Dell’s next XPS 12 looks like a Microsoft Surface rival

Dell's leaked XPS 12

Wondering why Dell is cool with selling Microsoft’s Surface Pro when it doesn’t have a direct equivalent right now? This might be why. Giga claims to have leaked details of a reborn XPS 12 that would ditch the convertible laptop design in favor of the Surface’s tablet-plus-keyboard combo, right down to the kickstand. Yes, Dell appears to be taking a page from Lenovo’s book and competing with Microsoft’s 2-in-1 PC on its home turf. Not that this would be a direct clone, mind you. The XPS 12 reportedly touts a color-accurate 4K touchscreen with a super-thin, XPS 13-style bezel. You’d also get a Thunderbolt 3 connector (great for docking a slew of devices using just one cable) and a sharper 8-megapixel rear camera.

There’s no mention of pricing. The presences of a 4K screen and Thunderbolt suggest that the XPS 12 won’t be cheap, but the cost will depend on both the choice of processor (a Core M or low-voltage Core i seems likely) and the amount of built-in storage. However, there’s no question about availability: the leak hints at a release in October, right when the Surface Pro reaches Dell’s corporate sales channels. While it’s doubtful that Dell built the new XPS with its Microsoft partnership in mind, it’ll conveniently serve as an alternative when you want a little more oomph from your pro tablet.

Cyanogen OS to integrate Cortana?

Not too long ago, Cyanogen made deals with Microsoft to pre-load their apps like Skype, Bing and Office on the commercial OS (not the custom ROM). Microsoft also recently released a beta version of their homebrewn Cortana assistant for Android phones. They are now reportedly expanding this deal to integrate Cortana into the popular Cyanogen OS that ships on phones like the OnePlus.

Previously, Cortana was unlikely to offer competition against Google Now, mainly because of how it’s integrated, but this new deal could see that change.

In an interview with International Business Times, the Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster revealed that Microsoft and Cyanogen are working to bring Microsoft’s digital assistant over to the OS but in a way that goes much deeper than the current Cortana Android app.

Natural language coupled with intelligence is very important but as an application it doesn’t really work because you need to be embedded into the framework of the OS because that is where you get all the signal from the services that makes that intelligence smarter.

Quite simply put, this means that Cortana will be able to properly compete with its competition.

How do you feel? Is this ruining Cyanogen with more boatware?

Nova Launcher feature to normalize icons

nova_launcher_icon_normalization_banner

When Google released their new logo recently, it came with a host of updates to their app icons on mobile devices. These changes in turn have drawn attention to the varying sizes of icons on Android devices. While some users welcome the variety offered by the operating system, others seem to be irked by this and would prefer to see icons presented more consistently similar to some other operating systems. Nova Launcher sees this as an opportunity and has started beta testing a new feature to normalize icon sizes.

To make this happen, Nova looked to Google’s Material design guidelines that set forth sizes for basic shapes like squares, rectangles and circles. Nova is using some algorithms that will examine the shapes of app icons to compare them against the standard dimensions and adjust accordingly. One of the challenges is handling icons that are unusual shapes, like triangles, or that have protrusions. Nova thinks their algorithms will be good enough to identify the underlying, basic icon shape and adjust them.

Sources have noted that the goal is not to make the icons all the same size, though they will end up close, but to present a consistent visual experience to users.

Nova indicates they are also planning to add in support for Marshmallow with the next beta and features like opening animations. The beta is expected to be released in a couple weeks.

Are more consistently sized icons a look you would be interested in seeing on your Android device?

A new Google Nexus Player is on its way according to FCC listing

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

It’s hard to tell whether the Google Nexus Player was a success or not, but it must have been enough of a success as a FCC filing spotted on the certifications website appears to suggest that a new Google Nexus Player is on its way. There are a couple of clues that suggest that the device in the listing will be a Nexus Player – the device listed will support 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi, Bluetooth and will have 1 LAN port, 4 USB ports and a microUSB port. The other thing which is fairly suggestive is the design on the bottom of the device:

new Google Nexus PlayerWhile it’s not concrete evidence, it does seem to suggest that the device described here is a round device like last year’s Nexus Player. The other hint here is that devices that pass through the FCC are usually ready for a release in the US, and it’s possible that the new Nexus Player will be announced alongside the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 on September 29th, which makes sense given last year’s Nexus Player was announced with the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.

City of LA’s electric vehicle fleet includes a Tesla Model S

A Tesla Motors Inc. Charging Station Ahead Of Earnings Figures

For anyone who thought that Los Angeles’ efforts to turn its traffic problems green would end after a partnership with Waze, think again. The City of Angels has committed to leasing 160 battery-powered electric vehicles and 128 plug-in hybrids for its municipal fleet. A post on the LAPD blog says that the police, fire, general services, water and power departments will split the former, while the general services will also take all of the latter. Mayor Eric Garcetti says that this move puts LA closer to its goal of becoming the “most sustainable city in America.”

For now it has to settle for having the largest city-owned fleet of battery-powered rides. The blog post goes on to say that as part of this Sustainable City pLAn (not a typo), it also has a shiny new Tesla Model S P85D and BMW i for “testing and research.” Hopefully that includes seeing how effective Ludicrous Mode is against fleeing perps.
