NASA snaps photos of the ISS making its way across the sun
The image above isn’t of an alien world with strange markings: it’s our own sun, and those tiny marks show the International Space Station’s transit across its surface as seen from Earth. NASA chief photographer Bill Ingalls captured several photos of the ISS’ silhouette with our solar system’s star as the background from Shenandoah National Park on September 6th. The agency then stitched five different images together to conjure up the final product. Ingalls captured photos of the station’s lunar transit back in August, as well, if you’d also like to see it make its way across the moon. By the way, the spacecraft is traveling at a speed of around 5 miles per second and is fast enough to orbit our entire planet every 90 minutes!

V-Moda unveils a wireless version of its Crossfade headphones
Dig the look and sound of V-Moda’s Crossfade M-100 headphones, but not the cord that comes with them? You no longer have to give them up simply because you don’t like wires. V-Moda has released the Crossfade Wireless, which (as you might have guessed) gives you the option of going cord-free through Bluetooth. It’s not just a straight-up adaptation of the heavily customizable gear you already know, though. Plugging in a wire automatically shuts off all the electronics, keeping the lag (important for DJs and creative pros) to a minimum. You’re also getting a “refined” take on the M-100’s 50mm drivers, and the Bluetooth antennas have been tuned with the Apple Watch and Android Wear in mind — if you want to pair a tiny smartwatch with gigantic headphones, these may be ideal. You can snag a pair of Crossfade Wireless cans in chrome or silver for $299 right now, while more somber-hued black and red models are coming soon. Slideshow-318132

GoPro Odyssey 16-camera VR rig now available for $15,000

Remember that insane rig Google showed off at I/O? Yes, the one with the 16 GoPro cameras. It looked like the ideal VR-recording machine for content creators, and now it can be yours! The portable camera maker has just launched the product under the GoPro Odyssey moniker.
Don’t go rushing to try and get yourself one just yet, though. Needless to say, this product is not for everyone. For starters, the Odyssey costs a whopping $15,000. The price point alone leaves this product out of reach for many of us, but we should also mention the fact that GoPro won’t just sell this thing to everyone who shows up with 15 grand. At least not yet.

The GoPro Odyssey is only available for “select industry professionals” who want to invest into the VR market and create exciting content. This is why the manufacturer is going through a screening process, which means potential customers need to fill out a form in order to be considered for acquiring a one of these contraptions. You can register straight from GoPro’s official Odyssey page.
But let’s get back to the price, shall we? Obviously, this is the most disappointing part of today’s news. This thing seems way too expensive. For us normal folk, it may be, but we must consider the audience GoPro is trying to target here – professionals. While part of the price bump is all about the product’s “professional” status, it can also be justified by the amount of equipment this bundle packs.

The rig is only the beginning; this thing also packs 16 HERO4 Black cameras, 16 array bacpacs, 16 microSD cards, cables/accessories and even a fancy Pelican case to carry the whole thing in. Not to mention its integration with Google’s JUMP platform, which can take a huge weight off editors’ shoulders, as it can handle much of the tedious work and put all the content together. All things considered, it’s a pretty good deal for a company just looking for the simplest tool to make 3D content with.
Are any of you signing up? Just head over to GoPro’s website and register. You might be chosen!
John McAfee is running for president in 2016
Oddball anti-virus software pioneer and self-described “eccentric millionaire” Joh McAfee is throwing his hat into the increasingly crowded field of candidates for the 2016 presidential election. The Hill reports that McAfee filed paperwork to run for president with the Federal Election Commission today and says that campaign director Kyle Sandler confirmed the application’s authenticity. Shortly afterwards, McAfee himself launched what appears to be a new campaign website and said on Twitter that he’d make an “official announcement” tomorrow at 6PM ET.
We will have our official announcement at 6pm Eastern tomorrow
— John McAfee (@officialmcafee) September 8, 2015
There’s very little info on the site right now, but the URL (mcafee16.com) and #mcafee16 hashtag all make it clear that a presidential run is what this is all about. McAfee’s Twitter account has also been retweeting tweets about his potential presidential run — either this is one big troll or McAfee really is going to give this a shot.
Wired today published an interview with McAfee in which he said he was still not quite decided on whether or not to run, but it does give context to what McAfee feels needs to change in the US government. “It’s clear that the leadership of our country is illiterate on the fundamental technology that supports everything in life for us now, that is cyber science, our smartphones, our military hardware, our communications,” McAfee said to Wired.
It sounds like McAfee will not be competing against Hilary Clinton or the cadre of candidates vying for the Republican party nomination — instead, he’s going to found his own party that The Hill says is yet to be announced. History shows that McAfee won’t have much luck going as a third-party candidate, but he’ll likely bring a… unique perspective to the battle.

Huawei could have a dual curved display smartphone, supplied by Samsung
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Without a doubt, one of the most unique devices of 2015 has been the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and its dual curved display. Samsung took a bit risk with this design, and despite having tested one curved edge on the Galaxy Note Edge, it was still a big risk to up it to two curved edges. While Samsung hasn’t quite seen the financial pay-off it intended from releasing this novel feature into the wild, it appears Samsung’s competitors are also eyeing the dual curved display – a new report says that Huawei could have a dual curved display smartphone ready sometime in 2016, and that Samsung will be supplying them with the display unit.
According to the report, Huawei wants to have a Quad HD device which has dual curved edges, something which Samsung is the sole producer of. Perhaps even more surprising is that Huawei intends to make 3 million of this device every month, which would make it one of its major flagship devices in 2016. It’s good business for Samsung, and it looks like for the time being, the dual curved display is here to stay.

Update to Minecraft: Pocket Edition drops, adds cross-platform multiplayer
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Sometimes it just boggles the mind how popular the video game Minecraft has become. Other times, it’s 4am and I’m wondering why I bothered to dig all the way down to the bedrock in search of diamonds for the 50 millionth time. Minecraft is a largely multiplayer game, but we’ve been restricted to playing with players on the same platform – no more. An update to Minecraft: Pocket Edition and Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta means that players on PC, Android, iOS, and Windows Phone will be able to play together on a local network. It’s not quite true cross-platform multiplayer on hosted servers, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.
This latest update brings Minecraft: Pocket Edition up to version 0.12.1 – why they never bothered to bring it up to version 1.0, we’ll never know. Cross-platform multiplayer isn’t all that Minecraft: Pocket Edition is getting – new touch controls, controller support and controller mapping options have also been added which should make quite a few people happy. The ability to finally sprint and crawl have also been added to the Pocket Edition. For more info about the update, be sure to check out Microsoft’s post about it here.

Sega announces Football Manager Mobile 2016 for Android, coming this November

Sega and Sports Interactive have just announced that Football Manager 2016, the latest title in the popular sports management simulation series, will launch sometime this November. There are a handful of new features being added to the title, along with a pretty big shake-up concerning the game’s release.
This new release will consist of two separate mobile games, Football Manager Touch and Football Manager Mobile. The Touch version will come to PC, Mac, Linux and high-end tablets. This game was previously available as a quick play mode in older Football Manager titles, but will now be available as a standalone game. Football Manager Handheld will be rebranded as Football Manager Mobile, but will keep much of the same functionality. There will also be a standard Football Manager 2016 game for PC and Mac, though this release won’t be available on mobile devices.
As for the new release of Football Manager Mobile, the key features consist of:
- Enhanced Tactics: Take greater control of your squad with the introduction of new tactical instructions. You can choose where your team concentrates its passing, as well as selecting your main attacking threat and creative outlet – and even advise your goalkeeper on distribution.
- Coaching Staff: Prepare your squad for match days better than ever before with the addition of coaches, providing your team with focused training to prepare for their next big fixture.
- Management Style: The introduction of gold, silver and bronze coaching badges allows you to define your own management style. Will you concentrate on improving your defence or attack, or focus on morale and man management? Your decision will influence your team’s style.
So, why the big shake-up? Sports Interactive boss Miles Jacobson explains:
For some time now it’s been clear to us that there is no ‘one size fits all’ football management experience. While a huge number of our fans have the time and dedication required to devote themselves to the ‘full’ simulation, there’s an equally-large number who prefer a more streamlined option. Not only that, but the widespread availability of mobile devices means that people are playing in different ways. The introduction of Football Manager Touch as a standalone offering – playable across computer and tablet – means that we now offer something for everyone.
Football Manager Mobile 2016 will come to Android and iOS this November, and Football Manager Touch 2016 will come to Steam and high-end tablets at the same time. We’re not exactly sure what tablets make the “high-end” cut, but we’ll update you as we learn more.
AT&T offers a plug-in WiFi hotspot for your car
Your existing car probably doesn’t have a built-in WiFi hotspot, but AT&T will soon have a way to add one and deliver that sweet, on-demand internet access. The carrier is launching the ZTE Mobley, a WiFi hotspot that plugs into your car’s OBD-II port and shares an LTE data link with everyone inside. Yes, you could just tether your phone, but AT&T is counting on simplicity to reel you in — the hotspot goes live shortly after you turn your car on, and you don’t have to worry about battery life. It won’t cost you much to give this concept a shot, at least. The Mobley will be available for ‘free’ on a 2-year contract, or $100 outright. The biggest expense is the data itself, which will cost you $20-plus for stand-alone service or $10 if you add the Mobley to a shared plan.
