Report: Lenovo Mobile to be dissolved and sell all phones under the Motorola branding

motorola lenovo logo

When word broke that Lenovo would be purchasing Motorola from its former owner, there was a bit of shock, a bit of awe, and a bit of business-as-usual. It had long been asserted that Google purchased the company largely for its patents and more advanced research projects, and despite the favorable reception to products such as the Moto X, Moto G, and Moto E, the acquisition wasn’t exactly bringing home the bacon.

While Western markets might be largely unaware of Lenovo’s presence in the smartphone industry, it has been an established player for some time. Still, much as how ZTE initially chose to hide its branding on the Axon Phone, so too has Lenovo -arguably- needed a way to make the global market feel comforted and at-ease with its products.

One brand to rule (them both)

The solution now seems to be clear: a report from Xiaomi Times indicates Lenovo will soon dissolve its own smartphone branding, instead leaving everything to Motorola’s doings. Specifically, according to Lenovo Mobile Group President Chen Xudong, Lenovo Mobile will eventually be merged into Motorola. “The new organizational structure will be immediately released,” said the SEO in an interview with Interface News.

The decision was allegedly in planning for about a year, with the main problem having been trying to decide the best way to manage two separate companies that were, essentially, doing the same thing. Most of the management will apparently be comprised of Motorola staff, though Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing will still be calling all the shots.

Due to English-grammar related issues in the source report, it is unclear as to what will happen to the Zuk brand. A dual-branding is mentioned, with the idea that the it will become the company’s “flagship Internet brand” which might indicate it will be sold exclusively in key Asian territories online-only, and the Motorola branding will thus be used for all other devices sold in outside markets.

nexus-6-review-aa-13-of-14

Even the Nexus 6 made use of Motorola’s signature design language.

Digital Trends has a slightly clearer interpretation, suggesting that “Lenovo’s high-end mobile brand Zuk will also merge into Motorola, even though the Zuk Z1 gained more than two million pre-orders. We expect Zuk will continue to sell devices online even with the change in management, as it competes against Xiaomi and OnePlus in the growing online-only market.”

What would it mean for Motorola?

On paper, this is a great idea. Lenovo has some fantastic looking devices, though as a company it lacks the smartphone brand-awareness that would otherwise help it to be successful in the global market. Motorola in turn, has a very solid product line-up, but has only a sparse three or four offerings to choose from: those looking for anything outside the box have previously needed to resort to other OEMs to meet their demands.

In practice, only time will tell what kind of results occur. If Motorola will indeed be responsible for all development, this could mean some of Lenovo’s more creative products such as the Vibe Shot or dual-selfie Vibe S1 will be the last of their kind. Motorola, as it exists today, has a singular design language going on with its products, and has been using it for the last few years now. (Of course there are off-shoots like the Droid Turbo/Moto Maxx). Will this result in “Lenovo phones” being forced to confirm? Or could it mean that Motorola products will begin to evolve and differentiate?

lenovo vibe shot

The Lenovo Vibe Shot has a very nice design aesthetic going on.

As Digital Trends also makes note of, the Motorola brand has not been as successful in Asia as Lenovo’s, and thus the former will have a sizable task in trying to decide just what to do with the products that have already been established.

There is also the issue of tablets, namely in terms of what Lenovo will opt to do with them. Will Android devices be turned over to Motorola as well? Will they continue to be developed separately by Lenovo? While the former would see the return of Motorola to the tablet world, the latter might result in some device overlap or inconsistencies.

Suffice to say, there are a lot of exciting prospects at hand for this new stage, and we look forward to seeing what potential products are produced.

Somewhat skeptical?

Despite the more concrete nature of this report given it was allegedly based on an interview, it should be noted that we advise our readers to approach the issue with some skepticism: The idea of Lenovo Mobile being folded into Motorola is a big issue. A very big one. Given that all current mentions of this story cite the same original post, Xiaomi Times, we must ask why it is Lenovo itself has not issued an official Press Release to provide the information. There could have been a bad translation somewhere, for example.

Alternatively, this could be a solid fact in China and the issue is simply that an official English-language Press Release or formal announcement has yet to be made. We will update this story in the event there are any further developments or official corporate confirmation.

Moto G 2015 -20

The colorful new Moto G (2015)

At the very least, given Lenovo’s poor Q2 2015 performance results and potential for subsequent layoff announcements at Motorola, a more streamlined approach to its management and handling of the mobile market is definitely a good idea.

Let’s hear it!

What are your thoughts on the potential folding of Lenovo Mobile into the Motorola branding? Have you owned a Lenovo smartphone? Are you worried about what it might mean for Motorola products? Do you still regret Google’s sale? Please feel free to vote in the poll below, and leave us your comments and let us know!

LG made a solid, roll-up keyboard for your tablet or giant smartphone

To the untrained eye, LG’s new Bluetooth keyboard looks like a (very long) mobile battery, but that’s because it’s all bundled up. Unfurl the Rolly and you’ll get a “full-size” keyboard that automatically switches on and connects to your nearest (LG?) tablet. There’s a stand built into the top of the device, which will hold tablets up to ten inches big. The keys are made of solid plastic (not the flat, squishy kind), which LG hopes will offer a typing experience close to what you’re used to on your PC. The keyboard is just the start: the company says it plans to offer even more “input devices” in the next few months. The Rolly will launch this September in the US first, rolling out to the rest of the world soon after. (You’re welcome.)

Colorful 3D cancer models show how tumors grow

3D models of cancer tumors

Cancer is a terrible thing, but a beautiful representation of it might just help health care experts treat the disease more effectively. An international team of researchers has developed a 3D tumor simulation that shows how cancerous cells grow and mutate unevenly over time. Each color you see in a given model represents a different mutation — the more successful one of these aberrations is at migrating and reproducing, the more its color dominates the tumor. The simulation is also much better than previous models at representing the overall shapes of tumors, illustrating the bulges that come as the cancer rapidly outgrows any nearby healthy cells.

This isn’t a perfect replication of a tumor. It tends to omit or simplify a few factors, so you couldn’t use the code to predict how illnesses develop in a real body. However, the jump in accuracy may still be extremely helpful. Scientists could gauge the effectiveness of treatments before going ahead with clinical trials, or study the resistances that lead to a tumor bouncing back following a remission. In essence, the medical world should spend more time refining its cancer-fighting techniques and less time double-checking that these techniques work.

Coin version 2.0 brings NFC to your credit cards

coin nfc credit cardCoin version 2.0 brings NFC to your credit cards. The way Coin works is by storing all your credit cards on your phone and syncing them to the Coin card. The new 2.0 version adds NFC in “Early Access Mode”, allowing tap-to-pay at most, but not all retailers.

The Coin card can be bought today, but Coin says they are working on “additional partnerships” with banks and finical institutions. Meaning, right now cards that can be added are limited, but eventually more cards will be added for tap-and-go payments.

The new version also becomes thinner than before, allows you to assign a four-character name to cards, and accepts over-the-air updates. Not to mention, being twice as fast compared to version 1.0.

If you already have the first generation card, you will be happy to know, Coin is allowing free upgrades to 2.0 using the Android or iOS app. There is no extra charge, and you can check the shipping date through the app or Coin’s website. Those of you who would like to purchase a Coin card can pre-order one for $117.50.

TYLT FLYP-DUO a reversible USB cable for your Android or iOS device

I’ve had the opportunity to review TYLT products before and one thing I can say is that they make high-quality products. The FLYP-DUO is no exception.

FLYP-DUO overview

The FLYP-DUO features a flat cable that makes it nearly impossible to get tangled up in your bag or pocket. The cable itself is made from a soft touch rubber that feels great in your hand.

The cable also comes with a lightning adapter that will allow you to use it with any device that has either a micro-USB port or lightning port. This is a great feature for those who use both iOS and Android devices.

One of the best features is that the PC end of the USB cable is reversible. This allows you to plug the cable into a USB port without having to pay attention to what direction you plug it in. Unfortunately, the micro USB side is not reversible. Making the micro USB end reversible would be the only way to improve the FLYP-DUO.

Speaking of the micro USB connector, I really loved the how it fit into the female micro USB port. It fit snuggly, but not too snuggly.

FLYP-DUO setup

There’s really nothing to set up. Take it out of the box and plug it in.

FLYP-DUO usage

This is by far my favorite USB cable. I unplug the USB cable and take it with me in my backpack when I commute from home to work. The quality is A+.

One of the things that I like about the cable is that because of it’s flat design and high-quality rubber, you don’t have to worry too much about rolling over it with your chair. Which does happen quite frequently while I’m at work. This only occurs when I unplug a device and forget to move the cable.

What we liked:

  • Reversible USB connector
  • Soft touch rubber
  • Flat cable design
  • Lightning adapter

What could be better:

  • Cheaper price
  • Reversible micro-USB connector

FLYP-DUO summary

Overall this is a great cable. It’s a tad bit expensive for my taste, but it’s worth every penny when you take into account the quality that you are getting.

You can purchase the cable on TYLT’s website starting at $24.95.

Facebook is working on a Messenger-based personal assistant called ‘Facebook M’

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

With Google Now, Siri and Cortana leading the way for virtual personal assistants, it looks like Facebook wants to join in on the fun as well. Announced earlier today, Facebook M is a “personal digital assistant” which is wholly contained within the Facebook Messenger app. From the looks of it, you talk to M like you would a normal person in Messenger and it responds depending on what your request is. The neat feature in Facebook M is that it not only answers questions, but completes tasks on your behalf as well. In the words of Facebook VP of messaging products, David Marcus:

“Unlike other AI-based services in the market, M can actually complete tasks on your behalf. It can purchase items, get gifts delivered to your loved ones, book restaurants, travel arrangements, appointments and way more.”

facebook mFacebook M is apparently being tested by a handful of people in San Francisco at the moment, though the intention is for it to be rolled out to everyone – whether everyone is just the US or globally remains to be seen. Facebook M is definitely an interesting concept, and we hope we get to see more of it over the next few months.

YouTube Gaming is now available, hopes to deal Twitch a significant blow

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

When it comes to games live streaming, Twitch is pretty much the only name that comes to mind. YouTube intends to change that thinking with a live streaming service of its own: YouTube Gaming. This definitely isn’t the first time that we’ve heard of YouTube Gaming, but it will be the first time that the web interface is available for all to use. On top of that, the Android app is now available to US and UK Android users – though you can just circumvent that if someone were to provide you an APK to sideload on your device.

If that’s not your style, you can just check out the (English only) web interface at gaming.youtube.com which serves as a hub for you to access all the games and feeds that you want to watch. Who knew a whole new way to watch Minecraft videos would be so exciting?

Amazon discounts the Fire Phone (32GB) to $130, 1 year of Prime still included

Amazon Fire Phone $130

When Amazon announced its Fire Phone a little over a year ago, it garnered a great deal of attention, for any number of reasons: It confirmed rumors that had been circulating since 2010, it had a unique “3D” type viewing experience, it allowed users to take a picture of any product and immediately find it at Amazon, it was exclusive to AT&T, and it was expensive. Very expensive. So expensive was it that many predicted it would flop upon release. And it did.

Amazon has now lowered the price of the 32GB Fire Phone even further, to a very impressive $130, unlocked. Not only does this make it cheaper than alternatives such as the Moto G, but it also comes with a free year of Amazon Prime. This in-and-of-itself is practically a steal, as Prime costs $99. In a sense, the proposition here is getting a phone for $31 depending how you look at things.

For those in need of a refresher, Amazon details the following specs for the device:

  • 2.2GHz quad-core processor and 2GB RAM for ultra-fast app launch times and smooth multi-tasking
  • Bright 4.7″ HD display
  • 13 MP camera with optical image stabilization, HDR, and LED flash with unlimited free cloud storage for photos
  • Amazon-exclusive features: Firefly, Mayday, Dynamic Perspective
  • Over 33 million movies, TV shows, songs, books, apps, and more
  • Mayday – free, live on-device video support, 24×7, 365 days a year
  • Limited-time offer: includes a full year of Amazon Prime
  • U.S. compatibility: All GSM networks including AT&T, T-Mobile, and more. Not compatible with CDMA networks such as Verizon and Sprint

Note that the 64GB variant is no longer listed as in-stock and thus only the 32GB option can be purchased.

amazon fire phone press (1)

Despite the fact that the tech press has panned the device almost universally, Customer Review scores on Amazon, of which there are almost 10,000, are mostly quite positive. In fact, 50% have given the device 5 out of 5 stars. While clearly not for everyone, there is no denying that those who did purchase the Fire Phone and reviewed it are basically quite happy.

While it remains to be seen if Amazon will ever release a follow-up – Jeff Bezos himself had suggested it at one point- now is as good a time as any to purchase the device given the price tag. Potentially it could make for a good back-up phone, or as a main unit for a younger member of the family, or older.

Does this new price point make the Fire Phone more enticing to any of you out there? If you would buy it, for whom would you give it to? Does Amazon need to cut the price to $99? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!

Swype update adds emoji keyboard, number prediction, and Star Trek themes

Swype Keyboard
It’s been a while since Swype was a household name but it remains one of the more stable and popular gesture-typing keyboards available today. Nuance Communications, developers of Swype, have released a fairly substantial update to Swype that begins rolling out today. Included will be themes, a new emoji keyboard, and some new features.

Here is a full list of the major changes with the new update:

  • Swype has been working on their prediction technology and that shines through a bit in this update. The keyboard now has enhanced phrase prediction and will offer up multiple words at once to try to help you complete sentences.
  • Swype makes up for the lack of a number row by predicting numbers as you type. For instance, if you type out a number in letters, the keyboard will let you convert them to numbers very quickly using the prediction bar. This also works with symbols so typing “ejqp” will bring up a suggestion for 3:10 while “swpp” will just suggest $200.
  • Chinese language support is getting a boost. Nuance has announced that the Chinese language will use cloud-based predictions to offer up more “sophisticated and robust” language models. If you use this in Chinese, that means your predictions will get much better.
  • They have also included 19 Star Trek themes for more personalization and customization. The themes range from $0.99 to $1.99 as in-app purchases and there theme bundles that will go for $2.99.

swype keyboard
It may appear as though Swype is playing catch-up in a lot of instances, a few of these features are rather interesting. The ability to mitigate the lack of a number row by moving the functionality to the prediction bar is something we don’t see all that often and makes it much easier to type numbers without switching from letter to number input or waiting to hold each tap. The new capability to predict phrases is also somewhat unusual and if it works correctly, it should help boost typing speeds by a bit.

The Star Wars themes appear to be tastefully done in most cases and fans of the series should get a kick out of the available themes. It’s a good update and one that gives the aging keyboard a bit more flair.

Swype is currently going for $0.99 in the Google Play Store. If you want to try it out with the new update and themes, click the button below to get started!
