Amazon is rumoured to be preparing a $50 tablet for this Northern Fall

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

The last Amazon device I remember talking about was the much maligned Amazon Fire Phone, which was a rather terrible experiment for everybody involved – I’m sure there have been some Fire tablets released since then, but the Fire Phone was the one that really stuck out, for better or worse. Thankfully, it sounds like Amazon’s next endeavor is going to be more of a safe bet as Amazon is rumoured to be preparing a $50 tablet, which I think is something we can all get excited for.

For anyone not up to speed, Amazon tablets are actually quite good – the only downside is that they have a forked version of Android on them meaning you don’t have the benefit of Google apps, at least not natively. This pitfall aside, Amazon tablets have always managed to put up some impressive specifications for the price and we’re sure that a $50 tablet would be more of the same, and an absolute bargain with Holiday season right around the corner. The $50 tablet is said to be released sometime this Northern Fall, which is right around now, so keep your eyes and ears open.

What do you think about a $50 Amazon tablet? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

GoPro’s 16-camera rig for Google Jump VR costs $15,000

Google launched Jump, a platform for VR video, back at its developer conference in May — along with a slightly bonkers camera rig called Odyssey co-designed with GoPro. Today, prospective content creators can put their name down to get early access to the hardware (pictured after the break), which GoPro tells us is only available in limited quantity. Google already did something similar, but this time the scheme appears to be specifically aimed at professional partners. We also get to know a little bit more about the rig, including its cost: an eye-watering (at least for us amateurs) $15,000.

What do you get for your money? Well, 16 GoPros for starters (that accounts for $8,000 of the Odyssey’s cost at the camera’s $500 retail price). The rest of the package includes connectivity mounts (“bacpacs”) for each camera, cables, memory cards, a pelican case and (of course) the cylindrical Odyssey rig itself. Once combined, the rig will shoot 2.7K video in 4:3 aspect ratio. It is, of course, all about the 360-degree/3D experience, and Google with GoPro hopes that Odyssey can raise the bar in terms of immersive video quality.

In addition to the hardware, the Jump platform includes a video “assembler” that stitches all the files together to create one seamless globe, and then, of course a player on YouTube which will include support for viewing via Cardboard in stereoscopic/3D, or regular “flat” viewing via desktop or YouTube app (without Cardboard). You can see the Odyssey in action via the video below (desktop users can view in Chrome, and “look around” using the ASWD keys).

GoPro tells us the need for 16 cameras comes down to the specification of Jump (Google), and the assembler software. For those curious, all those cameras combined provide an output at 2K x 2K over/under (rather than side-by-side) panoramic MPEG4 video at 150Mbit/s or 8K x 8K at 600Mbit/s according to GoPro’s spec-sheet.

Odyssey is separate from GoPro’s own spherical video solution that only uses six cameras, which hopefully will make it more accessible when it finally becomes available. GoPro bought Kolor, a panoramic video company back in April, one month prior to Jump’s announcement. No doubt the camera-maker will be keen to make use of that new software with its own VR and immersive video, hopefully at a more amateur-friendly price point.

If you’re interested in early access to Odyssey, you can apply to be involved here, as long as you’re based in U.S., Canada, UK, the EU, Japan, or Brazil (or at least, can pretend you are).

One of Japan’s lovable store robots just got drunkenly punted

Just one month after Hitchbot was brutally attacked in Philadelphia, a shop assistant robot in Japan has also suffered the wrath of angry humans with a grudge. According to Japan Times, a drunken 60-year-old entered a Softbank store and, after an angry exchange, punted one of the company’s cute Pepper robots. The kick-happy individual may not have thought too hard about the unit’s humanity (or otherwise) but it’s another in a growing list of anti-robot acts. A recent Wired piece points out that people’s fears about futuristic AI stealing our jobs might be unfounded, since more people will be required to maintain our new overlords. As for the victim in this incident, Pepper’s family have asked for privacy, but Japan Times believes that the robot is currently moving slower than normal, and may have suffered damage to its internals. Aww.

NFL overhauls its digital properties ahead of new season

The 2015-2016 season of the National Football League is about to begin, with the opening game scheduled for Thursday, September 10th. That means new apps, new services and, best of all, more ways to watch free games while on the go. Today, NFL announced that it has completely redesigned NFL Mobile, which will start featuring NFL Now, the league’s online video network. As a result, Now won’t be a standalone product any longer, as the NFL is making an effort to streamline its digital properties. What’s more, the premium version of NFL Now, which offers access to NFL Films and other original content, is now going to be integrated into NFL GamePass. Pre-Season Live, AudioPass and GameRewind will also be a part of GamePass going forward.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, NFL Mobile is giving Verizon customers the ability to watch games for free through their mobile device. Starting this season, the NFL will let these users stream Thursday, Saturday and Monday Night Football, as well as in-market Sunday afternoon game, on iOS or Android smartphones. (The NFL says this won’t work on tablets.) That’s great news for Verizon customers, since they won’t have to worry about paying a subscription fee for streaming those games.

Expect of all of these changes to roll out over the next few hours.

Pornography app holds users hostage, demands $500 ransom

According to security company ZScaler, a malicious Android app disguised as a pornography viewer has been making the rounds. “Adult Player” is meant to offer viewers an adult video player, but instead turns pleasure into displeasure by taking sneaky pics with the front facing camera.

The app then holds the phone hostage and forces users to pay a $US500 ransom through PayPal. It stays persistent even if the user attempts to uninstall to, and frequently pops up over the screen, meaning it can’t be ignored.

The app is not available on the Google Play Store and can be installed from a web browser, which is poor security practice. To avoid being a victim of such ransomware, ZScaler says it is always best to download apps only from the Google Play Store, and ensuring the “Unknown Sources” option under the “Security” settings is unchecked.

This is not the first time we’ve seen apps like this. Perhaps Android M’s upgraded permission manager can prevent this. What do you think?

A closer look at the sleek and sexy Huawei Watch (IFA 2015)

The Huawei Watch was first announced earlier this year during MWC, but its delayed availability to September gave the Chinese OEM the opportunity to showcase their Android Wear smartwatch once again at IFA 2015, this time with a more refined and slightly different design, along with a slew of color and finish options. Here is another look at the Huawei Watch!

huawei watch ifa aa (6 of 23)

The watch that we all fell in love with at MWC 2015 now comes with numerous finishes, color options, and watch bands. The version we are looking at here is the black version with a metal band that comes with a deployment clasp. There are certain subtle changes to the design, but nothing that is very obvious or noticeable right off the bat. This is probably the only smartwatch currently available that takes on the look and feel of a traditional luxury watch, but that is reflected in the price point of this device as well.

As a refresher of the specifications, the Huawei Watch comes with a 1.4-inch full circle AMOLED display with a 400 x 400 resolution, with its resulting pixel density of 286 ppi, one of the highest seen with a wearable right now. Under the hood is a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of on-board storage, and a 300 mAh battery. The Huawei Watch is also the first Android Wear device to offer support, albeit basic in nature, for iOS, helping to start bridging the gap between Android and iOS for the wearable game.

Putting the watch on your wrist for the first time makes you realize that this is the kind of smartwatch you’ve been waiting for. The device doesn’t feature any bells and whistles beyond what you may be used to from your own Android Wear smartwatch experience thus far, but it is really the casing and the design that has led to people being enamored with this device.

huawei watch ifa aa (21 of 23)

The Huawei Watch will be available in the US on September 17, with Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, set to receive the device by the end of the month. The price points of the Huawei Watch vary quite a lot, given the different color, finish, and watch strap combinations that are possible, with the base model, that features a silver metal body and a leather band, priced at $349. Switching out the leather band for a basic metal band will set you back an additional $50, but the prices changing according to the type of metal bands you choose. The version that is seen in the video above will be available for $449, and the pricing goes up to $799 for the higher luxury models.

So there you have it for this closer look at the Huawei Watch! Stay tuned with Android Authority as we continue to bring you more great coverage from IFA 2015, the full comprehensive review of the Huawei Watch, and a whole lot more.

Hands-on with the Asus ZenWatch 2 at IFA 2015

Just like Huawei with its Watch, Asus took its sweet time bringing the ZenWatch 2 to market, after announcing it in early June at Computex. While we’ll still have to wait another month until the ZenWatch 2 hits the shelves, we had the chance to play with the two variants of the smartwatch at IFA in Berlin, and these are our impressions.

asus zenwatch 2 ifa aa (11 of 23)

First up, Asus appears to have realized that one size does not fit all when it comes to wearables, as the ZenWatch 2 is available in a slightly more petite variant, featuring a 37 mm face and an 18 mm band, in addition to the familiar, 41 mm/22 mm model. It’s commendable that Asus is trying to cater to more types of users, but I will say that the increased thickness of both ZenWatch versions is a bit of a letdown, as the slick, wrist-hugging profile was one of the best things about the original ZenWatch, in my opinion.

asus zenwatch 2 ifa aa (3 of 23)

The specifications of the ZenWatch 2 are pretty close to what you had last year. Notable improvements include better resistance to elements (IP67) and better battery life, along a new way to charge the smartwatch using a magnetic connector, as opposed to the unwieldy cradle from before. Asus claims you should be able to get two days of battery life out of the ZenWatch 2, especially when using the ambient mode heavily. You should also be able to fill up 50 percent of the battery in a little over half an hour, thanks to the new charging port.

asus zenwatch 2 ifa aa (5 of 23)

All in all, this refresh is largely about the design, which is now more refined and comes with more customization options. Joining a trend that we can only salute, Asus is making multiple color options and bands of various materials available, and that should make it easy to adapt the ZenWatch 2 to your particular style and image.

asus zenwatch 2 ifa aa (23 of 23)

Asus has updated the software side of the ZenWatch 2, through the inclusion of some of its own apps on the smartwatch, and a capable companion app for your smartphone, that lets you do things like pick up the right watch face for the moment.

The 41 mm ZenWatch 2 will cost around $190 when it lands next month, while the smaller model will be roughly $170.

With the new Moto 360 and especially the Huawei Watch, the ZenWatch 2 has some very strong competition in the Android Wear race. But Asus’ take on the concept benefits from a lower price tag, and an aesthetic that will appeal to those who look for a non-traditionally looking smartwatch. Is that enough of a differentiator? Let us know your thoughts!
