Finally, a 4K TV worth watching

If curved screens and the apparently threat of 8K leave you cold, maybe Philips’ focus on the back of its UHD TVs will get you to open up your wallet. The company’s brought its crazy, dreamy projection-backed prototype TV into mass-production in the form of a 65-inch UHDTV. Pico projectors dotted around the perimeter of the Ambilux TV transmit the image (which can be broadcast TV, media, games or apps) outwards behind the frame. The gif shows the result: a constantly changing glow of glorious multicolored light. It’s like an optical smoothie for the eyes. The TVs will go on sale in Europe before the end of the year.

Rumored Nokia C1 photographed in the wild

nokia logo mwc 2015

Unfortunately, last week’s Noka C1 render turned out to just be a fan concept, but this week we have a picture of the rumored smartphone in the wild, which is much trickier to fake. Somewhat oddly though, the pictures share a lot of common elements to the fan made renders, so I’m taking this with a pinch of salt.

The photographs give us a quick look at the front and back of the phone, where we can see a rear camera with LED flash, a front camera in the top left and a couple of buttons, possibly the volume rocker, on the side of the handset. The bezel design seems very similar to the render, but it’s impossible to tell if we are looking at a metal uni-body or just a plastic case.

Nokia C1 leaked pictures

The pictures also come with their own set of rumors. The smartphone is apparently sporting a 5-inch 1080p display, rather than the 720p panel that was previously mentioned. The phone is also said to run Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, and it certainly seems to have a rather stock looking settings menu. The Intel SoC and 2GB RAM rumor also persists.

If this is a real handset, the Nokia C1 won’t arrive until sometime next year anyway. However, it could mark Nokia’s independent return to the smartphone market. Remember, the company won’t be manufacturing the phone itself, instead Nokia will be licensing out its designs for other manufacturers to produce.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 review

Consumers were pleasantly surprised when Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note in early 2014, with the extremely affordable smartphone offering specifications and features beyond what its price point would suggest. A year later, and the affordable smartphone segment has become increasingly competitive. At a price range below $200, where the original Redmi Note was once king, its successor, the Redmi Note 2, may have a harder go of it.

The follow up brings some key enhancements over the original, but is it enough to stand strong against the tough opposition? We find out, in this in-depth Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 review!

Design

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-19

Like its predecessor, the Redmi Note 2 features a large 5.5-inch display, but borrows its design language cues from Xiaomi’s newer releases, like the Xiaomi Mi 4i. There is a striking resemblance between the two smartphones, including the soft touch plastic rear with a matte finish, but while the smaller smartphone comes with an unibody design, the rear cover of the Redmi Note 2 can be removed, allowing for access to the battery, microSD card slot, and dual micro-SIM card slots.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-13

Going around the device, the volume rocker is found above the power button on the right side, and the headphone jack and microUSB port are placed up top and at the bottom respectively. The Redmi Note 2 also adds an IR blaster, and the capacitive navigation keys up front below the display are now illuminated and of a red color. The power button and volume rocker don’t offer as much tactile feedback as one may hope for, but there are certainly no issues as far as responsiveness is concerned.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-22

Despite featuring the same display size, Redmi Note 2 comes with a smaller footprint when compared to its predecessor, and manages to be significantly thinner and lighter as well, allowing for a far improved handling experience. The matte finish on the rear helps with the grip as well, and some users should also be able to manage comfortable one-handed use with the device.

Display

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-23

The Redmi Note 2 comes with a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display like its predecessor, but sees a bump in the resolution from 720p to Full HD, resulting in a higher pixel density of 401 ppi. This is a significant upgrade, but a necessary one, given the fact that some of the competition in this price range also feature 1080p screens. The display is of course, sharp and offers excellent viewing angles, but the contrast and vividness of the colors could have used a boost. It’s definitely not a bad display by any means, but it certainly isn’t the best out there, even when compared to other similarly-priced smartphones like the Meizu M2 Note.

Performance

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-2

Under the hood, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 comes with an octa-core MediaTek MT6795 Helio X10 processor, clocked at either 2 GHz or 2.2 GHz depending on the version of the device you pick, backed by the PowerVR G6200 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. The processing package is another marked improvement from its predecessor, and as such, addresses all the performance concerns that plagued the original.

Day to day performance with the Redmi Note  was excellent, and everything remained smooth and snappy throughout, and things should get even better with the upcoming rollout of MIUI 7. The device also handles multi-tasking well, but there were a few instances of stutter and lag when it came to gaming, which is a bit of a let down. The phone also did heat up during processor-intensive tasks, but it wasn’t so much as to make the device uncomfortable to hold.

Hardware

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-14

The Redmi Note 2 comes with either 16 GB or 32 GB versions, with the top-end model featuring 4G LTE connectivity with both SIM slots, and also comes with a standard suite of connectivity options. Given that this is the Chinese model of the phone, there is expandable storage available via microSD card by up to 32 GB, but it is unclear whether the international version will have this feature. With this version, it was possible to only get HSPA+ connectivity on the AT&T network, so it is a good idea to check for compatibility with your home networks before picking up this phone.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-9

The IR blaster functions as expected, although the in-built Mi Remote app may not be compatible with some televisions. Third-party apps are available however, to allow for support with many other TVs. Overall, this is a very nice addition, which isn’t expected with a device that falls in this price range. The rear speaker of the Redmi Note 2 sounds really good, and offers adequate volume to be heard even in somewhat noisy environments. The distortion isn’t as much as seen with previous Xiaomi smartphones, and the only drawback here is its placement on the rear. This is certainly one of the better audio experiences that can be had when compared to other devices that are priced at below $200.

The Redmi Note 2 comes with a 3,060 mAh battery, but despite its size, the battery life isn’t as good as expected. With Wi-Fi on for most of the day, and the screen brightness set to auto, the phone was able to manage 4 hours of screen-on time at most, and lasted for around 12 hours overall. Toning down the usage resulted in the battery life going up to 15 hours, but with only 2 hours and 15 minutes of screen-on time. The battery drain is surprisingly significant when the phone is in the idle state, but hopefully, this is a software issue that can be fixed in future updates. If battery life is a concern, the battery of the Redmi Note 2 is removable, which gives you the option of carrying around a spare.

Camera

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-11

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 comes with a 13 MP rear camera with a LED flash and phase detection auto focus, and also packs a 5 MP front-facing unit. While the auto focus is very fast, the actual performance of the camera itself is just about average, as there is a noticeable lack in detail and sharpness in images. As far as the camera application is concerned, there are many different camera modes available, and the manual mode allows for more granular control over aspects like white balance and ISO.

Software

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-17

The Redmi Note 2 ships with MIUI 6 based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, but will soon receive an official update to MIUI 7. MIUI is a very different experience from stock Android, but does have a lot of positives, such as the ability to re-organize the quick toggles, adjust the brightness even when auto brightness is on, and also customize what information is seen in the status bar, along with the option to change the display color temperature or contrast.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-25

You can also change the look and feel of the user interface by taking advantage of the robust theme store that is available, as well as change the functions of the capacitive keys. Useful applications that are pre-installed include the Mi Sound Enhancer and the Xiaomi Backup app, that lets you back up app data, as well as launcher layouts, settings, and account information, without requiring root access to do so.

Of course, MIUI is not without its drawbacks either, such as the fact that you cannot dismiss notifications from the lock screen, or access any other app from it other than the camera. There is also no app drawer, leaving users dependent on folders to keep things organized and clutter-free. A significant drawback with this Chinese version of the phone is also the lack of any Google Apps, but if you pick up the device after its official release in international markets, this won’t be an issue.

Pricing and final thoughts

The Chinese version of the device starts at just $140, with the Prime version, which comes with 32 GB of storage and both SIM slots capable of LTE support, priced at $156, and the price point is expected to be quite similar with the international version of the phone itself. Available color options currently include white, black, yellow, blue, or pink.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2-21

So there you have it for this closer look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2! This smartphone is an excellent option, especially when considering its price, with it featuring a nice design, powerful processing package, and great software experience. The average camera performance is to be expected, but the disappointing battery life is certainly a letdown however. Overall, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is one of the better options available in this price range, and things should be even better with the international version of the phone, which will come with Google Apps pre-installed as well.

Deal: Last chance to get a lifetime subscription to SkyHub Cloud Unlimited Backup for only $89.99

eba7dda1b9b15d4dfc90c121cc1ae36d2ccf346a_main_hero_image 2

Finding the right cloud storage solution comes with its hurdles. Some services are great, but they will end up costing you a good chunk of cash after a prolonged period of time. This is because the popular services (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) sell monthly/yearly subscriptions that need to keep being renewed. Furthermore, these packages usually offer a limit in storage space, often forcing you to buy  into higher plans.

The AA Deals Store has an offer that can help you kiss all those annoyances goodbye. How does a lifetime subscription to unlimited cloud storage sound? That is exactly what you can get with SkyHub Cloud Unlimited Backup, if you pay $89.99. By the way, that is an 85% discount over the original $600 price point!

There’s no tricks or catch here. You can store as much data as you want from up to 3 computers, as well as all your devices, discs and thumb drives. And this will be stored in SkyHub’s servers forever. That’s not really where the convenience in SkyHub Cloud Unlimited Backup ends, though. After having all your data stored in the cloud, your files can be easily accessed from your Android and iOS devices, as well as the web.

There’s really not much convincing to do here, right? This is a great deal if you know you will need a cloud backup solution for a long time. Just hit the AA Deals Store and sign up if you are interested. But you better hurry, this deal ends just a few hours from now!

HTC dropped from Taiwan’s TWSE 50 Index

HTC logo aa 1It hasn’t been easy for HTC recently and it looks like things aren’t getting any better. Following a difficult few years, including several quarters of bad sales, the maker of the HTC One range of flagship Android smartphones has seen an over 60 percent devaluation in its stock price, which has effectively left the brand with no value. Today, as the share price slipped even lower, HTC has been dropped from the TWSE 50 Index, the stock market index of Taiwan’s 50 largest firms.

Earlier this year HTC posted an operating loss of $166 million which dampened the chances of the company’s recovery. Last year it managed to make a small profit after a number of quarterly losses and it looked like recovery was possible. However, its latest iteration of the HTC One, the One M9 has suffered severely disappointing sales figures since its launch, with one report highlighting that shipments had fallen by some 43 percent compared with the last generation One M8.

As a result, HTC announced that it would reduce its workforce by some 15 percent in a bid to cut costs and increase its chance of profitability. The problem is that HTC’s share price is now so low, that it is less than the amount of cash it holds on deposit. This means that investors now consider the company to be, in theory at least, worthless.

htc-operating-profit-graph-16x9

Now that it has dropped out of the TWSE 50 index, it is possible that the share price may drop even lower, mainly because foreign investors are hesitant of dealing with companies not listed on the main Taiwan index. This opens up the company to the threat of a hostile takeover.

HTC has tried to fight its way out of trouble with a big budget advertising campaign. Back in 2013 HTC launched a $1 billion advertising campaign with Robert Downey Jr. His latest adverts for the company were released earlier this year. However even $1 billion and Robert Downey Jr. weren’t enough.

“While the current market climate is challenging, I firmly believe the measures we are putting in place to streamline our operations, improve efficiency and focus, and increase our momentum will start to show results over the coming quarters,” said Cher Wang, chairwoman and chief executive of HTC.

HTC has now been moved into the smaller Mid-Cap 100 Index, which contains 100 companies, however their combined value is only 20% of the whole market.

Apple Making Big Hiring Push in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

ios_9_proactiveApple is stepping up its efforts to recruit employees focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning, reports Reuters. The report suggests Apple is looking to challenge Google’s lead in features such as Google Now that learn to anticipate smartphone users’ needs, something Apple is starting to address in iOS 9 with its new “Proactive” feature.

As part of its push, the company is currently trying to hire at least 86 more employees with expertise in the branch of artificial intelligence known as machine learning, according to a recent analysis of Apple job postings. The company has also stepped up its courtship of machine-learning PhD’s, joining Google, Amazon, Facebook and others in a fierce contest, leading academics say.

Apple’s machine learning efforts are in large part built with Siri in mind, and Siri should play an important role in this Wednesday’s media event, as indicated by the event invitation’s tagline.

Reuters notes that Apple faces a challenge with machine learning due to its focus on privacy and reluctance to tap into all possible data sources. For example, with the Proactive features of iOS 9, Apple is primarily keeping all of the data and analysis on the user’s phone, enhancing privacy but limiting some of what can be learned from data passed to the cloud.

Apple’s strict policies not only limit what can be learned from user data but also discourage some machine learning experts from pursuing positions with Apple due to that lack of access. Still, Apple is said to be opening up about machine learning, engaging with academic programs in its efforts to lure talent and already having tripled or quadrupled the size of its machine learning team over the last few years.

Apple’s New Austin Campus With On-Site Health & Fitness Centers Nearing Completion

While much of the real estate focus for Apple has been on Campus 2 in Cupertino and surrounding areas, the company has also been working hard on expanding its presence in Austin, Texas where it has for many years housed much of its operations and support efforts. Back in 2012, Apple announced a $300 million commitment to expand in Austin with a new seven-building campus an up to an additional 3,600 employees.

austin_campus_1
In June 2014, Tim Cook visited the campus as the first buildings opened, and the Austin American-Statesman has gotten a look inside the campus as Apple is rapidly moving toward completion with four buildings done and the remaining three to be completed in about a year.

Along a winding road off Research Boulevard in Northwest Austin, Apple has quietly transformed 38 acres of wooded land into its second-largest operation in the world.

When the California-based technology giant completes the campus in 2016, it will include seven limestone-and-glass office buildings with a combined 1.1 million square feet of space with restaurants, smoothie and coffee bars along with a full-scale gym with two saunas and a spa-like wellness center with services including medical, dental and eye care, acupuncture and massage.

apple_austin_fitness
Apple reportedly remains on track to receive a $35 million tax break for reaching its hiring goals and has been working closely with the city to bring on local suppliers from the community.

apple_austin_hallway
Even as work continues on the new campus, Apple is looking elsewhere in Austin for further growth opportunities, purchasing a nearby 350,000 square foot campus it had already been leasing and leasing a new 216,000 square foot office building elsewhere in Austin.
