Galaxy S6 Edge Plus inboxing video

Samsung has already released a selection of promotional videos for the new Galaxy S6 Edge+ smartphone, but its new ‘inboxing/unboxing’ video also gives us a nice look at the engineering that has gone into the inside of the handset, as well as what’s inside the box.

Samsung’s video takes us through the piece of piece construction of the Galaxy S6 Edge+ internal hardware, by hand. We can spot the fingerprint scanner, main board, camera modules and the wireless charging coil all neatly packed in, before the handset makes its way to be unpacked again. This time complete with a view of all the extras included inside the box, alongside the S6 Edge+.

If you love your hardware, the video below will be right up your street. If you are curious about what is inside the Galaxy Note 5 box, be sure to check out our own unboxing video too.

Samsung has certainly been trying to improve consumer perceptions about the build quality of its smartphones with the move over to metal and glass case materials and the sleek looking dual-edge display this generation. Do you think that Samsung is building the some of the highest quality smartphone’s around right now?

7 Android facts that you may not have known

Lollipop statue Android Google straight on

As part of its plan to enter the smartphone market, Google acquired a relatively small company named Android Inc. during the summer of 2005. About three years later, the first commercially available Android-powered smartphone went on sale. A bona fide hit, the HTC Dream was an important piece to a massive puzzle that would have a major impact on the software industry as a whole.

Although it’s widely recognized as a mobile operating system, Android is used across a variety of different hardware platforms, including smartwatches, desktops, notebooks, smart TVs and game consoles. With such a robust wheelhouse, Google’s thriving OS has racked up a lot of accomplishments in a very short time. Google recently announced that Android 6.0 will officially be named Marshmallow and as a bit of a high-five to the search giant and its newly flavored operating system, we’ve compiled a list of Android factoids and milestones that you may not know about.

Android hasn’t always been named after sweets

android-versions-from-cupcake-to-ice-cream-sandwich-2

The very first public release of Android was version 1.5 Cupcake. After its success, Google went on to continue naming its mobile operating system after dessert treats. However, during the platform’s early development days, pre-commercial software versions carried internal robot-themed codenames like “Astro Boy,” “Bender,” and even “R2-D2.” After Android’s first public release in 2008, Google decided to retain its dessert-themed branding scheme, and has since named its software sweet foods in alphabetical order. In addition to commercial releases, an early software update for Android carried a snack inspired moniker. Initially released as software update for the HTC Dream, a patch internally referred to as “Petit Four” was named after a small French dessert.

Honeycomb is the only Android version never officially released for smartphones

android-honeycomb-feature-screen-shot-2011-01-05-at-8.31.04-pm-rm-eng

In early 2011, Google launched Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Designed specifically for tablets, this large screen-focused operating system’s inaugural device was the Motorola Xoom. Unfortunately, Honeycomb received mostly negative reviews from critics and users. Google quickly replaced its ill-received software with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Instead of working on another tablet-centric operating system, the company elected to add large display support to all Android releases going forward.

Over one billion devices activated

1-billion-active-users

Ever gone for a night out on the town and notice that a lot of people are using Android devices? Don’t worry, it’s not just your favorite pub or eatery being flooded by smartphones and tablets running Mountain View’s flexible software. Just shy of two years ago, newly crowned Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that there have been over 1 billion Android activations. To help put this figure in perspective, it’s estimated that the world’s current population is around 7.3 billion people.

Android has more apps than its competitors

Google Play Store Logo

Google’s Android Market went live back in 2008, just a few months after Apple’s App Store. But despite launching in such close proximity, the search company’s digital storefront just recently overtook its main competitor. Rebranded in 2012 as Google Play, Android’s software depot now offers around 1.5 million applications. If you’re looking to add some new icons to your device’s homescreen, here are a few of our favorites.

Early Android smartphone designs looked very different

Sooner 1

The HTC Dream is known for its sliding AZERTY keyboard and 3.2-inch touchscreen, but the device’s ancestors offered something very different. Pictured above is a shot of the HTC EXCA 300 aka the “Sooner.” This “Android reference device” appeared to draw inspiration from earlier BlackBerry and Palm OS handsets. Equipped with an OMAP 850 processor and a whopping 64MB of RAM, this unreleased gadget helped pave the way for some of the Android smartphones that people enjoy today.

Who designed the Android logo and what is its name?

Android-logo

Just like its software, the Android platform’s mascot is also open source. This is why we’ve seen it dressed up and restyled so many times over without any type of real backlash from Google. The company’s little green robot was designed with a unisex-like tin can shaped body that takes cues from the male and female icons found hanging outside of restroom doors. It was created to be simple and easily recognized. But who designed it?

A graphic designer by the name of Irina Blok is responsible for the Android logo’s likeness. When developing the popular pictogram she and her design team studied sci-fi toys and movies about space for inspiration. As for the robot’s name, it actually doesn’t have one. Although it’s often referred to as “Andy the Android,” the Android brand’s mascot doesn’t have an official name. However, Google internally refers to its green machine as “Bugdroid.”

Android’s arrival resulted in Eric Schmidt’s departure from Apple’s board of directors

google-glass-eric-schmidt-1

Google and Apple haven’t always been locked a nasty blood feud. In fact, prior to the release of Android, the search giant’s former CEO, Eric Schmidt was a member of Apple’s board of directors. However, less than a year after Android’s launch, the Google executive and the Cupertino firm mutually agreed to part ways. Here’s a statement from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs discussing the matter:

Eric has been an excellent Board member for Apple, investing his valuable time, talent, passion and wisdom to help make Apple successful. Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board.

Android has been available to consumers for almost seven years and boy has it accomplished a lot in such a short period. The platform currently has the largest number of global smartphone shipments and it’s making tech affordable in emerging markets. What started out as an operating system for smartphones has stretched to multiple platforms and doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

Apple Shares Drop Below $100 Amid Wider Stock Market Downturn

Apple shares dipped below $100 in pre-market trading today amid a wider Dow Jones and stock market downturn, with AAPL fluctuating around the $98-$100 mark prior to the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange opening bell at 9:30 AM Eastern. Apple shares last dipped below $100 in October 2014, four months after opening at $92.69 following a 7-for-1 split that took effect in June 2014.

AAPL Dow Jones DownturnApple shares closed at $105.76 on Friday
Apple shares closed at $105.76 on Friday and are down over $35 from a 52-week high of $134.54 set on April 28, but many analysts remain bullish about the stock and believe that the current dip presents a buying opportunity for investors. The company is expected to announce new iPhones and iPads alongside the launch of iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan through the end of October.

Last March, Apple replaced AT&T on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is currently down over 500 points. The Dow Jones provides a price-weighted average of 30 significant stocks traded on the NYSE and NASDAQ, including American Express, Boeing, Chevron, Coca-Cola, Disney, Exxon Mobil, Goldman Sachs, IBM, Intel, JPMorgan and Chase, Microsoft, Verizon and Visa.

Samsung is already testing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

One of Samsung‘s most famous (or infamous) moves this year has been to use its own in-house manufactured Exynos processors instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 that is in pretty much every other flagship smartphone to be released this year. While the move seems to have paid off this year, it looks like Samsung is still considering Qualcomm as a source for processor chips in next year’s flagships – so much so that Samsung is already testing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 which could end up in the Samsung Galaxy S7.

This much was already known to us from previous rumours, however it’s news to us that Samsung is already testing the processor so early – it’s likely this early testing that Samsung did on the Snapdragon 810 that alerted it to what it saw as potential issues. Of course, the bottom line is that these tests are likely going to help Samsung decide between the Snapdragon 820 and another of its own Exynos processors, but frankly we don’t care as long as it runs smoothly and doesn’t overheat.

Android Pay coming to US on August 26th, according to McDonald’s

It’s hard to get super excited about mobile payments, but Android Pay will give a large number of folks a new way to pay for things. A new document from McDonald’s unearthed by Android Police shows that the restaurant chain is preparing its employees to accept Android Pay starting on August 26th. Separately, another employee posted a photo on Reddit showing a similar document. For its part, Google has only said that Android Pay will arrive at the same time as Android 6 “Marshmallow,” but has yet to reveal the date.

The document could be old or premature, however. It also shows that Samsung Pay will arrive on August 21st, and several weeks ago Samsung said that its payment system would come on September 28th. The fact that August 26th is just days away and Google has no Android M event scheduled casts further doubt. That said, McDonald’s would be one of Google’s largest partners and the notice has appeared in multiple locations. When it does arrive, it will work in a similar way to Apple Pay — you just select the credit card you want to pay with, and tap your phone to the terminal to make the NFC handshake. After that, Android Pay will create one-time “token” for each transaction, preventing anyone from stealing your credit card info.

Android Pay could launch this Wednesday

android-pay-partners

One of the big announcements back at Google I/O a few months ago was the introduction of Android Pay, Google’s mobile payment solution which hopes to rival Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. According to an internal notice that’s being passed around McDonald’s in the US, the launch of Android Pay could be just days away.

android-pay-release-mcdonalds1

The internal notice says that Android Pay will launch on August 26th, following the launch of Samsung Pay on August 21st. While the latter is indeed incorrect (as Samsung Pay won’t launch until next month), it was the launch date of the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5 in the US, which is likely where the date came from.

McDonald’s is set to be a major partner for Android Pay, mainly thanks to over 14,000 restaurants in the US which will all accept Android Pay from launch. As a major partner, McDonald’s is likely to have been informed by Google in advance of Android Pay’s release and while the notice above looks questionable, an image posted on Reddit seemingly looks much more official and confirms the August 26th date.

It’s likely that August 26th was touted as a potential public release date for Android Pay but it’s unknown whether this date has slipped. Google has a certain penchant for launching new or updated apps on Wednesdays and given that August 26th is a Wednesday, it is possible we’ll see Android Pay launch in just two days’ time.

It’s difficult to know if we’ll actually see Android Pay hit the shops this week but we’ll have to wait until Wednesday to find out. What do you think? Would you use Android Pay and do you use any other mobile contactless payment solution? Let us know your views in the comments below!

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 off to a strong start in Korea

samsung galaxy note 5 first look aa (39 of 41)

Various news sources from South Korea are reporting a strong start to Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ sales in the country. This is clearly good news for Samsung, especially as the company has posted successive quarters of disappointing revenue. Average daily sales volume is said to have reached 25,000 units for the two models combined, more than a twofold increase over their predecessors’ launch results.

Combined sales of the two new Samsung smartphones are expected to have reached 100,000 units just a few days after launch. Two main reasons are being cited for the strong initial reports, a competitive price point and the introduction of Samsung Pay.

“Samsung’s decision to release the new Note and Galaxy a few months ahead of their international debut has had a good impact,” – official at SK Telecom

Beginning with price, the 32GB version of the Galaxy Note 5 retails for 889,800 won ($750), while the Galaxy S6 Edge+ starts at 940,000 won ($780). While still certainly not cheap, the Note 5 has launched at the lowest price yet for a Note smartphone in Korea, while the Galaxy S6 Edge+ retails for virtually the same price as the smaller Galaxy S6 Edge, offering consumers a larger screen size without an additional cost. Carriers have also been offering competitive contract options, with prices spotted below 500,000 won.

“Local carriers are launching aggressive promotional campaigns and this is another positive factor for Samsung. A customer who pays the highest monthly payment set by each carrier can purchase Note5 or Edge Plus for below 500,000 won” – official at LG Uplus

After some delay, Samsung Pay has also finally debuted in Korea with the launch of Samsung’s latest supersize smartphones, and this has also helped to boost the phones’ popularity. Samsung has teamed up with a number of partners in Korea to ensure widespread access to the service, which allows customers to make contact-less card payments using their phone and the built-in fingerprint scanner.

The payment system also supports the regular sized Galaxy S6 handsets and will be heading to the US next month. Additional countries are on the launch schedule, but no dates have been confirmed yet.

We will have to wait a bit longer to see how well the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ fair in the longer term and with their global release, especially as the Note 5 won’t be making an early appearance in every region. But it looks like Samsung’s latest phones are off to a good start.
