cable that comes at standard in the box isn’t compatible.

Xiaomi just released a 20,000 mAh Mi power bank with Quick Charge 2.0 for $24… AND a fitness band for $15

mi_band_1s_xiaomi

Xiaomi may have outdone themselves with this one. Their phones and accessories are pretty well-known for offering insane quality for the price tag, but this might set a new bar.

The new 20,000 mAh Mi power bank can be fully charged in five hours, and with its six-pack of 3,350 mAh LG/Panasonic high-capacity cells, it has the potential to fully recharge your phone four times before it needs a boost itself. All for the low, low price of $24.

One Redditor joked that you could almost string a bunch of these babies together and create a cost-efficient Tesla Powerwall competitor.

Although not many specifics are known about the device, it appears to have the same slender, high-quality design we saw in the 10,400 mAh predecessor. It’s a bit heavier than the previous model, weighing in at 338 grams, but that’s an understandable attribute considering its increased power density. We expect it to have an array of LED power indicators and at least 2 USB ports, but stay tuned for more concrete details as they arrive.

The question on everyone’s mind is: “Where can I get one?”

Unfortunately, if you’re outside of China you can expect to pay a hefty chunk for shipping. The power bank looks like it’s available for pre-order on BuyGou, but you might want to keep an eye on AliExpress as well.

That Mi line of products is pretty crazy. You might think this is the latest in a long line of jaw-droppingly inexpensive devices, and you’d be wrong. It’s at least the second-latest.

Yep. Only hours after Xiaomi released the new Mi power bank, they brought out the Mi Band 1S, a water-resistant fitness wearable that will cost you $15.

Like its forerunner the Mi Band, the 1S is compatible with both Android and iOS. It tracks heart rate, counts calories and steps, monitors your sleep, and will survive for up to half an hour under a meter of water if you try to drown it. All at a fraction the price of its similar competitors.

Again, the Mi Band 1S will be releasing exclusively in China this week, and there’s no word yet on where to pick one up overseas.

Time Warner Cable’s Roku TV test starts in NYC for $10 per month

Roku 3 streaming player with remote

We’ve been telling you about Time Warner Cable’s plan to test streaming TV for its internet-only customers since before it was officially announced, but now customers can actually sign up for it. If having a cable box is part of what you hated about cable TV, now internet customers can get access to the TWC TV app on a variety of devices without adding a box or having a tech come out. During the trial, testers will get a free Roku 3 player, and the cheapest plan (with channels like ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and TBS among the 20+ included) starts at just $10 per month on a 12 month contract . Adding Showtime and Starz doubles the price, and testers can get a pretty healthy package with channels like Disney and ESPN for $50 per month. As we detailed when it announced, there’s no DVR with this setup, but it is an easy way to get TV without some of the hassles. The main drawback here? Unlike something like Sling TV, this is only available to Time Warner Cable customers, and during the test it’s only in NYC — check out the site for all the details.

Pinterest for Android updated with new ‘visual search’ feature

Pinterest-logo

Pinterest is rolling out a rather nifty update for its official Android application via the Play Store. In terms of added functionality, the upgrade brings a brand new visual search field to the app, which enables users to identify individual items within a pin.

How many times have you scrolled through your feed and seen a photo of a room containing an object that you’d really like to find out more about? Well now you can. Just tap the search tool in the right-hand corner and the application will automatically label the item, as well as present you with all the information it knows about it, including a purchase link.

To install the update on your Android-powered smartphone or tablet, simply open up the Play Store, toggle the hamburger menu by swiping in from the left-hand side of the screen, select ‘My Apps’ and click on ‘Pinterest’, then hit the update button. Alternatively, you can hit the link below to initiate the download on your smartphone from the Web.

‘Painless’ dental cavity procedure regrows tooth enamel

Little girl is having her teeth checked by dentist

When a dentist says the word “cavity” a lot of people sweat thinking about painful injections and relentless drilling. But scientists in Britain have developed a new procedure dubbed EAER, or “Electrically Assisted Enhanced Remineralisation,” that can repair a slightly decayed tooth before a deep cavity forms. The supposedly painless procedure involves cleaning (not drilling) the tooth of any signs of mild decay, then flushing it with minerals and stimulating it with an electric pulse. This pushes the minerals into the deepest part of the lesion and speeds up a naturally occurring process called “remineralization”. This is where minerals in your saliva and some foods enter the tooth enamel and make it stronger.

Lara Croft GO gets discounted to celebrate release of new Tomb Raider game

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Rise of the Tomb Raider is releasing on consoles and PC tomorrow, and to celebrate this release Square Enix has discounted Lara Croft GO by 60% – note that the discount may vary depending on your region. If you’ve never heard of Lara Croft GO, it’s a unique puzzler that adopts a turn-based gameplay not unlike checkers or chess. In this way, as our protagonist Lara Croft, you’ll need to make your way through perilous environments and avoid enemies along the way.

While I can’t vouch for Lara Croft GO, if it’s anything like its spiritual predecessor Hitman GO – and I think it is – then the game should be one of the best puzzle games available on mobile right now. The ratings on the Play Store also seem to suggest this with Lara Croft GO commanding an average score of 4.7 out of 5. Note that this deal only lasts for today, so if you want to make the most of it, the link to the Play Store page is down below:
