Samsung teases Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, and what could be an Edge tablet

samsung note 5 s6 edge Plus teaser

Every Samsung Unpacked event is preceded by a litany of teasers, and the one scheduled for next week in New York is no exception.

Samsung has already kicked off the teaser campaign for the Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, but a countdown page that the company put up on its Philippines site reveals there may be a third device coming on August 13.

From top to bottom, the silhouettes in the teaser appear to be belonging to the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, the Galaxy Note 5, and a mystery device that looks like an 8-inch tablet.

Samsung just launched the new Galaxy Tab S2 series, and while Samsung may feel the need to show off the new tablets at next week’s event, the device in the teaser is different. It features a metallic frame similar to the Galaxy S6, as opposed to the painted frame of the Tab S2 8.0.

More than that, tweaking the brightness of the image reveals what appears to be a slight curvature on the left side of the tablet. Is Samsung preparing an Edge tablet? We can only speculate for now, but that would make a lot of sense.

The Galaxy S6 Edge has been very successful, and that reportedly caused an initial shortage, as Samsung hadn’t expected the device to sell that well. But Samsung recently said that it solved the production issues holding back S6 Edge production, and the release of a larger variant featuring the same dual-curve design is proof that Samsung is confident both in the Edge concept and in its ability to keep up with demand. The next logical step is to expand the idea to tablets (and potentially other devices) – indeed, Samsung is known for transferring design elements from its flagship phones to its tablets and even laptops, like it did with the textured backs of the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5.

An Edge tablet would stick out from the glut of more or less interchangeable Android tablets, giving Samsung some much-needed differentiation in the competition with Apple and rapacious Chinese upstarts like Xiaomi.

We also have to note that Samsung is again keen to remind us that it created the large phone category, just like it did last year when Apple finally caved to market demand for a large iPhone.

Finally, the teaser lacks something as well: there’s no hint at the Gear A smartwatch that has been rumored to arrive this fall. Is Samsung saving the Gear A for later or is it simply a case of reading too much into a teaser image? We’ll find out in seven days.

What do you think? Is an Edge tablet coming? Would you be interested in such a device?

Huawei Nexus allegedly stars in a ten second video

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

All the Nexus news is flowing now – after getting an idea of what the LG Nexus is going to look like, we’re treated to what is apparently the Huawei Nexus in a brief, ten second video. While it’s only fleeting, the presence of a fingerprint scanner below the camera on the device is an unmistakable hallmark of a Huawei flagship device. While the device could easily be the Huawei Ascend Mate 8 that the Huawei Nexus is allegedly based off, we’re happy to give the video the benefit of the doubt – for now. Check out the video for yourself down below:

The Huawei Nexus is suspected to be a 5.7-inch device that will take the spot of the Nexus 6 in Google‘s line-up of Nexus devices. While there’s plenty of unconfirmed rumours flying around, the most credible rumour from leaker @evleaks suggests the device will have the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, a Quad HD display, and a metal body, something that isn’t quite clear from the video. Then again, the device in the video is likely only to be a prototype, so even if it was the actual Huawei Nexus smartphone, chances are it would look quite different when it is eventually released.

Google announces new Nexus update policy, devices to see monthly security updates

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will at least have heard something about the security scare that was Stagefright. Fortunately Google has already come up with a solution to the problem and has started to roll out updates to its Nexus devices – everybody else, you’re at the mercy of your manufacturers and carriers. However, in announcing its fix for Stagefright, Google also formally announced what its Nexus update policy is going to be moving forward. Rather ambitiously, it’s going to be releasing security updates monthly for Nexus devices, starting this week with the Stagefright patch.

Also notable is that Google said it would only be supporting devices for 3 years from its initial availability or 18 months from when it stops being sold on the Google Store, whichever ends up being longer. While that’s good news for recent Nexus devices, the Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 look like they won’t be getting updates for much longer – not that the development community won’t keep these devices alive, however. While it’s a bit sad knowing exactly how much longer the Nexus devices are going to be supported, it’s still better than being left in the dark.

Deutsche Telekom disables MMS auto-retrieval until the StageFright exploit is patched

StageFright

You’ve probably heard about the latest Android vulnerability that apparently affects over 900 million Android devices. It’s called StageFright, and the worry is that malware can be embedded in a video that could then run roughshod in your device without you initiating any action whatsoever. The malware ridden video would be sent by MMS and your device would download it automatically, thanks to the auto retrieve setting being ticked in settings of the messaging app. While most carriers are waiting for phone manufacturers to issue software patches to block the exploit, Germany’s Deutsche Telekom is taking a more pro-active approach by disabling the MMS auto-retrieve function itself.

This means that when Deutsche Telekom customers are sent a new MMS, instead of it being downloaded automatically, a SMS notification will be received saying:

“You have a new MMS. You can follow this link to download within 3 days (with credentials like number and passcode)”

Once you click the URL within the SMS, you will be asked to type in your credentials and passcode. While it isn’t a surefire way to avoid being a victim of the StageFright exploit because the manually downloaded video could still contain malware, it is another barrier. Deutsche Telekom says that once the exploit has been patched, they will re-enable the MMS auto-retrieve function.

Apple Music recruits 11 million trial users in six weeks

SWEDEN-MUSIC-COMPANY-SPOTIFY

Over 11 million people are now using Apple Music following the June 30th launch. “We’re thrilled with the numbers so far,” Apple senior VP Eddy Cue told USA Today. The service is in a free trial phase until September, so nobody has paid for it yet. The number of users is actually higher, though, as Apple said that 2 million of those folks are on the family plan, which allows six people to use it at once. Still, is 11 million free subscribers a lot? Everyone who updated an iPhone or iPad to iOS 8.4 was nagged to sign up, and it remains to be seen how many will opt out once they have to pay.

The brief time period makes the feat pretty impressive, though. It took Spotify around six and a half years to get to 20 million paid subscribers (as of June), with 75 million active users total — though it picked up half of those users in just the last year. Meanwhile, Apple is rumored to be seeking 100 million subscribers, which would be over twice the number of users that have paid subscriptions with all the other streaming services put together.

Cue acknowledges teething problems with Apple Music, especially for folks migrating their music collection. “We’re aware that some users have experienced some issues, and we hate letting them down, but we’re releasing updates as fast as we can to address those issues,” he said. Once the trial period nears an end, Apple will roll out a huge Music marketing campaign. Beats Music’s Jimmy Iovine said “for many people outside of the US, you still have to explain what it is and how it works,” adding “there’s still the issue of winning over millennials, who never pay for music.”

On another note, Cue said July was a record month for the App Store, with $1.7 billion in transactions. He chalked up the feat to “particular momentum” for Apple in China.

ASUS’ photo-centric ZenFones head to India first

Back at Computex in June, we got a first glimpse of ASUS’ upcoming ZenFone Selfie and the then-unnamed ZenFone 2 Laser, both being the first phones to switch back to Qualcomm’s chipset after ASUS’ streak of Intel-powered mobile devices. Today, the company has finally chosen India as the first country to get the Selfie and the Laser, as well as a few surprise devices. Let’s talk about the Laser first: It’s obviously all about the speedy laser auto-focus on the 13-megapixel, f/2.0 main camera with dual-tone flash. Its also comes in three sizes: 5 inches (not launching in India just yet), 5.5 inches (from 9,999 Rupees or about $160) and 6 inches (from 17,999 Rupees or about $280); all with Gorilla Glass 4 and resolution of up to 1080p. Chipset-wise, these models range from the low-end quad-core Snapdragon 410 with 2GB RAM up to the octa-core Snapdragon 615 with 3GB RAM.

As for the Selfie, it’s essentially the 5.5-inch version of the Laser slapped with a more powerful front-facing wide-angle camera: 13-megapixel resolution and f/2.2 aperture, but no laser on this side. It’s powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 615 chipset and retails for 15,999 Rupees or about $250.

Launching alongside the Selfie and the Laser is the ZenFone 2 Deluxe, which is quite the looker thanks to its cool multifaceted polygonal back covers (hopefully ASUS will sell these separately for existing ZenFone 2 users). Underneath that, it’s just the top spec ZenFone 2 with 128GB of internal storage, 4GB RAM, a 2.3GHz 64-bit Intel Atom chip and the same-old fast charge technology — from zero to 60 percent in just 39 minutes. This one goes for 22,999 Rupees or about $360 which is pretty aggressive, especially given that the OnePlus 2 comes with just 3GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage for the same price in India.

For those who are looking for a new Android tablet, ASUS is also bringing the affordable Intel-powered ZenPads to India, with the 7-inch model going for 11,999 Rupees or about $190, and the 8-inch version for 14,999 Rupees or about $240. Better yet, for an extra 3,000 Rupees (about $50), you can get the quirky Audio Cover for some surround sound action on these slates.
