Amazon’s Echo speaker plays music from multiple accounts

Amazon Echo speaker in all its monolithic glory

Amazon’s Echo speaker has been fine for playing music and audiobooks so far… unless you live in a household with more than one Amazon user, at which point it just gets messy. That won’t be a problem any longer, though: Amazon has added support for multiple accounts, making it easy to play solely from your own collection. You only have to tell it to switch profiles to get your tunes. Simply put, this could be a lifesaver if you’re going to share an Echo with roommates or a significant other — you don’t have to create a shared account or risk having someone else pollute your song recommendations.

Phone data can predict infectious disease outbreaks

KENYA-TELECOM-MOBILE

A team of Princeton and Harvard researchers analyzed the phone call records of 15 million users in Kenya — not to spy on people, but to study the spread of seasonal disease. The team wanted to see if the movement of phone users can predict outbreaks of seasonal diseases like rubella or German measles. So, they used anonymous records from between June 2008 and June 2009, including locations where people made phone calls. They then compared the data to the areas where cases of rubella were reported in the country. The result? Well, it turns out the subjects’ movement patterns matched the locations with the highest risk of rubella within that year-long period.

Princeton assistant professor and lead author C. Jessica Metcalf said:

Our analysis shows that mobile phone data may be used to capture seasonal human movement patterns that are relevant for understanding childhood infectious diseases. In particular, phone data can describe within-country movement patterns on a large scale, which could be especially helpful for localized treatment.

In the future, the researchers plan to test if the same method is as effective in forecasting malaria and cholera outbreaks and eventually be used by doctors and other medical professionals.

Photos of a suspected Nexus 8 surface featuring all-metal build

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

There have been many rumours surrounding the release of two new Nexus smartphones from Google this year – the LG Nexus 5 and Huawei Nexus 6 – but some new leaked photos of a tablet device suggests that there could also be a Nexus 8 tablet sitting somewhere in the wings. This is probably one of the first times that we’ve heard this year that a Nexus 8 is being prepared, so we should definitely take this news with a grain of salt – having said that, if it is a low cost device, it would make a lot of sense considering that the Nexus 9 significantly upped its pricing compared to the older Nexus 7 and it could be pitched as the new Nexus 7. Check out the two leaked images below:

One thing to note about the device in the photos is that the tablet features an all-metal body and it doesn’t show any noteworthy features that can be attributed to any one manufacturer. While the device in the photos is only a dummy, the design appears to be in an advanced state, though if it were an actual Nexus 8, we’d be interested to know if it would be announced alongside the new Nexus smartphones, or on its own later in the year.

‘Mortal Kombat X’ won’t be coming to last-gen consoles after all

'Mortal Kombat X'

I hope you weren’t counting on playing Mortal Kombat X on your trusty previous-generation console — you’re about to be disappointed. Warner Bros. has cancelled both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the bloody brawler, claiming that neither version would meet the quality “expected of a Mortal Kombat game.” It’s not certain exactly what went wrong. However, it’s clearer than ever that the transition to newer platforms is taking its toll on developers. Getting a game to run on more than two or three platforms isn’t easy or cheap, and there isn’t much incentive for studios to keep working on legacy support when you’re increasingly likely to have a current system in your home.

Photos of an actual physical BlackBerry Venice surface, give us thorough tour of the exterior

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

While we’ve heard plenty of rumours about an Android-powered BlackBerry smartphone called the Venice over the last few weeks, but we’ve yet to see an actual physical BlackBerry Venice – until today. Thanks to an extensive leak out of Vietnam, the BlackBerry Venice has had a series of photos taken from all angles of a device, even showing off the clearly Android operating system that’s running on the device. Check out the photos below:

This is our first real opportunity to see how the slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard fits in with the rumoured 5.4-inch touchscreen display, and for the most part, it looks pretty good. What’s interesting about the software running on the device is that it looks remarkably clean looking – while it’s likely too early to say much, but the BlackBerry Venice looks to be running something quite close to stock Android, though they have made some changes to the multitasking window, for better or worse. We’ve still no word on when we can expect this device to be revealed, but now that we’ve seen one in the flesh, I think we can agree that the BlackBerry Venice is actually looking quite intriguing.

Dendroid malware developer pleads guilty in court

android-malware

It has been over a month since purported Dendroid malware developer Morgan Culbertson was arrested in a world-wide operation that put 70 involved members under searches and arrests. Fast-forward to today and we are learning Culbertson has pleaded guilty in court last Tuesday, making him responsible for the federal charges involving the creation of the before-mentioned malicious software.

For those who may not have kept up with these events, Dendroid is a malicious piece of software with the purpose of stealing information from infected users. After having successfully attacked a device, the hacker would gain the ability to take pictures using the phone’s camera, track both ambient audio and video, download photos and even record calls.

dendroid-malware

We know at least one infected app made it to the Google Play Store, and the malicious code was also widely distributed via other methods, making this one of the most dangerous malware implementations the Android ecosystem has seen. So… who was responsible for this whole mess?!

morgan-culbertsonMorgan C. Culbertson is 20 years old (wow!) and was a student a Carnegie Mellon University. He also spent some months as a FireEye intern, where he “improved Android malware detection by discovering new malicious malware families and using a multitude of different tools.”

Culbertson was selling his malware via Darkode (the forum that was targeted by the authorities) for $300. He also had his source code up for sale, which would allow buyers to create their own version of Darkode. The only catch was that entire software and its code would go for a much higher price.

What’s next? It definitely won’t be fun for Morgan, who faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines. The sentencing is scheduled for December 2nd, so we wil learn more details when that day comes around. I just wonder if he made that much money selling his software!

New photos of BlackBerry’s upcoming Venice slider phone leak

blackberry android sliderMore photos of BlackBerry’s upcoming Venice phone with a slide out keyboard have leaked, giving a pretty detailed look at the phone’s design and keyboard. Aside from being a slider, the phone looks like any typical smartphone with a large touch screen, although it’s a little thicker than most phones on the market thanks to a keyboard housing.

Rumors peg the device sporting a 5.4-inch display with a quad-HD resolution, a Snapdragon 808 CPU paired with 3 GB of RAM, and an 18 megapixel rear facing camera. As far as software goes, it doesn’t look like BlackBerry will be modifying Android much at all, so we can expect a pretty standard version of Android Lollipop.

Still no official word from BlackBerry about this device, so take any info with a grain of salt. But with how many rumors and photos we’ve seen of the device, it’s hard to believe that it doesn’t become official relatively soon.

Verizon will not be cutting off two-year contracts for existing customers

Verizon-Wireless-logo-7893When Verizon introduced their newer wireless plans, there was some confusion on the state of the carrier’s two-year contracts. Now that the plans have been available for a few weeks, the carrier has posted some new info clarifying the specifics of the plan, including that existing customers can still get two-year contracts and contract pricing, just like they’ve always done.

The biggest takeaway here is that Verizon won’t be forcing any existing customers onto the new plan, and existing customers are more than welcome to keep renewing their contracts to buy new devices. It doesn’t appear that Verizon will be getting rid of these contracts anytime soon, so if you’re just not a fan of financing devices, you won’t need to change. You obviously won’t get any of the line discounts that are on Verizon’s newer plans, but depending on the device, that might end up being a little cheaper.

Really, all of this info just looks like Verizon is trying to keep their existing customers happy. If you don’t want to change anything, you don’t have to. New customers don’t get that leniency, but it’s nice to see Verizon not force old customers onto new plans, especially those unlimited data customers.

NASA simulates Mars mission by locking up people in a tiny dome

A group of six people bade the rest of the world farewell on Friday to begin their year-long stay in a cramped dome on Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano. The French astrobiologist, German physicist and American pilot, architect, doctor/journalist and soil scientist went on a voluntary isolation to simulate a manned mission to the red planet, which could last from one to three years. The team will have to endure living together in a 36-foot-wide, 20-foot-tall abode called HI-SEAS, short for Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation. They do have (tiny) rooms of their own with enough space for a sleeping cot and a desk, but they can only go outside if they’re wearing a spacesuit. All six also won’t have access to comfort food if they’re feeling stressed from their living situation: they have to make do with basic food items like canned tuna and powdered cheese.

While this is the longest pseudo-Mars expedition thus far, two previous teams already spent four and eight months in the dome in the past. The experiments are necessary in order for NASA to know what kind of conflicts can arise from having to live together with very little privacy in such a small space. After all, its astronauts typically spend only six months aboard the ISS per expedition.

The eight-month mission members went through some issues, for instance, though they thankfully solved them and made sure the project would go as planned. “I think one of the lessons is that you really can’t prevent interpersonal conflicts. It is going to happen over these long-duration missions, even with the very best people,” HI-SEAS chief investigator Kim Binsted told AFP. “But what you can do is help people be resilient so they respond well to the problems and can resolve them and continue to perform well as a team.”
