Honor handsets to get Android M in February 2016

At an event in Berlin last week, Huawei’s Honor sub-brand confirmed that they would be launching a beta for the upcoming Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, which would be available to selected Honor 7 users in the coming weeks. What wasn’t clear however, was when the rest of the range would get the update but a tweet by Honor’s Indian account has revealed that the mass rollout will begin in February next year.

The beta, which is set to launch later this month, will be available only for Honor 7 users but the final update will be available to users of the Honor 4C, 4X, Honor 6 and 6 Plus along with the Huawei Honor 7. A mainstay of Huawei handsets is the presence of Huawei’s custom interface, EMUI. Rather than being an addition to the Android interface, EMUI overhauls the complete experience but sadly, there are some factors that don’t work too well. Having just become a Nexus manufacturer – with the excellent Nexus 6P – here’s hoping that this will mean EMUI will be scaled back a little with the next update..
While Honor have confirmed the update, its parent brand Huawei has been conspicuous in its lack of forthcoming information; the company is known for being somewhat slow at updating its handsets but being a Nexus OEM may help speed this up. Either way, we’ll hopefully hear more about the rollout at the rumoured Mate 8 launch later this month.
Huawei Mate 8 teased for Nov 26 unveiling

Huawei has uploaded a new teaser and there’s little doubt about what the company has planned. The Huawei Mate 8 looks set for an official unveiling on November 26th, at an event which will presumably take place in China.
Rumors about the Mate 8 point to a large flagship that also aims to offer value for money. We are expecting to see a 6-inch FullHD panel and at least 3GB of RAM, with storage in the typical 32GB or 64GB options. I would assume that the Mate S’ Force Touch display technology will also make an appearance in Huawei’s upcoming smartphone. Newly leaked pictures, which were apparently snapped from a Foxconn factory, also point to a metal frame for the handset, and a dual SIM and microSD card tray.
The Huawei Mate 8 is expected to be powered by the company’s own HiSilicon Kirin 950 SoC and we can even see little references to circuit design in the teaser. The chip is rumored to feature an octa-core big.LITTLE Cortex-A72 and A53 CPU design, paired up with a Mali-T880 GPU and other high end features, such has high resolution camera support and Cat 10 LTE. Huawei is preparing to unveil this processing package at a separate event on November 5th.

OnePlus introduces its On-Guard smartphone warranty policy

OnePlus has a pretty patchy reputation when it comes to customer satisfaction and service, but the company has just announced a new optional warranty policy for its smartphones that should help to improve the customer experience.
OnePlus has teamed up with a couple of insurers around the world to offer global protection. OnePlus 2: On-Guard is provided by simplesurance for Europe, and B2X OnePlus Service2 and Protect2 for Indian customers. OnePlus says that it is partnering up with an experienced smartphone insurer to bring a similar policy to the US and Canada in the near future.
The plan covers component breakages and accidental damage, including drops, as well as water damage and vandalism. Insurance can be purchased at checkout for new devices, or customers can contact simplesurance customer support to purchase a policy within 15 days of buying a new phone. Unfortunately, this means that the warranty cannot be applied by early OnePlus 2 customers, which is sure to be a let-down for the company’s most fervent backers.

This warranty program will also roll out to the OnePlus X once it goes on sale in the respective regions.
In Europe, pricing is set at €39.99 for 12 months of On-Guard coverage, or 24 months will set you back €64.99. The B2X Service is priced at Rs. 999 in India, while B2X Protect costs Rs. 1,299 for a 1 year warranty. Prospective Indian customers can read more about the terms and conditions here.
Snapchat tells everyone to chill out over its new privacy policy
A few days ago, Snapchat updated its terms of use and privacy policy with some broadly-worded clauses that sent the internet into a tailspin. If you read it one way, you’d think that the firm would begin stockpiling your genital selfies, share them with the world and not even delete the pic on request. Of course, the company has now gone into damage-control mode, asking everyone to relax and clarifying that shots of your downstairs region remain your own business — unless some cheeky individual screenshots something that they shouldn’t.

DJI wants you to build sentient drones with its tiny computer
DJI has created a computer called Manifold that extends the capabilities of its Matrice test drone. It’s a platform for developers to build on, which DJI says can turn drones into “truly intelligent flying robots that can perform complex computing tasks and advanced image processing.” Think of it as something like an overpowered Arduino built specifically for drones. As well as customized ports for interfacing with the Matrice, the Manifold has USB, Ethernet, Mini-PCIe, HDMI, UART, SPI and I2C ports, which allow for all manner of sensors and add-ons to be connected. It’s powered by an Nvidia K1 processor with Kepler graphics, runs Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (a version of Linux with “long-term support”), and weighs less than 200g.

Huawei’s Honor brand to receive Marshmallow update in February 2016
It’s always good finding out that your phone’s manufacturer is planning on rolling out the latest version of Android to your handset, and today it’s the turn of Huawei’s Honor brand of smartphones. According to a tweet by @HiHonorIndia, the company will begin pushing out the final version of its Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to selected handsets in February next year.
The selected handsets include the following models:
- Honor 7
- Honor 4C
- Honor 4X
- Honor 6
- Honor 6 Plus
While February is still 3 months away, it’s good that Huawei has been transparent in its intentions as it rides the good publicity generated by its partnership with Google to produce the well-received Nexus 6P.
If you own an Honor 7 and can’t wait until February for the Marshmallow update, Huawei is said to be making a beta of the Android 6.0 firmware available to beta test in the coming weeks. So it might be worth keeping an eye for the announcement.

TalkTalk hack investigation results in a third arrest
Just how many people were involved in the TalkTalk hack? That’s the question everyone’s asking after UK police arrested a third individual over the weekend. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit apprehended a 20-year-old man on Saturday, after obtaining a search warrant for a property in south Staffordshire. He was later released on bail, and officers have confirmed that he won’t be recalled until March next year. Police arrested a further two suspects last week — a 15-year-old boy from County Antrim, Northern Ireland, and a 16-year-old boy from Feltham, London. An address in Liverpool has also been examined, although it’s unclear how that relates to the overall investigation.

The Large Hadron Collider’s next upgrade is moving forward
The Large Hadron Collider recently got back to work after a two-year layoff for maintenance and upgrades, but soon it will go under the knife again. Last week 230 scientists met at CERN in Switzerland to discuss the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, and move it from the development phase to the construction stage. After two more Long Shutdown periods in 2019 and 2024, the HL-LHC will deliver 10 times the amount of particle collisions it does now. New technology coming its way includes 12 superconducting quadropole magnets (one is pictured above), “crab” cavities that tilt the particle beams before collisions and more. When we took a look at the science behind particle accelerators a few years ago, the HL-LHC was already in development and after a four year design study it’s one (big) step closer to reality.
