Apple Seeds Second iOS 9.2 Beta to Developers

Apple today seeded the second beta of iOS 9.2 to developers for testing purposes, one week after seeding the first iOS 9.2 beta and two weeks after releasing iOS 9.1 to the public.

The new iOS 9.2 beta, build 13C5060d, is available as an over-the-air update and through the Apple Developer Center.

The first beta of iOS 9.2 introduced some changes for the Safari View Controller within apps, letting it work more like the standard Safari app with support for third-party Action Extensions and the ability to long tap on the Reload button to reload content without content blockers or request desktop site.

iOS 9.2 also includes a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements, many of which are under-the-hood improvements. Thus far no other outward-facing changes have been discovered, but updates in the second beta will be listed below if found.

Bug Fixes in iOS 9.2 Beta 2:

– Un-paring and re-pairing the Apple Watch will no longer cause the Stocks glance to go missing.

– Syncing Music to the Apple Watch has been fixed.

– An issue impacting audio quality when playing audio over USB in some car stereos has been fixed.

– A bug with iCloud Keychain has been fixed, so users should no longer see “Could Not Set Up iCloud Keychain” errors.

– Videos with ‘folw’ track associations will no longer fail yo play on 32-bit devices.

New Features in iOS 9.2 Beta 2:

– It’s now possible to dismiss the Safari View Controller with an edge swipe.

Sennheiser’s new Orpheus headphones cost $50,000

When it comes to the very particular world of audiophile headphones, few names raise as many pulses as Sennheiser’s Orpheus HE90. Designed 25 years ago, and limited to 300 pairs, the legendary headset came with its own valve amp, and a hefty $16,000 price tag. Today, Sennheiser lifted the cloth on a new Orpheus, and it’s just as crazy. Apparently 10 years in the making, the new Orpheus builds on its predecessor’s famous electrostatic design, bringing it up to date with a new signal processor, new marble-clad design, and wonderfully decadent motorized housing that reveals the knobs and valves when you turn it on.

It is not known what improvements the second update to OS X El Capitan will bring, but it’s likely to focus on bug fixes, security enhancements, and performance improvements to address issues that have been discovered since the release of OS X 10.11.1. Apple’s beta 1 release notes asked developers to focus on Graphics, Mail, Wi-Fi, Calendar, USB, Notes, Photos, and Spotlight.

Pinterest’s shopping pins arrive on Android for the holiday frenzy

After launching its Buyable Pins on iOS earlier this summer, Pinterest is looking to let the Google faithful in on the goods, too. As of today, the online repository is rolling out the feature to Android users. This means that you’ll be able to purchase goods from retailers large and small without having to leave the app. We’re talking stuff from the likes of Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus and more. In fact, the tally of Buyable Pins now numbers 60 million and a new Pinterest Shop curates trends for easy access. Just like regular ol’ pins, you can search for the shopping items and filter them based on price and other criteria to find the exact items you’re after. While today’s news means Buyable Pins are available on both Android and iOS, they remain absent from the web for now, but Pinterest plans to employ them in your browser “in the future.” Slideshow-338498

Jon Stewart’s return to TV will be on HBO Now ‘multiple’ times a day

67th Primetime Emmy Awards - Show

Even after leaving the Daily Show behind, apparently Jon Stewart just couldn’t stay away. HBO just announced it has signed a four year production deal with the TV host that will kick off with “short form digital content.” He’s apparently working with the graphics company OTOY on new technology that will allow him to create and post digital content “multiple times throughout the day” (we’re going to guess that means Snapchat, but who knows). Beyond being “the game streaming service you’ve never heard of” OTOY has been working on tech for virtual reality video streams you can move around in, although there’s no word on exactly what it will do here. According to Stewart “Appearing on television 22 minutes a night clearly broke me. I’m pretty sure I can produce a few minutes of content every now and again.”

Apple Releases First Beta of tvOS 9.1

Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming update to tvOS, the new operating system that runs on the fourth-generation Apple TV. Today’s tvOS beta marks the first software update to tvOS 9.0, a final version of which was released alongside the new Apple TV.

tvOS betas are not as easy to install as beta updates for iOS and OS X. The update will require the Apple TV to be connected to a computer with a USB-C to USB-A cable, with the software downloaded and installed via iTunes.

It is not yet clear what is included in the new version of tvOS, but Apple’s release notes for the update include references to networking and scrolling tweaks and we will include any other external facing changes below.

Microsoft putting an end to unlimited OneDrive storage, changing existing plans

OneDrive_Office365_unlimited_storage

Mark this in the “this is why we can’t have nice things” category. Microsoft has announced that they will be ending their unlimited cloud storage options for Office 365 consumers and will be making changes to the other plans they offer. The change was triggered by cases where some users were taking advantage of the unlimited option by backing up several PCs and entire movie and DVR recording collections. Some users were consuming more than 75 TB of space, which Microsoft says is 14,000 times the average. In their announcement, Microsoft says they decided to focus on the majority of users and their need for “high-value productivity and collaboration experiences” rather than the “extreme backup scenarios” some users were creating.

Users who currently have unlimited OneDrive storage plans will find their access being reduced to 1 TB of available space. Microsoft is giving users who have more than 1 TB currently stored 12 months of continued access to the storage above that 1 TB limit. Microsoft says they will provide a pro-rated refund to subscribers who decide Office 365 no longer meets their needs as a result of this change or other changes.

In addition to the changes at the top end, Microsoft is also eliminating their 100 GB and 200 GB paid plans for new customers and replacing them with a 50 GB plan that will cost $1.99 per month. This new plan will roll out in early 2016. Current customers on these mid-tier plans will be able to keep them. Finally, users who are taking advantage of the free 15 GB OneDrive plans will find their space being reduced to 5 GB starting sometime in early 2016. Users who have more than 5 GB stored will have the same 12 month period of access to their storage as the unlimited plan users.
