Security hole found in Samsung smart fridges

samsung_smart_fridge_model_use

Some testing recently conducted by Pen Test Partners revealed a man-in-the-middle vulnerability in Samsung smart fridges that could be used to hack into a user’s Gmail account. The Samsung refrigerator that was tested has Wi-Fi capability that among other things, allows a user to display their Gmail calendar on the screen. The Pen Test Partners’ testing showed that although Samsung implemented a Secure Sockets Layer for connections, the fridge was not validating certificates leaving it vulnerable to attack.

In order to take advantage of the security, the attacker would have to be connected to the same network that the fridge is connected to, so a secure network and careful vetting of who you let “visit” on your network can help reduce exposure.

While accessing a Gmail account may not seem like an interesting target for hackers, many expect Internet connected devices to eventually include payment capabilities making them more enticing targets. Jonathan Vaux with Vix notes, “your fridge will have a payment capability. People are immediately associating [Samsung Pay] with the phone, but they’re the biggest provider of white goods and so I will have a fridge, I’m sure, that will have connected payments in it.”

Pen Test Partners has been testing a variety of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices and previously discovered Samsung was sending unencrypted voice recordings from their Smart TVs over the Internet.

The unofficial DROID MAXX 2 makes another appearance

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Motorola and Verizon have a fairly long history of doing business together with exclusive devices. Not to say other manufacturers don’t, but the last few years has seen a bit of a shift when it comes to specific device exclusives. The latest talks on the town have pointed to a follow DROID MAXX. Simply put, the DROID MAXX 2. Personally I am happy to see naming schemes that aren’t as ridiculous as they used to be. Anyone remember the Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch? Anyways, the DROID MAXX 2 is looking to be a carrier branded version of the Moto X Play.

Motorola DROID MAXX 2 under backplate

By all accounts the DROID MAXX 2 is sounding and looking like a re-branded Moto X Play. Verizon will inject the usual amount of apps and slap their name on the back plate. It will carry a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 1.65GHz Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM, 21MP camera and a 3630 mAh battery. It will launch with Android 5.1.1 on board out of the box.

Motorola DROID MAXX 2

CPU-Z screenshots seem to point to 8GB internal storage, but we are fairly certain that is a reporting issue on the app as the Moto X Play starts at 16GB. It would be pretty stupid of Verizon to custom order a mid-tier device and slump the storage with a 21MP camera. The 8.14 is still a bit off-putting and I can’t recall any device reporting slightly over what is actually included. If Verizon did do something to shrink the storage it should read under 8GBs in the Internal Storage field. Stranger things have happened though. The device is going under the guise of the ‘lux’ with model number xt1565.

Moto DROID MAXX 2

Now we just need Verizon and Motorola to officially announce the device and offer us up some pricing and availability.

HyperLink for Apple Watch Review: A Quality Stainless Steel Link Bracelet at Sport Band Pricing

While the stainless steel Link Bracelet is one of the nicest looking Apple Watch bands available, it is also the most expensive with a $449 price tag for the 38mm or 42mm version. For comparison, you could purchase an entire Apple Watch Sport for $100 less than the Link Bracelet.

But for those looking to give their Apple Watch more of a premium Rolex-like appearance without breaking the bank, look no further than the HyperLink Stainless Steel Link Bracelet from HYPER by Sanho Corporation, which launched today on crowdfunding website Kickstarter with a $50,000 funding goal.

Design

HyperLink is crafted from the same 316L stainless steel alloy used for the Apple Watch, providing the band with added strength and corrosion resistance. The metal is also water and sweat resistant, allowing you to carry out everyday tasks such as showering, washing your hands or jogging without worrying — although you’re probably still better off wearing a Sport Band for the latter.

HyperLink-Side-by-Side
The Swiss-inspired band has a unisex link bracelet design available in three models: 42mm Space Black, 38mm Silver and 42mm Silver. 38mm in Space Black is also listed as a possible stretch goal on Kickstarter, although no specific funding level is listed. The 42mm Silver model that I tested closely matched the look and feel of my stainless steel Apple Watch — well beyond my expectations for a non-Apple band.

The silver HyperLink that I tested has a lustrous appearance on the outside, while the inside is flatter in comparison. Meanwhile, the Space Black model has an additional diamond-like carbon (DLC) layer added for a sleek, durable and scratch resistant finish. The band, slightly thinner than a Sport Band, did not attract any noticeable scratches or scuffs after wearing it over the course of one week.

Fit

When I first tried on the HyperLink, I immediately noticed that it was well oversized for my wrist. But like most stainless steel bands, it is possible to remove individual links by inserting a very thin-pointed screwdriver or tool into the pinholes on the side to pop out the pressure-sensitive pins holding the bracelet together. Disappointingly, no such tool was included alongside the band.

HyperLink-2
Fortunately, I found an adjustable screwdriver laying around the house that was thin enough to pop out the pins holding together individual links. The process was rather simple and should be familiar to anyone that has ever owned a common stainless steel wristwatch before, but the lack of a tool included in the box is definitely something to consider when choosing between stainless steel bands.

HyperLink is precision CNC milled to fit the Apple Watch, and the results are favorable. Unlike some third-party bands, the adapters on HyperLink slide into the Apple Watch as effortlessly as official bands sold by Apple. The band also has a convenient quick clasp mechanism that enables you to quickly put on or take off your Apple Watch — much faster than the Classic Buckle or Sport Band in my testing.

HyperLink-Chasm
For the first few days, I wore the HyperLink rather tight against my wrist and noticed some pinching of my skin when closing the quick clasp mechanism, but otherwise the band was comfortable, lightweight and did not catch my hair. I have since added one link back to the band for a more loose and relaxed fit that gives the Apple Watch some flexibility on my wrist and makes it easier to take on and off.

Bottom Line

HyperLink is a premium yet affordable Apple Watch band that receives my recommendation, especially at its $49 early bird price; even at its $69 or $99 price points, it is a worthwhile option — with only a few drawbacks — to consider among third-party Apple Watch bands.

Hyper
HYPER by Sanho Corporation also has a reputable track record of successful crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, including CloudFTP, iStick, Pearl (Kickstarter), Pearl (Indiegogo), iPin for iPhone/Android, iPin for iPhone and HyperDrive for MacBook. The campaigns have altogether raised over $1.6 million.

Pros:

  • Affordable ($49-$99)
  • 316L stainless steel
  • Precision CNC milled to fit Apple Watch
  • Polished, scratch-resistant design
  • Lightweight and comfortable to wear
  • Water and sweat resistant
  • Quick clasp mechanism
  • Adjustable links

Cons:

  • No link adjustment tools included
  • GMobi logo on link bracelet is an eyesore

How to Buy

HyperLink is $49 on Kickstarter in any size or color for the first 1000 early bird pledgers, at which point the price rises to $69. The regular retail price will be $99 following the crowdfunding campaign.

HYPER is also offering bulk deals on the HyperLink through Kickstarter, including two bands for $98, three bands for $147, five bands for $245, ten bands for $490 and larger reseller packages.

HyperLink’s crowdfunding campaign runs from August 25 to September 30, with early bird and regular rewards expected to ship in October and November respectively. The band will be shipped to retailers in December and sold for $99.

Best Buy Accelerating Apple Watch Rollout to All 1,050 Stores Amid Strong Demand

Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly today announced that the company plans to accelerate support for the Apple Watch by having the wearable device be sold in every one of its 1,050 retail locations across the United States “by the end of September” (via Fortune).

The move follows Best Buy’s initial plan to deploy retail support for the Apple Watch in just 300 of its stores by the holiday season, but recent strong sales of the device have encouraged the retailer to back Apple in not just Apple Watch support, but with all of the Cupertino company’s products.

bestbuyapplewatch
Currently undergoing renovations at 740 locations in the United States are the Apple branded sections of Best Buy’s retail stores, “including new fixtures and more display tables for phones, computers, and tablets.” The company has already completed the update at 350 of its stores and has plans to get another 170 completed before the holiday shopping rush coming later this year.

We’ve also been working with Apple to update the 740 stores-within-a-store that were first implemented in 2007. The stores-within-a-store will have new Apple fixtures and are larger with more display tables for phones, computers, and tablets. We’ve already implemented approximately 350 of them, and expect to upgrade a total of approximately 520 by the holidays.

The additional display tables are great for the merchandising of Apple Watch, which went on sale at BestBuy.com and in more than 100 of our stores in August. Now, because demand for Apple Watch has been so strong in these stores and online, we are excited to share that beginning September 4 we will be carrying Apple Watch in more than 900 of our big-box stores. Apple Watch will be available in all 1050 of our big-box stores and approximately 30 of our Best Buy Mobile stores by the end of September.

Best Buy began selling the Apple Watch in-store and online in early August, along with a few third-party accessories for the wearable, like charging docks and various bands. The retailer will even begin selling AppleCare and AppleCare+ warranty plans in mid-September, no doubt hitting just in time for the launch of the next generation iPhones. Apple has avoided attaching specific sales figures to the Apple Watch, but Best Buy’s doubling down on the company’s wearable device is no doubt a sign of the Apple Watch’s success.

Alcatel (TCL)

Of course, we can’t forget Alcatel, a company you may actually be more familiar with now. Alcatel itself may not exactly be Chinese (the brand originally belonged to a French company), but its parent company is TCL, which does come from the Asian country. In essence, Alcatel OneTouch is a sub-brand. Many other companies from China are using this renaming technique in order to become more widely accepted in Western markets, and it seems to be working.

alcatel onetouch idol 3 review aa (24 of 27)

Alcatel OneTouch is getting more attention in the USA since the release of the Idol 3, a smartphone that offers a low price, strong performance and a solid build quality. The company is also signing noteworthy marketing deals with important soccer teams, such as the Toronto FC and the LA Galaxy FC.

One can say Alcatel is already ahead of most of the Chinese competition, as they have actually managed to sell their devices here. Now it’s just a matter of advertising and getting that image out there! Read our Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 review to see what these guys can do!

UMi

UMi may not get too much attention outside of China, and especially not in the USA, but they make some great devices with innovative features. The company recently announced the Umi Zero 2, a handset that sports an e-ink display in the back side (a la YotaPhone). This one caught our eye because of the battery-saving capabilities it can offer, but every one of Umi’s smartphones is special in some way.

umi-zero-2

The UMi eMax is only 7.9 mm thick, yet touts a whopping 3780 mAh battery. The UMi Iron uses eye recognition technology for security authentication. If those unique features aren’t cool enough, you can also opt for the Hammer S, which adopts USB-C technology and a fingerprint reader, aside from doubling as a smart remote controller!

There seem to be no plans for UMi coming to the west, but we sure hope they would consider it. These devices are quite fun and impressive.

Elephone

Let’s be real: Elephone doesn’t make the best devices, but they do offer great value. These phones are very affordable and happen to come with a good spec list, making them great options for those looking to get more for their money.

We have previously reviewed the Elephone P3000, P5000, P6000, P7000 and P8000. These all provide different types of advantages. The P8000 and P7000 have overall great specs. Meanwhile, the P5000 is most known for its massive 5350 mAh battery. But if what you want is something affordable, you can’t go wrong with the P3000 and P6000. I do have one complaint, though – these guys should really work on their smartphone monikers!

Elephone P8000-3

Coolpad

Coolpad won’t win any design or performance contests, but their accessible prices have turned them into one of the most influential brands in China, the company’s home country. At one point they were even selling more smartphones than Apple (in said country). Furthermore, Coolpad concluded 2014 with 9.4% in Chinese market share. Surely nothing to scoff at.

And if this brand sounds familiar, it’s because the company has started making its way here. You will find their super affordable tablets at Walmart and some prepaid carriers.

Coolpad 8060

Smartisan

Want to talk about emerging Chinese manufacturers? Smartisan is among the newest around, and that doesn’t really mean they can’t compete. The company announced their first smartphone in May, 2014, and it is quite the beauty.

This handset goes by the name of Smartisan T1. It packs a 4.95-inch 1080p display, a Snapdragon 801 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16/32 GB of internal storage, a 13 MP camera and a 2490 mAh battery.

These specs were definitely good when the phone was unveiled, but its internals are not the only things that caught our eye. This phone happens to be gorgeous! We sure hope Smartisan can survive in this competitive market; hopefully one day they will make it to the USA!

Vivo

Vivo is another new smartphone brand, founded in 2009 (not to be confused with BLU’s Vivo smartphone series). These guys have been doing amazing work the past few years. They were actually the first to put a QHD (2560x1440p) resolution display in a smartphone. More recently they launched the Vivo X5Pro, a smartphone that is thin, light, and greatly designed.

Their products are no joke, and the coolest part is that you can actually find some of them in the USA! The Vivo X5Pro can be purchased straight from Amazon, for example. It’s not exactly the cheapest phone around, but at least it’s around.

Vivo X5Pro Hands On-9

Zopo

Zopo is still a bit of an unknown brand to the general consumer, but they are way ahead of other Chinese brands in terms of global reach. Their products are offered by many European online retailers, and the company has opened experience stores in France, Hong Kong, Italy, Jordan, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Spain and other markets.

The company has a long list of smartphones and label them by three different categories. Their “Speed” smartphones are the higher-end ones. The “Flash” line-up focuses on camera quality and design. Ultimately, the “Color” series includes their affordable handsets, mostly meant for younger customers and casual users.

zopo-color

Mlais

Mlais is a smaller manufacturer, but they sure know how to make an affordable handset. Their phones come very well-specced for their prices. For example, the Mlais M7 Plus has an octa-core processor, 3 GB of RAM, a fingerprint reader, Android 5.1 Lollipop, a 13 MP camera, Quick Charge technology, 4G LTE, a 5.5-inch HD display and more.

If you are looking for more battery life, you can also opt for the Mlais MX, which is not quite as powerful, but does feature a whopping 4300 mAh battery. The best part? They have plenty of partners that will ship to the USA.

ad_Mlais M7 Plus

No.1

China is very well-known for its clones, and my personal favorite brand for these smartphone copycats is No.1. I happen to like them because, though they make clones of other mainstream devices, they don’t exactly try to be other phone makers. The company is very proud of its brand and every single one of its products wears the moniker proudly. These guys are not trying to fool you into buying a “fake” smartphone, they simply take the design from others and replicate it.

By the way, these phones are amazingly cheap, but they don’t skimp out on design and build quality (they do on specs). For example, their No.1 S6i is a Galaxy S6 clone, and it happens to look and feel just as good as the original! It will also help that the S6i is only about $120 USD! There’s also some great smart watches and rugged phones in their official website, just in case you are interested to see more of their work.

But really guys, I do believe this brand is No.1 when it comes to smartphone clones, and the best part is they are not trying to fool you by putting other manufacturer monikers in their devices. You know what you are getting right off the bat.

Wrapping up

So there you have it, guys! Here is another set of great Chinese manufacturers you should definitely keep an eye on. We know there are plenty of others, but we really wanted to focus on the main ones for now. Maybe we can do a post featuring the more obscure ones later, but we just wanted to make sure to create more consciousness about these great manufacturers.

Deal: 2-in-1 Android & iOS 6-ft charging cable only $19.99

2-in-1-cable-1

Here at Android Authority we love Google’s operating system more than any other mobile OS, but having iOS does have its advantages. We know many of you use both iOS and Android devices, making for a mixture that might be the perfect fit for your own needs. The only issue is these platforms use different charging solutions: iOS has its own Lightning port, while Android has adopted the standard microUSB connector.

The AA Deals Store currently has a deal on a 2-in-1 charging cable that works as both a microUSB and Lightning charger! It also happens to be 6-feet long, so you won’t have to worry about staying uncomfortably close to the outlet.

WhatsApp updated with custom notifications, new emojis and more

WhatsAppLogo

Following a number of new features creeping into the beta build, a shiny new version of WhatsApp has finally landed at the Play Store, bringing with it new customizable notifications, contact mute controls, new emojis and the introduction of skin tone colors, among other things.

The new version is listed as 2.12.250 and most users will probably want to go and check out the variety of new custom chat options first. This menu allows users to customize specific conversation notifications with their own colors and tones. There are also now options to adjust how new messages pop-up depending on your screen’s on/off status and the ability to mute a conversation for a specific period of time.

Another helpful feature is the ability to mark conversations as read and unread, which might come in handy if you want to respond to something at a later date. There’s also a switch to lower the quality of voice calls to save on your data plan, which is bound to come in handy near the end of the month.

New WhatsApp features Aug 25 2015

If you’re an avid emoji sender, you will also find the new skin colors options attached to a number of emojis. There are a few new ones too, including a lovely middle finger and Vulcan salute gesture for the Trekkies.

You can check the Play Store to see if there’s an update ready for you to download. Alternatively, you can grab the latest version of WhatsApp from APK Mirror.

EU Note 5 reportedly hits the FCC, but you shouldn’t get your hopes too high

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Unboxing-14

While the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ is a decent looking handset with plenty of power under the hood, for many folks the Note 5 is still the better choice. With a standard yet attractive design and the S-Pen for taking your productivity to new heights, there’s a lot to like about the Note 5. Unfortunately, as we all know by now, those in Europe won’t have the option to pick between the Edge+ and the Note 5, as only the former is available right now.

samsung galaxy note 5 color comparison (19 of 22)Read also: Samsung won’t offer the Note 5 in Europe, but should it? (Poll)376301

What we all really want to know is if the Galaxy Note 5 will ever arrive to Europe. Samsung’s previous language suggests a 2015 arrival is unlikely, but has yet to rule out the possibility of the Note 5 arriving eventually. Some believe that Samsung will use IFA as a launching crowd for the European Note 5 and that it could end up varying, at least slightly, from the version debuting in the US, South Korea, and other markets.

While there is no concrete proof that the Note 5 is coming to Europe, it seems that a Note 5 variant with the model SM-N920F has now surfaced in the USA’s FCC database. What does that have to do with Europe? Possibly nothing, but it is worth mentioning that the “F” suffix has previously been used for European models of the Galaxy S5, S6, S6 Edge, Note 4, Note Edge and countless others. Before you get too excited, there’s no guarantees that Samsung isn’t using the F designation for another variant or region this time around, especially since they haven’t been too shy about breaking tradition recently (ditching plastic, ditching microSD, ditching the Note 5 in Europe, etc).

Then again, the Note 5 appears to be doing pretty well in sales so far, and the backlash over Samsung’s decision to end the Note series in Europe has been pretty high. Perhaps it is true that Samsung had a change of heart? What do you think of Samsung’s decision to announce only the Galaxy S6 Edge+ in Europe? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

This might be HTC’s late-2015 flagship phone

HTC's A9, aka Aero

HTC has been promising another “hero” phone this October to try and turn around its dismal fiscal performance, but what that device would look like has remained a mystery. Would it just be a tweaked One M9? If a claimed photo leak is accurate, it might be considerably more than that. The two images purport to show the A9 (aka Aero), a handset that has very little in common with the M9. Its camera is above the antenna stripe (reminiscent of the M8’s depth camera) rather than below, and it appears to be flatter. The front, meanwhile, looks like it’s switching to “2.5D” curved glass. Those aren’t far-fetched changes, but we can’t blame you if you’re still skeptical — these pics are tough to verify, so it’s possible that they’re just fanciful renderings.

And what’s inside? That’s even less certain, although there are rumors that the A9 will use a 10-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 5.2-inch quad HD display and a hefty 3,500mAh battery. If so, this would be a different beast than the M9, focusing more on longevity (the main reason the X20 has all those cores) over raw performance. With that said, we’re not convinced yet. The X20 isn’t supposed to be ready until early 2016, so you may see a more familiar chip inside HTC’s stopgap smartphone.

eSports gets its first major UK bookmaker

Betway eSports

Ignore it all you like, but eSports is booming. There are now million-dollar payouts, doping scandals and even official ways to put money down on your favourite squad. While gambling on eSports is still a relatively new concept, it’s just been given a much-needed boost after well-known UK betting site Betway launched its very own gaming portal. The company, which has traditionally focused on football, horse racing, tennis and other “traditional” sports, believes it’s the first major bookmaker to expand into competitive gaming.

A quick look at the Betway site shows bets for all the major games you’d expect: League of Legends, Dota 2, CS:Go, Starcraft 2, Hearthstone, FIFA and World of Tanks are all present, as well as individual matches from tournaments hosted by ESL and other event organisers. There are also some fun special bets, which include 99/1 odds on Hearthstone becoming part of the Winter Olympics in 2030, giving plenty of time to think about what you’d do with your (unlikely) winnings.
