Black Friday pre-sale: Vantrue R1 Pro 2K HD Car Dash Cam (30% off with discount code)

With technology advancing so quickly there is almost little reason to avoid picking up the Vantrue R1 Pro 2k Dash Cam. With long commutes for workers or even for drivers of Lyft and Uber, the dash camera can be a source of insurance to show you were driving responsibly if you are ever in an accident. In another case, it could even be used to monitor your kids who are newly licensed. I remember when I was 16: if my parents put this dash camera in my truck to record me, I probably would have been a much more responsible drivers. In the long run the Vantrue R1 2k Dash Cam could prove to pay for itself if it can help keep your insurance rate down.

This NYC music venue uses water springs to soundproof itself

National Sawdust

National Sawdust is an event space that took five years (and a bunch of engineering magic) to realize. Based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the building is a nonprofit looking into the creative process behind making music. Which we’re sure is fascinating, but it’s the design that caught our attention. Early into the project designers conceived of a box-in-box arrangement, keeping the outers shell, but building something new inside it. While it solved several design issues, it also meant no sound traveled inside the performance space and no sound escaped. That said, being cited in the middle of NYC — that wasn’t quite enough. With a subway running underneath the venue and heavy traffic outside, the designers decided to lift the new building’s design above roughly 1,000 water springs, dampening noise and converting that energy into heat.

EVE Online’s new minigame puts players to work, for science

EVE Online is probably best known as the hardcore space sim where huge quantities of real money (say, about $1,500) can be lost at the drop of a hat. It’s a pretty unique accolade, but developer CCP is working on a better one — if everything goes as planned, EVE Online will soon be known as the hardcore space sim where players devote thousands of man-hours to science by contributing to the Human Protein Atlas.

Who’s Down is Google’s latest app to make meeting up easier

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Google has recently announced (with surprisingly little fanfare) a new app called Who’s Down. As the name of the app might suggest, Who’s Down is kind of a simplified version of Doodle – when sent an invite, all you do if confirm whether you’re down or not, and everything else goes from there. There is chat functionality in the app to facilitate things that require words, but it’s main function is to work out who’s coming to an event and who’s not.

However, if you want to download Who’s Down right now, it looks like the app is currently region locked, presumably to the US – all I know is I can’t get it in Australia, but let us know in the comments if you can download it. Once you have the app, you’ll still need an invite as Who’s Down is operating with an invite system for the time being. There’s no word on how long Who’s Down will stay in this locked down state, but presumably Google is trialling this app in the short term only – the Google Play Store page is currently titled “Who’s Down – Fall 2015” as if to suggest the app may change with the seasons. If you are lucky enough to fulfil all the above criteria, we’ve got the download link for you below:

HTC One M8 GPE Marshmallow rollout delayed

HTC_One_M8_Back_HTC_Logo_TA_02

HTC has made commitments in the past to quickly update their devices and the release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow has been no different with the company releasing a planned schedule that included devices in this quarter like the HTC One M9 and HTC One M8. One of the devices on that list, the HTC One M8 Google Play Edition, has suffered a delay after it was thought HTC might get the update out before the end of October.

According to Mo Versi, vice president of Product Management with HTC, the company is going to have to “re-spin” the software after some issues were identified. Versi says the delay should not last more than a few days before technical approval is received and the update can start rolling out. Of course, users with devices purchased through carriers will have to wait for the carriers to prepare their own specific updates before receiving Marshmallow.

For all Android smartphone manufacturers, a race is underway to rollout the Marshmallow update to devices old and new as quickly as possible. Manufacturers have heard from consumers that they are watching to see who can get the latest version of Android onto consumer devices the fastest and which ones lag behind. The continuing problems with carriers not being quite as keen to deliver updates is also part of the driving force resulting in manufacturers selling direct to buyers to avoid those delays.

Now you can create Windows 10 apps without writing a line of code

The Windows Store isn’t exactly known for being a robust app marketplace, and Microsoft knows it. The company is always looking for new ways to attract developers to the platform. In the past, Microsoft made tools designed to port iOS and Android apps to Windows, and created the Universal app system that puts all Windows apps on the same platform. Now, Microsoft has updated its App Studio to allow users to create, prototype and submit an app for release from the comfort of a web browser — without installing Visual Studio or writing a single line of code. It works, too: I just created a functional Windows 10 app in less than ten minutes.

Let’s celebrate George Boole’s 200th birthday. Or not.

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

If you’re a programmer of any kind, today might be one of the more significant days in the calendar that you might not know about. According to Google‘s latest doodle which can be found on Google’s search page, today is George Boole‘s 200th birthday – if that name sounds familiar, that’s because he is the logician who had the ‘Boolean’ data type named after him. Boole was born in England and the mathematician and philosopher was best known for his work in The Laws of Thought.

George Boole's 200th birthdayUnfortunately, Boole died in 1864 after becoming ill after walking home in the rain. Boole might have survived if his wife hadn’t poured more water on him when he was lying in bed, believing that the cure to illnesses would be similar to how the illness came about – something we now know is highly illogical. All the same, Boole’s contributions to mathematics and logic live on and continues to influence our lives everyday without us even realizing it.

What do you think about George Boole’s 200th birthday doodle? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Pre-order the OnePlus X now at Gearbest.com

OnePlus has been shaking up the smartphone market and has just released its OnePlus X which looks to add to their success. For the incredibly affordable price of $250, you get a phone with a Snapdragon 801, 1080p AMOLED display, Android 5.1, 16GB of memory, 3GB of RAM, and a 13MP rear camera.

1446170333141-P-3316337

Our own Josh Noriega, a phone snob, is even excited with the release of the OnePlus X. The only downside to ordering a phone from OnePlus is their invite system which can be a pain in the rear. You have to register on their site, request an invite, and once you get the invite you have a very limited time in which you can use it. You don’t even know when you’ll get that invite too. It could be today or it could be two months from now.

Gearbest.com looks to help you solve that problem by offering the OnePlus X on their own site for $295.99 with free shipping. Gearbest.com does not charge tax so the premium price you pay is not much more than what you would pay if you were to order this phone direct from OnePlus. You can check out the specs below and head on over to Gearbest.com to pre-order your X now by following this link. Gearbest.com also offers a 45-day return to ensure you are happy with your purchase.
