Facebook introduces Donate Now button on pages and links for nonprofit organizations
Facebook has brought a new button to their mobile app and website that will make it significantly easier to donate to your favorite nonprofit organizations. Previously, the company had donate buttons for certain organizations that would allow you to quickly make a one-time donation with whatever credit card you had on file with Facebook. This button expands that, but makes things a little less intuitive.
The new buttons, clearly labeled “Donate Now,” make it much, much easier for someone to donate to whatever nonprofit organization of their choice, allow all the new buttons really do is link to the organization’s external website. There’s no more clean Facebook integration, so it’s more of a shortcut than anything. Still, it’s probably a good thing for these organizations that they’re getting the extra visibility.
You should start seeing the button on pages soon.

Sony Xperia promises new phone with greater focus
Sony Xperia GB has tweeted that they will be bringing out a new phone with “greater focus” on September 2nd, 2015.
Get ready for a smartphone with greater focus. All will become clear on 02.09.2015. pic.twitter.com/Mm7HjWKojA
— Sony Xperia GB (@sonyxperiagb) August 24, 2015
We can’t be exactly sure which new phone it will be, but we have heard a lot of rumors about the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact. The date of the announcement is also lined up very closely to the IFA trade show in Berlin.
Also, what “greater focus” actually means is unknown as well. Our best guess is some sort of new autofocus system for the camera.
Great smartphone cameras have been all the rage this year. It will be hard to beat the LG G4 or Samsung Galaxy S6’s cameras, but we will have to wait and see if the Xperia Z5 can do it.

ASUS and Samsung make the fastest-charging smartphones
Your smartphone’s battery life is no doubt very important to you, but its charging time matters, too — just ask anyone who’s had mere minutes to top up a phone before heading out. So who offers the best recharge rates, then? Tom’s Guide might have an answer. It recently conducted a charging speed test to determine which phones will deliver the most energy when you’re in a rush. In short, you’ll probably want to make a beeline toward either ASUS’ Zenfone 2 or Samsung’s Galaxy S6. The Zenfone 2 is the fastest in short bursts, giving you 32 percent power in just 15 minutes. The Galaxy S6 is faster overall, however, hitting 100 percent after 1 hour and 22 minutes.
Of course, the performance depends on not just a phone’s technology, but the size of the battery. Samsung wins partly because it has a relatively small 2,550mAh pack compared to the 3,000mAh-plus batteries of other phones with speedy refills, such as the Zenfone, G4, Droid Turbo and Nexus 6. While you may be the first to unplug your phone if you have an S6, you may also be the first to plug in again.
One thing’s for certain: if you don’t have quick charging at all, you’ll notice the difference. Both Apple’s iPhone 6 and the OnePlus 2 were well behind the front-runners, taking up to 73 minutes longer to hit peak capacity. That might not be a deal-breaker if you only ever go hunting for a wall outlet at the end of the night, but it’s something to consider if you frequently find yourself running low on juice in mid-day.

Uber tests picking up passengers along specific routes
Uber has a new feature that could save customers some precious, precious dollars. TechCrunch has discovered that the company is testing out what it calls “Smart Routes” for UberPool, wherein cars pick up passengers along a specific corridor instead of going to their homes. If you look at the map below the fold, you’ll see a green line going through a road — a customer who chooses the option will have to hoof it from their homes to a pick-up point along that route. Think of those points as bus stops of sorts. In exchange, Uber will give them a discount worth at least a dollar. The company’s been testing a similar feature called “Suggested Pickup Points” for a while now, but that one still has cars meet customers close to their homes.
Uber told TechCrunch that “Smart Routes” is currently being tested in two locations in San Francisco, if you want to give it a shot. One route goes through Mission district on Valencia St. between 15th and 26th, while the other goes through Fillmore St. from Haight St. to Bay St. in the Marina.

The Big Picture: Saturn illuminates the surface of its icy moon
Saturn’s moon Enceladus is covered in ice. We already knew that. But what you see above is evidence of just how icy it actually is. The right side of the celestial body isn’t illuminated by the sun. Nope, that’s actually brightened by the light reflecting off of the adjacent ringed planet according to NASA. If you’re looking for something a bit more solar in nature, take a peek at the bright wedge on the moon’s left side. The aerospace outfit says that these types of pictures from Cassini are “designed to capture the extended plume of icy material” coming off the moon’s south pole.

Watch Sony’s prototype drone do a vertical takeoff

Here’s your first look at the drone Sony’s developing with a Tokyo robotics firm under its collab company called Aerosense. The UAV can carry up to 22 pounds, fly continuously for two hours at a speed of 106 miles per hour and, as you can see in the video below the fold, take off and land vertically like a helicopter. Sony mentioned before that business customers will be able to use it for “measuring, surveying, observing and inspecting” as soon as next year, so it will likely carry different types of instruments, depending on the task at hand.

Oukitel U6 has a secondary E-Ink display and a battery life of up to 120 hours

No, that is no typo on the title. The Oukitel U6 has an estimated battery life of up to 120 hours, granted that you are using only that secondary E-Ink display. Oukitel takes a hint from other manufacturers like Yota Devices and UMi, who have already implemented dual-screen applications. But this doesn’t mean Oukitel can no longer be unique; in fact, their device is pretty awesome, and it should be more accessible (where available).
The first thing you will notice is that Oukitel’s handset is quite gorgeous. It does resemble a couple other phones already in the market, at least when you look at the minimalist bezels and metal frame. But though it manages to look very good, those looking for a powerhouse may have to look elsewhere. This phone packs a Mediatek MT6735M processor, which does beat the Snadpragon 410, but only by a bit. In addition, the phone has 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage, which can be extended by up to 64 GB via microSD.

That is all just a bunch of numbers and weird wording to those of you who will be interested in a device like this one, though. The point is the phone will run relatively well, and you likely won’t encounter too many hiccups. What really makes this phone special is display dynamic duo. You can find a 5-inch 720p LCD screen on the front, which grants you all the vibrant colors and light you will need to enjoy videos, images and the like.
Want to save some battery? Use the screen in the back, instead! This E-Ink rear panel measures in at 4.7 inches and offers a 960x540p screen. That would equate to a 235 PPI (pixels per inch) pixel density, which isn’t great, but it will certainly do the trick for your casual reading and other simple activities. Also, that relatively low resolution will look much better once you realize it can make your phone last up to 120 hours! And standby time can extend up to 180 hours, all with the help of a simple 2100 mAh battery.

As you may know, having an E-Ink display has its privileges. These panels spend very low amounts of battery, and only do so when changing the content in the screen. This is why other phones can leave an image on the ePaper side even after the device’s battery has died. Another benefit is the improved visibility in direct sunlight, not to mention that fact that it’s much more comfortable to read for prolonged periods of time.

There’s more features on board, such as an IR blaster, fun gestures and more. Not all details have been provided just yet, so this is about all we can tell you about the Oukitel U6 so far. More information on price and availability should emerge in due time. For now all we can say is that this phone should be reasonably affordable. We sure hope it comes to the USA, but as it goes with most Chinese smartphones… this is highly unlikely.
Would you buy the Oukitel U6 is it came with the right price? I would love to have it for my longer trips. And with those specs, I likely wouldn’t mind forking out the cash to have it as a secondary phone.

GoGo gets the green light for its next-gen in-flight internet
In-flight internet comes with a kind of technological ambivalence — the fact that it exists at all feels like a complete miracle, but at the same time it almost always totally sucks. Don’t worry though, it’s about to get better: GoGo, one of the largest providers of commercial in-flight internet, just got approval from the FAA to launch its next generation of mile-high internet. If testing goes well, you could be pulling down 70 Mbps on select flights later this year.
The big difference is how the new and old GoGo systems get the internet to the plane. Fly today, and your plane will be receiving internet from terrestrial radio towers — transmitters a lot like the cell phone towers you already use, but with their antennas pointed towards the sky. The new 2Ku satellite system beams information down from Ku-band satellites orbiting 22,000 miles above the Earth. It’s basically the exact same tech behind GoGo’s ground-to-orbit experiments, but with an extra antenna to dedicated exclusively to sending data back to the satellite.
GoGo says that seven commercial airlines have already signed up for the new technology’s deployment, and hopes to start upgrading most of its partner airlines in early 2016. In the meantime, it’ll be putting the final touches on the technology behind closed doors.

Using your old gear with ‘Rock Band 4’ on Xbox One will cost you
Rock Band is rising from the dead this fall, and as such we’re starting to get finer details about different prices and packages for the forthcoming game. Unfortunately for Xbox One owners, the “disc-only” version of Rock Band 4 will cost $79.99, $20 more than the PlayStation 4 version. Harmonix confirmed that’s because the Xbox version will come bundled with a legacy adapter that’ll let buyers use their old instruments with the new game and hardware. PS4 owners won’t need that — the existing USB adapter that PlayStation owners have always used with Rock Band will continue to work just fine. If you’re new to the series and buying one of the bundles that includes instruments as well as the game, though, the pricing will be identical: $249.99 will get you a mic, guitar, drum set, and the game regardless of which platform you’re playing on. If you just want the game and a guitar, you’ll be shelling out $129.99. Mad Catz also plans to sell the adapter standalone for people who purchase the game digitally. Rock Band 4 is set to launch on October 6th.Filed under:
