Sony Xperia Z5 press images leak out ahead of IFA announcement

Sony‘s never been particularly good at keeping secrets, and the latest leak consisting of Sony Xperia Z5 press images just reiterates that. While there’s very little to show in the images themselves, we can see from the content that Sony is trying to show off two key features – waterproofing, which the Xperia line has had as long as anyone cares to remember, and the new camera sensor that will give the Xperia Z5 hybrid autofocus. How well this autofocus actually works is another question entirely, but it’s clear that Sony wants to make it a selling point. Check out all the leaked images below:

In terms of design, we’re probably looking at a device that hasn’t deviated from that of the Xperia Z4 very much, if at all – that seems to be Sony’s style nowadays – so we’ll have to see if they have something up their sleeve that we haven’t heard about yet. We won’t have long to wait as Sony will be holding a press conference at IFA 2015 in Berlin and we’re 99% certain that the Xperia Z5 will be headlining the event.

What do you think about these Sony Xperia Z5 press images?

Discovery launches short-form VR videos, starting with sharks

Discovery hasn’t jumped the shark yet, but it’s definitely gotten really, really close to a few ferocious sea beasts. Discovery VR is the company’s new foray into virtual reality and 360-degree experiences, and it begins with a series of short-form, shark-infested videos from Mythbusters. It also launches with Gold Rush and Survivorman spin-offs, showcases of freeboarding and surfing, and tours through California’s Half Moon Bay and Muir Woods. We first heard about Discovery shooting Mythbusters and other shows in VR back in May. The Discovery VR videos can be viewed online, via mobile apps for iOS and Android, and in Google Cardboard or Samsung Gear VR. Oculus support is “coming soon,” though probably not before the Rift actually launches in Q1 2016.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, HitRECord and LG will work together on future projects

LG_Logo_02_TA_CES_2014Joseph Gordon-Levitt, HitRECord and LG have announced a collaboration to support the development of creative content. The partnership will build upon LG’s ambitions to celebrate and support creators across the world.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt said his production company, HitRECord, can be joined by anyone. As long as you have something to share, you can join. He also says LG understands the power of the internet, as it now enables anyone to create and share their own content, this makes them the perfect partner.

Press release:

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Aug. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A. (LG) announced that it is partnering with actor, writer and director, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his Emmy Award winning production company HitRECord to support the development of creative content. The innovative collaboration will build upon LG’s ambition to celebrate and support creators across the world, spanning a series of projects over the coming year, including some firsts for Gordon-Levitt and HitRECord.

HitRECord is an online collaborative production company, founded and directed by Gordon-Levitt. The company has created short films, published books, released records, and produced two seasons of Hit Record on TV with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, their unique take on the half-hour variety show format. Further details about the LG partnership have been released by Gordon-Levitt at: http://on.fb.me/1Jy8Yw7.

“HitRECord is a community that anyone can join. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you have something to share, all you need is to go out there and do it,” said Gordon-Levitt. “In the past, the movies and shows we’d watch could only be made by certain people, and the stories we’d hear would only come from a limited number of perspectives. Technology is changing all that, and giving more people the opportunity to share their own, unique stories. LG understands this and that’s why we’re embarking on this partnership. They’ll be supporting us, and our community, by collaborating on new projects, and providing the tools we need to make the best art possible.”

Beginning this week, HitRECord will be calling on its community of artists, including film makers, musicians and writers, to kick off the first project coming out of this partnership – a collaborative effort to create a short film focused on the “In-Between Moments.”

“The ‘In-Between Moments’ happen all throughout the day and can be beautiful, or spontaneous, or fleeting – but they give life its texture. This concept was originally contributed by an artist on our site named “sazzyyazzy.’ I love the idea, and can’t wait to explore this further with the support of LG,” said Gordon-Levitt.

Gordon-Levitt’s call to action to the HitRECord community is now available at: http://www.hitrecord.org/collaborations/10590. The project is open to anyone, whether they are a professional artist or just someone who has something to share – anyone can join the HitRECord community and contribute.

“We’re committed to helping everyone from professional artists to the everyday person – democratizing the ability for the world to make and share meaningful content. This is how Joseph and the HitRECord community work as well, so for us, it’s a natural partnership and we look forward to results of our collaboration,” said Chang Ma, senior vice president of LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., Inc. “Joseph is not a celebrity spokesperson – he is an established artist. Together, we are going to tap into HitRECord’s powerful community of creative individuals to deliver on our promise that through purposeful innovation, we can help tell better stories and bring those beautiful, “in-between moments” to life.”

In its constant pursuit to create the technology people truly want, LG recently launched LG G4 with one of the most sophisticated cameras available on any smartphone. Anyone, from professionals to amateur photographers can take amazing near-DSLR pictures.

GigSky shows off their new travel SIM card with the Obi Worldphone

GigSky logoGigSky, the first global mobile network designed for travelers, showed off it’s 90-country coverage using the GigSky SIM and app during last night’s launch of the Obi Worldphones.

Ravi Rishy-Maharaj, GigSky’s founder and chief executive officer said:

“We’re thrilled to bring GigSky to a generation that thrives on being connected everywhere they go. GigSky on an Obi Worldphone simplifies the connectivity process from one country to the next, so young travelers can stay in touch with their friends and continue to use their favorite apps, just like they would at home.”

Once a user places a GigSky SIM into a Obi Worldphone (or other phone), they can tap a button in the GigSky app to purchase short-term data plans. This will eliminate needing to pay high bills or the need to purchase local SIM cards in other countries.

To purchase a GigSky SIM, head to Amazon. You will also need to download the GigSky app.

Turing Robotics’ liquid metal phones to ship out in December

That rectangular, encrypted Turing Robotics phone that one of our editors called “charmingly quirky” is ready for release. In fact, it will start shipping out on December 18th — that’s also when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters, and yes, the company rep admits, it’s not a coincidence. The Turing phone has a 5.5-inch 1080p screen, features encrypted communication and is built from a metal alloy called liquidmorphium, which is apparently stronger than titanium. Turing Robotics already gave people the chance to reserve units sometime ago, but if you want the “Dark Wyvern” special edition, you can pre-order one on September 24th.

Dark Wyvern’s 128GB model will set you back $999, which costs quite a bit more than its ordinary counterpart ($870). The super-limited (only 3,000 units will be sold) special edition version called “Dark Wyvern Glaedr” is even more expensive, though, with its $1,299 price tag. We’ll find out what makes that one so costly on September 9th, the same day Apple’s slated to launch its new iPhones.

Sony isn’t intentionally keeping ‘Until Dawn’ off of Twitch

Until Dawn™_20150822015129
Right now, there’s a bit of an issue going on with Twitch and the PlayStation 4’s horror-movie-director simulator, Until Dawn. Yesterday the Twitch Support Twitter account posted that if you were using PS4’s built-in Twitch sharing functionality that Sony had disabled archiving. Based on the response we got from Sony, it doesn’t seem like it was for a nefarious reason or anything, mostly just forgetting to flip a switch.

We are currently working on a fix that will enable archiving of Until Dawn Twitch streams as this feature was unintentionally disabled. We are humbled by the community reception of the game and are excited to see fans sharing experiences on Twitch and YouTube. We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide an update as soon as the issue has been resolved.

So there you have it, folks: just be patient. In the meantime you could always watch our archived stream just below.

Phone It In the Right Way

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

There’s a right way and a wrong way to phone it in. With a simple Smartphone, you can phone it in and show your teams just how stellar phoning it in can be. There are apps galore that managers can use to bring everyone into the room and keep up with your teams and office even when you are separated by geographical distance. Even full scale meetings get easier with the right tools. Create and foster a culture that engages your people with creativity, collaboration, and communication.

Do Meetings Right

Everyone has had the meeting from hell. Interminable. Pointless. You might as well be on a merry go round. You play Candy Crush on your phone, daydream, and according to a Verizon white paper 39 percent of meeting attendees have actually taken a nap. If you look around the meeting and see blank stares, you are dealing with a bunch of people who have simply checked out. Their butts are in the seats, but they are gone baby gone. Even in a video conference, there’s going to be people who just clock out the second the lights go down.

This is because most meetings are run in a format that despite the PowerPoint slides is right out of the last century. Top down, mono directional, and not taking into account that the people with their butts in the seats can contribute, too. A culture of ineffectual meetings can even turn toxic and dysfunctional, kneecapping an organization that needs to adapt to the digital age. It’s 2015, not 1985, and everyone needs to evolve past the shoulder pads and big hair era of management. Make the technology work for you, with apps that work on any platform or device.

Get Your Droid On

Pew Internet’s recent survey of smartphone use notes that 64 percent of Americans in 2015 own a smartphone, and that is up from 58 percent just in 2014. Odds are that your team members own a smartphone, and use it daily. If you can incorporate that mobile phone into your communications policy, you will have a flexible platform for reaching out to your staff and giving them the face time they need with you and each other. Android video conferencing with Bluejeans is not limited to Android, this application can connect with so many other platforms, including room based systems from Cisco and Polycom, and other apps that will make collaboration easy and intuitive.

Getting On Board

Unlike room based systems, you will find that using a cloud sourced application is much simpler and much less expensive. Previously, the hardware and the software deployed in many video conferencing systems required its own staff to operate. While you may want to appoint a meeting moderator, the interface, whether it is on a smartphone, a tablet, or other device is simple to use. Collaborative tools include document and video sharing, meeting recording, text chatting, and even a command center that will help you by providing valuable information about how you are conducting your meetings. Participants can access their meetings directly from their browser, and anyone from anywhere can be invited to join in.

Give Good Meeting

It can take some effort to build a culture in which everyone participates, and one of the chief complaints about meetings is that they are dominated by individuals and seem to go exactly nowhere. By deploying Bluejeans, meetings are always fresh. Participants can refer back to the recordings, notes, documents and other media that were shared during the meeting and implement the decisions that were made immediately. A meeting is productive only when acted upon. Meetings that go nowhere, have no agenda, and serve little purpose should be decisively eliminated.

Many meetings can be eliminated by deciding how best fulfill communication needs. For instance, calling a meeting with nothing as simple as a status update is a waste of time, disruption, and can slow productivity if a meeting does need to be held considering a certain subject within the status update then those who are most affected can be summoned to a video-conference to discuss solutions. Another complaint about meetings is that people who have the most to offer, are not usually invited to participate, there can be many reasons for this, but those who speak the least should be offered some time in front of the camera. When you are creating the meeting agenda give everyone a set amount of time to offer their contributions and points of view.

Final Words

You cannot change a culture overnight. Re-engaging with employees who are detached and alienated will take time. When a 2015 Gallup poll showed in excess of 68 percent of workers uninvolved, and unenthusiastic about their work, it should alarm any manager or stands the impact of soft costs on the bottom line. Reengage them, give them something to be enthusiastic about, and allow them to develop creativity and passion that will benefit your organization.

Swype gets Star Trek themes and a new emoji keyboard

SwypeSwype, the keyboard that kicked off gesture-based typing on a touch keyboard, will be getting some new tricks to make typing on your smartphone a little more enjoyable.

The keyboard from Nuance is getting 19 Star Trek keyboard themes featuring many characters that will be available as in-app purchases. The themes span the original Star Trek series and The Next Generation, so there should be something for just about any fan.

Another notable addition to Swype is the emoji keyboard that’s baked into the latest update. Swype currently predicts emojis in its prediction bar, but the new keyboard gives you quick access to hundreds of emojis with tons of animations making it just a little easier to find that perfect emoji for your conversations.

If Star Trek and emojis aren’t your thing, Swype is also including some new prediction tools that will allow the keyboard to predict multiple words and phrases, as well as numbers, which should speed up your typing.

Arches announces the Diamond Tab with octa-core CPU and 2K screen

archos diamond tabArchos has announced a new high-end tablet set to be shown off at IFA this year, titled the Diamond Tab. The tablet boasts some relatively powerful specs and an aggressive price tag, so it might be something to keep on your radar if you’re in the market.

The Diamond Tab utilizes an octa-core MediaTek processor with 3 GB of RAM and has a 2K 7.9-inch screen. There’s 32 GB of internal storage, which should be plenty of space for most people, and and a 5 megapixel rear camera. Best of all, the price tag comes in at £179, or about $276. That’s not the cheapest tablet on the market, but it’s pretty decently priced considering the rest of the hardware.
