The current top runners on the rumor circuit are the Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship and the Redmi Note 2 Pro. The former is rumoured to come with a Snapdragon 820 or Helio X20 SoC, 4GB of RAM and a 5.3-inch QHD display, along with a few other high end features. However, another recent rumor suggested that Xiaomi may not launch its Mi 5 flagship until early in December, and the Snapdragon 820 is not expected to arrive in devices until next year, so take this rumor with a pinch or two of salt.
The Redmi Note 2 Pro, the second rumored handset, is expected to share the same internal components as the existing Redmi Note 2, but with a fingerprint scanner and a metal build added in. This would make it more of a mid-range handset, but the phone still comes with an octa-core SoC, 13Mp rear camera and 1080p 5.5-inch display. A similarly named handset called the Redmi 2 Pro also recently appeared at the FCC in the US.
Xiaomi has released plenty of new smartphones and a few surprises already this year, so it feels that almost anything could be on the cards at this point. Fortunately, we don’t have long to wait to find out what Xiaomi has hidden behind that curtain.

Tag Heuer Connected races into Android Wear market with official launch
Tag Heuer officially unveiled their Android Wear powered smartwatch today, the Tag Heuer Connected, and started accepting orders on their online store. Tag Heuer is selling the smartwatch for a whopping $1,500 retail. Currently 7 different colors are available for the band, though only black is currently available online. To go with the band colors and workmanship of the unit itself which is constructed with a titanium case and sapphire glass, buyers will get a set of special Tag Heuer digital watch faces. Tag Heuer has indicated in previous statements that part of their goal was to produce a digital smartwatch that looked like and represented their traditional watches, a goal that it appears they have achieved.
The Tag Heuer Connected comes with an Intel processor running at 1.6GHz, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of onboard memory. The display is a LTPS LCD display that is 1.5-inches in diameter running at 360 x 360 resolution, yielding 240 ppi. The watch part is 46 mm with a thickness of 12.8 mm and weighs 52 gm. Powering the device is a 410 mAh battery. Besides being able to run the normal variety of Android Wear supported apps available from the Play Store, the smartwatch comes with a built-in stopwatch, timer and alarm that Tag Heuer refers to as “microapps.” The device is also capable of monitoring wind direction and weather.
If you are interested in what is being described as the world’s first luxury watch powered by Android Wear, Tag Heuer has a dedicated web site at http://www.tagheuerconnected.com where you can get more information, place your order, or find the nearest retail store where you can buy one of these smartwatches.

Opera Max can now be found preinstalled on devices from 14 OEMs
It looks like your smartphone could have yet another pre-installed application on it, as Opera today announced that its data-saving application Opera Max can now be found installed on handsets from 14 OEMs. After today’s announcement, Opera is expecting to see Opera Max on over 100 million Android-based smartphones by 2017. That’s an impressive number, but just how useful will Opera Max be to consumers? Or will it be shoved away in a folder somewhere, along with the other masses of bloatware?
Opera created a handy video explaining how Opera Max work, but the gist is that Opera Max grab traffic coming to your phone and routes it through Opera’s servers, where a handful of data-saving techniques are applied. This could include compressing images on a web page or optimizing HTML and CSS. Opera says these techniques could bring down regular data consumption by nearly 50 percent, while bringing down power user consumption by nearly 60 percent.
Click here to view the embedded video.
Opera in the past has had 11 partners bringing Opera Max to smartphones, but the latest to join in this partnership is Acer, Hisense, and TWZ. That means you can now find Opera Max preloaded on smartphones from those three manufacturers, along with Cherry Mobile, Evercoss, Mobiistar, Fly, TWZ Micromax, Oppo, Prestigio, Samsung, Symphony, and Xiaomi.
There are obviously some privacy concerns with Opera Max routing all of your traffic through Opera’s own servers, but they have yet to be addressed.
Opera Software has been experiences some downfalls in revenue, and as a result, the company is considering looking for a buyer. With that in mind, there’s no telling what the future is for Opera Software’s many products.
Have you used Opera Max before? What are your thoughts on data-management services like this?

Google explains why some Nexus 5X pictures are the wrong way up
If you recently splashed out on a brand spanking new Nexus 5X, you might be wondering why some of the images you take aren’t the right way up. It turns out that it’s a quirk of how the device was manufactured, thanks to a little insight from Google’s Eino-Ville Talvala. After users began to complain about the issue on Reddit, the engineer popped up to explain where the problem comes from, and how to fix it.

TAG Heuer’s Connected is a $1,500 Android Wear watch you can trade in
Before we kitted them out with high-res AMOLED screens and WiFi, luxury watches were the sorts of thing you could wind up and pass down through the ages. With its new Connected smartwatch (seriously, its name is “Connected”) TAG Heuer thinks it’s captured “eternity in a box” and restored a sense of legacy to an otherwise obsolescing wearable. Erm, we’ll see about that. Long story short, it’s a $1,500 Android Wear watch that you’ll be able to trade in for a mechanical version after two years if the whole connected lifestyle really isn’t for you.

Google is giving “smart pills” to the world

Google is open-sourcing TensorFlow, the “secret sauce” behind features like intelligent image recognition in Google Photos or the Smart Reply feature that arrived to Inbox last week.
Announced today, TensorFlow is a set of free tools for machine learning applications. Or, in technical terms, “an open source software library for numerical computation using data flow graphs.”
The math involved is very high level, but the name TensorFlow comes from the flow of a tensor (a type of vector) through a graph, where nodes are typically mathematical operations or endpoints, and edges represent the relationships between nodes.
Google is giving away TensorFlow by licensing it under the Apache 2.0 license. That means anyone can use it, from academics, to independent developers, to Google’s biggest competitors.
As Matt Cutts, the head of webspam at Google puts it, Google is handing out “smart pills” to anyone who wants them.
Google handing out free (open source!) smart pills world-wide by giving away TensorFlow. https://t.co/fbRCQhgDDm https://t.co/1WkSyTpTNX
— Matt Cutts (@mattcutts) November 9, 2015
Machine learning is a foreign concept to most people. But for the last few years, machine learning has been making a real impact on products that we user every day. Among other things, AI algorithms have improved, or made possible, features like:
- Better web search results
- Google Photos’ image recognition
- Better real-time translations
- Improved thumbnails on YouTube
- Improved voice recognition on Google Now
TensorFlow is behind these features, and now Google is giving it away.
See also: What is machine learning?
The software is scalable, and can run on everything from a single smartphone to an entire data center. TensorFlow is ready for deployment in real applications, so this is not just a research tool.
Matt Cutts says it will spawn entire new industries.
Why is Google open sourcing this extremely valuable resource? The company says it hopes that freeing TensorFlow into the wild will help advance machine learning as a whole. The ecosystem will develop much faster, and that, in turn, will benefit Google. It’s somehow similar with what Google did with Android and several other open source projects.

Samsung rumored to launch an entry-level fitness tracker

Samsung is no stranger to the wearable market. Starting off with it’s first wearable, the Galaxy Gear, back in 2013, Samsung’s smartwatch/fitness tracker portfolio has grown immensely over the years. By now it’s pretty clear that the company is committed to bringing wearables of all shapes and sizes to market, especially if this new rumor proves to be true.
According to the folks at SamMobile, Samsung has an entry-level fitness tracker in the works that could cost much less than you’d think.
The wearable that’s currently in development sports the model number SM-R150, and is known internally as the Triathlon. While the report doesn’t state too many details about the new wearable, the internal codename does point to an activity or fitness tracking wearable. The Triathlon could come with a similar feature set to that of Xiaomi’s Mi Band, an entry-level fitness band that costs just $15. The report also notes that considering the model number is even lower than the Gear Fit’s (SM-R350), the Triathlon probably won’t come with a heart rate monitor or any other more premium features.

Considering the fact that Samsung just recently made its S Health application available to all, it wouldn’t be surprising if this new wearable was compatible with all Android devices at launch. Samsung wearables have always been pretty pricey at least at the start, so this could definitely be a way for the Korean technology giant to get its devices on more users’ wrists.
What are your thoughts? If Samsung launched a fitness tracker similar to the Xiaomi Mi Band in specs and price, would you buy it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
