Contribute to cancer research while you sleep with DreamLab
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Without massive improvements in battery technology, most of us are going to be charging our devices every night, and while our devices are charging overnight they’re generally doing nothing – but what if we could put our devices to work while we are asleep? That’s exactly what one app, DreamLab, is aiming to do. DreamLab is a collaboration between the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the Vodafone Foundation in Australia and wants to use your phone to help solve problems to contribute to cancer research.
By downloading and keeping the DreamLab app running overnight, people can contribute to research for breast, ovarian, prostate of pancreatic cancer. In the app, you’ll have a choice of contributing downloads over Wi-Fi (250MB, 500MB or 1GB over a month) and/or mobile data (50MB, 250MB or 500MB over a month), and the app will only run while your device is plugged into AC and is above 95% charged. In doing this, you’ll help accelerate the research happening at the Garvan Institute – it’s estimated that 100,000 devices running the app will allow the Institute to process data 3,000 times faster.
Of course, the app is completely free to run, and if you’re on the Vodafone Australia network, the mobile data won’t even count towards your quota. To download the app and start contributing, hit the Play Store link below to see what it’s all about:

HTC is offering up to 30 percent off all online sales, today only

HTC has kicked off its Holiday Deals today with tiered discounts that apply to all products purchased through HTC’s online US store today.
HTC has three tiers, you can save 15 percent if you spend at least $200, 20 percent when you spend $400 and a 30 percent saving is applied if you spend $650 or more. The deal applies to all HTC products available through the website, including the new One A9 handset. The discounts are calculated from your total spend at checkout, so you can pick up a few things if you want.
As an example of some of the things you can buy, the flagship One M9 sees its price reduced from $649 to just $454.30 after the 30 percent saving (it’s nice to see HTC giving us the $1 benefit there). The newly released HTC One A9 normally costs $500 now, but the 20 percent saving means that it falls back down to $400. If you’re after a tablet, there’s also a 20 percent discount on the Nexus 9. It can be yours for as little as $339.

ZTE Blade S7 is official: 5-inch Full HD, metal/glass build, and dual 13MP cameras

ZTE is back with another “premium mid-ranger,” the selfie-centric Blade S7.
Following the well-received Blade S6, launched in February, ZTE now ups the ante with better specs and premium build materials. Where the S6 had a plastic build, the Blade S7 comes with an aluminum frame and 2.5D Gorilla Glass on the front and back.
The LCD display is still 5 inches, but resolution has been bumped up to 1920 x 1080, for an excellent 445 PPI and a 72.1% screen to body ratio.
That ratio could have been higher, but ZTE opted to mount a rectangular fingerprint sensor in the home button on the front. The squared design of the sensor looks a little out of place, but the functionality it enables may be worth it. Besides the standard unlocking feature, the sensor controls access to encrypted files and lets you create shortcuts to several apps.
The ZTE Blade S7 features a Snapdragon 615 processor, which has become a standard for upper mid-range devices launched in the past months. There’s 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.

The big story here are the two 13MP cameras, a feature that is only matched by Sony’s Xperia C5 Ultra. The selfie camera comes with phase detection autofocus, a dedicated flash, and no fewer than 14 beautification options – now that’s progress. On the back, the shooter features laser autofocus for fast and clear shots in lower lighting conditions.
ZTE’s MiFavor skin is back in its 3.2 iteration. This Android 5.1.1 Lollipop-based UI draws heavy inspiration from iOS, which is rather typical for Chinese smartphones targeted at the Chinese market. In terms of added functionality, ZTE boasts Magic Gestures, which is an Oppo-like shortcut drawing feature, as well as various gestures for common tasks like muting the device or launching the camera.
The Blade S7 will be available in Lemon Green, Rose Gold, Diamond White and Space Gray. The device will first go on sale in Thailand, with more Asian markets to follow. No word on whether the device will ever be available in other parts of the world.
ZTE hasn’t announced an official price of the Blade S7, but the phone has already gone up for pre-order at various Chinese retailers for around $280.

Almost every London Underground station now has WiFi

In case you hadn’t noticed, Virgin Media is still expanding its WiFi service on the London Underground. The company says it’s recently flicked the switch at 100 new stations, including end-of-the-line stops like Edgware, Cockfosters and Stanmore. That brings its grand total up to 250 stations, which is only 20 shy of a complete roll-out. That’s if you’re only counting the stations themselves, anyway. It’s still basically impossible to connect to the service while you’re actually on a train, hurtling down a tunnel. That hasn’t stopped people from connecting while they’re on the platform or waiting to depart though — Transport for London (TfL) says daily data consumption has jumped from 3TB to 20TB over the last 12 months, with more than half a million devices logging on each day. It’s not perfect, but it’ll do until there’s finally 3G and 4G coverage below the surface.
A university is digitizing thousands of wax cylinder records
The University of California, Santa Barbara has an alternative for those whose unusual musical needs can’t be fulfilled by Spotify and similar services. Its library has been digitizing cylinder recordings of 19th to 20th century music, and so far, the official UCSB Cylinder Audio Archive website already has 10,000 tracks you can stream. The library’s latest addition to that pile is comprised of 150 two- to four-minute recordings of Everlasting celluloid cylinders. The cylinder format, which looks like an empty toilet paper roll, is a type of recording medium before the more familiar phonograph record overtook it in popularity.

The Big Picture: The world’s most powerful x-ray laser
This is a photo of the Linac Coherent Light Source or LCLS — an x-ray free-electron laser in Stanford University’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. It’s also dubbed as the most powerful x-ray laser in the world. The SLAC Lab took a group of amateur and pro photographers on a tour of its facilities, giving them the chance to shoot photos of both the LCLS and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) for a contest. This image captured by Nathan Taylor is one of the top three entries taken by people from the group and will be submitted to this year’s Global Physics Photowalk, which aims to show behind-the-scenes photographs of the world’s leading particle physics laboratories. You can see all the winners, including another winning picture by Daniele Fanelli that features toy dinosaurs, along with the other entries that got honorable mention on SLAC’s website.

SceneSkim movie app does exactly what it says it would
As much as I love watching movies, I’m not doing it for work and don’t really need to worry about finding a specific scene or line of dialogue as fast as possible. But I’m not a film scholar or student, so those folks have it a little tougher when it comes to such matters. To that end, researchers have at the University of California Berkeley have developed SceneSkim. It’s a bit of tech that leverages captions, scripts and plot summaries to speed up searching for scenes in flicks rather than manually fast forwarding or rewinding. There’s a video of it in action below and it looks pretty slick, actually and should be a boon for the people who need quick access to specific movie scenes.

40 years later, Sony finally kills Betamax
Betamax: the punchline for over a decades-worth of VHS-center comedy bits and most format wars. However, Sony’s Beta cassettes can still be bought in Japan. Just about. Sony’s announced that it’s finally, finally, finally stop selling the cassettes. No need to rush to Tokyo just yet, as you still have until next March to buy-up all the Betamax supplies you’ll never need — including a cleaning tape. It’s also dropping its MicroMV camcorder tapes In a bid to… make space in the warehouse, we guess.
