Sony’s SmartWatch 3 gets a dedicated watch faces app

sony_smartwatch_3_watch_faces_app_icon

Personalizing the SmartWatch 3 just became easier with a new app dedicated for watch faces. Sony has released an app that allows owners of its Android Wear device to change the background, hands, time markers, accent color, and display settings. So now is your chance if you’ve ever wanted to customize the SmartWatch 3 with unique watch faces.

The timing of this app’s release is interesting as new Android Wear devices are expected at IFA 2015. Despite its Play Store listing mentioning only the SmartWatch 3, Sony could easily extend support to another smartwatch with an update.

Etsy’s mobile apps now let you find local sellers and events

Etsy may be an online marketplace first and foremost, but the company has long had a “shop local” feature to let you find craftspeople and products made near you. Strangely, though, this feature only existed on the desktop — Etsy’s mobile app didn’t have its local feature, despite the fact that your smartphone pretty much always knows where you are. The situation has now been corrected: Etsy Local is now included in the company’s iOS and Android app. Users can now find items and sellers near them, whether they’re selling at a pop-up shop or through a local retailer, and Etsy sellers can add real-life locations to find their work.

The app will also automatically make recommendations for retailers and items near you worth checking out; it’s all based on your Etsy history, including what shops and specific you’ve favorited while using the site. And if you’d rather see local goods in areas that outside of your current city, you can just use the built-in map to explore any other location you choose. The company may still not want you selling spells, but you can find other local goods in person by updating to the new app — it’s available now in iTunes and Google Play.

‘Splatoon’ is getting a 61-tune soundtrack in Japan

'Splatoon'

If you’ve even had a small taste of Splatoon, you know that the inky shooter is defined as much by its upbeat, irreverent music as its bright, Nickelodeon-circa-1995 visuals. Nintendo clearly knows this, too — it’s planning to release Splatune, a whopping 61-song original soundtrack. Most of it (37 tracks) will be straight-up music, but there will also be 10 jingles and 14 pieces based on sound effects. That’s a lot, especially when you consider that many big-name movies don’t get such a lavish treatment. Be prepared to pay a pretty penny to an importer if you want a copy, though. Nintendo is releasing Splatune as a ¥3,200 ($27) two-disc album in Japan (where CDs are still huge) on October 21st, and there’s no word yet on a release elsewhere.

Deal: buy the ASUS ZenWatch for only $124

ASUS-Zenwatch-3

The ASUS ZenWatch 2 is on its way to store shelves, so it’s only natural that we are starting to see more deals on the previous iteration. The ASUS ZenWatch has already been available for $129.99 from Google, Amazon and Best Buy, in the recent past. The newest deal comes from Newegg, which is offering the Android Wear smart watch for only $124.

Is there a catch? Well… not quite. It’s not really a catch – it’s just that you do have to take multiple steps to get the price down to this level. For starters, you need to add your device to your cart and add the coupon code “VCO2015BTS”, after inputting your email. This will bring the price down to $139 (from $149).

You will also notice that the purchase already includes a $15 mail-in rebate. The customer will need to fill out and send the included form. This will effectively bring the price down to $124! Yes, it takes some steps and the process may be a bit annoying, but this is one of the best deals we have seen on this product.

QiKU to release its first ever smartphone

Android Smartphones_QiKu_new company_082515_1QiKU is new manufacturer looking to get in on the smartphone market. A new tweet from Evan Blass states the company is prepping its first ever Android smartphone.

You may have heard of Chinese antivirus maker Qihoo 360. This is the actually the same company as QiKU. The company plans to release an Android powered smartphone aimed at the Chinese market. Pictures of the anonymous smartphone indicate an all-metal design with a dual lens system, a fingerprint scanner and an Iris scanner for scanning your eyes. If the pictures are legitimate we are looking at a very slim profile. At this time we have no details on any specifications nor pricing and availability. Hopefully we’ll find out more on the new company’s plans for this smartphone in the coming weeks. It’s only a matter of time before something else leaks.Android Smartphones_QiKu_new company_082515_2

wileyfox_front_082515

WileyFox, a UK startup has just launched their first devices, the Storm and the Swift, both running on the latest Cyanogen OS. The two devices have solid specs at a competitive price, following the footsteps of the OnePlus smartphones.

WileyFox is trying to compete in the mobile market by using OnePlus’ main strategy; create smartphones with strong specs while pricing them at a reasonable price.

The Storm is the most expensive of the two, priced at £199 ($310). It features a 5.5-inch 1080p display,  a 20-megapixel main camera with a Sony sensor and an eight-megapixel front camera. The Storm runs on Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz Snapdragon 615 processor with integrated LTE, comes with 32GB of storage, 3GB RAM, and has an SD card slot to expand memory up to 128GB.

The Oppo R5s has reached the states

Android Smartphones_Oppo_R5s_Color OS_082515Starting today, you can buy the Oppo R5s in the United States for a discounted price of only $220 unlocked.

Last week, Oppo announced the R5s, which would be made available in a few countries. Today, the company has decided to bring the handset to the states. You can purchase the handset unlocked at a discounted price of only $220 until August 27. After that, the handset’s price will be slightly lifted.

The Oppo R5s is an upgrade from the original R5. This time around it will include more RAM and additional internal storage space. All the remaining specs will be kept the same as its predecessor including its super thin profile, camera and dimensions. In case you’re wondering, the handset will be receiving the all-new Color OS 2.1 update based on Android Lollipop in the near future. Unfortunately, the R5s won’t include US LTE bands. So please take note of that before you make your purchase. For more details, hit the source link down below.

AT&T HTC One M8 and M9 get Stagefright fix in new patch

HTC_One_M9_Front_BoomSound_Speaker_HTC_Logo_02_TA

AT&T has begun pushing out a new patch to the HTC One M8 and One M9, which aims to fix the Stagefright exploit.

The update comes in at 28MB to 55MB in size and fixes nothing but the Stagefright issue. There are no additional performance enhancements or bug fixes–it’s purely a security update.

As per the norm, the update could take a few weeks to get to everyone, as they release these types of things in stages in order to avoid infecting smartphones with wide spread bugs in the case of a programming accident.

Anyone gotten the update yet?

Internet tool fights censorship by making banned data look ‘normal’

Spaniards protest a censorship law

It’s getting harder to evade censorship in countries like China and Iran, which have increasingly taken to blocking VPNs, the Tor network and any other service that might let you see the unflattering truth. A clever new tool should help you leap over those hurdles, however. Marionette, developed by researchers at RedJack and Portland State University, masks your visits to banned sites and services by making your data transmissions seem innocuous. It doesn’t just disguise the traffic type — you can program it to mimic the variances you’d expect from a given form of traffic (say, a voice chat) and respond in a convincing way when the censors’ blocking software comes calling.

Marionette’s source code is available right now, but it may be a while before it’s in widespread use — if you’re a political dissident, you don’t want the software to break and let governments catch you in the act. Don’t be surprised if it flourishes, though. The hope is that it might find its way into Tor, giving the anonymity network’s users a ready-made way to escape online oppression. While there’s a good chance that authoritarian regimes will eventually find a way to stop Marionette, there’s no doubt that they’ll have their work cut out for them.
