Android distribution numbers for September show more growth for Lollipop

Each month, Google organizes the distribution of Android into a very simple pie chart. The data shows which the versions of Android that are still active on device’s today. On Monday, Google finished collecting data for September 2015. Things are how you’d expect them to be: Lollipop is still growing while KitKat is the most popular version of Android.

Despite being released in 2012 and 2013, respectively, Jelly Bean (31.8%) and KitKat (39.2%) remain at the forefront of Android distribution (71% combined). Lollipop, which debuted in late 2014, has grown a few percentage points to 21%. Companies are getting on top of updating their devices at a better pace, but it seems that the many low-end and mid-range devices with KitKat are weighing down better growth for Lollipop.

And it wouldn’t be a proper reporting of Android distribution numbers without mentioning that Froyo, Gingerbread, and Ice Cream Sandwich are still clinging on to a minor 8% combined.

Next month could be the first time we see Android 6.0 Marshmallow appear on the pie chart.

Verizon will begin testing 5G wireless early next year


verizon new logoA new report states that ‘Big Red’ or Verizon, is planning to start undergoing testing as early as 2016 for 5G wireless. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. It will be a long time before 5G becomes mainstream.

4G is still improving in some places in the U.S. and talks about 5G wireless have already begun. Verizon looks to be the first interested on the new wireless service and may perhaps start a trial program in 2016. However, it will be at least another year before 5G becomes fully deployed. Verizon likes to be the first ones to do things except when referring to system updates. 5G is yet to establish an official standard so progress can’t be made at this point. Once the new wireless service arrives, the carrier(s) must undergo lots of testing and trouble shooting. Early adapters will likely have to deal with inconsistent signal until the service becomes widespread.

Company will partner with technology leaders to create innovation ecosystems in two Verizon innovation centers

NEW YORK, Sept. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Verizon –  the first company to introduce 4G LTE, or fourth-generation long-term evolution, wireless network technology about six years ago – is once again poised to usher in a new era with an aggressive roadmap for fifth-generation, or 5G, wireless technology.

By nearly all accounts, 5G technology should be introduced in the U.S. sometime after 2020, but Verizon is accelerating the expected rate of innovation. By working closely with key partners, Verizon aims to launch field technology trials next year.

Verizon’s plan:

  • Verizon, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm and Samsung kicked-off the inaugural Verizon 5G Technology Forum last month, and have established working teams to ensure an aggressive pace of innovation.  
  • 5G network environments, or “sandboxes,” are being created in Verizon’s Waltham, Mass., and San Francisco Innovation Centers. Just like in the early days of the development of 4G LTE technology, collaborating in a shared environment will foster compelling applications faster.
  • Verizon and its partners are committed to beginning technology field trials in 2016. 

“5G is no longer a dream of the distant future,” said Roger Gurnani, executive vice president and chief information and technology architect for Verizon. “We feel a tremendous sense of urgency to push forward on 5G and mobilize the ecosystem by collaborating with industry leaders and developers to usher in a new generation of innovation.”

The expected benefits of 5G, as described during Verizon’s inaugural forum, include about 50 times the throughput of current 4G LTE, latency in the single milliseconds, and the ability to handle exponentially more Internet-connected devices to accommodate the expected explosion of the Internet of Everything.

“When you’re planning a technological evolution at this scale it must be a collaboration of players in the ecosystem,” said Marcus Weldon, chief technology officer of Alcatel-Lucent and president of Bell Labs. “Having Verizon initiate this effort now, even as 4G LTE technology has so much headroom left, will no doubt add to the rich fabric of our digital lives for many years to come.”

The Verizon-led effort keeps the communications industry in the U.S. vibrant and globally competitive, explained Rima Qureshi, chief strategy officer for Ericsson. “A lot of development and requirements for 5G networks have so far come from Asian operators,” she said. “It’s exciting to see a U.S. company accelerate the rate of innovation and introduce new partners.”

In addition to working with communications and technology leaders, Verizon’s 5G Technology Forum also includes a group of leading east- and west-coast venture capital groups focused on a variety of emerging technologies.

“Each partner is a leader, but together we represent more than $50 billion in annual research, development and technology investments and thousands of patents,” Gurnani said. “Collectively we are bringing to bear an incredible amount of resources and intellectual capital to introduce the next generation of wireless technology.”

Building networks for the future unleashes innovation

From the beginning, the possibilities of 4G LTE were as great as the imaginations of the developers, engineers and entrepreneurs who began immediately putting their ideas into action.  The Verizon Innovation program was created, and Innovations Centers were opened in Waltham and San Francisco, with the mission of encouraging the growth and development of the 4G LTE ecosystem. Innovators from around the world worked with Verizon wireless experts to test their ideas and quickly get them to market.

And the market grew quickly. Verizon began building and testing 4G LTE as early as 2008 with the creation of a 10-cell network sandbox around Boston. The first LTE data call was made in August 2009, and Verizon commercially launched the nation’s first, and the world’s largest, 4G LTE network in December 2010 with 39 major metropolitan areas and more than 60 major airports covered.  

Today, more than 98 percent of the U.S. population has access to 4G LTE and 87 percent of Verizon Wireless data traffic is carried over the network.

Verizon has long been committed to leading the way in network innovation and reliability. Earlier this summer, the National RootScore®Report, conducted by RootMetrics, found that Verizon customers enjoy the most reliable and strongest network performance overall, from Maine to California and in between the Canadian and Mexican borders. This marked the fourth consecutive time Verizon’s wireless network has been acknowledged as the leader in overall performance among national wireless service providers in the U.S. by RootMetrics, an independent third party.

AT&T, ZTE work together for an in-car WiFi hotspot

On September 11, AT&T will begin selling an in-car WiFi hotspot online and at its retail stores throughout the country.

The carrier partnered with ZTE to create a device that connects to a vehicles on-board diagnostics (ODB) port. The ZTE Mobley offers a wireless connection to AT&T’s 4G LTE network for up to five devices simultaneously.

Worried that your vehicle won’t support this device? AT&T and ZTE say that it should work in most vehicles made in 1996 and after.

AT&T customers can sign a two-year contract to get the ZTE Mobley at no cost or they can pay $100 just once to bring the device into their cars. It can be added to AT&T’s Mobile Share Value plan for $10 per month or a DataConnect ranging for $20/1GB or $30/3GB per month.

‘Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen’ heads to PC in January


Surprise! Capcom’s widely beloved action-fantasy RPG, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, is due to hit PC in January for $30. The original Dragon’s Dogma launched on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in 2012, and the massive Dark Arisen expansion came to Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2013. Capcom announced the new PC version today, noting it will support Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamepads on top of keyboard-and-mouse controls, plus feature “stunningly high-res graphics and improved fidelity.”

The PC version of Dark Arisen will include full support on Steam, Capcom says. When the expansion debuted in 2013, we called it a “sprawling hunk of supplemental content” and predicted it would “inevitably be billed as the definitive Dragon’s Dogma experience.” Earlier this year, Capcom unveiled Dragon’s Dogma Online, a free party-based RPG that’s out now in Japan across PS4, PS3 and PC.

Capcom is on a roll recently with re-releases: It’s currently (and finally) working on a remake of Resident Evil 2.

Mini review video: our verdict on the Moto X Pure in under a minute


Mini Review: Moto X Pure Edition

Thanks to upstarts like OnePlus, Motorola has more competition in the “cheap but good” phone category than it used to. That said, the company’s third-generation flagship, the Moto X Pure, ushers in enough improvements that it continues to be our favorite handset in the $400-or-so price range. As ever, we love the Moto X’s customizable design, useful software tricks and the fact that it runs on every US carrier. This time, however, Motorola made some major enhancements to the camera, which has never been the company’s strong suit. Yes, the 21-megapixel sensor still struggles a bit in low light, and maybe that’s something Moto will address in next year’s version. Even as is, though, the camera is much better than it used to be. Other than that, our main gripes are that the performance and battery life fall slightly short of other flagships, but that’s not saying much, especially since some of the rival devices we compared it to cost significantly more off-contract. That, in under 200 words, is the gist of our review, and if you have less than 60 seconds, you can see the device in action in the video above.

Macy’s is testing mini-Best Buys in select stores


Shopper's At Macy's Ahead of Quarterly Earnings Release

If you’re planning on doing some holiday shopping at Macy’s this fall, you might encounter goods from another retailer. The department store announced today that it would test Best Buy outlets in 10 of its locations starting in November. Best Buy employees will staff the 300-square-foot sections that’ll offer a smattering of phones, tablets, wearables, audio gear and more. In terms of brands, Samsung is the only company mentioned by name, but you can likely expect a few more notable choices to be available as well (Beats, Jawbone, etc.). Samsung has dedicated floor space inside Best Buy locations alongside the likes of Apple and Sony after all, so the direct mention isn’t too much of a surprise. The store inside a store setups will remain in place into 2016, when Macy’s and Best Buy plan to take stock before plotting the best course of action.

Android Wear is coming to China with Motorola’s help


Motorola's 2nd-generation Moto 360 smartwatch

Android Wear smartwatches have been available in many places for a while, but not China — the platform’s dependencies on Google Play and Google Now weren’t going to fly when Google refuses to offer some services in the censorship-heavy country. Motorola isn’t deterred, however. It’s releasing a version of the new Moto 360 in China with local services in place of their Google equivalents. Mobvoi will handle both search and voice recognition, third-party stores will offer apps and Sogou will handle navigation. It definitely won’t represent the familiar Android Wear experience, but it will give Chinese Android fans a wearable option they haven’t had before.

So why is Google willing to compromise on its historically tight control over Android Wear, especially when it isn’t likely to make much if any money on Chinese sales? Google doesn’t say much in its chat with The Verge on the subject, but this is likely about giving the platform a foothold that it wouldn’t have otherwise. Unlike with phones, there hasn’t been a version of Android Wear that China-focused manufacturers (like Motorola’s parent, Lenovo) could use. If Google didn’t bend, it would effectively hand the Chinese smartwatch market to Apple, Samsung and other companies that are either building their own platforms or creating decidedly unofficial Android watches. This sets a baseline where Google can deliver its core experience and push updates relatively frequently.

Twitter’s ‘Periscope’ App Coming to New Apple TV


Apple’s upcoming revamped Apple TV will support a full App Store, and TechCrunch has shared some details on one of the first third-party apps that will be available for the device. According to the site, live video streaming service Periscope is building an app for the Apple TV, which will likely allow users to watch content streamed from the Periscope iOS app.

We don’t have a specific unveiling or launch date for Periscope on Apple TV. Twitter and Periscope did not respond to our inquiry before press time. The app might be previewed in tomorrow’s Apple keynote to show off the potential of the Apple TV software development kit. Apple wants to get developers’ minds swirling with ideas for what they could build.

Periscope, owned by Twitter, is an app that allows users to capture and broadcast live video streams. Currently, Periscope videos can be watched solely on the web and through smartphones using iOS and Android apps, but with an expansion to the Apple TV, video streams will be available natively on larger screens for the first time.

Apple’s revamped Apple TV will debut tomorrow, at the company’s iPhone-centric September 9 event to be held at the Bill Graham Civic Center. Along with a full App Store that will include both apps and games, the new set top box will include deep Siri and search integration, a touch-based motion-enabled remote control, an A8 processor, and additional storage space.

Android OEM strategies in 2015: which OEM’s are heading in the right direction?

The year 2015 has been a mixture of rebirth and, arguably, stagnation, depending on the OEM in question and who you ask. Some players have largely kept the same strategy, for better or worse, while others have started to plant the seeds of change with shakeups in design and software. We have to wonder, which OEMs are heading in the right direction, and which aren’t?

Before we ask that question, let’s take a look at each OEM and highlight their basic strategy for 2015 so far.

Samsung

One the biggest examples of change in 2015 can be seen in Samsung. While the company’s button layout and UI design has largely stayed the same in 2015, they have considerably evolved their design language and streamlined the software experience starting with the Samsung Galaxy S6. At the same time, they have also made some stark changes in their product philosophy with the decision to cut microSD and removable batteries from their key 2015 flagships.

Not everyone is a fan of the changes Samsung has made, but there’s no denying that people are now buzzing about Samsung in a way they simply weren’t in 2014.

An example of a company that has done little to change their strategy this year is HTC. Despite continued hard fiscal times, HTC did little to raise the bar with its 2015 One M9 flagship. The year isn’t over just yet, and HTC may have a few cards up its sleeve, but ultimately the lack of change is probably a big surprise to fans who were hoping to see something a bit more awe-inspiring from the troubled handset maker.

Bottom-line, HTC’s reluctance for change has led to many would-be consumers dismissing the brand as a viable option in 2015.

Starting with the Moto X, Motorola has been firmly planted in the philosophy that experience is really what matters, not the specs or even the shiny extras. This had led to the company focusing on customization, pricing, user-friendly software, and a near-stock experience that flies.

In 2015, Motorola has kept this philosophy, while taking a few steps forward. The Moto G introduced Moto Maker support and waterproofing, while the Moto X Style (aka Moto X Pure Edition) has followed the trend of bigger QHD displays, and yet at the same time managed to cut pricing down to as little as $400 without sacrificing any of the elements that have made the Moto X series a popular choice for Android fans.

LG

Buyers are not swayed by the G4's leather back

The year 2015 has been all about change for Samsung. In contrast, LG’s 2015 strategy seemingly is to see whatever Samsung is doing, and offer the opposite experience. This has meant a continued push for microSD and removable backs, the continuation of plastic bodies (though they’ve also offered premium options like the LG G4 leather back option), and, while they optimized the software, the LG UI is as feature packed as ever.

While LG is rumored to have a super-premium phone that might make some more aggressive changes when compared to the LG G4 and its earlier 2015 releases, this year LG seems content to continue largely doing the same as it has in past years.

Sony

sony xperia z5 & z5 compact & Z5 premium aa 18

For the most part, Sony has followed a similar strategy as LG and HTC in 2015, namely kept things pretty status quo. While the Japanese giant did slow things down a little by only releasing the Xperia Z4 (aka Z3+ or Z4V) in select regions, the company has continued to push the same overall aesthetics and experience. That said, the latter half of 2015 has now introduced a small shift for the company.

The Xperia Z5 family largely looks the same as its predecessors, but the company did surprise the world with the first 4K smartphone, dubbed the Z5 Premium. The software experience has also become even more stock-like than in the past, retaining many of the menu choices and material design influences found in stock Android. The biggest difference is now custom icons and the presence of select Sony apps.

The rest of the pack

ZTE Axon Phone-2

These are obviously far from the only OEMs out there, though they are arguably the biggest and most popular, at least in the western world.

As an honorable mention, ZTE has made some pretty big shifts this year with the Axon, a nearly OnePlus One-priced flagship with a lot of potential. Huawei is also looking to turn its attention further to the North American market releasing at least a few US-focused devices this year, and will introduce a Nexus flagship later this month, at least if rumors prove correct.

We’ve also seen Alcatel change its direction by bringing us the Idol 3, one of the first Alcatel OneTouch devices to actually be worth our attention, due to a competition of good looks, solid hardware, and an aggressive price. And then there’s Asus, which has kept a similar direction in 2015, but taken it to a whole new level with the ZenFone 2.

Who is heading in the right direction, who isn’t?

To be fair, the answer to that question is completely subjective. Looking at the strategies, Samsung is the OEM that has made the most aggressive changes this year, though it remains unseen if whether or not these changes will truly pay off in 2015 and beyond. Motorola has kept to its guns, while making a few refinements in its strategy that has really put the company in a good place. LG falls somewhere in the middle.

With minor changes in strategy, LG has yet to “fall on hard times”, but the LG G4 hasn’t been a runaway success either. That said, LG has the Nexus 5x and likely one other flagship coming our way before the end of the year that could help further push the company upward in market dominance. Out of the bigger OEMs, it is Sony and HTC that have disappointed the most this year. Though the two companies are both falling further down the ladder, neither seems to be making the bold moves needed to turn their perspective ships around.
