Verizon starts rolling out Android 5.1.1 update with Stagefright fix for the Nexus 7
Verizon has finally started rolling out the long-awaited Android 5.1.1 update to its carrier-branded variant of the second-generation Nexus 7. In addition to the latest consumer build of the open-source operating system, this upgrade also transports a much-needed patch for the device’s ever-so-scary Stagefright vulnerability.
All the changes you’d expect to find in the Lollipop software are bundled into this upgrade alongside Verizon’s XLTE service, such as support for multiple accounts, improved notifications, stronger 256-bit encryption, a smoother multitasking experience, a new recent screen, personal unlocking and Material Design.
As is the norm, the update is being rolled out in stages, but if you don’t feel like waiting for a notification confirming that it’s ready for your device to hit your unit, you could always search for the upgrade manually.
To do so simply open the Settings app, scroll to the bottom and tap on “About Device”, hit “System Updates”, then select “Check for updates”. Once done, the upgrade will start downloading from Samsung’s servers.

SLICK: “the world’s best GoPro stabilizer”

Talk about a successful funding campaign! The Slick stabilizer project has only been on Indiegogo for under 12 hours and it already blasted through its $50,000 goal. They have managed to get over $63,000 in funds… and have 45 days to go! What is this SLICK thing all about, and why is everyone rushing to sign up for it?
The title says it all. Or at least it’s what the company states about the product, and we have to say they are not too far from the truth. This is a GoPro stabilizer that will make your action videos smoother than ever. This is not your average stabilizer – the SLICK is a motorized gadget that can measure pitch, roll and yaw. It offers a complete stabilizing mechanism that is sure to offer the best results. In addition, the SLICK is waterproof, compact and features a removable battery that can last up to 2 hours in use.

To make matters even better, the SLICK doesn’t need much of an operational manual. One simply attaches the GoPro camera to the SLICK, and then places the stabilizer in any GoPro mount (all are compatible… even with drones). After this, switch the device on and you are set. Just let SLICK work its magic!
This handy accessory is compatible with all modern GoPro cameras, including the 3, 3+, 4 and 4 Session. Want to see it in action? The team has put together some videos showing the results, compared to a GoPro without the stabilizer. The difference is astounding!
Want in on the action? All early bird specials are now gone, but you can still get a good discount if you back the Indiegogo campaign. Customers can get a SLICK stabilizer for as low as $229, as opposed to the $279 planned retail price. It’s also possible for backers to obtain a couple SLICK devices by pledging $429. And if you really want to go all out, $1049 will grant you 5 SLICK stabilizers.
It’s not exactly a cheap gadget, but you can be sure it will improve the quality of your action videos. No one likes those shaky clips! Are any of you signing up for one of these? I am not a huge GoPro user, but if you are, this thing is totally worth the cash!

VAIO returns: coming to a Microsoft Store near you this October
When Sony announced that it was spinning off its PC business, many mourned the passing of the premium — but not quite best-selling — VAIO series. The company was reborn in Japan, focusing on far less PC models (only two at the start), and a Made In Japan ethic that stretched from design to manufacturing. Now the company says it plans to start selling its newest machines outside of its homeland. VAIO’s Z Canvas PC will be available both online and some Microsoft stores across the US starting this October. Prices will start at $2,200, depending on specification options. In an interview with the WSJ, the new CEO Yoshimi Ota added that the company plans to sell a slimmer laptop with cellular capability– a feature that occasionally appears in niche laptop models. Slideshow-313637
Ota added that VAIO, as a company, will also branch out into more communication devices, wearable gadgets and, perhaps oddly, factory-automation machines with artificial intelligence. The company will also start to create its own line of robots. VAIO’s factories are already building bipedal robots for a separate company using spare capacity from Sony’s biggest foray into bots: Aibo.

Intel works with Google to develop Project Tango developer kit for RealSense devices

Google is not the only company working on environment-aware devices. Though Project Tango is outstanding, Intel’s RealSense technology happens to be very similar, and it has already reached the consumer market via the Dell Venue 8 7000 tablet. The kicker here is that these companies are not really competing in these new ventures, though. In fact, they are partnering up!
Intel’s yearly Developer Forum (IDF) has taken off and the chip manufacturer took the stage to tell us about their recent work with the Search Giant. Intel is releasing a Project Tango developer kit that uses RealSense technology. This includes a 6-inch handset that sports multiple cameras, which will help determine distances and environment data. Engadget managed to get a good look at, you will find some of their images below.

This set of tools goes by the name of ‘Intel RealSense Smartphone developer kit’, and it is looking to be quite an upgrade over what we have seen coming from Intel in the past. Google’s technology will allow RealSense devices to gain more capabilities, such as 3D scanning, virtual reality, area learning and indoor navigation.
Intel continues to keep most details on the quiet side, but we should learn more as the developer kit approaches its release date. Do we have any developers interested? If so, you will be able to get your own Intel RealSense Smartphone developer kit by the end of the year. Price is also unknown, but dev kits are never exactly cheap.

After these bundles reach developers and manufacturers, it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing more RealSense/Project Tango devices hit the market. I can’t wait for this technology to evolve. After having tested the Dell Venue 8 7000, I can honestly say the system needs to take more advantage of all those cameras. Measuring distances and blurring out backgrounds just isn’t worth the investment to me.

Humble PC & Android Bundle 13 offers the regular assortment of great games on the cheap
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Humble Bundles are always a great source of great games and the charity aspect of it is a nice bonus. Humble Bundle has just launched the Humble PC & Android Bundle 13 (we’re really up to 13?) which features a roster of great games, a few of which are debuting on Android for the first time.
The list of games includes Crimsonland, Neverending Nightmares, Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians, FOTONICA, TinyKeep, Monster Loves You!, and Crowntakers – the first four games you can get for any old donation, but for the other three, you’ll need to donate more than the average price, which is currently sitting around $2.83USD at the time of writing. That actually seems like an abnormally low price for such a great group of games – the combined value is around $100 – but hey, nobody’s complaining about great cheap games that also contributes to charity.
If you want to take advantage of the Humble PC & Android Bundle 13, and I have a feeling that you do, you can visit the Humble Bundle website here to make your donation.

‘Rainbow Six: Siege’ won’t breach and clear until December
It seems like that original October 13th release date proved a bit too unlucky for Ubisoft and Rainbow Six: Siege. A post on the gaming juggernaut’s blog says that the game has a lot of room to improve and an extra month or so will help the developers do just that. Namely, balancing weapons and equipment, tweaking co-op “across all game modes” and some other housekeeping bits. Don’t worry though because the closed beta is still on for September 24th while the full game launches across all platforms on December 1st. It’s starting to look like a trend for the company, and is almost assuredly helped in part by the absolutely atrocious launch of last fall’s Assassin’s Creed: Unity.

Apple to Demote iPod Stock to Accessory Shelves In Retail Stores
Apple will relocate iPod stock from the sales floor and back storage area to the accessory shelves and remove the iPad-based Smart Signs that sit next to many display devices starting on Wednesday, according to a new report from 9to5Mac. The changes are an effort by Apple to simplify the shopping experience in its retail stores.
Apple is preparing to make significant changes to its stores to simplify the experience by relocating iPod stock to accessory shelves and removing iPad-based Smart Signs, according to several Apple Retail managers briefed today on the plans. Apple will begin rolling out these notable changes overnight on Tuesday to stores in the United States so that customers who begin coming in on Wednesday see the refreshed look.
Apple’s signature products, the iPad, Mac, iPhone, iPod and Apple Watch, have typically been stored in the back storage area of an Apple Store. A customer would have to talk to an Apple Store employee and tell them which model they would like to purchase and wait as their product was retrieved from the back. Apple’s non-signature products, like Apple TV and Time Capsule, are available on the accessory shelves and are easily accessible by customers without having to consult with a retail employee.
Now, customers will be able to simply walk up and pull their iPod of choice off of the store shelves. The demotion of the iPod from the main floor to the shelves is likely reflective of the iPod’s decreased sales, as the device has become an increasingly minor business for Apple. The Cupertino company has also decreased the iPod’s presence on its website, removing the iPod section from the website’s top banner.
Additionally, Apple is removing the iPad 2-based Smart Signs intended to educate customers about Apple products. Sources tell 9to5Mac that some customers would get confused using the Smart Signs, expecting them to be fully usable iPad demo units rather than simple ways to learn about a product. Instead, Apple will begin loading product information directly on the iPads, iPhones and Macs starting next week. With less clutter on the product tables, Apple plans to install more devices for customers to test on the sales floor.
The changes to the retail stores follow Apple’s move to merge its website and online store, also creating a more simplified shopping experience for customers.
XYZ CEO says he won’t be selling the company to Google or any other company
After Google’s massive Alphabet restructuring, the company registered the domain abc.xyz instead of using a traditional .com domain. As you’d expect, this drove a ton of extra traffic for XYZ as a company, and they saw a large increase in domain registration the week following the news.
Not only have registrations spiked, but according to CEO Daniel Negari, XYZ has also received tons of offers for strategic investments and even buyouts from bigger tech companies. It makes sense; most start-ups seem like they exist solely to find funding from a bigger backer or to be bought up and merged into an existing company, which usually happens to be Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc.
Despite all of these offers, Negari has clarified that he’s not interested in selling the company. He says there’s still a lot of work to be done with XYZ to get it to where he wants to be, and he won’t be selling until he’s done.
An IPO may be in XYZ’s future, although there aren’t any plans for that to happen just yet.
Moral of the story? The best way to get your start-up on the front page of tech news sites is to get Google to use your product. Simple, right?

Skype updated to 5.10, brings custom ringtones and photo sharing
Skype has been updated to 5.10 and brings with it new custom ringtones and the ability to forward photos from your chats.
With the new update you can now customize the ringtone for incoming calls. The best part is you can do this per friend and give each one their own custom ringtone. To do this you have to be in a conversation with the person you want to change the ringtone of. Just tap the lower right and select “Ringtone options” then “Set custom ringtone”. Skype will automatically detect all the ringtones on your device.
Another newly added feature is being able to forward photos from your chats. You can now share photos from one conversation with other Skype friends who are not in that chat.
Finally, the last change is giving the option to change group chat colors. This makes it a lot easier to tell them all apart.
