Syllable A6 Bluetooth Earbuds: Great sound and design for less than $40 (Review)

Wired headphones have been mainstream for over fifty years, with wireless headphones having only recently becoming more popular. Battery technology and streaming rates simply could not match the quality and ease of a wired set. In the last few quick years you can now find wireless headsets at very affordable prices. The Syllable A6 Bluetooth earbuds separate themselves from from the rest of the pack with a magnetic clasp to keep your headset available and safe around your neck even when not in use.

Design

The Syllable A6 Bluetooth earbuds employ a magnetic clasp to create an almost necklace-like earbud experience. The volume, play/pause, and track controls hang comfortably from the earbuds like a tiny pendant just below your neck. This unique necklace design makes it very easy to find and use the controls and also find the earbuds to put them in your ear if you have taken them out. By moving the battery to the center cable, the earbuds are designed to be much smaller than the competition.

Usage

I spent a good week using these bad boys on a daily basis, and my only complaint is the battery life is rated over three hours. That works great for the length of my exercise routine and nightly walks with my dog, but falls short for all-day listening.  These earbuds are so convenient that I wouldn’t take them off at all. The Syllable A6 headphones are super light-weight and the necklace style neck band makes them really easy to leave on without bothering my neck.

They stayed comfortably in my ears throughout my workout with the clasp only becoming undone when I would take off or put on my hoodie. The clasp really is a game changer, making it nearly impossible to have the entire headset fall off/get lost. As battery life continues to improve in the headset field I really do hope that more earbuds elect to mimic this clasping design.

The sound of these earbuds was surprisingly good. Considering the Syllable A6 Bluetooth earbuds cost less than $40, the sound quality and features easily outperform the price tag. These aren’t reference style earbuds for enthusiasts, but the music that came through was very “fun”. The bass wasn’t too strong, but the mids and highs were very clear giving these earbuds a nice and balanced sound signature.

The Syllable A6 Bluetooth earbuds also have a built-in inline mic for taking calls. I found this feature to be very useful when I was working in my lab and had to take a conference call. The sound came through loud and clear and the recipient on the other end heard me equally as well.

A nice benefit from having a magnetic clasp is I found myself sticking my A6 earbuds to the fridge to help prevent loss. Earbuds are really easy to misplace and I loved this side benefit.

Pinterest’s visual search tool can identify items in a pin

Lots of people turn to Pinterest for inspiration, but it can be a hassle to figure out who makes that whiskey barrel table. Now that the site has buyable pins and shopping pins, it has launched a visual search tool to make it easier to find (and buy) that thing you saw. The tool is dead simple to use — when you see an object in a scene, like the light fixture shown above, you just select the search tool and draw a box around it. If it’s in Pinterest’s database, it’ll show you the name and where to find it, then let you buy it directly from retailers like Neiman Marcus or Macy’s, if available.

18 ways to (nearly) die with Lara Croft, Tomb Raider

Lara Croft is basically a superhero. She leaps with the power of someone bitten by a radioactive kangaroo, climbs sheer rock faces like her hands are coated in glue and spontaneously zip-lines down hundreds of ancient, convenient ropes like she’s strolling down to Starbucks on a Monday morning. In Rise of the Tomb Raider, players will most certainly die a few times, whether in firefights with hordes of gunmen, while running across a rapidly crumbling sheet of ice or jumping across gigantic crevasses. What’s incredible (and absurd) is all of the times Lara Croft survives.Slideshow-339802

Portable particle accelerators may soon become reality

The basics behind the portable particle accelerator concept

Modern particle accelerators are big, to put it mildly — even the smallest ones tend to occupy large rooms. Researchers at the University of Maryland, however, have found a way to shrink them down to where they’re genuinely portable. By shooting plasma with a laser pulse in such a way that they intensify the pulse and create a wake, the scientists can accelerate electrons to near the speed of light without using nearly as much energy as current machines (just millijoules for every blast). With this technology, you’d need so much less equipment and power that you could fit an accelerator on a cart.

Xiaomi teases press event to be held on November 11

Xiaomi_Mi5_teaser_November_pressevent_110815_1Leading Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Xiaomi, has begun teasing a press event to happen on November the 11th.

November 11th could be the day Xiaomi unveils its much-anticipated Mi 5 handset as well as some other cool gadgets that are expected. The reason for the anticipation is the rumored Snapdragon 820 chipset that has popped up in recent rumors and leaks. This could be the first time we hear specific details regarding Qualcomm’s new chipset, which will be among the most popular processors on future Android smartphones.

The teaser image shows a handset with a curtain over it and a question mark, indicating the company may have a new name for it. But time will tell what exactly it is that Xiaomi has planned for us. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below.

John Chen reveals that BlackBerry has a range of products to launch after the Priv

BlackBerry_Priv_Android_smartphone (2)

During an exclusive interview with Fox Business, BlackBerry’s CEO John Chen disclosed that the Canadian company already has a range of products in the pipeline that are scheduled to launch soon after the Priv. It’s unclear, though, whether the new handsets will run BlackBerry 10 or Android, but we assume the latter seeing as the manufacturer has to sell 5,000,000 devices just to turn a profit and stay afloat. If the firm fails and sales aren’t quite up to scratch, it will be forced to abandon the hardware industry altogether.

Google is giving away three free movies to all Chromebook owners

google_play_movies_tv_chromebook

If you’re the proud owner of a Chromebook, you may want to boot it up, head over to Play Movies & TV and check the dedicated promotions section of the application as Google is now giving away three complimentary films from a limited selection to all owners of a Chrome OS-powered device. Unfortunately, the movies are only available in Standard Definition (SD), but it’s still a pretty sweet deal nonetheless.

The list of films available varies depending on the device accessing the Play Movies server and area that it’s located in, but a rough outline of what you’ll be able to choose from can be seen below:

  • Mission Impossible
  • Mission Impossible II
  • Mission Impossible III
  • Mean Girls
  • Clueless
  • Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
  • Footloose
  • Flashdance
  • Forrest Gump
  • The Spongebob Squarepants Movie
  • The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water
  • The Last Airbender
  • Charlotte’s Web (2006)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

All-in-all, some pretty solid choices. As a film lover, I’d recommend going with either the Mission Impossible trilogy or Forrest Gump, The Last Airbender and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014).
