Google has acquired Fly Labs to boost Google Photos functionality

Google has really doubled down on its Google Photos app, and yet another remind of this, Google has acquired Fly Labs to bolster the functionality that already exists. If you’ve never heard of Fly Labs, that’s because their apps – Clips, Tempo, Fly and Crop – have only been available on the iOS platform to the tune of 3 million downloads and 20 million videos edited. This purchase means that these apps will only exist on the App Store for another 3 months, and won’t be receiving any other updates – but you know, that’s only if you have an iOS device.

If you’re on an Android device and love Google Photos, you’ll be excited to know that Google is going to be incorporating Fly Labs video editing know-how into the Google Photos app. It seems inevitable now that Google Photos is going to be morphed into your one-stop shop for all visual media needs and presumably Google’s machine learning algorithms are going to be coming along for the ride too – we’re excited.

The creators of Crossy Road are back with Shooty Skies

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Crossy Road was an incredibly popular game, bringing back fond memories of age-old road crossing games like Frogger. Two of the three-man team that created Crossy Road have teamed up again under a new name – Mighty Games Group – to bring you Shooty Skies, yet another game that brings back a game genre from a by-gone video gaming age. This time, it’s the 2D sky shooters that Shooty Skies aims to emulate except with the same voxel art style that made Crossy Road so charming. Check out the trailer for the game below:

It’s frantic, colourful and there are in-app purchases if you want to customize your avatar the way you want them – note that you’ll still unlock them over time from playing the game. Of course, this means that the game is free-to-play, so really that’s all the reasons you need to pick up and try Shooty Skies this weekend.

VW will reportedly offer cash to cheated diesel car drivers

Germany Volkswagen Earns

If you’re feeling burned by Volkswagen’s decision to cheat on diesel emissions tests, you might get some compensation for your troubles. Sources for The Truth About Cars understand that VW will launch a “TDI Goodwill Program” that compensates diesel car drivers with cash in the form of prepaid cards. In the US, you’d get both a $500 universal card as well as a VW-only card worth $500 to $750. The automaker isn’t confirming details just yet, but it tells the New York Times that it’s planning an announcement on Monday. Dealers also tell the newspaper that they’re aware of a program in the works, although they don’t know the specifics. It may not include the expanded range of cars reportedly tainted by the scandal, though, since VW is denying claims that it cheated with some models.

The creators of Crossy Road release Shooty Skies to the Play Store

If you were a fan of Crossy Road, the retro-style reimagining of Frogger with colorful playable characters and two scoops of wackiness, then you might be eager to know that the same guys who made that game have just put out the arcade shoot-em-up Shooty Skies.

It’s not technically the same company as Crossy Road, which was developed by Hipster Whale. Shooty Skies is the brainchild of Mighty Games, which includes two key developers from Crossy Road: Andy Sum and Matt Hall. The game boasts its predecessor’s blocky, colorful aesthetic and a return to the collectables that made Crossy Road so addicting.

Shooty Skies plays much differently than Crossy Road. As Crossy Road is to Frogger, Shooty Skies is to those myriad top-down bullet hell games that crowded arcades in the eighties and nineties. The ground scrolls by below and your ship fires automatically. You have to use your finger to pilot your little character around the screen, avoiding enemy fire. Your weapons start off as peashooters, but busting open presents frees collectables that turn you into a flying arsenal, The enemies get increasingly tough and increasingly complex as you go.

It’s a fun, bright little game that makes its money off in-game advertising. If that sounds like your cup of tea, head on over to the Google Play Store and download your free copy.

What do you think? Is Shooty Skies your kind of game, or are you going to be passing on this one? Let us know in the comments!

Each device has to be associated with your account. So far it does seem to be a US-only offer, but nothing is stopping you from trying. It also seems to work with all Android TVs, at least according to online reports so far.

How to get my $6 of Google Play Store credit

Want to cash in on this deal? The process is super simple! There are two ways to redeem this offer: through the Chrome browser and through the web.

Redeem $6 credit through Chrome browser

  1. Go to the Google Cast Offers website.
  2. This does use the Cast extension, so make sure it’s installed, activated and that your Cast devices are on (in the same network as the device you are using).
  3. Check the website box that says you agree to share your Chromecast’s device ID with Google. Then press “Continue”.
  4. The deal should be in your available options. Redeem your $6 and follow instructions.
