Sony Xperia Z5 Compact photo leaks

There’s growing anticipation that Sony is preparing to launch a new range of smartphones at IFA next month and a new leaked promotional photo (above) of what appears to be the Xperia Z5 Compact has added further fuel to the fire.
The design is reminiscent of the usual Xperia style, especially when it comes to camera lens, LED flash and logo placement. However, we can spot an adjustment to the power button and volume rocker, which appears to have been moved down to the lower right hand side of the smartphone. A separate leak of an Xperia Z5 case drawing seems to confirm this design, along with a E6XXX model number.

The Xperia Z3 Compact is rumored to come with a fingerprint scanner built into the power button on the side of the handset, which may be an ergonomic solution to include a scanner while keeping a compact form factor. We recently saw a similar side-mounted fingerprint scanner design appear with the Huawei Honor 7i.

Other rumored specifications include a 4.7-inch 1080p display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processing package, 3GB of RAM and a new 20.7 megapixel rear camera sensor, most likely Sony’s latest ExmorRS model, along with an 8 megapixel front facing camera.
IFA 2015 begins in the first week of September in Berlin and we will be there to see what Sony has to unveil.
Samsung reportedly planning an 18.4-inch Android tablet

When it comes to Android tablets, 7, 8, and 10-inch are still probably the most common sizes, though there are a number of notable exceptions, including 5 and 6-inch mini ‘tabs’, and giants like the Fuhu 20 and 24-inch series. For Samsung, the product line-up tends to range between 7 and 12-inches, but according to a new report from SamMobile, Samsung is prepping a new massive Android tablet of its own.
The SM-T670, codenamed “Tahoe”, is a large tablet with an 18.4-inch TFT LCD display and a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The tablet is reportedly being designed for use in offices, schools, or as a family “living room” type device. If the report is correct, the Tahoe is powered by an Exynos 7580 with 2GB RAM, and 32GB storage with microSD for expansion. Other specs include a 2.1MP front cam, 8MP rear cam, and a 5700 mAh battery. Dimensions are said to be 451.8 mm wide, 275.8 mm tall, and 11.9 mm thick.
For what it is worth, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the SM-T670. Back in August import records leaked suggesting that Samsung was working on an 18.4-inch tablet, and so this latest report lends a little more credence to the idea. Of course, it is important to note that we can’t confirm SamMobile’s source and so we’d still take this rumor with a hefty grain of salt until more substantial evidence rears its head.
If Samsung really is planning a giant tablet, would anyone be interested in such a device? What potential use cases do you envision for such a monster?
Promo image of alleged Sony Xperia Z5 Compact leaks ahead of IFA 2015
There isn’t long to go until the 2015 edition of the IFA opens its doors in Berlin, where we’ll most likely see Sony announce its new Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 compact handsets in a press conference on September 2nd. Until then, we can expect the flow of leaks to increase both in quantity and quality, and today we have a leaked promotional image of what is believed to be the Xperia Z5 Compact.
It isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Xperia Z5 Compact on show, having been previously leaked both here and here. A new button layout is believed to be on the cards, with the promo image showing the buttons to be situated rather lower on the device than one would normally expect. The round on-off button that has been present on so many Sony devices in recent years is also believed to have been replaced with a fingerprint scanner.
The Z5 Compact would still appear to be sporting Sony’s almost customary OmniBalance design, and it’s thought to have a Snapdragon 810 SoC providing the grunt along with 3GB of RAM on tap for multitasking. It’s also expected to carry a new camera sensor, possibly the same 20.7MP sensor that its larger sibling, the Z5, will feature. The display resolution might be as low as 1280 x 720, although that would be a lot of horsepower for such a low-res screen.
What would you like Sony to unveil at its press conference? Personally, I’m really hoping the rumoured Xperia Z5+ is announced, but that’s just me.

The adorable ‘Kerbal Space Program’ will land on Xbox One
Kerbal Space Program‘s cute little green engineers are coming to Xbox One. Much like the PlayStation 4 version that was announced in June, there isn’t a release date listed for the spaceship-building sim on Xbox. But considering the latter has an Early Access-like program of its own we could theoretically see it on Microsoft’s latest console before it hits the PS4. Maybe. The port’s being handled by mobile-focused developer Flying Tiger, which original developer Squad says will allow them to keep a keen focus on the game’s PC version. As Squad tells it, Flying Tiger has helped immensely in the process of upgrading the game to run on the Unity 5 engine and has “deeply simplified Kerbal‘s upgrade process. Flying Tiger’s resume isn’t what you’d call impressive, but hey neither was Rocksteady’s prior to Batman: Arkham Asylum — we all know how that turned out.

Sky Sports will show 100 extra La Liga matches this season

To make up for its lack of Champions League and Europa League football, Sky is doubling down on La Liga. The broadcaster will be showing over 300 matches from the Spanish division this season — up from its usual tally of roughly 200. British interest in the league has always been high, given the quality of teams such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. With the extra games, however, Sky Sports customers will get to see more of football superstars Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez and Bale on their TVs. Are the fixtures enough to counterbalance the loss of the Champions League? No, but it’s better than nothing. BT Sport is steadily growing its stockpile of live TV rights, so it’s in Sky’s interest to do the same. The company still has the lion’s share of Premier League rights, but expanding its La Liga offering could stop a few unhappy subscribers from jumping ship.

O2’s ‘intelligent’ network adjusts masts to boost your signal
Mobile network infrastructure isn’t exactly an enthralling dinner-table topic, and yet somehow, O2’s actually managed to make it sound interesting. The carrier’s announced that it’s switched on its new “self-optimising intelligent network,” which responds to customers’ needs in real-time. Apparently it’s the first of its kind in the UK, but what makes it so smart exactly? Well, according to O2, the network constantly monitors mobile usage in any given area. When it notices demand catching up with supply, causing a decline in network quality, O2’s mobile antennas are remotely repositioned to boost signal and bandwidth in response. Or, as the company puts it, the network “determines the best possible coverage and capacity parameters for all customers in a defined area.”
O2 claims its remote-controlled antennas can optimise service “in a matter of minutes,” but the new network isn’t just about short-term gains. It’s currently able to monitor the performance of call, text and data traffic (all anonymous, of course) from two million O2 customers each day. The plan is that by November, it’ll be able to analyse performance data for all 24 million customers, so in the long term, network quality can be improved where it’s needed most. This’ll all happen behind the scenes of course, but if you find your phone hopping onto ropey Costa hotspots a little less often, it might well be thanks to this new “intelligent network.”

Samsung plans to drag Apple to the Supreme Court, as the patent war continues

The long running patent battle between Apple and Samsung looks to be escalating one step further, as the Korean technology giant has applied to have its latest appeal heard at the US Supreme Court, following a rejection at the US Federal Circuit Court of Appeals earlier this year.
Samsung is looking to have the amount of damages that it has to pay out to Apple further reduced, or preferably completely thrown out. Originally, Samsung had been ordered to pay Apple $1.05 billion in damages after being found to have infringed on a number of Apple’s smartphone patents. This amount has already been reduced by a few hundred million, after Judge Lucy Koh agreed with Samsung that the jury had made some calculation errors.
Samsung has seen some further overall reductions in the total amount that it has to pay to Apple, after both sides have won numerous smaller cases and appeals. Samsung has around $548 million still left to pay from the first trial. The Korean tech company recently asked the US Federal Circuit Court of Appeals to bring in additional judges to relook at the case, but this was denied, leaving the Supreme Court is Samsung’s only remaining option

Following the most recent decision, a large number of technology companies came out in support of a rehearing for Samsung. While these squabbles may seem petty from the outside, the nature of Apple’s patents and the case could have far reaching implications for other innovative technology companies in the US and around the world. Silicon Valley giants, such as Facebook and Google, are likely to urge the court to re-examine the case, as they are worried about the suit setting precedents.
Samsung filed papers to have its case heard on Wednesday, but the court will have until the end of next June to decide if it wants to become involved in the dispute. Until then, Apple will just have to wait to see if it is entitled to any further monies.
New Samsung tablet with 18.4-inch display apparently on the way
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
We thought personal tablets couldn’t get any bigger when Samsung released the 12.2-inch Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 a few years ago, but it appears the Korean manufacturer is on track to out-do itself in the near future. According to SamMobile, a Samsung tablet with 18.4-inch display is in the pipeline and will be aimed towards living room, office and school use. Despite its huge footprint, the device is rumoured to have a 1920×1080 resolution display, an Exynos 7580 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, microSD slot and 5,700mAh. It will even feature front and rear cameras, which we imagine will be like taking photos with a computer monitor.
Codenamed “Tahoe“, presumably due to its comparable size, the tablet will also run Android Lollipop. We can only imagine how much a tablet of this size will cost, but for the time being, there’s no information on the pricing, expected release date or even a possible name. Looks like we’ll have to wait this one out.

Comcast releases its livestreaming app to all subscribers
Comcast says its livestreaming app did very well during its limited release, so the company’s now making it available to all Xfinity customers. The app, called Xfinity Share, gives you a way to broadcast video streams, photos and even previously recorded videos not just on your own TVs, but on other subscribers’ TVs. It also lets you share from mobile to mobile, though, if that’s more convenient. Xfinity Share used to be exclusive to Triple Play package customers, but now it can be accessed by every voice, video, home and internet subscriber. However, the recipient still needs to have an X1 DVR-ready set-top box to see what you’re trying to send them on a bigger screen.
Say, you want to livestream your kids’ next game to their grandparents’ TV: just grab the app from iTunes or Google Play, then follow these instructions:
To stream to the TV, users just need to follow these simple steps: open the Xfinity Share app, select “Stream Live,” select “Stream to other contacts,” enter the home phone number or comcast.net email address for the person you want to see the video, and click “Stream.” A notification will pop up on that person’s TV, and all that person needs to do to watch the live streaming is click the “Info” button on the X1 TV remote.
